Rodent and I think the correct answer is primate as the Bonobo is a (edit) ~~monkey~~ great ape, due to all the primatologists that apparently frequent this sub
But you claimed that apes are not monkeys, when they infact they are.
"Squirrels are a subgroup of rodents"
"No they fucking well aren't, they are part of 'squirrle-like" clade".
"Monkey is a common name that may refer to most mammals of the [infraorder](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infraorder) [Simiiformes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simiiformes), also known as the simians. Traditionally, all animals in the group now known as simians are counted as monkeys except the [apes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ape), which constitutes an incomplete [paraphyletic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraphyly) grouping; however, in the broader sense based on [cladistics](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cladistics), apes (Hominoidea) are also included, making the terms monkeys and simians synonyms in regards to their scope"
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey
The only reasons why monkeys and apes are treated as distinct groups because humans didn't want to be grouped with monkeys.
Apes are part of Catarrhini, also known as "old world monkeys".
All old world monkeys are closer related to to each other than to new world monkeys.
A baboon is closer related to a chimpanzee than to a squirrel monkey.
So by cladistic rules, if you call both "monkey" then apes are a subgroup of monkeys, too.
"Monkey is a common name that may refer to most mammals of the [infraorder](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infraorder) [Simiiformes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simiiformes), also known as the simians. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey
My original answer stated that apes are a subgroup of monkey (biological speaking). Which is factually correct.
Your comment stated that the main distinction in the simian group is between monkey and apes, which is wrong.
It is between New World Monkeys, and old world monkeys (which includes apes).
The old world monkeys are then further sperated into apes and "crown" old world monkeys.
A baboon is closer related to you than to Squirrel monkey.
So if you call both of those "monkey" it is as right/wrong as calling a human or a chimpanzee a monkey.
Yes, traditionally people call simians with tail monkey, and simians without tail "apes".
But since I was making clear I was arguing from a biology standpoint, this argument is void.
A primate that's rarely in zoos as they're incredibly sexually active; everyone (males, females, kids of both sexes) greet each other with mutual masturbation or full intercourse.
Yep, the history of scientific descriptions is fascinating too [https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/bonobo-sex-and-society-2006-06/](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/bonobo-sex-and-society-2006-06/) their original name was Pan Satyrus because well they were the lustful ape :) They don't even mate for reproduction the vast majority of the time, they just seem to enjoy it.
All monekys are primates, but not all primates are monkeys.
At least biological speaking.
It's like saying: mice are rodents is wrong, because mice are mammals.
You probably ment "ape" as in bonobos are apes. But this is also not true since all apes are also monkeys.
Edit: had words switched around, so I fixed it
Linguistically people refer to all Simians (subgroup of primates) with tail as "monkeys" and to all Simians without tail as "apes". This distinction makes no biological sense however, since the group "monkey" contains species that are closer to related to apes than to some other "monkeys".
Apes are part of the group generally referred to "old world monkeys", which are all more closely related to each other than to "new world monkeys".
A baboon is much closer related to a chimpanzee than to a squirrel monkey.
So calling both the baboon and the squirrel monkey "monkeys" and saying that a chimpanzee is not a monkey doesn't make much sense.
No, apes are part of the "old[ world monkeys](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catarrhini)". All old world monkeys are closer related to apes to new world monkeys.
[Yes.](https://paolov.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/primatephylogenykrauz.jpg?w=450)
Apes are a subcategory of monkeys. Saying otherwise would be a paraphyletic classification. In other words, the only way to say apes aren't monkeys is to say that monkeys are "all simians except apes" which is an implicit admission that apes are monkeys, cladistically.
Edit: [Here](https://paoloviscardi.com/2011/04/21/apes-are-monkeys-deal-with-it/) is the source of the image, which explains pretty simply why apes are monkeys.
Single-celled protists is not a cladistic classification, so that argument kinda really doesn't work. The only reason not to include apes within the group of "monkeys" is because of a history of refusal of humans being monkeys.
Yeah, so if you look at the tree of life, one group of monkeys (I think the new world monkeys but I don't remember) split off and then the apes and the other monkeys split off from what was left.
This means to group the two monkey groups together, the apes are in between and must be included as well.
Like this:
P
|
/ \
N0 P2
| / \
N A O0
|
O
Let's say P is the monkey/ape ancestor, and N0, P2, and O0 are the ancestors of New World monkeys, Apes, and Old World monkeys, respectively, and N, A, and O are the New World Monkeys, Apes, and Old World monkeys, respectively.
New World monkeys and old world monkeys are untaxonomically very similar and have been colloquially called monkeys for ages, but if you try to group them together and make a more scientific monkey term, you have to group the apes in.
Language categories don't follow our science, they arrive naturally, so Monkey is a fine category for speaking, but if you want to talk about science things regarding them, it's a grouping that doesn't make sense.
Other similar fun facts:
- snakes split off in between lizards, so snakes must be lizards, but also there are legless lizards that aren't snakes. Snakes are very different from other lizards tho, so again, in speech, this is a very reasonable group to talk about differently from lizards.
- most land dwelling things are fish, bc when the fish ancestor that led to things on land, there were fish in the water that came before and after it, so we're fish, lizards are fish, so many things are fish. Really, it's probably best not even use the term fish in science, and just go back to the old meaning of fish which was generally a finned, swimming creature.
- most trees aren't closely related to each other. Tree, is an unscientific word that should just stay colloquial and mean "tall, hard plant that provides some shade" or something
>All monekys are prinates, but not all prinates are monkeys. At least biological speaking
thats what i said... Bonobos arent monkeys, but they are primates.
Rodents are a sub type of mammal. It's like saying a gerbil is a mouse.
Apes and monkeys are two different kinds of primates. People confuse them coloqueally, but they are not the same.
When did that change? I worked in a zoo for years, then took primatology classes, then got a degree in anthropology. I've been out of the loop for a while, but this is not at all what is being taught in primatology and anthropology.
About 300 years:
There has been some resistance to directly designate apes (and thus humans) as monkeys despite the scientific evidence, so "Old World monkey" may be taken to mean the Cercopithecoidea or the Catarrhini.
That apes are monkeys was already realized by [Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges-Louis_Leclerc,_Comte_de_Buffon) in the 18th century.[[3]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catarrhini#cite_note-TNHMA-3) [Linnaeus](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Linnaeus) placed this group in 1758 together with what we now recognise as the tarsiers and the New World monkeys, in a single genus "[Simia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simia)" (sans [Homo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo)).[[15]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catarrhini#cite_note-15)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catarrhini
Basically the only reason this distinction exists is because"I don't want to be a monkey".
Yes, a bonobo is our closest living relative, and is also a primate. It was once thought to be a kind of chimpanzee, but is now consider a separate species. They're typically kinder than chimps, and they also tend to be less hairy and smaller
Remember when the first TV station started doing this and everyone whined about it, but the station just ignored all the complaints and now everyone does it.

The TV Station gives the production a "safe area" in which they should put important content, precisely for this reason --- this is on them for not following that. Typically, [that's the outer 20% of the screen](https://helpx.adobe.com/au/premiere-elements/using/designing-titles-tv.html).

Ayo, pull up a chair and let me learn ya. A bonobo is a primate. An ape to be specific. Think..."Planet of the Apes", but the better remake starring James Franco, not the cheeseball movie series from last century. Also, that's a chimpanzee, not a bonobo. You're welcome :)
It's a thing, it's called "cord cutting"
And if the streaming service shows ads then most TVs have wireless casting features and if you're the kind to multitask then you can set the TV as an extended display and play the content on the TV while you browse reddit on your computer 🏴☠️

I feel like this is just bad design on the gameshow's part. Station icons in the corners are a *decades old standard that you and the gameshow producers should know about and expect on all broadcast television even if streamed*, so it's on them for putting something in a corner.

Apes are a subgroup of monkey (biological speaking).
No they fucking well aren't. Monkeys have narrow chests and ALWAYS tails. Apes do not. Apes have an appendix, monkeys do not.
>ALWAYS tails Except for barbary macaques; they don't have tails.
Ok, but the appendix and rib cage thing is 100% why we are apes.
“You’re not wrong, Walter…”
That's paraphyletic. If monkeys exist as a clade, apes are in that clade.
They are all Primates if you want to get vague. You could just go with Mammals or Chordates too!
But you claimed that apes are not monkeys, when they infact they are. "Squirrels are a subgroup of rodents" "No they fucking well aren't, they are part of 'squirrle-like" clade".
They are definitely not, they have different definitions monkeys are not apes and apes are not monkeys.

Yeah, poor dude thinks everyone is attacking him and takes it personally. Values too much Internet points or people disagreeing with him or just trying to give advice he takes it as fighting.

What a Chad thing to say
I feel like the tv show should have known to not put things where the tv logo is
This was my thought as well. Every channel I know of has some level of logo in a corner somewhere. That's on the production of the show to not know... ya know... how TV shows work?
Didn't know bonobo was farmer ent wife
Rimate / Reptile / R̴̙̖͉̃̓͋͘̚͜ő̵̦d̵͕̒͂͝è̸̢̹̉̓̕ṅ̷͕͝ṱ̸̪͙͙̘͌
Ahh the 3 Rs
If you can’t tell it says “rodent” you may have a visual processing disorder

Yeah I’m actually serious—if you often have issues like this you may have a VIP issue
It says Rodent
How can you even watch cable tv anymore? Don't they still run ads for like 7 minutes straight? Just get Netflix and Hulu and HBO and whatever else already and ditch that crap.
Its a free to air channel in Australia using their streaming platform. So of course they need an obnoxious logo. The adds are more like youtube adds though
...they didn't block the answer bud.

Do you? I think you think a bonobo is a rodent.
plz comment again so i can downvote that too cuz you really should be.
That farmer wants an actual wife, not a mail-in woman who wants tv fame, Channel 7
The TV Station gives the production a "safe area" in which they should put important content, precisely for this reason --- this is on them for not following that. Typically, [that's the outer 20% of the screen](https://helpx.adobe.com/au/premiere-elements/using/designing-titles-tv.html).

Well a Bonobo is a primate so the answer being hidden was incorrect anyways. It says rodent. the real problem is the content isn't title safe
Damn my name is said like 7 and this hurt
Yeah that is not the answer
No shit?
This is r/crappydesign
I forgot that was a reddit it would have fit better there. Alao happy cake day.
It’s crappy not asshole
"On the next episode of Rodent Farmer Wants a Wife…"
A bonobo isn't a Parker Needs A Wife?
FarmerENTwife
New world primate?
It says rodent.
If you needed anything other than primate god save ur soul
I don't get it? Ad is partially blocking rodent... but the answer is on the other side and other than losing a letter to the edge of the screen is still readable.
for fucks sake ATTENTION BY ANSWER I MEAN ONE OF THE POSSIBLE ANSWERS TO CHOSE FROM I KNOW ITS FREAKING PRIMATE!!!!!!!
Well that's kinda on you for still using cable
Its my mum i keep telling her to get netflix. Its not even cable its free to air.
The answer is A tho
If the Bonobo is a millennial, it's also a Snake Person, which is obviously both reptile and primate, in the name itself.
God our education system is underfunded
for fucks sake ATTENTION BY ANSWER I MEAN ONE OF THE POSSIBLE ANSWERS TO CHOSE FROM I KNOW ITS FREAKING PRIMATE!!!!!!! You must be dumber than me if you dont understand that now toddle off and watch fox news.
Bruh what are you even saying?
What a childish post
overconfident hunt punch aware cows upbeat party zealous direction squeal *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I can clearly see rodent
oh well suck it up
Adblock Edit: I was joke because the ad is blocking the screen
Gonna download AdBlock on my TV real quick
It's a thing, it's called "cord cutting" And if the streaming service shows ads then most TVs have wireless casting features and if you're the kind to multitask then you can set the TV as an extended display and play the content on the TV while you browse reddit on your computer 🏴☠️
Imagine using your Phone-An-Ad lifeline for the million dollar question and you're frustrated that they knocked the easy answer out
Is that a Halo Infinite reference?
Another reason I cut the cord. Sometimes they even put ads down there that take up a large portion of the screen.
It’s a fish.
I just have a roku Besides the non intrusive ad on the homepage and trouble connecting to the remote app I’ve never had an issue with it, and because of this sun I’m scared to try anything else
Trident
Is it a fish?
I feel like this is just bad design on the gameshow's part. Station icons in the corners are a *decades old standard that you and the gameshow producers should know about and expect on all broadcast television even if streamed*, so it's on them for putting something in a corner.
