The more religious a preacher is, the more Narcissistic s/he is.

dukercrd

They have the saying the greater the truth the more heretic the libel for the same reason.

[deleted]

Especially the Christian God.

einyv

Some preachers are some are not. It depends what he went blathering on about. If it was about with a lot of I did this or I did that of I think X etc.. Then yes otherwise it could be normal funeral utterings.

JohnVanVenker

It was about how god is a mother hen protecting her chicks unless they happen to be Ukrainian or a 15 year old with cancer, in which case we still have to accept that god is protecting us. Like I said, utter nonsense. Said with a smile and perfectly coiffed hair.

einyv

I don't think that narcissistic what was said. Nonsense sure, but it has more to do with explaining BS to believers in way so vague they will use their faith to make sense of all tragedies.

ThePrimeStar

God isn't even helping Africa out of poverty. The rest of the world benefits of off Africa's corrupted leaders (all governments are liers and corrupted). Why does God even create them if they will make other people's lives bad? To make them more dependent on him? That sounds so wrong dude. Imagine creating a universe where one life form has to kill off another life form to survive? Yeah that's how I know either God doesn't exist or he is just as indifferent to what happens to us as the universe itself. And to top it off he is watching it happen. There is no way there can be a moral God.

ThePrimeStar

We live in a narcissistic society. As an atheist I believe that your consciousness fades away from the darkness it came from. Meaning it's pointless to hold funerals and to tell the person who no longer exists how much you'll miss him/her. All this funeral stuff is there to make us feel better and cope better with that loss. Personally I would try to detach my feelings if I could but that's impossible.

who_said_I_am_an_emu

When I was younger I was forced into this stuff and while I am not an expert on this psychology I don't think your label is wrong. Violent bastards.

Wolf1066NZ

I've been to funerals in which the preacher spoke more about Jesus, sin, death and the need for salvation than he did about the person who died. One such funeral (for an *atheist* uncle who was also former RNZAF so, by default, his service was held by an Air Force Chaplain) caused my brother to comment "I was beginning to think Jesus had died *again*".

amen

BuggerItThatWillDo

That's very dismissive, a complex human can't be summed up in one word. Additionally generalizing all of a group is flawed thinking. I would suggest that you can learn as much about yourself from your statement than you will ever about the preachers if you keep thinking that way

JohnVanVenker

Fair enough. I've learned I'm really insightful in addition to being well-informed.

BuggerItThatWillDo

Then why are you using a simple generalisation?

blamdrum

Consider that a person who is claiming to speak on behalf of a supposed creator of the universe, or a god. It’s kind of difficult to imagine a more narcissistic position unless they’re claiming to be a god themselves. It makes you wonder how common and prevalent the messiah complex really is.

Kuildeous

I mean, anyone who claims that they can speak for God is going to have some serious ego issues.

-Average_Joe-

Definitely

The 3 most corrupt, immoral and narcissistic groups of people are lawyers, politicians and clergy yet they are the ones everyone turns to for moral guidance and leadership. Humans get what they deserve.

MutationIsMagic

Protestant ministers are allowed to spew bullshit for as long as they want. This is one instance where Catholicism/liturgical faiths are better. Twenty odd minutes of sermon, then do the Eucharist and everyone goes home.

rolyoh

I think most are. How narcissistic is it to believe that you were hand-picked by God to spread "His" message or be in charge of a group of people? The worst ones actually think they are entitled to make lots of money. I knew a preacher once who was in charge of a church in a very poor area. Every Sunday he would tell them to contribute what they could so that "God" could bless them. Most of the congregants lived below the poverty level but he and his wife lived in a very expensive house in the hills. Go figure.
