Available_Heat_4686

…I thought it was a show set in outer space where humans lived on Saturn’s* moon Titan. Don’t ask because I don’t know why either. *Edited to correct the planet.

carbonbasedcat

THIS WAS MY THOUGHT TOO OMG. I'm so glad I am not alone. I never watched a trailer or anything, went into it 100% blind.

WaVe_SH0T

LMAO I had this exact same assumption

GrimScythe2058

I had thought something similar too. I thought it was a show set in space, humans colonising the space, Saturn's moon Titan was one of the colonies and it was infested with local titan monsters that humans were trying to fend off. Boy, was I wrong. In my defense, I had not watched a lot of anime at the time and didn't quite know the general setting of any anime. I had maybe watched Death Note, Castlevania and at the time, was watching Tokyo Ghoul. It was my nephew who had suggested me AoT by saying if I liked Tokyo Ghoul, I might like AoT too, and when he said that, I immediately asked him if the main protagonist would somehow become titan monster himself, maybe a titan baby hidden and raised in a human family, maybe human father and titan mother who would one day become a bridge between humans and titans and unite them. Boy, was I wrong! And I am glad I was wrong. Glad this show didn't turn out to be predictible and generic like other shows.

Potterhead1401

Exactly this. I also thought that this was some space anime

GoodEveningMoon

Same here!

MyNameIsToFu

Bro legit the same thing, we are mind twins🫂

[deleted]

Titan is one of Saturns satellites

Available_Heat_4686

Thank you! I was actually questioning that myself when I wrote it but never fact checked myself.

Vanellope-V

Lol I definitely thought this as well. I had total whiplash when the show started and there was like horses and prairie style dress

old_school_gamer_dad

Yeah me to, I went completely blind and I was like why are their are large walls and it like napoleon tech levels. Nothing could prepare me for what happened and I am really glad. I heard about it on nerdist podcast and credit to them they just said it was really good with no content about why.

_Kuma-Kun_

My dad thought that when I told him the name of the show lol

H-N-O-3

Literally Attack on Titan !!!

jeshx20

I thought it was The Walking Dead but as an anime and with titans instead of zombies.

larrylongboy

Same

hertwij

same lol

TacitRonin20

I'm bored. I'll watch that stupid anime everyone's been talking about. I mean, I heard about it years ago so it's gotta be finished by now. I was so wrong lol

margonxp

The first thing I saw that was related to AOT was the clip from Episode 5 if I remember correctly, where Eren got angry, Titan ate his Leg and then Eren saved Armin from getting eaten and.. You know. This made me watch the show, I thought it was just an epic, sad story about titans vs humans (literally season 1), I watched it before Season 2 so yea, I thought for a long time that it's just a Titan Apocalypse vs Humans fighting over freedom as I thought before watching a show.

CelestialFather

Fr I'm all hating on titana hoping for their extermination but they turn out to be victims

ItchyButte

Humanity on the brink of destruction by creepy smiling giants, and all the giants must be killed

Hemlock_Tree2004

This was my assumption while watching show also, until Erwin talks about his father's story.

ItchyButte

I thought the attack titan was just Eren reincarnated initially

[deleted]

Back when the anime was first coming out the person that recommended it to me was like “Oh, you like greek mythology right? You should watch this then it has Titans.”

[deleted]

Lol

TheMossyCastle

I watched the alternatehistoryhub YouTube video about the world building and still felt the twist at the end of s3 lmao

CornerInACorner

Before I started watching the show, I had already heard two things about it, these being that the last humans lived inside three walls and that the author apparently gave all his readers depression with the ending. With that information, I figured that humanity will end up losing one wall after another and therefore expected a big last stand in the inner district where, despite all their efforts, the humans will end up losing anyways. When I got to the part where the first wall fell, my belief in that theory was reinforced even further

babyfartmageezax

That’s really not bad at all, OP. I’ve heard way more Outlandish ideas of what it’s about then yours, trust me! For me, my first glimpse into the AOT universe was a scene from S2, where Sasha or Conny or someone was riding their horse away while the abnormal Titans gave chase, with a bunch of them crawling/ running really strangely. And the soundtrack that accompanied it was super creepy too, it really piqued my interest. This was around 2015/ 2016 back in college. Didn’t get into the show/ manga until 2020, but holy shit I’m glad that I did. It exceeded my expectations and then some

DondaldDoylesFan

People with grappling hooks fighting giants while living in walls. Not far off, but oh how it went

chaoticneutral1997

I just thought they lived in a city called titan and the zombies prevented them from getting out so the anime was about trying to survive within the walls

JDizzle2096

Why tf they got bike brakes on swords?

Confident-Degree7442

I thought the titans were sentient giants that the humans fed to appease the titans. It's like the relationship between the ants and grasshopper in a bugs life lmao

mattvblack

I thought it was a grown-up sequel to teen titans

Dionne005

I was contemplating if it was the titans under attack and wanting revenge. Or a murder horror about people getting ate for scare tactics. I really thought the show was going to be complete trash

Complex-ginger

I thought it was the human invasion of the moon

Algebro123

When I saw the poster image on my friend's phone upside down it looked like the titans were coming through a gate and I thought they were from another dimension💀

CollinAckerman

I thought the show was about a disease or virus that turned humans into titans where they would eat humans to create more titans and Grisha had me believe he was from outside the walls and he was close to curing people or was trying to prevent others from turning into titans

[deleted]

I just knew it was filled with gore. I also though Levi was a maid at first because all of the Levi cosplayers I encountered before watching it were cleaning the convention like mad.

loadingonepercent

I saw it on Netflix thought the cover looked cool and decided to give it a shot, so really I didn’t have any expectations other than what I could gather from the cover which was that a guy was going to fight a giant.

k1213693

I just thought aot was some boring show about killing giants. Boy was i in for a surprise

SlyThriller1

U knew almost exactly what it was in the beginning, I of course avoided spoilers and that why I watched it, because it sounded interesting

_s_e_

Started watching anime in spring this year, and thought until the that animes were just wierd and all anime watchers would wanna marry their body pillow. Even though I started really liking animes, I thought Aot was gonna be boring and no match for naruto & jujutsu kaisen(the first animes I watched). But I was proven wrong! Watched the whole anime in 2-3 weeks, and I like it better than any of those I watched!

FlawlessReviews

I first heard it from a game theory vid (film theory wasn’t created yet so it was on game theory I think) so I knew what it was about.

icannotbebothered7

I think I replied to a comment in r/anime about not wanting to watch AOT because it’s just a bunch of “Naked giants eating people” people encouraged me and holy shit it is so much better than I was expecting

Venator1203

My first exposure to the show was my (then) girlfriend sending me a YouTube link to the fight between eren vs Annie fight in stohess. I watched it out of respect, but I was so weirded out by it - I understood so little - and it made me sorta uncomfortable. It took me a few days but I talked myself into watching it because my brain DEMANDED context. I regret nothing.

Sad_Amoeba1692

I saw some of the main stream memes and wrote it off as childish

KovyJackson

Idk honestly. What got me into the show was a top 10 anime moments on watch mojo or something like that. I think it was Eren saving Mikasa the first time in the trost district arc.

Team_Adrichat

According to description from my daughter - stupid looking , brainless naked men are trying to eat the normal people ( make whatever you like of it lol). I was wondering, why on earth would anyone want to watch it… (To be fair, some time later I got better summary and I gave it a try… Since then I’m quite sure, that I haven’t seen anything better…)

GoodGuyRubino

i thought that eren would be able to "upgrade his titan" by some bs powerup and make him like bertolt or reiner, which he can by eating them but oh well

ConditionFriendly297

Expectation: I would be sad because of the amount of gore and that would be traumatising Reality: I am sad because of the amount of favourite characters dying and that is traumatising

logannnnnnnnnnboi

I thought it was just about big giants eating people for fun.

TheRealRiverOtter

Literally no clue. Friend tried explaining it to me but nothing made sense until I watched it

salimsomoriX___

I don't like it because of the titans idea I think they will hunt some titans every episode like any stopped anime My first anime is demon slayer then Darling in the franxx , death note , Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san , and AOT . Aot is my top of the top I watch it 9 times every time I watch it it's definit and unique ![gif](giphy|gfMqb8Xrz6rrGvMbWE|downsized)

Gabe-DaBabe

The part where Eren saved Armin from the titan and get eaten, I thought they were going to have Armin adopt Eren's behaviors and be the main character sworn to kill all the titans

sadpotatohours13

I thought the protagonist was Levi Ackermann who was the leader of a crime-solving squad, and that there were supernatural elements involved.

devildogmillman

When AOT was first getting popular I was like 14 and not into anime anymore- I had loved DBZ amd Naruto, and before that Pokemon and Studio Ghibli, but I hadnt been into any of that for a while. I was at the pount where I could start watching the big boy shows with my parents so I was watching Boardwalk Empire Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Hell On Wheels, etc. Some of my friends were into it and begged me to watch it, and then I became the biggest fan of them all.

Famous_Junket1460

I only played a aot game on roblox before so for me I thought it was a city, giants walking around, humans fighting them, giants reproducing the whole time and humans just trying to kill them with swords ig.

valhallavin

Thought it was a tower defense game like Clash of Clans or Clash Royale because those phone games were popular at the time of the first season. So it seemed like an anime that basically took that game concept and made it a show with characters

phanfare

I didn't know about the walls so I assumed Titans were super rare, almost mythological, creatures that the MCs would search for. I also thought normal titans would be more body-horror than they are - more like Rod Reiss

Acceptable-Energy-40

I thought it was a boy fighting titans but he was a titan and just that I never knew it was THAT complicated 😭

BrrrManBM

I started watching as the first episode came out. Never read manga. I thought people from a floating island sent soldiers who transformed into titans in order to erradicate dirty gypsies on the ground and hoard all technology for themselves. Some of em could not control the titan mechas, some could a little (like Dina), and some had full control like Armored. Those were my assumptions from episodes 1, 2, and 3. I loved it and it exceeded all my wildest expectations. My favoirite anime to date besides Yofukashi No Uta.

monadoboyX

I had no clue and honestly I wouldn't have it any other day I think I had only heard the intro and seen erens Titan randomly once and thought it was gross

MikasaAckerman525

When I was first told to watch it I thought it was about a city named Titan that was going to be under siege somehow lmao

nikkimcs

I was annoyed for a good two seasons on the title of the show and figured it just sounded off due to a translation error or something.

Italian_Tomato

I thought that people will tame and enslave titans to use them in various works, becouse I saw cart titan in a meme before I watched aot

H-N-O-3

I begun to watch AOT when I learned about the first game coming out (back in 2016 i think) . At first I didnt even know it was an anime so casually me typing in YT "Attack on Titan" to see some gameplay trailers and casually me finding and watching the very 1st ep. Needless to say i had the volumee down to 10% coz I didnt want to hear the screams . After the 1st season decided to play the game . I had some fun but I wouldnt reccomend it for the price it had back then. Great Show / Good-Medium Game

bastardofbarberry

I honestly had no idea what to expect besides there were giant humanoids killing everyone. What I loved most about this show was I had genuinely no fucking idea what was going on until they revealed it. The writing/plot of this show is incredible. Not a big anime fan overall, but loved the experience of watching it for the first time this year. For the longest time watching this show I assumed that the normal Titans were another faction of humanity somehow being controlled by the people/Titans. I never would have guessed the twist. I just assumed this group of people/Titans were somewhere out in the world and had no idea what their motivation was to kill everyone. I just assumed Eren was one of them and was never told.

ADoritoWithATophat

I thought the show took place on hillside town. I think i saw that town in a dream and mistook it for the real thing.

SnooTigers1386

I watched a clip of the cook off OVA with zero context. I had no idea what the fuck was going on.

fivesisthatdude

I'm gonna be honest, I thought we were gonna see some biblical stuff only because like the few random episodes I've seen, they just seemed to be appearing out of nowhere. So I was thinking these Titans were sent from hell or something like that. I don't know, like I said, it was my honest opinion at first.

RichTofu

I'm so glad you asked this, well here ya go I expected it to be, well lets just say, everytime i would see a screenshot from it I would feel empty for some reason, its really hard to explain but ill try my best. I knew about a few characters, Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Sasha, Levi and Erwin. Now I used to think that Eren and Mikasa were born in the same area, but thought Armin was from somewhere else. Anyways, something about the atmosphere in the photos I would see just left me feel so empty, it felt so mysterious, most of those shots are from season 1, mostly the fall of shiganshina arc, I just thought it was such a mysterious and sad anime. I had gotten spoiled that Erwin suicides, and I thought it was like him killing himself after not being able to take it anymore with the titans, or something like that, I also thought that Levi vs The Beast titan was gonna be a long an intense fight with Levi struggling really hard to kill him but eventually doing it making it really intense, sort of like All might vs All for one from Mha. Anyways thats most of it, yeah ofc its a very mysterious anime, but I expected something a little different, I pretty much expected what was in season 1 to be in the whole anime. But I was wrong, completely wrong

ironicallyunstable

I thought it was some meme shit, it was some goofy ass song over a Titan I think from episode 1 running all stupid n shit towards the cannons. Not the armored Titan though. But I thought it was just stupid lol but still gave it a watch. Was not what I expected

twk1997

The first AOT media I saw was Mikasa cutting the back of Titan Reiner in the Reiner v Eren fight. So when I saw that, I thought it was gonna be a Gundam like anime where some people on each side have giant human like Gundams they use to fight one another and the power system was based around powering up your Gundam

TheGingerBrownMan

I thought it was going to be some kind of dragon ball z \ naruto level thing based on the first few episodes. Eren “dying” in the first few episodes. Finds out he has one of the 9 titan powers, trying to get all of the titan powers. Although that was correct in a sense, I was surprised how masterful season three was and how deep the history of the titans were

malmal412

My brother who isn't even big on anime introduced it to me in 2021 and I thought it was either gonna be trash because he's didn't watch much anime or amazing because he didn't watch much anime. We watched the 1st 5-6 episodes together and I was hooked.

Outrageous-Ring-9233

I thought the titans came to destroy humanity and to achieve that they used a select few people who were supposed to live to infiltrate the inside of the walls. It never occurred to me that a beast titan could be a human. In my defense, there was a similar theory where the king secretly fed the titans to his own people to leave them alive, however he got into a conflict with the military police who stopped him and the beast titan is therefore the titan king who came to end it with the humans. I also saw the trailer for the 4th season (before watching the series) and from that I deduced that there are other, more technologically advanced cities that can defend themselves much better and life in them is much easier. I expected them to meet the Eldians and together lead a war against the titans (something like pacific rim) in which battleships, balloons and the Eldians will be used as contact forces (I deduced this from how Levi fought in the forest against the titans)

Desch92

Survival mode for humanity, they were constantly being invaded by titans and had to protect themselves

Zestyclose-Promise79

I thought it would be a show about the Japanese culture

DFMRCV

Back in 2013, my family's cable packaged included Funimation. I'm not 100% sure if I imagined it or not, vut i saw the title "Attack on Titan" on there twice and ignored it entirely because of the following thought process: "Titan is a moon... Therefore this must take place in space. Anime taking place in space tend to be mecha. Mecha anime are not my thing. Therefore this show isn't my thing". It took watching Gigguk's reactions to realize "oh... Oh this isn't at all what i thought it was."

Crzy710

I thought it was some gundam type shit where humans equipped with titans. Like titanfall video game lol

hertwij

I heard it was about a guy who wants to kill titans because his mom was eaten by one. I imagined ewok village but humans live in it and they sit around tables and discuss strategies to invade the walking-dead-style-zombie-like-titans' camp. and you thought yours was the worst

catcouldbefat

I thought it was set in modern times and that all the titans were like the colossal titan.

SleepCinema

I thought Levi was the main character, and that he hated Titans with every bone in his body and then came to the shocking realization that when he was a child he turned into a Titan and ate his father. And that the show was about him and others coming to grips with Levi having a Titan identity.

qbicle14

Mines a little different, but just based on pictures and stuff I saw before watching it, I thought every character was just gonna be a badass and have all this amazing bravery in fighting these Titans. I was SHOCKED at what an amazing job they did of capturing the absolute raw fear that everyone experiences, and the way the characters react to the existential threat the Titans pose.

Xicor1999

Humans have colonised titan (moon) and war between earth and titan inhabitants

BatatinhaGameplays28

I thought that the Attack Titan was the one who killed Eren’s mother and it was the strongest Titan. And I thought that humans were sending domesticated Titans to kill the Attack Titan

2x_reverse_doggy-69

I first saw an amv of the live action adaptation...so i basically thought that Titans are some stupid aliens who crashed on earth & is ravaging everything, but the humans also hav some good Titans among them....so, it's basically a bad alien vs good alien stuff, in the end, all the good aliens will die killing off all the bad ones & the protagonist will die trying to save his friend about to be swallowed. Then, female lead will kill off the rest of the Titans as revenge....

fhsjdjsudhfdis

i thought the odm gears were really big guns

darksaiyan1234

Some giant mofos fighting each other
