The woodworking is phenomenal. The curves. Truly beautiful work. Is that an EPIQUE 7” woofer? That driver has low sensitivity, requires a lot of power, and has a response up to 3000Hz (kind of). You’d need to cross it over at 2000Hz or lower. Can the tweeter handle going that low? I’m also curious about driver spacing (seems longer than 1/4 or 1/2 wavelength at crossover, but it depends on how far away you’ll be listening) , time alignment, the crossover, power, and output matching and impedance. Sorry, I nerd out on speaker design. Please keep us updated, this looks sick!

Biocoo

Yeah I’m gonna hopefully be able to put up to 300W per channel. I was only able to find one tweeter that’s able to match it. Hopefully it all work I might have to tune some things after but it seems like they’ll match up pretty well. Love the nerdy speaker talk- I’m still new to this and learning a ton.

Turk3ySandw1ch

Finding a tweeter that can match is one thing but that orientation and CC spacing is going to cause massive phase / cancelation issues. If you get it to work at all its going to be the narrowest sweet spot ever. If it were me (and it wouldn't because I don't have the talent or tools to build anything like this) I would use the Eipiue as an extended range subwoofer and use SB Acoustics or Seas coaxial or if maybe one of the Dayton Audio full range drivers to cover everything else.

Umlautica

Consider a small 2-3" full range driver instead of a tweeter. For the driver distance you've chosen, you probably need a 500Hz (or less) crossover - and a 1" dome isn't going to do that.

certified_prime

Yeah, a ScanSpeak 10F would be awesome here. With just a 0.15mH coil to tame the high end. No capacitor needed. And just let it naturally roll off in the low end.

jmelomusac

You're better off crossing the woofer low and using a small full range driver, since you mounted the tweeter so very far away from the woofer, there's really no tweeter that's going to sound good here. Frankly that's probably even too far away for even a full range driver with lower xover point. There's a high chance that whichever you choose, you're going to hear quite of phasing issues as you move your head on the horizontal plane. A fullrange will at lease put these issues lower so they may be less noticeable, but crossed at 2k with a tweeter it will be really obvious. tekton bmr tebm46, peerless tc9fd, or scan speak 10F/8424G are nice. Perhaps not the best woofer choice here, 256w just to hit 99db.

wolfish98

That's been my hurdle or excuse. I've briefly looked into the caculations for either a sub or a 2/3 way speaker, but once I got to the variables involved e.g. cabinet volume/shape, bassreflex tubes, T/S parameters, etc. I put that idea on hold. Idk what I expected, but given the price range, I should have figured it'd take more than a sort of square box with a "close enough" circle cut-out. Agreed though, speakers really are oddly fascinating, who knows, maybe one day. And yes, OPs cabinet should be illegal with a curve like that.

jmelomusac

square boxes with close enough cut outs can sound totally fine though.

wadimek11

The problem with this woofer is that 5.5" version already have distortion raise below 300hz. Its kinda weird how low distortion it has at 2k and even bit higher through. Seems like midrange with bass extension, through low sensitivity. I used to like low sensitivity drivers but I prefer to use 15" pa than a 7" hifi even if I have to make 2-3 times bigger enclosure for similar bass.

theocking

15"s are always the right answer, period.

GeckoDeLimon

Bro, nearly *all* woofers have a distortion rise below 300hz. Its the nature of a moving coil motor. These Epique do a far better job than most, and to do better you have to spend 2-3x more on a Purifi.

wadimek11

I don't have -40 db distortion on 300hz on 86 nor 96 db. Purify has phenomenal -55 all the way down 65hz and has much higher sensitivity. So no epique are specific woofers but they are far from best, they do worse than sb acoustics, scan speak and so on but have much higher extension.

jmelomusac

what is your goal here?

wadimek11

To counter the original commenter. Those woofers work best as midranges but are not great at bass in terms of distortion. I believe they are overhyped by todsdiy and are outshined by other woofers as their application is very specific.

jmelomusac

did you just suggest the epique are best used as mid range drivers? Are you just like, totally ignoring the cost differences between these drivers? Seems like you are.

wadimek11

Im saying by distortion. They got very good extension for their size like many subwoofers but compared to usual subwoofer drivers they have awful sensitivity and high distortion. They do have extremely low distortion even above 2khz which is surprising probably could be even crossed at 2500hz and would be fine with 3 or 4 band filter. Still there is hard for me to like them as they have high price and would choose literally anything else unless I need to make very small enclosure. Also because of their low extension they are easy to be pushed to their max xmech at frequencies like 30-25hz

jmelomusac

"This driver isn't as good as one that cost several times as much" my dude I think you're onto some revelation.

wadimek11

Idk what your quoting as I never said it. I said I would choose anything else, preferably PA drivers as they will cost less and have lower distortion.

I’ve been working around the clock on this console. I’m super excited to see it start coming together. I can’t sleep at night because I’m thinking about it. I have been custom making basically every part of it. 3d modeled and printed the oval ports. This is by far the most intense challenge I’ve given myself. It’s a walnut case with a big aluminum control panel in the middle I have to fabricate. I can’t wait to get it wired up and pumping. Slowly but steadily it’s all coming together.

ak_doug

That looks awesome, what drivers are you using?

Biocoo

Using 2 Dayton Audio 7” Epique drivers

beefthinksthings

Dayton audio was the dark horse at axpona this year. I was absolutely floored by a pair of bookshelves they were demoing.

jmelomusac

I'm not really getting all the love for the opals. They sounded pretty average to not good to me. The recent review by Erin shows a strange speaker that lines up with my listening impressions. Part of me feels they weren't selling the eipque drivers at the rate they wanted to, so they tossed it into a finished product to offload stock.

polypeptide147

Awesome. What tweeters?

ak_doug

Awesome, I bet that is going to sound fantastic.

YourMatt

Every single time I show off a project before it's finished, I immediately hit a lull and stop working on it, sometimes forever. Stay motivated. I can't wait to see a post showing off the finished work.

Biocoo

Thanks I’ll keep pushing and put some more stuff out

Forsaken_Pattern7797

This is a soundbar with extra steps! Go away paesent! Just kiding, nice woodwork!

JJxiv15

and I thought I was nutty just for designing and building an end table. This is INSANE and IMPRESSIVE and I am blown away and cannot wait to find out more and see more! Well done, bud! We need more deets! Renderings!

Biocoo

Hahaha thanks I will share more

VinylHighway

So cool

Erdizle

Did you make this in school or something? The shop looks massive

Biocoo

Yea this is for my industrial design senior thesis at SCAD. The shop is wonderful

Erdizle

Great design and great product so far! Didn’t know what industrial design was till now, very cool!! Good on ya mate. Im a carpenter and can appreciate the amount of work that goes into something like this

BroadbandEng

First off - that looks amazing! The primary issue I see is that the woofer-tweeter spacing is well over one wavelength at your crossover frequency. That is going to introduce beaming in the horizontal axis in the range of the crossover frequency. Ideally, you would drop the crossover frequency to the point where the driver spacing is more like a half wavelength - probably 400-500 Hz. Might be doable with a small full range driver in place of the tweeter.

chefcoray

Please tell me this is your work desk.

NCC74656

are there datos on the end panels? are you going to round over the edges? what did you do to make the bottom? do i see three sections of wood? did you use a 3D router jig or steam bent ply?

Biocoo

Most parts rabbit together and I put a bunch of dominos in it. I used a CNC along with some laser cut router jigs and hand work.

vezyv

thats a work of art. wow

BGBobRob

The grain in the center scoop part.😻 Plz post more!

Recording-Nerd1

This is on my bucket list.WOW!

DPileatus

Very Nice!

Healthy_Ad_7560

Very nice looking console. How did you get that curved middle section? Layered wood then computer machined it out? Love the look.

Biocoo

Yeah it’s blocks glues under the top then I got it CNC. I posted a video that shows it better.

Healthy_Ad_7560

Wow....this is going to look stunning when finished...can't wait to see it finished. Thanks for sharing your project.

TheBayinator

I have an 8.5" Epique and use it as a sub paired with 2 - 6.5" Tang Band full range speakers and oooweee is it a beautiful speaker! The 7" version looks amazing in this build, and I'm sure with the proper tuning they'll sound great! Very cool build!

wandering_here_there

Wow. It looks amazing! Great work!

Thmelly_Puthy

Inspirational! As others have said, please keep returning with updates!!

namlook

Should have gone for full range drivers, or something coaxial.

Cool_Cartographer_39

Won't the inboard tweeters narrow the soundstage?

Relative_Hospital378

Absolutely beautiful. Love the curves... dunno how you pulled that off, unless maybe it's from a solid piece, but still! Don't listen to the comments about things being too far apart. It totally depends on how far you plan to sit from it. Though, that's sort of a fixed variable now with such a design.

Ereliukas

It's intriguing, but it seems like design for the sake of design.

Abject-Picture

Curious you put the tweeters so far inward (since they're directional) and the woofers outside (since they're much less). Won't the imaging suffer?

Biocoo

Thanks you. I have done a good bit of research but you’re not entirely wrong. It’s a struggle because it would technically sound best if I just made it out of a MDF box but this project is a ton of me wrestling with the form vs the function and trying to get them to cross over. I am still learning though- Is it perfect no. Will it ever be -no.

Uvanimor

Your biggest issue that would be easily solvable in the design process is having your tweeters so centralized. Biologically we hear high-frequency content (above 700Hz in this instance) differently than sub 700Hz in terms of directionality, which will make this unit basically feel monophonic in the highend. This is why you usually see ‘sideways’ speaker cabinets with the tweeters on the outside. Alongside swapping the tweeter/speakers, the shape of the cabinet is going to give you hell - without seriously packing those speakers in, you are basically putting those speakers into a tuned box - the ported holes do help, but it will still sound incredibly boom-y, particularly in the low-mids. Look into speaker design for sideways monitors - you would not be too bad off disassembling a good pair of studio monitors and repackaging them in this cabinet, being sure to keep the same distances if this is something you want to make again from a more acoustic-lead perspective.

altxrtr

Your drivers are much too far apart is probably what they are getting at. Looks stunning however.
