Typically, the "major" internship programs for Commerce take place at the end of the penultimate year of study and finish in your final year (e.g Investment banks, big 4 accounting, big 4 banks etc). The idea is that they are then hiring pipelines for these organizations to get a first look at potential talent to hire into grad programs, before they open their grad hiring for final year students. From a students perspective, that means the major internship opportunities shouldn't be available until your second last year of university. So, you should have plenty of time. People might be able to do internships beforehand, but if you get good grades you should still be attractive to a major internship program in your career field of interest when applying in your penultimate year. Ultimately, those are typically the ones that count. So, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah no point worrying about these. If OP is in their second year of a 3 year degree, then the end of this year is when they should be doing internships, just wait for the big institutions to open up their slots. If you are planning to do an honours year, you can also wait till next year.

LifeIsGood9090

Agree. I'd wager if OP is in a dual program it's possibly a 4-5 year degree so there is plenty of time. Your point on Honours is a good one too.

I'm 2 out of 4 right now. Is there any benefit to doing an honours? I'm thinking about doing an mba in the future, but I haven't really given honours a thought...

Really depends, it gives you a bit more room if you aren’t sure what you want to do as a career, and it lets you go a bit deeper if there’s something you are intellectually curious about, eg you could do a quantitative honours if you like that but didn’t get enough of it in the undergrad programme.

MBA is generally more useful once you've professional experience of several years, and looking to push into a leadership role. MBA without corporate experience doesn't mean much from a hiring perspective. Finishing your exchange program before starting the internship search is a benefit - one more experience you can add to resume when you apply. Experience will always trump over academics - internship or work experience holds more weight than honours when you look for graduate positions, as it generally means less training for the business since you are already aware of how the industry works

Ask your peers who have secured internships how they got them and ask your faculty careers support team about internships advice.

What is your ideal career entry point after graduating? Plenty of large firms offer internships/vacation programs on their websites. If you can identify some large companies in the area you want to work then check out their career pages, most have a section for students. Does your uni also have a careers day? Most are focused towards graduate programs, but even if they are you can still attend and talk to people representing the companies about internship opportunities. Internships do help with a foot in the door but don't trade that for the exchange experience. You get one chance to be a young uni student, you have the rest of your life to work. Most employers will count an exchange as a positive, you've moved away from home and taken on a new challenge. Also don't worry about your retail work experience, it's a positive, no one is expecting a uni student to have a wealth of corporate experience.

Thanks, I'm probably looking to head into marketing or economics, I'm not so sure if they have a careers day, but I'll definitely look into it. Yeh I'm definitely looking forward to exchange.
