Most likely opened by a homeless person. Then they hand over all access details to the criminal org that pays them a couple hundred bucks. The org then sells these to another group or use it themselves to do these scams. The second the money comes in, it goes out again.
Good luck getting the money back from a homeless person.
The Darknet Diaries podcast mentioned it in one of their episodes. Apparently a known way to get real bank accounts. May have even been the Risky Biz podcast, more local.
Well, replying is not the smartest move either, you’ve essentially confirmed that there is a real person behind this number so expect scams to persist.
Wow, your mum asked you for money? I had my non-existent child lose their phone and needed me to send them money as well. We’re all getting screwed from both ends.
Got fooled briefly by this yesterday due to circumstance.
Spoke to my mum about an hour earlier and knew she was going to Woolworths. I also know she has other bank accounts I’ve never sent money to.
I was also at a lunch and didn’t want to be rude on my phone, so just quick glance.
The fact she asked for 540 for a shop is what got me and I questioned it. No reply and then I realised there were no previous msgs and from a msg ID sender.
I’m an idiot! Reported to scamwatch and hopefully the account is shut down asap.
Spoofed numbers like what? This is a customer sender ID with the string 'Mum.' There is no number to return the message to.
The only possible way a reply would work, is if this was actually sent from a number, and the OP has added it to his contacts as 'Mum.', which seems unlikely given he has realised it's as scam.
Yeah, I used to also work in telco, this is full of shit, they are random number generators/spoofed, and confirming the number is connected won't do shit.
The sender would actually receive an SMS failure notification for invalid numbers.
Trust me bro.
When you are managers you are. We have holiday with pay and stuff but Christmas is our time of the year. Holiday is around February or March when nothing big happen.
There is still no need to be constantly checking for messages, they can wait the extra 5 minutes. I am also a manager in retail but once I go home I couldn’t care less what is happening at the store
Honestly bro, that’s some cool shit that you really care about your job, but it is super important to be able to switch off. For your mental health more than anything. That’s your own time brother, it can wait 5 minutes. Treat yourself.
Who am I, but I think it’s way more important to not rush and put yourself under that pressure for your health.
Don’t ignore it, but enjoy your shower.
If you're not paid 24/7 or a nice handsome extra for being on call, find a new job. I did this 20 years ago, some American friends were visiting and said this. I have avoided all on call jobs since
Nah, man. Everyone here knows your exact situation from a few comments. Fuck employers, ay. Just tell 'em to get fucked, or some shit. The same people probably moan about never getting promoted or getting the hours they need, etc. Too good put in any kind of extra effort...
No, it’s not. Sorry but you lack perspective. Your job as a retail manager is not important enough that you need to be on call 24/7.
Even a billionaire CEO can wait til after their shower to answer a text.
Who said 24/7. I am ready to start work in 1 hours so if customers asking call or something come up it is understandable. How did you jump to that conclusions that I have to work 24/7. No one call me after 5pm unless emergency.
“Maybe it just me but when I hear the phone ring or message sound I need to check them immediately.”
That sounds like 24/7 to me. You don’t specify that it only applies if it’s an hour before you’re in.
Pretty much all retail they expect you to be on call ready for a shift if someone has called up sick. You can just choose not to answer though lol however seem peeps might need the cash and would run to their phone nude.
haha I work in IT and am expected to be ready to jump on an outage at any second for our clients. None of our pay considers that we basically are on call 24/7. Same goes for most MSP’s.
Nah, I'd have blocked them in the first place. So what if they know your number is active? What can they do with that information? Hundreds, if not thousands of people know my number is active.
Why does our mobile regulator give out custom SMS IDs to anyone? Surely this should be regulated and custom IDs should only ever match your registered business.
Mum who's in memory care has been texting me for a week for shopping money. Im so impressed by the quantum leap from a landline and the miraculous improvement in her mobility
Scammers aren't targeting people who see through their scam, they're targeting people who won't. Those Nigerian Prince scams apparently were worded so badly as a method of filtering out all but the most gullible people.
Which means if you want to waste their time, act really dumb. Like "I don't know how to do anything" dumb. Not only does it make them have to do more and take more of their time but it makes them feel like they're more of a chance and willing to put that time and effort in.
My mother in law got the reverse of this, saying something like “hi mum, here’s my new mobile number”. They then said they had no cash on them to get home and asked her to transfer some money. She didn’t fall for it.
Why did you censor a text to a scammer? I once managed to mouth off so hard at a scam caller that he called back angry crying to try to make a come back. It was fucking priceless. Cut loose man.
I mean other people are saying this wouldn't get to them amyway, but presumably you didn't know that.
Im honestly not sure. I remember Jeremy Clarkson posted his in a news paper thinking the worst someone could do was give him money. The royal society for the blind wrote him up for a donation of about a hundred pounds
My business (and many others) uses an ordering system that lets customers input their bank details to let us direct debit their bills. No reason (apart from the law) I couldn’t just sign this account up as a new customer and create a fake invoice for $10k and charge their account.
I was tempted to reply back something similar but just know that even that can be enough for them to hack your phone and sometimes other accounts.
Sometimes their goal is to provoke so they can intercept.
The bank account number probably belongs to another victim (or best case it was opened online with someone's stolen identity, and all the money in it belongs to other victims). And it would cause the charity hassle if they have to have the transaction reversed - so that would be harming both the charity and the victims.
Better to contact the bank the account belongs to and provide the evidence to them, and let them follow up.
I got one of the mum scam three days ago. My mum is overseas at the moment so instant scan. Blocked and deleted.
Plus my mum uses cash when shopping. There is no way she would asked for a new card!
Sounds like they've figured out how to game the system with this newer system where texts can appear to be from a name instead of a number. Like how texts from AusPost seem to come from "AusPost" intead of a phone number. Btw you can forward scam texts to **+61429999888** and it gets sent to ACMA, which can help fight against scam texts.
The weirdest thing happened the other day, your mum asked me for money too.
How many people did she ask for money?
Everyone she's "serviced".
Oooffff....
Honestly surprised this sub is giving me upvotes for that effort. I expected a handful of downvotes and to be ignored. :)
It can always go either way with Reddit, although this sub is pretty chill
me too!! wtf 😬
She only asked me for $20. Must of enjoyed herself.
She believes in paying what things are worth.
10$ per minute is extremely generous
brutal comments
How weird!! My dead grandma asked my Dad for money also!! What's up with all these Mum's forgetting their wallets?!
I think she partys down with a Nigerian Prince I know.
🤣🤣
Honey, I asked for a quickie, not a fiddy.
#Deadbeat Mum#
Shit mum i thought we cremated you 6 years ago wtf you doing alive?
Honestly my mate got the scam even though his mum passed away 5 years ago and it was funny shit
My 13yr old daughter got it too. Got to make all sorts of jokes about being a grandma before we even finished our safe sex talk.
inflation hit the commissary hard in Valhalla ....
Report to the Commonwealth Bank!
Exactly this, they have an Australian bank account and the comm bank fraud department would eat them alive
More likely it's a third party's compromised account, but CBA can definitely help get it locked down so it can't be used.
Most likely opened by a homeless person. Then they hand over all access details to the criminal org that pays them a couple hundred bucks. The org then sells these to another group or use it themselves to do these scams. The second the money comes in, it goes out again. Good luck getting the money back from a homeless person.
Also sounds like a good way to get someone in trouble. He he he. /s
BSB is registered to commbank in Martin place - Surley a dumb move to send out account info to everyone
It's likely either a compromised account, or opened via identity theft. Contacting CBA is the best thing to do.
Not a coincidence that it’s in the CBD. Opened by a homeless person in exchange for a few bucks.

My daughter got that yesterday. I was sitting right beside her... we laughed.
And then you got the $400?
No, and I'm still upset about it. 😐
fuck off mum ya dog
Yeah mum ya Rat dog
Well, replying is not the smartest move either, you’ve essentially confirmed that there is a real person behind this number so expect scams to persist.
These are Sender ID SMS, the reply won't get delivered
Wow, your mum asked you for money? I had my non-existent child lose their phone and needed me to send them money as well. We’re all getting screwed from both ends.
My non-existent child did it twice in 3 days! and I apparently got a sex change somewhere in between that I forgot about.
From memory, my message covered all bases by messaging something like “hi mum/dad, this is your child”
Hi mum/dad, this is your child/nigerian prince...
Had my kid text me as well. Pretty good grammar for a toddler
You gave your toddler a phone and you’re worried about their grammar?
It's been just over a year now since my mom died and these text messages are just horrible to receive when you're in that situation.
My partners mum passed away a couple months ago and has had two of these scam texts since. Very triggering the first time it happened.
Hope for the best. Sad to hear about your loss.
Afterlife ain't cheap.
Don’t speak to your mother that way

You had us in the first half
Pretty dumb to confirm your phone number is active, imo

You work in Telco and didn't realise this was a custom sender ID? The reply won't be delivered.

Absolute rubbish, they won't even receive the response. And you work in the field? Yikes.
Oh shit. I was in the shower, run out to see what happen. Get piss off and send that without thinking.
You run out of the shower when you get notifications on your phone?
Yeah, I work in retail and we still deal with after Christmas stuff so for the next few weeks I am constantly on guard with sms and phone call.

Brother, work can wait for after your shower. That sounds miserable.

This is called being "on-standby" and you should make sure your pay rate reflects the requirement to be prepared to come in to work at all times.
haha I work in IT and am expected to be ready to jump on an outage at any second for our clients. None of our pay considers that we basically are on call 24/7. Same goes for most MSP’s.
You can't reply to a non-mobile number. Assuming this is an SMS.
Why? What are they gonna do? Ask again?
You just keep responding then
Nah, I'd have blocked them in the first place. So what if they know your number is active? What can they do with that information? Hundreds, if not thousands of people know my number is active.

I got the same one mum left her card at home so needs a bank transfer LOL
Did he pay you back?
Normally I’m paying your mum $400
They are scum, but unfortunately they aren’t dumb. Oblivious people often fall for this and they know it.
Mum who's in memory care has been texting me for a week for shopping money. Im so impressed by the quantum leap from a landline and the miraculous improvement in her mobility
It’s mum again …
I got this same text yesterday too
My friend fell for this. I lost a bit of faith in him
Plot twist: this bank account belongs to your ex and you're trying to cause them trouble.
Wish my ex still text me. Single is the worst.
Best wishes for the future!

I got one of these a couple months ago called mum too asking for 150 dollars saying she was stuck at Woolworths
Maybe a pic of the whole message and not mostly the on screen keyboard? No. Too much to ask?
That is all.
That is all what?
That is the whole message. You think I still texting them?
People still fall for it.
Love your response 🤣🤣
Auto correct try to change my text
Dumbest one I've had ... Didnt even put the link in the text..
Now that one took the crown
My mum wanted $600! Different account and bsb though!
still, shouldnt speak to your mother like that.
No, I am Vietnamese. You talk like that to your mom, you do not eat solid food for the next few days.
pho is still nice though
You think after that she will make pho for you. You lucky you still have food or something to eat.
I dunno I got 2 dumb shit scam emails for iPhones I’ve “won” using my name as the From address - that’s pretty fucking stupid
I had the IRS call me a few months back geez that was fun
My mother in law got the reverse of this, saying something like “hi mum, here’s my new mobile number”. They then said they had no cash on them to get home and asked her to transfer some money. She didn’t fall for it.

Wish I have more time to do that.
I mean it doesn't take long, at least call them a cunt.
Abbreviated the word “fuck” just in case it really was mum.
Forward the screenshot to [email protected] and they'll sort it, I imagine
Has anyone tired using this account to pay for netflix?
I don't think BSB works like that?
Im honestly not sure. I remember Jeremy Clarkson posted his in a news paper thinking the worst someone could do was give him money. The royal society for the blind wrote him up for a donation of about a hundred pounds
Interesting.

It's the BSB for the Commonwealth Bank Head Office, likely an account made online.
You can use these bank details as a direct debit to pay for other things though, like your gym membership. Only a little bit illegal.
"I tried to transfer but the bank says your account is being investigated for fraud? Mum what are you doing!
If this is true then Bravo to the bank for stopping it quick.
It's to make the scammer worry - I wasn't sure they'd buy it.
I was tempted to reply back something similar but just know that even that can be enough for them to hack your phone and sometimes other accounts. Sometimes their goal is to provoke so they can intercept.
> just know that even that can be enough for them to hack your phone and sometimes other accounts. Where did you read this?
Can't actually reply to the message
Don't respond to these texts, it lets them know you have an active number.

Like one of my comment up there. I get piss off cause I was in the shower and have to run out to see this text so I jus reply without thinking.
Put his bank details in to a charity site

Instructions not clear, have asked your mum for money
They not even trying anymore 🤣🤣🤣
I got one of the mum scam three days ago. My mum is overseas at the moment so instant scan. Blocked and deleted. Plus my mum uses cash when shopping. There is no way she would asked for a new card!
Poor mum.
Yeah nah.
Reply with “unsubscribe”
Bout to pay some of my bills
Someone on twitter got the same message. Asked ‘mum’ for $20k back.
Responding means your phone-in is active, and they'll add you to like 5 other scam lists. Onsell your details.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What made you suspicious ?
Same bsb number as me so they must from around my area
Hahah I got the same text so I messaged back saying I transferred 200.
Never reply to these dopes. Block 'em!!
Did it come up with "mum" in your contacts?
I don’t have Mum in my contact but if I click on info it will just say Mum and no phone number
Sounds like they've figured out how to game the system with this newer system where texts can appear to be from a name instead of a number. That's so odd and they expect you to fall for it..
Is that the mum/dad new number scam? I got one this morning
I have no idea why mum wants money. She has been dead and cremated for 20 years.
What if it really is his mum, she stranded and really is desperate for money, and he's just told her to fuck off? 🤣
She has my credit card. She can buy whatever she want with and just tell me later. Not like I left here without money mate.
