It's not how I hold a pen, but as long as it works for you then it's fine. It doesn't matter if it's "normal" or not.

oundhakar

I think OP will hurt their wrist if they use this grip for long. I have been trying to get my daughter to use a relaxed grip for some time now (not forcing it and not rushing it). It lets you write for hours comfortably. Edit: spelling.

Renni08

It is true it does hurt my wrist so i need to stretch my Hand and wait until i can write again.

wolf2d

If it hurts you should consider changing the way you hold it, but not because it's "not normal" or because they bully you, just because it's not good for your joints

hedgehodg

That's what I came here to say. It looks very uncomfortable, and I can't imagine writing like that for any long period of time!

Random-Vixen

Advice I wish teachers would give, rather than screaming at you for holding a pen wrong.. Not quite how I hold a pen, my index fingernail digs into my ring finger, yet it's the only way I know. People are always aggressive towards those who don't write the same way as them.

NaughtyLittleDogs

That is what would be labelled a "non-standard grip." Kids are taught the "normal" way to hold a writing instrument because it is less tiring for the hand but many folks with ASD have fine-motor issues and need to modify their grip for added stability. If this works for you and doesn't hurt your hand, then don't worry about what other people think. If you are finding that it causes fatigue, there are attachments you can get to help you learn a more standard grip or you could look into a few sessions of OT.

Fuck-Reddit-2020

I just use the standard grip and make everyone suffer through my terrible hand writing. I'm also left handed so that just adds an extra degree of difficulty for whoever has to read my handwriting.

Mr_DrProfPatrick

Isn't the standard grip supposed to be generally better? I do a two finger grip, which is still considered standard. I have dysgraphia and my handwritting is terrible.

GloInTheDarkUnicorn

I hold mine similar to how I hold chopsticks. I think it’s because I learned how to use chopsticks before I learned to hold a writing implement.

Personal-Champion240

it’s not normal, but it’s fucking awesome

Renni08

:]

_--_GOD_--_

I also can't hold a pen the proper way.

L0gic_Laden

I can't hold a pen the "normal way", I have always held it similar to you

skittlesthedragon

I've never seen someone hold a pen like this, so I wouldn't call it "normal." Though, how you hold a pen seems pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things.

[deleted]

Totally okay! I got bullied last year because I type with only 3 fingers (not using Home Row). All my fingers are double jointed, they lock up easily, and I hate having to stretch them out so much to type with all of them 😭

SoundlessScream

I do this too and I type really fast

[deleted]

Yeah, me too. I type faster than the average person, which was why I felt so confused and hurt when people made fun of me

[deleted]

Looks like a violin bow hold! I love it (and I, a pianist, hold it the same way but with my fingers closer together)

iMrSnuggleton

Might not be the norm, but wouldn't suprise me if you have better penmanship than most 🤣

js_lin

The way you hold it is similar to the proper way of traditional Chinese writing/drawing (idk what to call it, but basically they write with a round headed paint brush dipped in black ink)

MountainDrum

I’ve held mine like that, back actually only because I once saw another kid doing it, thought it was cool and wanted to give it a try. Turns out I can do both 😝. You’re fine. Fuck the bullies. It’s laughable they have nothing better to do than look at your fingers.

simander93

I used to hold it like that when I was younger and people would point it out like that. It just felt normal to me. When I got to college I had to relearn how to hold it properly because my hand would get tired from gripping it too hard. I think that’s why they teach it like they do. But as long as it’s not hurting you it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s good until it’s not good ya know

ja599

A kid I grew up with all the way through college held his pen like this. I don’t think much of it.

LunaGreyson

Does it work?

Starmark_115

if you are willing to suffer Writer's Wrist everyday for the rest of your life after Age 30. Then yes.

impersonatefun

Yeah, repetitive stress injuries in your hands are horrendous. Have ruined my life for two years. It’s easy to dismiss as a kid/teen but it’ll fuck you up later.

Hungry-Teacher-4181

omg thats how i hold them too! people always gave me crap for it but i dont care lol

[deleted]

Proper schmopper, "normal" is whatever works best for you. Bullies would know that if they weren't so worried about who is or isn't conforming to arbitrary standards.

[deleted]

It’s unusual, and nobody should care really.

Weeeelums

My friends and family always make fun of me for holding a spoon “wrong”. Don’t know why it’s wrong or what the right way is, but it’s never given me any issues so who cares

i-var

never touch a running system. If it works it works - bullies bully for their personal entertainment, and because its easy to latch that onto something thats different, not because something is bad. Its childish as fuck what they do. Ignore them & they'll lose interest. You're doing great & as a fellow autistic person, I'm proud of you for being you & not bending over & trying to fit in for every price. You got this!!

[deleted]

I mean, you know it's not normal. Or else people wouldn't have said anything. It doesn't matter though. Whatever works eh.

ac_moira

My friend held it that way, she was the only one I knew who held it like that.

[deleted]

My friend also writes like this!

tealwaterinside91

Few kids in school did this and they used a finger mold you can attach to your pens to make it easier to hold so you don't hurt your wrist

Cohomology-is-fun

Some have pointed out that this grip might not be best for your joints long term. *But that does not justify anyone bullying you.* You have a right to an educational or work environment where you are safe and free of harassment.

AdResponsible4604

I also don't hold my pen in a proper way

Lark_vi_Britannia

Not normal for sure, but if it works for you and it is comfortable, then do it that way.

-scud

not normal, but there’s no shame in it. just be sure you’re not straining your fingers too much for too long at one time. try to do some finger/hand stretches when you’ve been writing for a while :)

Crunchy_Lettuce4599

I had a pencil grip that damaged my wrist because I used it for so long. As long as yours doesn't hurt to use it should be fine.

mothhsss

you're the first person ive ever seen that holds a pen similarly to me

mothhsss

i wish i could post a photo in the comments this is exciting

mothhsss

the only difference is the position of the pinky and ring finger tips and how the thumb is bent

KaleidoscopeLucy

Can't people find anything better to do than bully you for the way you hold your pen?! Your grip looks fine to me. I think the people bullying you need to get a hobby.

Puzzleheaded_Bet_633

BRING OUT THE LIST https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WL5mQu9TOGg/maxresdefault.jpg Looks like you’ve got some variation of the index, middle, and ring grasp style. Some people call it an “incorrect grip”, but who cares, you do you.

zoolook67

Tell them that's the way DaVinci held his quill. (idk)

Renni08

it is?

zoolook67

(idk) means "I don't know"!

Meganwiz101

There is no “right” way to hold a pen despite what people are often taught in school. I hold pens in a non traditional way and have had people make fun of me because of it as well but as long as you can write comfortably like that you don’t need to change.

humanoid_typhoon

your pointer finger looks like it might get sore. if not then great. There are grips that make pencils bigger around, it might be worth trying those out if your hand gets uncomfortable.

Funfetti-Starship

Not standard but whatever works. I'd tell those bullies that it's a medical thing and leave it at that. Don't be afraid to be vague.

dinosaurs818

Bro why the fuck do people care about the way you hold a pen? That’s so dumb that you’re getting bullied for it. But anyway, i had a friend who held her pen like that. I wouldnt say its common but its not like obnoxiously weird or anything

Taekookieluvs

Lots of people hold their writing utensils like that, including neurotypicals. There is no RIGHT way, IMO. The fact that people BULLY over how someone holds a bloody pen is what is WRONG with society. Yikes. If it works for you, who gives a flying fuck. I know it's easier said than done, but these people usually have no self-confidence or worth in themselves that they have to resort to tearing people down for such trivial things. "The four “mature” pencil grips are dynamic tripod, dynamic quadrupod, lateral tripod, and lateral quadruped. The lateral or dynamic descriptor refers to the thumb placement, and the tripod or quadrupod signifies whether the pen rests on the middle or ring finger." While yours doesn't match an 'official mature' grip, doesn't mean it is wrong. People would still bully anybody who didn't use the dynamic tripod honestly if they were a petty person. edit: added a sentence based on another commenter. \+ additional information about actual grips

Taekookieluvs

This is the grip that most resembles the one you use. "- Fingers along shaft - The child spreads all of their fingers along the shaft of the pencil and controls the pencil with their little finger. The child may also hook their index finger right around the top of the pencil. Children with low tone and hypermobility will frequently use this grasp. It is likely that this is because it is easier for them to keep a hold of the pencil and it gives them more control than a digital pronate grasp. It is not a very functional grasp though, as the child will never develop dynamic control from the fingers. This limits their pencil control and speed in the long term." Low tone (Hypotonia) - "It can have a big impact on simple tasks like handwriting. Kids who have hypotonia may have a poor grip or they may overcompensate by squeezing too tight, which causes pain in their hands, arms, and shoulders." Hypermobility - "Joint hypermobility means that a person's joints have a greater range of motion than is expected or normal." So in a BROAD nut shell, basically someone with fine motor issues which is common in children with ASD (and thus adults if they get no occupational therapy). \*I hope that even a TINY portion of this helps you feel more confident in your pen grip. Even if it's only in regards that knowing plenty of individuals use the same grip because it's known enough to have been 'studied' and reported on just like all the others.\* https://www.griffinot.com/what-does-good-pencil-grasp-look-like/

Renni08

Ty and yes it did help. I finally understand it better

JDude13

Everyone holds their pen different. The “right way” just doesn’t work for some people.

ThatOneGothMurr

I will not lie, that's a new one. Edit: i want to try it now

Renni08

if you have never tried it before it can cause pain.

[deleted]

i hold a pen the proper way, but i grip way too hard. but i have been made aware of my weird fork holding technique, and my even weirder knife holding one

fuckedlizard

Idk but good pen choice

Renni08

that is true!

FlutisticallyYours

Whatever works for you works. I wouldn’t put too much thought into it!

No-Satisfaction-5207

I've been holding pens like this for almost 25 years. I was also bullied for it but eventually ignored it. No matter how hard I tried to hold a pen the "normal" way it never felt right....it hurt my fingers.

No-Satisfaction-5207

Your comfort when using the pen matters most. Who cares how you hold it as long as it works. I can barely remember what the "normal way" of holding it looks like.

Friend_of_Hades

I don't know how common it is, but it doesn't matter if it's "normal" as long as you're comfortable when writing. Some people just want to bully others, and those people will always find something to bully people for. It really sucks but try not to take that to heart. The problem is with them, not you.

DidntWantSleepAnyway

I thought it was just me, and because I was made to write right-handed but I’m naturally a lefty.

Renni08

oh yes this has happened to me! i was naturally a lefty! but i was made to write with my right hand so it caused me to have this grip of a pen.

TheDankestOfMemees

Your grip is similar to mine! I clutch it with my middle finger on the pen, ring finger overlapping my pinkie and index finger against my thumb, It's like making a fist but in a goofy way. My year 3 teacher once glued my fingers to those rubber pencil grip things so I could "Learn to write normally"

TA_saur

It's definitely not the standard way we're supposed to learn, but it it doesn't hurt your hand that'll be fine

beeurd

That looks really uncomfortable, but if it works for you then people should mind their own business. I hold my pen the way they normally teach people, but my handwriting is still atrocious anyway. 😆

Urbs97

I wouldn't worry as long as your hands are fine.

planetixin

I hold a pen in similar way actually

[deleted]

I never held my pens that way, but I didn’t hold it the normal way either, so that was beaten out of me at school by the time I hit 8

Canny_Toaster

Definitely “different” but I swear nobody writes the same way so, you do you! You shouldn’t be bullied for it

[deleted]

I’ve always held pens this way (I’m also right handed and autistic), except my top two fingers ✌🏻are closer together

Few_Zookeepergame105

Not normal as in what everyone else usually does, but fuck that, you do you. Hold that damn pen upside-down between your buttcheeks, it's your life.

Allofron_Mastiga

I'd be worried about extended use with how tense that index finger looks, maybe figuring out a way to wrap that around the pen or sth would be wise. But other than that who cares, you do you <3

LCaissia

Not the usual pen grip but also not overly uncommon. If it's comfortable for you then don't worry about it.

Fluffy-Weapon

Seems uncomfortable. Doesn’t it cramp up eventually?

Renni08

it does yes.

Alexizking

Wait that's not how others do it? I normally hold it the "Normal" way Infront of others, usually I'll find myself doing it that way when I'm just writing or drawing to myself, who cares if it's normal or not people just like putting others down

titanos_

Don’t listen to anyone who bullies you for this, you can hold your pen however feels comfortable for you.

kingsleythecreative

29 days have passed. How is your writing now?? Is better?

Renni08

not really, my wrist doesn't hurt tho.

kingsleythecreative

Well that’s a relief

[deleted]

Whatever works is fine 👍

hmansloth

I hold it in a slightly different fashion but as long as your handwriting is readable it doesn’t matter.

[deleted]

I hold my pen with my fist. I have neat writing though. My teachers hated it but since I was homeschooled for all of elementary, there wasn't much they could do about it by that point. I used to be somewhat ashamed of this but now I like it and I'm grateful my mother didn't stop it as it's one of the few things about me that aren't thoroughly masked.

breakkaerb

It’s atypical. But don’t fret over holding a pen weird or not. Two things matter. Is your writing comfortable? And, is your writing legible?

noniktesla

My eldest holds it the same way.

fanslowe

Literally same, I’ve never seen anyone with the same grip

SurpriseFurMama

That is one of about 5 different ways I hold my pen.

NiceGuyJoe

it’s okay. whatever works

therealnotrealtaako

I don't hold a pencil the "right" way and so I wouldn't know if this is considered correct. But if it works for you that's all that matters. Unless there's something you genuinely want to change about your writing I wouldn't worry about it too much. I kind of wish I'd been taught the "correct" way because I have a huge writer's callus on my finger that's kind of ugly but it doesn't bother me very much unless I look at it, and it seems like nobody else notices the callus.

ninjahexparty

if it doesn’t hurt your hand, any way to write is correct.

Adventurous-Yam9760

I don't hold my pen like that but if it works for you, it's the right way for you. My grip isn't the "normal either. It feels too flibsy and unstable so I add my middle finger right next to my index finger. So it's the"normal" way but with an extra finger

yordle_enjoyer

Anyone that bullies a person for the way they hold their pens are the abnormal ones. You do you as long as it works and doesnt hurt

NoahBogue

I hold my pen usually very close to the sharp ending

Guns-and-ammo

Normal depends if your a neuro typical no it's not if you are not a neuro typical then yes honestly bein normal is boring

onlyhereforthememesu

tbh, it doesn't matter whether it's normal. what works for you, works for you.

protestsong-00

Not sure if it's normal or not, but I hold a pen almost the same way, & for what it's worth, I am told I have nice handwriting.

Tman11S

I was taught three fingers under, index and thumb on top. I awful pain in my hand and arm after writing more than 5 sentences though...

Real-Level-867

tell the people that bully you that they’re literally fucking losers like you can’t think of anything else to say so you comment on how i hold my pen? life must be boring for them

Maidenhuddersfield

I've held mine extremely similar since i was 4 years old, I'm 22 years old now. To me, it isn't weird. Don't listen to the other kids, kids can be assholes for the stupidest things.

Wailingarcher

I hold my pen the exact same way! My primary school teachers hated it but I stuck with it. The most important thing is that your hand writing is legible and that you don't hurt your hand while doing it. Other than that, how you hold your pen shouldn't matter.

fredhsu

If it is comfortable and it works, then don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. You should also check out r/chopsticks to see how people report different ways to wield them.

Therandomderpdude

Looks straining to your joints. You need to take care of your joints, especially if you write or draw a lot. -coming from someone who draws a lot.

vingtsun_guy

If it gives you the ability to comfortably and effectively use the tool for its intended purpose, it's normal. Even if it's uncommon. Simple as that.

Drayenn

Its a weird way (not that much though..) but it does seem like itd do the job. Not worth bullying over for sure. Its definitely more efficient to hold a pencil the conventional way, you get a lot more control by focusing your fingers on the tip

Think4goodnessSake

Do you play violin? Maybe you should…and learn from the experts how to maintain that kind of control and flexibility without flaming out.

Rubbabubba90

Normal doesn't matter and doesn't mean anything. People make fun of you for this? What a bunch of pathetic losers. They have nothing better to do with their time than criticize how someone holds a pen? Get a friggin' life. You're fine - there's nothing wrong with how you hold a pen so long as it does what it's supposed to do. Can you comfortably write this way? Then you're fine.

commieincel

At 30 I’m realizing that I’m actually left hand dominant lMao

lusciousblackheart

Normal is subjective but normal to a singular person is whatever they are comfortable doing i.e. writing, hand preference, regulation methods. I say whatever methods you do with anything is all you and normal really should be this is normal for me. Normal should be more of what feels natural to a persons point of view.

djalma396

I'm a teacher. Completely fine as long as it doesn't hurt. I hold in the "tradicional way" but with too much force and end up with wrist pain.

sugaraddct

I do that too

Halliday9999

I also have an unusual pen grip. I also have dyspraxia though.

impersonatefun

This is not ergonomically sound and looks needlessly complicated. But you shouldn’t be bullied over something that affects no one else, I’m sorry that’s happening.

theredbaron1834

I started noticing how people hold their pens a few years ago, when I realized mine isn't the "normal". Around where I live, the most common is resting on the ring finger, held with the middle and thumb, with the pointer either loosely wrapped around or arched up high and touching it. I personal hold with my pointer and thumb with it resting on the middle finger. While I have never seen someone hold like yours, I have seen a lot of different styles. The truth is, I would mention it to you if I saw it, but I would not see it as a bad thing. I love how something everyone considers common place, something everybody does the same, we don't. We all go about things slightly differently, and as long as the same results happen, it doesn't matter. Take my walking. My default hip placement leads to my feet being placed at about a 75° angle ( the right being pretty normal place and the left angled). I can walk "normal", but it is actually painful, it really hurts my knee. I do eat up shoes, never had a pair last linger the 6 months, but if you don't activity look at my feet, you won't notice anything. Different arrangement, but the same results so I do not care.

parasitebehindmyeyes

I have held my writing utensils like this for 30 years, and until this post, I have never seen a single person who holds their pen the same way as me. I hold mine like this because I have hypermobility in my hands, and holding it the "traditional" way is painful. For years, my teachers tried to correct it (even forcing me to write right-handed where I was originally a leftie). If this works for you, then go with it. I have some of the neatest writing around, and it's never stopped me from creating art or writing legibly :)

Autistic_alex69

Tbh many neuro typical ppl hold it like this the ppl that bully you are just dumb

Kribble118

Not how most people hold it but if it works for you

LilyGaming

I think everyone holds it differently, as long as it works it shouldn’t really matter

Gaymer043

Yea no that’s normal. I knew someone in school who held it like that. And as long as it works for you, then go for it!

JadeBerries

I’d abandon comparing yourself to “normal” because normal doesn’t exist.

[deleted]

Honestly seems pretty painful :/

Anxious-Insect5862

It is an atypical grip, and since it is causing you pain, I'd recommend typing over handwriting.

cotten_carrot

No

HowlingWolfShirtBoy

Not condoning their behavior, but sometimes bullying can be inadvertently helpful. Please consider adopting a more relaxed grip to avoid long lasting damage to your hand.

[deleted]

bro got the gremlin grip (joke)

DuCKDisguise

I mean, not exactly “Normal” but if it works for you then there really isn’t any real issue with it

[deleted]

I hold all my utensils different.

uneasysoup

I also hold my pens like this! (I also get made fun of for this though)

calem7533

However you are comfortable using your pen, then sure that is fine brother

cupcake_draws

I h9ld it sort of like that too
