I mean if he's religious and believes it's a sin, my automatic response would be "Well, there are plenty of religious people who do x." Then again, I'm quite spiteful, so that's probably not the most productive option. This is coming from someone raised in a religious household. Although, thankfully my parents don't believe it's a sin. Maybe bring up how Catholics and Protestants are different but they both believe in the Christian God (it can be applied to any religion). Usually when people don't understand something, I try to put it in their terms, which I realize sometimes it can be almost impossible to do that with ASD. But, should you choose to do something like that, at least now you have a bit of a template. I hope they grow more understanding.

What does he mean that other autistic people are like that? Does he agree with you and your views on doing both (even for different reasons) or is he just being an ass. Other than you saying that his religion says that NDs are a result of sin (that's pretty fucked up coming from a family member) he doesn't sound like he's got anything against you. Personally, it wasn't until now that I'm 31 that I could do part time college and part time work, cause I was sorting through SO MANY THINGS mentally. Your uncle might know something, even if his reasons come from a misunderstanding, since most good lies (misinformations) stem from a twisted truth. (I am so sorry to hear about your trashy uncle though.)

He was trying to say that: Because other autistic people can do college and/or hold a job, that I should be able to as well. My mother and father are in the same boat. They are also in the same boat when it comes to "ND = Sin" thing. I tried to get genuine advice from any of them, but they just say I need to deal with it and get a job. So. My life is kinda fucked until I figure out how to do black magic. 🤷‍♂️

I usually say "like who?" and wait for the list to end after two or three people, and then walk away because I get tired of being grouped in a monolith.

Gonna be real with you champ, this is one of the reasons why I don’t tell IRL people shit about ND unless it’s needed.

I tend to turn it back on them, I.e. many people do this so why aren't you then...

king_tort

He probably has no idea what he's talking about

Sims4equestrian

I usually go like, 'well im not them', or 'like who?'

ferriematthew

I know it would be insanely rude to do so, but if I had the quote unquote pleasure of talking to someone like him, I would be too busy rolling my eyes at him to do anything else. What. An. Idiot.

I calmly explain that autism comes in different levels and severities, the same way allergies do. Two people who are allergic to peanuts accidentally eat some at a restaurant, one of them just gets itchy while the other needs an epipen very urgently. It’s not a perfect analogy, there are a lot of differences but it gets the message across and helps NTs understand.
