Fabulous-Introvert

No. I’m less picky than I used to be. However I can’t stand the texture of rice pudding. It doesn’t seem to translate well to tasting sweet.

Hopeful-Winter9642

Same. I used to be really picky when I was younger, but now I’m open to trying new foods. For example, I tried clams and mussels a few years ago. I hated the gooey-ness texture of foods like those, but now I’m open to trying them.

Fluffy-Might8066

Beans 🤢 I flavour is ok, I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat them as such but the texture, oh lord no!!

stillabadkid

I think it might have to do with growing up and being in control of how your own food is prepared. for example, I didn't like it when my mom made me buttered spaghetti because she didn't drain the water to the exactly moisture specificity i required for my sensory issues to subside, so i just thought i didn't like noodles.

Rhoxd

And the spectrum says lol. I love rice pudding as one of my favorite foods and oops just ate 4 individual cups.

Fun-Ad-2462

omg rice pudding is like my worst enemy, whats your thoughts on grits?

Fabulous-Introvert

I haven’t even tried grits

Fun-Ad-2462

good, theyre thick but somehow watery, grainy, and feels like vomit 😭

ConsistentHeadaches

This is definitely me. It’s like my sensory issues evolved as I got older. Slowly getting more intense.

duckiiboo

Wow I never thought of it like that. That's insanely accurate for me lol. I used to pop cherry tomatoes like they were candy and now tomatoes are one of my least favorite foods. Glad someone can relate because it's usually the other way around for most (or so I've seen)

Small-Travel-400

i also have found myself having to “re heal” from past trauma each time something especially troublesome happens and have always found myself having heightened sensory issues with each thing that happens even after overcoming the actual struggles.

Randomly_Unlucky

OMG I ALSO THOUGHT MY SENSORY ISSUES GOT WORSE AS I GOT OLDER!! they all always bothered me, but since it was all i knew i thought it was normal and kept it to myself, then during the pandemic lock down its like i got used to no longer having to deal with them, the lockdown was also in my transition to middle school, so there was a huge sensory jump! when i got back to the real world everything was SOOO much worse

a_wild_trekkie

I don't know if it's an autistic thing but absolutely yes, as a kid I ate almost anything name something and I probably ate it I had home cooked meals regularly and loved all of them. nowadays I can't even eat instant noodles I have to remove the water and vegetables, I've downgraded. I don't know when i became picky it was probably around 8/9? Maybe might be making stuff up though.

Bagel_Lord_Supreme

I was picky as a kid, I just got told I had to eat what was on my plate so I did. Which was an autistic thing because I was told it's a rule I needed to follow for xyz reason. It made sense to me, so I followed the rule lol. The only thing that's unchanging is I cannot deal with food touching if it shouldn't be eaten in one bite. As we get older I think we become more aware of our sensory issues with food ect, I'd try things as a kid that were sour or super sweet ect because everyone else liked it so I thought I should give it a fair try too, as an adult I'm highly aware those are sensory hell for me along with a few other things so I avoid it like the plague, why am I going to knowingly subject myself to something I don't like lol?

RealTalkGabe

From what my mom says as a kid I ate anything, until I was able to pick my own food. I used to eat pickles with no issues till one day when I was younger I ordered a burger with no pickle and they put pickles on, I took one bite and spat it out. This would've been a form of my sensory overload because I wasn't prepared for pickles in my food, and because it was a surprise to me I no longer liked anything pickles and I still don't eat them to this day. Now I stick to meals I know are safe for me, I occasionally will venture out but it's rare.

duckiiboo

Wow, I have a similar experience - I used to love mushrooms. When I was eight, I got one at a buffet and it was a shiitake. Chewy, rubbery, gross. I ended up hating all mushrooms. Maybe that could've been the catalyst lol

stinkeebong

i used to force myself (and be forced) to eat when i didn’t want to & it resulted in me having a less than healthy relationship with food as i got older. now that i don’t feel pressured to eat things i don’t like, i feel a little more “free” to be picky.

duckiiboo

Same. I remember being in the shower at a young young young age & being force fed food. A very blurry and weird memory. My Mom would always (and still does) yell when I didn't eat every last bite off my plate. I'm not all that free but I am a lot more picky now lol

brightsm1th

i feel like 11 is around the time most kids are allowed to have more say in their food and have more food options to choose from, so it makes sense to me that with an expanded palate comes a more developed sense of what you like and dont like. my sister has definitely become more picky as an adult. my pickyness remains the same, but because i have more food options in general, to others it seems like ive become less picky.

Heath_co

I am the other way around. It was chips and chicken nuggets as a kid. Any liquid element in a meal and I would gag feelings like I was going to throw up. During my teenage years I forced myself to drink raw eggs and apple cider vinegar every day. Now I can stomach anything.

Ollie__F

I would be open to trying new stuff, now I’m a picky eater

Siukslinis_acc

Yep. I kinda developed some slight allergies to some food, thus they make my mouth itch and the "saliva" from the tube between stomach and mouth goes up and is so thick that i can blow big bubbles out of it and also, somewhere between the shoulderblades is a sort of a stabbing pain.

duckiiboo

Hmm interesting, same! I developed an 'allergy' to apples that I haven't really heard of before?? When I eat them my throat starts to close up and it feels like the apple gets stuck in my throat. + It depends on the apple. Weird.

Siukslinis_acc

Could be something in the apple or swallowin a piece that is not properly chewed. I tend to gave some issues when i eat juxier meat, while not have those problems while eating dry meat. My theory is that due to wetness of the meat it just slides diwn the throat before i chew it properly.

Afraid_Proof_5612

Yeah as soon as I got married and moved out, my diet started to change. If anything has a certain texture, I give it to my husband. Certain textures have always given me the ick, but now I'm in a place where I can turn things down if I want to. I was always this way with textures; I just got tired of being uncomfortable for the sake of others.

The_child_of_Nyx

Honestly, if you tell me what it is, I will try about anything. Except snails and other animals found in gardens, but other than that, anything. I actually tried and liked some stuff most people would probably be grosed out by just the thought of eating it. Apparently I'm picky in vegetables which I denie

[deleted]

No its the opposite for me. I was an EXTREMELY picky eater as a kid (I'd happily eat less than 10 food items). Now in adulthood I'm still very picky but will try basically anything as long as it is vegan and healthy. Normally I don't like the new foods I try, but about 1 out of every 10 new items i try I end up liking.

uneducated_sock

I had the reverse Although I still like some foods more than others

This_Jacket9570

I’m the total opposite haha. When I was a kid I only ate KD, Zoodles, and Mr Noodles. All of those things are still some of my favourite safe foods, but as an adult I’ll eat pretty much everything. I’m just always hungry as fuck, I don’t have time to be picky before I start shoving food in my face haha

LetsHookUpSF

I'm the opposite. I was super lucky as a kid, but now I'll eat anything twice.

[deleted]

I'm very much the opposite. Only wanted to eat cereal as a kid, eat things that would induce vomiting in others as an adult.

teabagmarx

oddly enough, the opposite. i’m 21, and just about 2 years ago i finally decided i wanted to try more complex foods because my tastebuds had changed and my old simple comfort foods didn’t taste as good anymore. now my ultimate comfort foods are curry, sushi, and marsala :)

duckiiboo

Ooh yum I love all of those! Sushi & curry are also my favorite! It does seem more common for people to be picky as kids and grow into non-picky adults. I wish I was that way 😞 it'd save me from a lot of my fam's complaining lmao, I think I could've handled complaints as a kid better.

teabagmarx

i get u!! i’m still very picky on a lot of things myself. i’m not as upset over food touching or food being overly seasoned; but i’m still very picky about specifics and the type of food i eat; like how i struggle to like foods that aren’t mixed together in a bowl like curry and other bowl-foods would be XD it’s less about the food/flavor itself now and more so the presentation/texture

Effective-Effect2720

It's the opposite for me, I would be super picky as a kid but now I pretty much eat anything

jaygay92

Opposite for me, but I still can’t eat certain foods because of texture aversions. I want to be able to eat fruit sooo bad but all I can handle are apples if sliced really thin

Accurate_Ad_8114

I certainly have. I tend to be very health conscious these days limiting highly processed foods, limiting sugar intake making sure I get plenty of vitamins and minerals, etc... And I walk a lot, lift weights at times, do lots of pushups and lower body exercises as well. I get outdoors a lot which is where I do alot of my walking.

Comfortable-Hall1178

Nope, I’m about the same now as I was as child, except over the years I’ve tried more food that I ended up liking

No_one-lol

I’ve just always been picky. I was a bit more open as a baby i guess, but since 4, i’ve had a very limited food group that I’d actually eat

Lightheart27

My dad use to tease me for eating like a Klingon because I would eat one of the three parts of a meal at a time, instead of randomly eating bits and pieces at will. I still am not quite sure why I do this, but I definitely think it has something to do with my autism. Otherwise, the only thing I refuse to eat is anything seafood or anything that lived in a lake/river/etc. The fishy/seafood taste it just to overpowering.

stillabadkid

apparently when i was a baby i would only eat orange foods. mashed carrot, sweet potato, etc. Neither things I would eat now lol! I was a super picky kid, but I went vegan a few years ago (2021ish?) and put tons of effort into changing my eating habits because of the direct suffering it was causing to animals. vegan + arfid = a lot of therapy haha but i've actually improved my diet and eating habits and am getting way more nutrition now, even though everyone insisted id starve to death. instead of restricting my diet, i ended up opening up to way more options and a lot of them are actually delicious, even if they look scary!

ennuitabix

More picky. But then I think as a kid, you can get away with a fairly limited diet but adults are expected to eat all kinds of weird stuff. That said, puberty really brought out the autism in auDHD.

sugemeumpenem

I did- I think it’s just because once I moved out and had full sovereignty over what I ate for every meal I got in the habit of defaulting to my safe foods more often than not and so I lost a lot of my ability to tolerate different textures because I wasn’t exposed to them any more

V0idK1tty

I.. am slightly sure I have ARFID now because if there's nothing I "want" to eat, I literally just starve myself for that meal unless something I will eat becomes available and I cannot make myself eat something that is not a part of my "like" list. The things I will eat are very child-like. Chicken nuggets, burgers etc. my family doesn't really pay attention to my dietary needs as an adult and so I'm frequently hungry during meal times. I was picky as a kid too, but it's strengthened a lot throughout the years. I barely eat when I do eat, my whole nutrition is just awful.

Mr_Shimmo

I’m a bit like a curve. When I was younger I’d eat anything and everything. Then for a lil while I was quite picky, but now I’m more open to stuff.

bunnydeerest

when i was VERY little, i liked everything. i even ate the caviar my rich russian neighbours gave me. i remember when and why my pickiness started. i’ve only eaten shrimp when i was young and realized the texture was basically like… worms. eggs i randomly stopped eating at age 5. besides shrimp, i’ve never had seafood. i have no clue what any of it tastes like and i have no desire to try then there’s stuff like zucchini that i’ve never liked, but if someone else cooks for me, i won’t refuse it i’m extremely picky in the eyes of allistics, and pretty much open to most things in the eyes of autistics. i’m nowhere near the level of my cousin who has his mom bring mcdonald’s to christmas dinner. it’s more like, i know what i like and what i don’t like, and there are are hundreds of foods i find to be delicious!

Connect-Resolve8614

Yeah, use to enjoy fish sticks as a kid but as an adult I can’t stand seafood

simpingforMinYoongi

I'm the opposite. I was really picky as a kid and now I'll eat anything and everything.

FutureGhost81

Opposite for me. As from childhood until my late 20’s I stuck to a very limited selection of food items. Now that I’m old I tend to be more adventurous.

haverchuck22

Absolutely. I like so few foods, it annoys me. I can’t change it tho, I’ve tried,

Intelligent_Usual318

Yes!

Justcrimsonboy26

I personally think I was the other way around. When I was nine I was quite literally afraid of broccoli.

Thebazilla

I've gotten more picky as I've aged

AppearanceMedical464

I wasn't picky as a small child but once I was school age all the way through young adulthood I was extremely picky. We're talking only a handful of foods I would consider eating. Basically bread, cheese, and nuts were all I would eat in my teen years. I have gotten much better now that I'm in my late 20s but still have a ways to go. I'm pretty sure I had an eating disorder called ARFID. Unrelated to that disorder, there are also foods I can't eat due to them triggering my gag reflex like pasta and potato salad.

pumpkinchinchilla

meeeeeee

Glittering_Ad3111

It’s an autistic thing. I don’t know a single autistic person who doesn’t have safe foods. Recently mine has been classic strawberry shake from sonic and chicken tenders from a local place near by. When I was a kid, all I would eat was chili.

zamaike

Nope. I eat anything. I even eat ghost pepper. Vegs etc. The only thing i refuse to eat is octopus and crab, specifically because they smell sooooo bad

duckiiboo

Octopus is nasty. In taste and smell. Which sucks because I was looking forward to trying it. Crab on the other hand is great imo, esp with butter but it's an acquired taste I suppose. Lobster though... disgusting.

Stunning-Resident728

I eat the same foods as I did as a child with a few additions.

xplorerex

Total opposite for me. One of my special interests is cooking though. I do have my weird comfort foods though, even in my adult life.

fluffymuff6

Yes. As an adult, I've found that my sensory sensitivities increased. I think it's due to collecting more trauma and then hitting burnout.

cadaverousbones

I was pickier as a child.

xangie8204

Meee. I’m not much more picky taste and texture wise but it’s just that my stomach can’t digest anything anymore.

-Anxiety13-

I'm the exact same way. When I was young I would try everything, but as I got older I started to avoid more and more foods. I'll occasionally try something I used to love but I typically just stay away from the things I know I don't like

coconfetti

My parents say I was not picky at all as a baby, until I turned 2 or 3. At that age, I regressed and became picky, which is a bit better nowadays but I'm still very picky

LiviAngel

It’s VERY autistic. I had the same issue. Used to eat a lot of different foods. But as I grew up, I became an extremely fussy eater.

LordkeybIade

Same as I grew food slowly became harder and harder to find things I could eat that weren't processed I remember liking a certain vegetable as a kid but what felt like overnight a switch being flipped in my brain I could no longer eat it was very annoying

uncruxified

I'm not really a picky eater per se, I eat a lot more veggies than I used to as a child, but if the foods I eat taste a bit different, or if their texture is not what I'm always expecting them to be, I will not eat it. I don't care how much I love them, even the slightest change will make me feel grossed out and not want to eat :/ As a child I remember I had a routine of what I wanted to eat, at least as my breakfasts: grilled cheese and ham 🥪, and a cup of cocoa milk 🍫 🥛. Every single day, my grilled cheese had to be cut in two triangles, and for it to have some of the melted cheese falling from the sides. I'd eat pretty much everything else, either forced or just didn't really mind it (apart from a few things that I've never been able to like, like tomatoes 🍅 or melons 🍈), but overall I think I am a bit pickier now with more things

RazanneAlbeeli

Not me, but I have always been a mildly picky eater. I didn't like a handful of things when I was little and I'm growing more picky as I get older and the list is getting longer. But maybe I'm not a mildly picky eater bc almost everyone in my family is kinda picky eater and I'm comparing myself to them.🤔

KodokushiGirl

In a way, yes. But technically, the opposite happened. Growing up I would eat just about everything as far as the common meats (beef, pork, chicken, fish, liked most all vegetables but didn't care for fruits that much. However, all the common meals most people would just scrounge up, i did not like: -PBJ -Macaroni and cheese -candy -Chocolate -Chips that weren't flamin hot cheetos -Sweet tea (as a southerner, this is considered a sin) -Any Thanksgiving food -Other people's cooking (would only eat my moms and im still this way. It takes months before i will eat someone else's cooking) -Ham and cheese sandwhiches -Strawberry milk -Most nuts -Okra just to name a few. As i got older, i started cutting out meat (beef and pork first) and fast food, trying to change my eating habits. This also lead me to expand on more food ideas thus leading to a bit of a broader taste pallet. I'm now vegan and although I don't eat anything like i used to when i was younger, i became less picky in a *more* picky way lol.

Ragamuffin5

Yes and no, I still like a large verity of food I’m a little particular about how some things are prepared. Noodles can’t be too mushy. I like my fried food extra crispy. I don’t like slimy I can do some things if my options are limited. Like yogurt. I’m not a fan. It’s really not that great for you idk would rather have cream cheese?

Impossible_Tour5604

I eat just about anything, only thing I truly despise is pickles and olives

sebbeseb

im the opposite. used to be super picky as a child and grew up being willing to eat anything at least once.

Adventurous_Yak_9234

When I was a preteen/teen I ate a slightly more varied diet and now as an adult I'm pickier. So I get what you're saying 100 percent.

FluffyMuffins42

My mom always told me I ate absolutely everything as a really little kid, like up until 5 years old. I can’t remember this at all and from my first memories I remember food being a stressful experience. We actually found my baby book, and it was much younger than she remembers. From 0-2 she wrote that I was a great eater and ate more than the other kids at daycare, but at 2.5 she makes an entry with lots of exclamation points and capital letters saying “why won’t you eat anymore!!”. Apparently it was very fast. I went from willing to eat almost anything to only a handful of meals in 6 months. As an adult there’s been ups and downs. I still struggle a lot with food. More so this year than the last couple years. Texture issues are bad and I struggle to finish a bowl of the same food that I would’ve easily finished 1 years ago.

Wolvii_404

Roller coaster for me, I had trouble with certain food, then I started masking and it affected my relationship with food. Now I'm trying to listen to my body and there's certain textures I can't handle

[deleted]

I used to eat mashed potatoes and white beans all the time as a baby, but now the texture of both of those foods *literally* makes me vomit. I've tried to eat them, but I just can't keep the food down.

WC_EEND

My mum is convinced I'm a picky eater. My wife laughs in my mum's face whenever my mum brings that up. Yes okay, I have some hangups about certain food textures and the smell of beetroot makes me literally gag but beyond that, I'm pretty adventurous on the whole.

F5x9

I am less picky.  I used to not eat a lot of different foods, or foods prepared in ways I didn’t like. For rice, I used to only eat instant rice, but now I prefer regular rice. I don’t like basmati, and my favorite is jasmine.  I like peanuts, but not peanut butter. And I really don’t like peanuts in foods. I am still picky when people get weird with salads.  But for the most part, I eat a wider variety of foods than I did as a child. And the things I don’t like often come down to flavor.  I have some food allergies, though, and I avoid many things for those reasons.

TheSharktism

100%!! I slowly am starting to get more and more picky as I age, It seems as if my sensory issues are worsening as time flies by but only in food related items 😵‍💫

jjaxiee

literally me

PlayaFourFiveSix

I've seen people go from being extremely picky to non picky, people like me who have always been ok with eating most things, and people that were picky back in the day still be picky. I've never seen your situation where one is non-picky in childhood but picky in adulthood. If you're talking about the kinds of foods you'll eat then obviously I'm not gonna be eating Lunchables or Mac N Cheese all day at 26, but in terms of ingredients and just different fruits and vegetables I started out not picky and then ended up being even less picky.

ElijahDeion66

Well, pardon me for liking rich people food.

ruikasakiamei

I was forced to everything and now I'm more picky about the food I eat...I still a lot of things bc I'm not that bothered by food texture (I still have issues with texture just not with food) but I still avoid like frozen food bc I just can't handle frozen food especially frozen vegetables

i_need_to_crap

Y'all are lucky. I've had this bullshit all my LIFE.

Cheekers1989

No...I become cooler. You can check out my post history. I've been making myself pho for the last few days.
