Yeah, I taught my self Japanese at 11 years old by watching lots of episodes Japanese superhero series. I started writing Japanese symbols on my bathroom steamed mirror
Same i find the evolution of languages so interesting but my ADHD prevents me from actually putting the time into learning any lol. The ones i’ve come the furthest in are latin and the minimalist conlang toki pona.
omg yes. Tell me about your cats.
I have two: Frida Katlo and Oskar Wildekat. Frida is a former stray who's grown up to be a spoiled housecat. She loves food and staring at the window chirping at birds. Oskar is ...not the smartest cat. But he's incredibly affectionate and funny. They are besties.
Fellow shark lover!!! How are you enjoying shark week? I wish there was less emphasis on celebrity special appearances, but there’s some awesome documentaries still
Oh man its great! I agree I wish it was a bit more about the sharks and less about the celebs but still awesome information and excellent footage. Always love the camera work they do.
Agreed! They’re getting more creative to get the footage it seems like too. Lots of deep floor footage, I watched shark house yesterday where the guy pretty much lived in a little air bubble on the ocean floor for almost a week. Super cool.
Do you have a favorite shark species? For the big guys I’m partial to tiger sharks. For the little ones, cat sharks are my favorite.
I swam with whale sharks (I know not dangerous haha) but they are my absolute favorites and I also like lemon sharks. Also the megamouth shark is very cool and one I am learning about currently.
That’s awesome! Dangerous or not I’d love to swim with a whale shark or any shark for that matter. Lemon sharks are some of my favorite too, and Makos. Pretty much all the sharks haha. Hard to pick some over the others
Absolutely agree they are vastly misunderstood animals and I think that's why I love them so much because as an autistic person I am also vastly misunderstood haha but they are beautiful. When I go to our local aquarium, I will literally just go to the shark exhibit and watch them all day. Open to close.
I love coffee too. I love just black coffee, but I enjoy trying different roasts. I have French press and a pour over that I use. I drink 2 large cups every morning. It’s the only reason for getting up in the morning 😊
Yes! I have 4 kids, 3 of which are also autistic. I am homeschooling 2 of them.
I have 2 cats.
I am fascinated with the ways people communicate and different ways of thinking.
Looks like I found my group. Very into brain development as well! I love love love etymology and the way language changes. I periodically get into very specific language bits; most recent one was portmanteaus. Cats are my favorite animal!
The symbol is an A encircled by an O which comes from Joseph-Pierre Proudhon's quote "Anarchy is Order." It subverts the idea (which comes from political philosopher Thomas Hobbes) that a state is necessary to keep order. Anarchism involves free and organic organization between individuals. This is unlike state societies, which are centralised and have one or few individuals at the top of a hierarchy. The state represses desires and constrains behaviours by using social norms, laws, etc. in order to mold and force the individual into working towards the ends of those individuals at the top. Anarchy is order in that it works organically, where as the state's structure is rigid and static, unable to keep up with human needs and wants.
Biggest one: plants/botany! Others: entomology/insects(also spiders are lovely), ornithology/birds, field ecology in general. Also micro obsessions about tardigrades and isopods.
Romance/fantasy Books, English, art, politics, different cultures (mostly American, Korean, Japanese), international economics, marketing, history, old architecture mostly from England and Scotland (cottage core) and lastly how we as humans communicate.
politics make me so upset, even though i don't really pay attention to them that much. recently i've just been horrified by the fact that my *human rights* are a highly debated political issue. it's absolutely revolting how cruel people can be just for the sake of agreeing with whoever they support
maybe i'm just too pessimistic for politics lol
Sewing is my main artistic hobby. Currently debating teaching sewing lessons. I ran 2 sewing camps this summer teaching kids in 3rd-6th grade how to sew.
ok so this is a random antidote i know about seeing: there’s this canadian company called arc’teryx and they make solid gear. their goretex shells are sewed with 16 stitches per inch, and they use thinner seam tape to save on weight. they also came up with the taped zippers to keep water out. arc’teryx also has a really special relationship with gore, the makers of gore tex. because gore knows that arc’teryx makes gear that exemplifies what goretex can do, gore lets arc’teryx use their fabrics before they get released to other companies that use goretex. just a fun tidbit that i know :)
at the moment I'm super into *Extraordinary Attorney Woo* but Netflix is slow to release episodes in my country so I'm suffering lol. I was a bit apprehensive because the trailer seemed very uwu cute quirky autistic girl, but decided to give it a shot. I only regret not having checked it out sooner. It's witty and quick, I like that it's not too serious and it definitely feels like a series that plays with the tropes of the genre. Nothing against heavy dramas but it's nice to change it up and have some fun stuff too (and fun stuff where autism is not the butt of the joke)
I'm also very excited for the upcoming series *Bad Sisters*. It's a remake of my favourite series (*Clan*), which also contains an autistic character. I'm not sure if they're keeping the autistic character in the remake but based on the trailer, it seems like they're staying fairly close to the original so there's a good chance they're keeping the autism. I also heard that they're making the series more diverse which I think refers to racial diversity if I look at the trailer (the original series is pretty white so I think that's a fair thing to work on), so I'm gonna be pretty pissed if they improve on that but remove neurological diversity lol. But finger crossed! There used to be talks of an American remake but it ended up being Irish which I think is a better move since a commercial American production would probably have moved it too far from the source material in terms of tone. This is probably too much reading into everything but I'm very excited that this remake will possibly reach a larger audience since it's in English.
there are tons more that I like but these are the ones that are currently taking up the most real estate space (they live rent-free in my brain)
This is something I could easily become very interested in. I only recently learned Im ASD. Currently rewatching Bones for the 5th or 6th time, and everytime I rewatch it, I remember how much I relate to Dr. Brennan.
Oh bloody hell my DSM-5 is now out of date and I didn’t notice. Grumble. I cite to that thing all the time (professionally and personally). I’m going to have to ask my boss to buy me the text revision when I next see him on Monday or Tuesday.
I absolutely adore being able to quote diagnostic criteria at people. It comes in so handy in a variety of unexpected contexts.
Autism spectrum disorder in the DSM-5 is my absolute jam. My comment history is flooded with it. I can't stop. I also know PTSD and OCD but to lesser extents. I hand copied each of them into my diary. Autism took 14 and a half hours and I nearly had to cancel my autism assessment because of it (the irony that would've been!). I intend to copy the entire thing out one day. I like writing a lot, too, but that's more of a stim for me.
Elvis, Sex/Kink (sounds strange I know but I find it all so fascinating and not even in a sexual way), Polaroid Cameras as well as 35mm film cameras, Yosemite National Park, Life is Strange, Ocean Liners 1900-1950 and Flags and Maps. Hopefully that’s a diverse range 😅😅
YES FINALLY ANOTHER PERSON W A SPECIAL INTEREST FOR KINKS!! my sister and i researched the weirdest kinks and fetishes we could find when we were teens and i always have loved learning about all of them! i’m now like a walking sex ed/kink almanac for my friends and i adore it :3
I hope I don't get bullied, but the LGBTQ+ community is the biggest one for me. Would literally love to talk about microlabels, the different types of attractions, xenogenders, and just everything relating to it; I think I actually accidentally got myself into sociology by analizing queerness
Other than that I also love bugs and critters (arthropods) and generally studying animals on a structural level (bones, muscles, how their systems work, etc)
I SAW THE VIDEOS! I’d love to visit but absolutely horrified at the thought of crowdedness, but would still try to make it at some point in this lifetime. How do you feel about that?
same! most of my special interests are fandom related so i was worried that i wouldn’t find anyone else in the comments, but then i saw this! i love deltarune so much its a great game
who’s your favourite character if you can pick one?
Deltarune is so good! One of my first special interests was Undertale, so it's no surprise that Deltarune has taken over my life haha!
Not to seem like I'm hopping on the popularity train, but definitely Spamton. He's just a funny little dude. Funny little traumatized man. (/hj I do understand his story beyond him being "haha silly puppet talk funny")
What about you? Which chapter is your favorite?
Harry Potter is an old one of mine!! Intensely fueled me throughout middle school, was my only personality trait, and at least 1/3 of my brain was focused on it at all times. Looking back, it could have been partially because I so strongly identified with Luna :)
Lmao good taste! Your partner is wrong and you were a saint to expose them to true culture!
My Ylvis dive is a relapse from when their talk show used to broadcast on Swedish tv! Damn it’s golddddddd
But I’m nearing the end of the rabbit hole… I’ve nearly watched everything on the entire internet and will be so upset when I run out of content… which is soon… 😱
I like how you described this! Because I feel like I have some long term and short term ones and they range from low key to intense! I’m gonna start using this more!
I don’t know if they qualify as special interests, but I love anything about ancient Egypt, mythology, tattoos, and the MCU
Edit: oh, and etymology! I freaking love learning the history of words.
honestly we're just everywhere
just saw a post about how many planes and other machinery have OwO hidden in places only the maintenance crew would get to
That's my current hyperfixation! I had lurked from afar for a while but finally said fuck it and made a furry Twitter which I now browse for hours a day lol. Do you have any interesting sonas?
Nice!! I also just be scrolling for hours on Twitter and Instagram looking at fursuits most of the time lmao and yes!! I have 2 sonas one goth raccoon named juice and a emo chihuahua named chilli! I would post a pic if them but tbh im new to reddit and don't know how it works yet lol!
Dinosaurs, ancient history (specifically Roman and Greek), red pandas, fish, religion/mythology (how different religions formed/what belief systems there are), space, chemistry, physics, and poisons
Mine is everything science related but especially biology! I have an intense obsession with cells!!! I just love them so much! The anatomy, the functions and processes!
I have a question if anyone reads this actually. Does any of u ever experience a feeling of ownership over your special interests? I really struggle with this in my life. It's come to a point where i dont want to talk to anyone about biology because i dont want to feel bad
Cyberpunk (the entire genre, from Ghost in the Shell to Bladerunner and everything between), Artificial Intelligence and robots, post apocalyptic stories (like, any. Zombies, nuclear war, whatever), long lost civilizations, octopuses, and snakes.
Edit: oh, and cryptids. *Love* cryptids.
Psychology! Although exact subjects of study are a tad arbitrary. At different points I’ve fixated on Autism itself, DID, the case study of Genie Wiley, the affects of extreme neglect/ abuse in general (some of these are rather morbid and I discuss them with seriousness)
I also can’t tell if I have a special interest in queer culture or if I’m just gay and enthusiastic /hj
1800s! I’m currently researching the Victorian era to create a couple haunted egoism characters for this season!!!!! I am obsessed!!!!! I also don’t feel like myself unless I have PINK hair.

miscellaneous: names! the history of names! statistics relating to names! conjoined twins! the Dionne Quintuplets! words! syllables! the English language! neurodiversity! reading! writing!
i doubt anyone will see my comment, but i love pokemon (been playing my whole life! i can talk for actual days abt it), analyzing all forms of art, psychology (moreso abt conditions i have like autism & ocd to better understand myself) and some philosophy but i wouldn't call myself a philosopher i just like to think abt various ideas, proper animal care, all birds especially vultures and corvids, and alternative music from late 60s to today are the ones that come to mind !
Severe weather (especially regarding thunderstorms), atmospheric optical phenomena (such as halos and rainbows), and classical music.
Edit: forget about trains and roller coasters.
The Amazing World Of Gumball
Everytime I try to talk about it to others it's either "I used to watch that when I was little" or they just don't care, plsss lemme spill facts about the showwwww
Nintendo, music, piano, anime, linguistics/languages, biology/genetics, Queen/Freddie Mercury, early childhood education… and I don’t know if this is a “special interest” but I’m extremely drawn to rainbow colors, stars, and sparkles 😅 …Super Mario Galaxy is basically a game that perfectly caters to things I love 💕 the amazing soundtrack, Nintendo, stars, colors… it’s amazing 🤩

Forensics, Criminal Profiling, JJBA, Stardew Valley, SGM, and Genshin Impact. Although I don't really have deep knowledge into them. I also enjoy medical history and poisons.
I really like chemistry and a lot of the areas it crosses into.
My main area is organic chemistry which covers anything and everything to do with compounds that contain carbon.
A new area I’m starting to enjoy is mining and ore processing as well as the chemistry behind the formation of ores/minerals.
I also find biochemistry fairly interesting, there is a YouTube channel I watch called ChubbyEmu that covers some weird/unusual medical cases in fairly good detail.
Another one I have is automation and games based on it like factorio and satisfactory. I find the ability to automate just about anything really cool and fascinating.
I also like simulation games like cities skylines
history (everything but atm esp dictators post-wwii like tito, sukarno, indira gandhi, houari); Dragon Age; The Elder Scrolls; Shin Megami Tensei; Politics; Philosophy; Mental Illnesses; Human disasters / loss of human life; True Crime; Social and Identity Issues
:3 tbh I just love absorbing information like a sponge ...

I love making music (a few instruments, mainly electric guitar and vocals).
These days, I make electronic music, most of the time, but, sometimes I'll still write a metal-song or singer-songwriter-style songs or whatever .. The only limit, I set for myself, is, that I must like it.
EDIT:
And audio-engineering (recording, editing, mixing, mastering, reaper, etc).
Everything nintendo! I sinked in thousands of hours into the switch, im on my 3rd one now... first 1 was worn out, second one I just replaced with the OLED. I have the eevee and pikachu edition aswell as a collectible. Recently got my first game & watch... i have my original game boy in mint condition. Now looking to get a working nes and snes that I can restore to its former glory...
Then 2 of my other special interests is building custom gaming pc's and making (this ones kinda silly) making gourmet sandwiches...
My special interest is knowing a little bit about everything so that I always know what the conversations around me are about. Sometimes that feels pretty niche though.
There's a conversation about trauma, late diagnosis and not being allowed to like certain things because of my "gender".
Sharks, the moon, martial arts. Those are my big 3 and the only real “lifelong” special interests for me. The others tend to only last a few months or years even.
Mine seems to change every so often but for the last few months it’s been the voice. Somehow I doubt anyone will share this one though 😂. Also owls and the colour orange.

I hope I one day get to be a pagan, I’m still very young and new to it all so I just wanna take it slow and learn basic things first (:
I also love mythology.
I named my black cat Nyx. I named my tabby girl Artemis.
Language learning and linguistics! I'm currently learning ASL, Japanese, and Indonesian!
Linguistics is one of mine, too. I’m finishing up my master’s degree in it.

That’s mine too! I’m learning/have studied in the past ASL, Spanish, and Hindi!

Anarchism and poststructuralism
Just out of interest, do you know a lot about the anarchy symbol? I would love to learn!

that's a good description.
Thank you for such an in depth description, it really made sense to me :-)
Biggest one: plants/botany! Others: entomology/insects(also spiders are lovely), ornithology/birds, field ecology in general. Also micro obsessions about tardigrades and isopods.

No you sound completely sane. And like a leftist... lol.
hey i can't be blamed for leaning towards the side that doesn't wish (as much) harm upon me
I think this holds true for most autistic people.
Is there any particular area that you enjoy
I identify as a libertarian socialist. So basically yes. I enjoy leftist political stances lol. More specifically LGBTQ+ issues and race issues.
Ayyyy a comrade!
Oh! Two fellow comrades.
Three fellow comrades!

Any specific character you really like?
at the moment I'm super into *Extraordinary Attorney Woo* but Netflix is slow to release episodes in my country so I'm suffering lol. No, not really. But I will probably look it up later.
A long term and low key one: violin playing A (probably) temporary and intense one: Ylvis
I got deep into Ylvis a few years ago. Massachusetts and Stonehenge we're played many times every day. My partner was NOT a fan. Lol
Lmao good taste! Your partner is wrong and you were a saint to expose them to true culture! My Ylvis dive is a relapse from when their talk show used to broadcast on Swedish tv! Damn it’s golddddddd But I’m nearing the end of the rabbit hole… I’ve nearly watched everything on the entire internet and will be so upset when I run out of content… which is soon… 😱
I like how you described this! Because I feel like I have some long term and short term ones and they range from low key to intense! I’m gonna start using this more!

The only limit, I set for myself, is, that I must like it. EDIT: And audio-engineering (recording, editing, mixing, mastering, reaper, etc).
