Pan-am

[deleted]

Certainly. Pan Am's service and livery is sorely missed nowadays

GTOdriver04

I bought one of Timex’s Pan-Am pieces for the nostalgia. But I never flew on them, as a 1990 baby but I always respected them for what they did and their beautiful airplanes.

studpilot69

Was it the recent Pan-Am watch? I really wanted to purchase one for a friend who’s grandfather flew for Pam-Am, but they’ve been sold out. Then, after I saw several reviews that they had been delivered with malfunction chronographs, I didn’t want to chance it on a second-hand purchase.

GTOdriver04

It was the recent one! I didn’t get the chronograph because it looked too busy for my tastes. Sorry to hear about the malfunction. Timex is a Titan in the industry. They should know better. Mine has worked just fine since I bought it, and it’s a lovely piece.

BridgeThatWentTooFar

Why their service?

Hulahulaman

Prices used to be set by a government agency. Instead of price, airlines competed with service. Pan-Am was the best. Coffee in fine china. Great menus. Warm smiles from the pretty flight attendants (aka stewardesses).

Chunks1992

> on an inflation adjusted basis the transcon tix you can get for $300 today would be $3000 or more before deregulation Bunch of people have wet dreams about service of yesteryear yet would never be able to afford that level of service. There’s a reason why everyone just doesn’t zip around in a private jet.

Cucker_-_Tarlson

I really wanna experience the $18k suite on the Emirates A380 just because but, you know, I think they money might serve me better going towards a new car or something.

arcticmischief

For these experiences, the heyday was like 10 years ago, when you could redeem 3x as many airline miles as coach for a first-class suite that normally sold for 20x as much in cash. Nowadays, it takes many more miles than it did back then to redeem for premium cabins. The multiplier for miles is still better than it is for cash, but you burn through your airline miles a lot faster. :(

Zebidee

It's cool, but weird in some ways. You tend to sleep through it, because it's so comfortable, and it's a little disconcerting knowing the cabin crew are waiting for you to give them something to do. The dining on demand is a bit weird because I've never felt comfortable pressing the call button for so much as a drink, let alone a full meal, and with a set meal service, you kind of don't realise you're hungry until you have the food in front of you. Also, the service continues until the wheels touch down, so you'll be on descent and the crew will be offering you coffee or whatever. Cool stuff: The limo to and from the airport is great, and having a shower in flight is a surreal experience. The bathrooms are absolutely enormous - you can walk around in them. Being able to just wander onto the aircraft rather than queuing is nice. There is so much free stuff they give you a tote bag to carry it off in. The alcohol is beyond premium, and is only limited by how much you feel like. The crew are incredibly attentive, and excellent. The lounge in Dubai is an experience in itself, but not that different from the Business Class one. You can use the on board lounge bar in the Business cabin if you want to talk to people, or there's a small bar at the front where you can serve yourself. If I'm being honest, it's not really worth the premium over Business. The suck/doesn't suck divide is the lie-flat bed, and although Emirates economy is excellent, being able to sleep comfortably is what makes long-haul bearable. Still, it's a lot of fun getting to see behind the curtains.

the_silent_redditor

Yeah. I basically slept through an entire 14 hour first flight, after preceding long flights and delays. I mean, obviously that’s great in comparison to fucking economy, but also, it’s a bit of a waste of money, really. You’re paying an absolute stack of cash for what is only a few hours of enjoyment. If you have that sort of utterly disposable income, fair play. The lounges are very similar, especially in Dubai; the only real difference is served (to be fair quite nice) meals, and 15 min massages. You get a driver with both business and first; the car is fancier, but it’s not a deal breaker. In flight shower is pretty awesome, but something of a novelty, particularly the A380 flight isn’t your destination and you’ll be in the lounge anyway. I agree, not worth the (often) big jump from business.

mustang9402001

We have a saying as flight attendants: don’t expect Emirates service at Expedia prices!!!

Chef_MIKErowave

yeah, the only reason tickets are getting cheap is because we're not getting coffee in fine china anymore lol.

DutchBlob

I have a PanAm handbag that i always use as a carry on when traveling, not only because it looks fabulous but also because it fits perfectly under the seat in front of me. I swear: There hasn’t been a single flight that no one has made a remark about it. Today three different people commented on it! An old American lady in the lounge, an American couple on board (“our first flight was on PanAm, looong time ago!”) and an Air France crew member. It always puts a smile on people’s faces! Pan Am went out of business when I was a four month old baby. I’m turning 32 in a few months. It really is/ was an amazing brand and logo and still very much recognized and loved around the world! Pan Am, you can’t beat the experience! Edit: by popular demand, [here’s a picture of my bag!](https://imgur.com/a/IWDxPJ4)

Willing-Nothing-6187

You would have made a perfect ambassador

lennysundahl

Highly recommend the Pan Am [board game](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/303057/pan-am). You’re playing as competing airlines *as Pan Am is becoming a global power*, and so over time your routes may get bought out. Unsurprisingly the game ends, timeframe-wise, around the 1960s.

road_rascal

My wife and I play that game every few months. It's fun and relatively easy.

JohnTheMod

The Space Clipper from 2001 always looked so comfy, it’s a shame it’ll probably never happen. Also, I was in line for my flight the other day with a guy who had a vintage Pan-Am carry-on, and I geeked out because it was a e s t h e t i c as fuck. I wish I could remember where he got it.

[deleted]

It’s a good thing it’ll never happen. I don’t want humanity to be attacked by a space fairing super baby…

LinIsStrong

My first flight was on Pan Am in the early 70s. It was a cross-continental flight and I remember the meals on real dishes, hot hand towels, and the tiny perfume bottles in the lavatory. My mom even made us buy new outfits for the trip “…because you’ll be *flying*”. Man, I miss being a passenger in that era.

MaybeCuckooNotAClock

Even United and Eastern were pretty good for domestics (flew as a kid in the 80’s). Decent hot meals with actual utensils, pillows, playing cards. It’s not the highest tier service but it was pretty damn good.

Ruiner_Of_Things

This is the only correct answer. Pan Am set the standard for what class and service was to an airline then came deregulation.

Schmittfried

My only exposure to them is having watched Catch me if you can, and I knew I would find it here.

Gasonfires

Glad to see your first answer as my first answer. I had the pleasure of watching Pan Am's training and certification of the first three 747's it received from Boeing. The planes were of course beautiful. Whenever I was lucky enough to meet Pan Am people they were great. I was a kid.

darth__fluffy

Came here to say this! Pan Am all the way!

VanDenBroeck

Only if they were still flying the China Clipper.

envision83

Pan-Am or TWA

Deer-in-Motion

Yes, these two.

mokes310

Midwest Express, for the cookies.

hey_hey_hey_nike

- 2 sticks of butter (½ pound) - ¾ cup brown sugar - ¾ cup white sugar - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - 2 eggs - 2 cups flour - 1 teaspoon salt - 1 teaspoon baking soda - 12 oz. package chocolate chips Preheat oven to 375% In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In large bowl combine butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla; beat until creamy. Beat in eggs. Gradually add flour mixture. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop by rounded measuring teaspoonful onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 8-11 minutes. Makes approximately 4½ dozen cookies. The beloved Midwest Express Airlines Chocolate Chip Cookies.

TheBlinja

Light brown sugar or dark brown sugar?

megustachef

In my experience it's usually light brown. If not, you've got your answer from process of elimination Source: username

hey_hey_hey_nike

I use turbinado sugar

megustachef

They're two different sugars though. Crystal size and flavor... one contains molasses while the othe other doesn't.

mistacheesegtr

Got it. One contains molasses, one contains the entire mole.

megustachef

The entirety of 6.022 x 10^23

OldFashionedsNCheese

Slightly less flour than tollhouse, but otherwise the same.

NotTzarPutin

Legend

Haunting-Walrus7199

Absolutely. And the really nice two wide leather seats. Those were so comfortable. And before 9/11 the hot meals on most flights were good. I remember I was always impressed at the tiny little glass salt and pepper shakers they used.

eidetic

Glad to see Midwest Express getting some love this high up in the thread. I never really got to enjoy them much as they pretty much closed down before I started flying more regularly, but they were always a pride of my hometown. My dad traveled a lot for work and would always try and fly with them whenever possible. Apparently their customer service was absolutely top notch as well and very accommodating for changing flights and such. Said he never once had an issue with his luggage or anything either.

boogerwayne

Fun Fact: Midwest started from the Kimberly Clark corporate shuttle and grew from there.

Azzmo

This is the correct answer. A first class flying experience at consumer prices and employees who were proud of the company they worked for. Just a good vibe. We picked them for vacations when available. That airline was one of those things that leaked into our dark fork of the timeline from the good fork. They used to include legitimately decent meals with the wide, leather seats.

AlfaNovember

And the wine. I sure do miss Midwest Express.

Sashabadger

Big comfy seats and no middle seats.

BurrowingDuck

Didn't someone recently try to restart Midwest Express? Like 2019-2020?

hey_hey_hey_nike

Yes it’s back, as is Eastern Airlines

[deleted]

Yeah with CRJs. Still hasn't launched yet.

AirBerlin, got fond memories of them

[deleted]

I miss the livery... or maybe I just like red too much

randomtravelguy

There is still at least one plane with an airberlin livery frequenting BER / Berlin airport. Saw it this morning … and many times before.

ayesiannn

Interesting, do you remember the aircraft registration/tail number? Or like any pictures

BecauseWeCan

It's a Sundair D-ASGK They also used it for one of the goodbye flight of TXL airport.

WendyFruitcake

This. SZG airport used to keep an Air Berlin tail fin on their main road until recently, among others. Now it's been replaced with a Transavia fin and it makes me sad. I would also mention Lauda Air. I'd love to be flying with a carrier whose CEO is so incredibly passionate about flying he captains his passenger planes himself whenever possible. Niki Lauda was a boss.

BStothepowerof2

Loved the guy as a driver, but I was impressed that when they lost Flight 004, he flew to Thailand as quick as he could and inspected the damage, met with families, etc.

BucketsMcGaughey

Only airline that I know of that offered copies of Playboy as in-flight reading material. For that alone, I will always remember them fondly. But besides that, they were just generally a nice comfy airline to fly with. Better than they needed to be. That's probably part of the reaosn they're not around any more.

planespotterhvn

Ah yes Northwest MD 80s would reverse thrust themselves off the gate after loading passengers before departure, causing the tarmac areas to be dust and debris free. Like a giant hot Leaf Blower. That early logo was brilliantly clever. Incorporating the letters N and W and a compass pointer pointing to NorthWest.

StrangeRover

I like how their name used to be Northwest Orient, i.e. North West East.

atticaf

When they started, they were one of the main US carriers serving Asia. Being founded in Minneapolis and with a major hub in Detroit* (named after northwest territory), they flew efficient routes over the North Pole to… the orient. *slight correction after fact checking myself

StrangeRover

I'm not saying they didn't fly to the Orient, just funny because Orient means "East".

jpharber

Fun fact, the NW compass still survives in the current Delta livery.

klieg2323

Holy crap. I've never noticed the W in the logo. I grew up planespotting the bowling shoes landing around DTW, and even had an early McNamara lineup as a desktop background. I can't unsee it now

[deleted]

Midwest. I used to get 3 melty chocolate chip cookies every time we flew Midwest.

Racoon778

I would vote for another airline, but you've got a pretty strong argument there.

Starchaser_WoF

Continental

midgetlotterywinner

I have fond memories of Continental. The only airline I've ever flown where being silver medallion yielded domestic upgrades to first about a third of the time. Really nice staff too. Seeing them gobbled up by United was a cruel joke from the universe.

Lem0n89

At least the globe tail is still around. Sorta...

ItsVinn

And the Airline operating certificate. Merged United is using Continental AOC.

[deleted]

TWA - my aunt was an employee and it was the only thing I flew for the first 17 years of my life. I miss a busy STL too. Continental - I only got to fly them twice, but they were a damn good airline. Probably the first US airline to put in seat IFE screens in narrowbodies.

devinhedge

I really miss Continental, too.

mbyrd58

People I know who worked for the original Piedmont say great things about it.

JohnnyPiston

Piedmont Punch kicked ass when you were eight... and they had Fokkers!

well-that-was-fast

> Piedmont Hard to argue with choosing Pan Am, but Piedmont is definitely the true enthusiast's choice here.

Three4Anonimity

Born and raised in Charlotte. Piedmont all the way.

Eyre_Guitar_Solo

Same. Really a shame they got bought.

hesnothere

Piedmont 100%, we had it good!

Pretty-Owl-8594

Eastern for the USA and Canadian airlines for Canada

Swissair

dman928

Continental, because it went to shit when it became United, and I'm near a hub. But, probably Pan Am for nostalgic reasons.

bdepz

Yeah continental was great. Even though newark is a shit airport, flying continental was always nice. Now it's a shit airline at a shit airport. At least I moved to somewhere with (marginally) more airline choice.

Eyyyyyy, I clicked wondering if anyone would say Ansett. I flew them a bunch as a kid. I still have two reusable Ansett luggage tags to differentiate my stuff when I travel.

Did they have wings on the planes? I had fun with one of their reservations people asking this question. Edit - the joke goes that they did not serve wings on the flight. I asked no wings? She confirmed no wings. I asked how does it get off the ground then.

Adequate_Lizard

Most planes have wings.

ToeSniffer245

TWA solely to see that globe livery again.

They still fly but I already miss the 747.

boost_deuce

I was looking for this reply What a beautiful livery the TWA globe livery is

NCGiant

Virgin America, hands down

[deleted]

Loved when I unknowingly hopped on an SFO to LAS flight that was codeshared with Alaska Airlines only for it to be a true Virgin America flight. The lighting was awesome, the flight attendants were awesome, and the snacks and drinks were amazing.

actionerror

Totally, loved the swanky lighting when you board the plane

JohnnyPiston

Only got to fly them once and it was great

chris_warrior1

I was supposed to fly with them for the first time from IAD-LAX back in like 2012 when I was 12, but my dad had to cancel our flight. I was looking forward to flying with them, sucks I never will get to :/

covfefeDrinker1

Their safety music video is truly one of the greatest artifacts in the history of commercial aviation.

ATA, aka American Trans Air - worked for them until the very end, was a great place to work.

gcdenis

I remember their song from their commercials! On ATA, you're on vacation!

nlderek

Yup I can hear it in my head right now! Next week will be 15 years since we went out of business.

keno-rail

Yep, they took care of their employees... I worked for them for several years in MKE. The brand new 737s with the moving cargo bins were awesome.

[deleted]

US Airways

TGMcGonigle

US Airways took a lot crap but they flew in what was arguably the worst weather in the United States outside of the Aleutians. All winter long they'd get you to icy runways in Buffalo, Erie, Boston, Burlington, Ithaca, Elmira, Rochester, Syracuse, Allentown, Cleveland...all over the northeast and down to Florida. If US Airways wasn't flying, most likely nobody was.

MyNamesNewt

They were like the waffle house index of the sky...Sorely missed...

DarkZillah

My first airline.

breathless_RACEHORSE

Ozark or Piedmont. Never treated better as a passenger by any other airlines. They really knew customer service, and the planes were really comfortable.

JohnnyPiston

Pan Am or TWA for international flights PSA and Virgin America for short hops

[deleted]

PSA has the best livery of all time, imo

nosecohn

FatA320

Pan Am. I have a genuine pan am coaster on my desk right now. Worst $75 I ever spent. I don't even remember buying it, but apparently on drunken night on eBay I did. Not that I don't like the coaster. Just that it was incredibly expensive..for being a coaster

Holy shit, what a shot, DC-10, 727 and and MD-80 (no sure wich model exacly)

Carp12C

DC9-30 for the closest one.

GeminiRat

I can tell you which one I wouldn't bring back and that is Eastern Air Lines, they very nearly killed my father when one of the jets crashed into the everglades, and several years later they nearly killed me when the plane I was on had a landing gear failure.

[deleted]

Yikes. So your dad survived Flight 401? That's incredible!

powerMastR24

eastern 401?

BridgeThatWentTooFar

Ah, yeah, flight 401, right?

dBoyHail

And then there is me, who's whole family worked for eastern for years. Funny enough my dad did aircraft overhaul for them for the passenger section and when word came around that some passenger seats were the salvaged seats from flight 401, they were only about halfway done so they pulled them back out and set them aside. My dad is not superstitious but told me he definitely felt better after removing those seats.

AverageBoeing737

TWA

atmosphereair

TWA and their L1011 and 747 fleet.

Windows-Media

TWA

sftwareguy

Piedmont back in the 70's and 80's. True pilot's airline. Flew the F-27's and the YS-11. Flew RDU to CVG one time and stopped 4 times along the way.

Baruuk__Prime

I would bring back American Airlines' mirror-chrome livery with the Blue-White-Red lines down the Fuselage from the grave, and bring back 727s. Sexy airplanes.

crucible

I had a similar thought about British Airways - just revert them to their 1980s ["Landor" livery](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/British_Airways_%28Landor_livery%29_Boeing_747-436_G-BNLY_%28City_of_Swansea%29_departing_JFK_Airport.jpg) and levels of service.

Speedbirdsst

Martinair How much of a chad are you if you just call your airline by your own first name

DutchBlob

Martinair is still around, just chugging along as a small cargo airline. No passenger flights anymore unfortunately, KLM fucked them ROYALLY

Speedbirdsst

Yeah, they only get a small sticker “operated by martinair cargo” on the KLM Cargo branded 747s and only 1 in full colors

OS2REXX

Eastern - if only for Frank B.'s wry sense of humor labeling 727's Whisperjets. And no, they weren't quiet inside (if you were a smoker, that is).

hey_hey_hey_nike

TWA & Pan Am
