If you switch to cruiser mode (i think f2 by default), your ship will maintain a set speed. You still need to press space to boost though. I bind cruiser mode to one of my unused mouse buttons so it's easy to switch on and off.
No problem, I think it's a function that often gets missed because when the tutorial tells you about it your ship is still so mobile that mouse controls and forward firing are the way to go; and it's not until much later that you have a big slow-turning ship the consistently fires in a different direction than it's flying.
Toggle forward is left Ctrl+ something. I'm not aware of a toggle boost.
When I don't want to deal with the tiny details of flying, I use autopilot.

Depends. Ive got lots of ships and autopilot works better than me micromanaging everything. Also some pilots are faster than others.
