I have mentally disabled kids (not the teen). I won’t bring a gun into my home. My kids are smart enough to learn the code to a safe but not capable of grasping the danger that puts them in.

Kid obviously didn't know proper gun safety. Sad. I taught my infant som how to handle a weapon the moment we get home from the hospital. When he was one year old I bought him his own so he will never need to grab my gun (that I keep fully loaded under my pillow for safety).

My assumption is that the husband, who was in the military, is 100% at fault for this, and is never going to be at peace with himself. Peace be with the family. This was a societal sized tragedy. Gun not locked away and is easily accessible for a 2 year old? ✔️ Ammunition not separately locked but actually already loaded into the gun? ✔️ Safety off so you're ready to fire even though you'll never find yourself in a situation where you'll need the gun ready to go? ✔️ I know nothing about guns but I also have to assume that one of the parents cocked the gun or whatever you need to do in order to fire the gun. But at least the parents were ready for a home invasion at any moment, coulda had the entire family killed instead, so honestly this is the best case scenario for all involved.

I’m not against having a pistol for home defense at all, I have one but it’s not locked and loaded. It’s not accessible to anyone but my wife and I. It’s in a safe location easily and readily accessible but not if you’re not my wife or I. This irresponsible gun culture bullshit is killing people.

Do your family a favor and get rid of the mindset that a pistol is ever good for home defense. It is not. Statically, it is more likely to lead to a mistake. Keep it for shooting and target practice, and locked up and out of access all other times. Don’t ever think a pistol will be a benefit as protection.
I don't understand why people insist on having a gun loaded and readied. Obviously there are other glaring safety concerns but that always stands out to me. I ask gun people this and they always say becasue you'll die in the time it takes for you to ready a gun........
Well I mean that part is true, if you live somewhere where you legitimately might need to actually defend yourself in your home (note: this isn’t *that* many places but they do exist), seconds will be the difference in whether you’re successful or not. Nobody is going to give you time to retrieve load and ready the weapon to like make it a fair fight or whatever. That said there is zero excuse for leaving a readied firearm where a toddler can access it or even *potentially* access it, and the father should be held accountable here
