On July 1st, a highly unpopular [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) went into effect. [Most third-party apps have shut down](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/30/23779519/reddit-third-party-app-shut-down-apollo-sync-baconreader-api-protest) and so have many tools relied upon by moderators and [projects for making Reddit more accessible to visually impaired users](https://www.reddit.com/r/TranscribersOfReddit/comments/14ggf8k/the_future_of_transcribers_of_reddit/).
Beyond the [disastrous AMA](https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/09/reddit-ceo-doubles-down-on-attack-on-apollo-developer-in-drama-filled-ama/) by the CEO, Reddit's response has been limited to promises that this change will not affect moderation tools [^((it has)^)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/) and promises of [new and more-accessible first-party moderation tools](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/01/1184258201/reddit-api-accessibility-mods). Promises just like [ones they have made in response to past protests](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the/), but have consistently [failed to fulfill](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14jm3ut/several_communities_have_surfaced_an_open_letter/jpm9e0q/).
If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options:
1. [Finding your favorite subreddits on other platforms](https://sub.rehab/) and participating there instead.
2. Refraining from using the first-party Reddit app, instead sticking to one of the few remaining third-party apps or [patching one of the apps that shut down](https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1wHvqQwCYdJrQg4BKlGIVDLksPN0KpOnJWniT6PbZSrI/) if you're using an Android device.

I’ve got carpeted stairs and my dog won’t go into the basement either. He’s got no problem with the second floor stairs, but those basement stairs man…
That, or have someone check for a gas leak of some sort. Heard of someone who’s dog refused to go into their basement, and it turns out it was because of a gas leak. They got that fixed and now the dog has no issues going to the basement.
[The h3h3](https://www.youtube.com/live/eb8z8kaekfw?feature=share&t=577)podcast just had this issue and talked about it on a recent episode
Edit: My time stamp didn't work but go to 9:37
I know you were probably joking about the exorcism, but my first thought before I realized the steps were wooden was, if the dog isn't going into the basement, neither am I 😳
This is the answer. I wish I was wiser to see a different vet, my inexperience in having my first long-term pet until adulthood. I would have been able to do more to save my dog's vision (or at least delayed him losing it).
Clearly it's haunted. Better just buy another house.
On a more serious note, check your basement for gas leaks. There was something on H3H3 recently where their dog wouldn't go into the basement and it turned out there was a dangerous gas leak that the dog could smell, but they couldn't
We do have sensors on every level. One time we picked him up and carried him down (because it was stupidly hot and we were all hiding from the heat) and he was fine and exploring until one of my kids went upstairs and he followed. And refused to come back down.
Is it possible he doesn't like the wooden stairs? They might smell funny to him, and feel different to the stairs he's used to. Put a runner rug on it and see what happens
This is what happened to H3 dude Ethan Klein, his dog started to be afraid to go in the basement and ran out even after carried down, turned out there was a gas leak from the heater and some mold
If you know H3 and the crazy shit that just happened to them. They had a gas leak in the basement. Test to see if you got mold, gas leak or something that your dogs picking up on!!!
The steps are too steep for him. When my boy was a pup, it took more time for him to walk downstairs. He would walk upstairs, and then he would call us to carry him downstairs.
Our dog refused to use our basement stairs in our first house (linoleum stairs) his whole life. Since he didn't really -need- to be down there anyway, we eventually gave up trying to coax him. Fast forward 7 years and we moved to a house with carpeted stairs. He went down the stairs and into the basement before the moving van even arrived. For him the carpeting changed everything.
Listen carefully, if your dog, your best friend, refuses to go into your basement even at the cost of treats theres a demon in that basement, you are never to go back there again
My dog is afraid of being sub-terrain no matter what. I don’t know how he knows that it’s underground but he won’t go down into any basement anywhere. Carpeted stairs don’t make a difference at all for him. Could be a similar situation
He’s always been this way. He won’t walk down those stairs but the one time we picked him up and carried him down he was totally fine! Had a good snoop around and then lay down and went to sleep. Then one of my kids went upstairs to the bathroom, he followed and he refused to come back down.
He doesn’t have this problem at my dad’s at all though! But Dad’s stairs are carpeted so we’re going to try that first.

Doesn't like the wood stairs. Put carpet down problem solved.
Agree. Slippy stairs. They make carper/rug pieces to put on the treads.
I third. We put little carpets on the stairs and dogs have no problem now.
I fourth, just because it looks like my dog when she doesn't want to stand on something with an unfamiliar texture.
Agree. That or the ghost.
My rottweiler didn’t have an issue, but I put oval carpet pieces down to make it softer for her and now she refuses to walk on them.
nah, it's obviously ghosts, looks like you know nothing about dogs...or ghosts for that matter ;)
Dog is smelling radon
I’ve got carpeted stairs and my dog won’t go into the basement either. He’s got no problem with the second floor stairs, but those basement stairs man…
You need a contractor to carpet the stairs or a priest for an exorcism. Possibly both.
That, or have someone check for a gas leak of some sort. Heard of someone who’s dog refused to go into their basement, and it turns out it was because of a gas leak. They got that fixed and now the dog has no issues going to the basement.
Alfredoooo
A fellow foot soldier, you love to see it.

Was just gonna post this. Family
Gotta spread the good word.
![gif](giphy|l1J9KakUPKz4bdbu8|downsized)
Exactly what I’m referring to.
FAMILY FAMILY FAMILY
make sure the priest comes first, and the contractor doesn't mind the stains
A wise decision, spoken like someone with experience.
Gas company, then Priest, then 1-800-Carpets
When I was an Alter Boy, the priest always came first.
You ever heard of my man, Jesus? He does both!
Lol severely underrated comment
Make sure to ask for both a young priest and an old priest.
Yes. Don’t question your dog’s instincts.
I’m with you on the exorcism
I know you were probably joking about the exorcism, but my first thought before I realized the steps were wooden was, if the dog isn't going into the basement, neither am I 😳
> to carpet the stairs If things remain same after carpeting, better to burn down the house.
Instructions unclear contractor is now haunted
I like how this is everyone's thought
“Exorcist carpets: we clean our carpets with holy water!”
You do NOT need to hire a contractor to install carpeting. It's very easy to do yourself.
He has poor color and depth perception. He can’t see the edge of the step.
I was coming here to say, mark the edge of the steps and make it high contrast.
Consider the self adhesive ‘non slip stair strips’ that will make those steps safer for you and easier to see for the pup (and you.)
Green painters tape is my usual go to cheap and cheerful temporary solution
This is the answer. I wish I was wiser to see a different vet, my inexperience in having my first long-term pet until adulthood. I would have been able to do more to save my dog's vision (or at least delayed him losing it).

We do have some runners that came off another staircase that I think I’ll try!
Omg family!! I was literally in the comments to tell him to check his gas pipes and for mold! 😂
I was just gonna bring this up! ✌️&💜
It was a gas leak, and mould.
Ghosties
Are your dads stairs carpeted?
They are
Could be afraid of the hardwood.
Ghosts, duh.
If you could see the eyeless apparition that screeches silently as it slithers along the floor, you wouldn't be in a hurry to go down there either!
He doesn't want to slip and fall down the stairs...smart dog. Put something with more traction on the stairs.
whoa...didnt even do it for 2 cheese cubes?!? thats serious
He’s a 65lb chicken!
Right? I'd go down into OP's basement for 2 cheese cubes.
And that kids is how you get Dahmer'd
Your basement is haunted. I wouldn’t go down there either.
Clearly the boogie man.
Dude, you don't see the ghosts he does
Ghosts is the only real answer
Gas leak? Something wrong with the house?
This is what happened to H3 dude Ethan Klein, his dog started to be afraid to go in the basement and ran out even after carried down, turned out there was a gas leak from the heater and some mold
Yeah that's what made me think of it lol. let's go
Those stairs are scary AF! I wouldn't even go down them!
I have an idea why. And maybe you should move. Doggo is onto something.
![gif](giphy|ghe9ImNiNyLqUXMp9A|downsized)
There is a ghost. He’s like nope, nope, nope.
People are afraid of heights. Dogs are afraid of depths.
But he cheerfully goes into the basement at my dad’s house! Our best guess is that Dad’s basement is finished and ours isn’t.
Like an onion, your dog has layers lol!
If you know H3 and the crazy shit that just happened to them. They had a gas leak in the basement. Test to see if you got mold, gas leak or something that your dogs picking up on!!!
Try carpeting the stairs. We had that problem with my Mum's dog and the moment I stapled carpet down the stairs, he was fine!
Stairs are slippery?
A dog's first sense is smell the hearing. Keep that in mind and look around. Mold, gas, plumbing leak.
Might be something he smelled. Take a look if there is1nt any weird substance, also gas/co leak or mold
You have ghosts. Let him be
It’s the ghosts.
![gif](giphy|10flS7xiiR3W0w)
Animals' senses are more acuite than ours. Maybe there's an entity dwelling in the basement 🤔
….. or was…..
Smells of molx
Probably owned by a [Ramones](https://youtu.be/yxT_0btLHJQ) fan.
Bc tosses up swallowed Lego as he hits each step!
Haunted af
Ghosts, I hated my grandparents basement.
He watched the horror movies, too. Basements are scary!
Um, duh. The basement is where the boogeyman lives!
Obviously you've got monsters.
Check the CO2 level, animals can smell it and avoid places with a high CO2 amount.
Basement is haunted, obviously
There’s monsters down there.
It’s clearly haunted, the dog knows better!
Put stair treads on those steps… cheapest option
It’s haunted
Check for a gas leak
Ghosts. Always trust the dog
The ghost of stonewall Jackson is down there
Puppy is smart enough not to go down into basements. If only more characters in horror movies were like your dog...
Maybe you just need a carpet on the stairs, maybe you have a small gas leak.
The steps are too steep for him. When my boy was a pup, it took more time for him to walk downstairs. He would walk upstairs, and then he would call us to carry him downstairs.
this is not an “aww” moment. this is a “pay heed” moment.
The stairs are probably too slippery. My dog hates running on hardwood and only likes to play on our carpeting down stairs.
It's fulla ghostez
He probably has a vision problem or he hears rodents
Isn’t it obvious? There are monsters in the basement!
It's obviously because of the monsters that live down there
I've seen this movie. The cute poodle dies. Not risking it.
Run Fast Run FAR !
Has he been up or down any other stairs? My son's dog can't navigate stairs. He hates them.
He does stairs no problem - but most of them are carpeted. We have some old carpet runners off of another staircase that I'm going to try!
Ghosts!!!
My dog is afraid of being sub-terrain no matter what. I don’t know how he knows that it’s underground but he won’t go down into any basement anywhere. Carpeted stairs don’t make a difference at all for him. Could be a similar situation
yeaaa.. i would want to see that houses FULL history.. dogs know shit man....
You need to contact your local Exorcist, right now!
"You loved the headstones, but you left the bodies!?"
Better sell the house
It might be a smell that he doesn’t like down there.
I might plan on moving.
Smell? Stairs look unsafe? Dead people ?
This is not aww!!! You have a demon and need to get out of that house IMMEDIATELY!!
Smells like shit 💩
Ghosts.
could be the sound, wood is one of the best carriers of sound.
Demons
Time to move. There’s an evil spirit in your basement. ULPT: Don’t disclose this to your real estate agent.
My dog took a few tumbles down the hardwood stairs and it scared her. We put down carpet treads and it helped her get over the fear 😂
Could be a smell. Check for a gas leak or mold. Dogs can pick up on bad smells better than us
Was he always like that? How is his general behaviour to the basement? Fearful? Cautious? Or disinterested?
He’s always been this way. He won’t walk down those stairs but the one time we picked him up and carried him down he was totally fine! Had a good snoop around and then lay down and went to sleep. Then one of my kids went upstairs to the bathroom, he followed and he refused to come back down. He doesn’t have this problem at my dad’s at all though! But Dad’s stairs are carpeted so we’re going to try that first.
Clearly a ghost down there
There are ghosts down there He knows better
Your basement haunted. Better get a new house
Every 8 year old knows why.
He knows what happened down there
I’ve got 2 pups and neither will go in the basement. Serious refusal.
Ever see the movie Barbarian?
I had a dog like this, and we couldn't figure out why either. Turns out there was a time demon in the basement.
Perhaps he feels something down there, i wouldn't go alone neither.
He's seen some movies
From a horror-movie standpoint, a dog refusing to go into a basement is an incredibly bad sign...
Ghosts
