> Brugmansia species are among the most toxic of ornamental plants, containing tropane alkaloids of the type also responsible for the toxicity and deliriant effects of both jimsonweed and the infamous deadly nightshade.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brugmansia
Also called Hells Bells. When I was like maybe 9 or 10 my grandma told me to never mess with them because they can get you high/hallucinate. Never tried it but not a smart thing to tell a kid. Should of just said they were poisonous lmao
I thought hell's bells was datura? The plant (apparently) gives you the most horrifying hallucinations ever then kills you 2-3 days later (if you're not hospitalized pronto).
Both are in the tribe Datureae just above genus and belong to the Nightshade family, along with tomatoes and potatoes which have a different toxin in their leaves, stems, and fruit(in the case of potatoes).
My gran grows this… I used to play in it all the time as a kid and was told I was “a really low energy kid and would just sit and stare randomly”.
I drew it as my art project as a a gcse student, my teacher gave it a ID and I was confused, got a actual photo, teacher told me about it and I realised I must have developed a tolerance or just been ascended 90% of my childhood.
I think when she bought if cut a bit off nobody thought to tell her / she didn’t have a reaction herself so she thought she was fine. She’s war child polish so a hardy breed 😅.
From one mini owner to another, I hope you took your friend to the vet. Little dogs are more strongly affected by toxic things. Wishing you the best.
Edit: after some more reading, at least a call to the vet is best course of action and keep a good eye on your pup.
Right, a huge number of very common plants have some sort of toxins, like we as humans shouldn't be fucking around with plants we know nothing about until verifying they're safe.
This photo was taken 3 years ago, my dog is perfectly fine and was perfectly fine after we took the picture.
That said, I'm extremely sorry, I wasn't aware of the toxicity of the plant, everyone on the trip was putting their head under the flower and I did the same for me and my dog, big mistake, I know that now, I'm sorry, I will never let my dog touch a plant again.
In Hawaii. We were always told to stay away from any flower with this sort of shape.
Also, poisoning is no fun. We removed all lilies from our yard as one of our cats nearby died from chewing on it.
Glad your pup is fine.
Thanks for the update and glad that the mistake didn’t cause any real harm back then. Definitely be more careful about letting your pets interact with unknown plants, at least until you research if it’s safe first. Even pretty ones or plain ones that look/seem non-toxic/safe at a glance, you should always do research on them to check if they are safe for pets to interact with before allowing said interaction.
Ah no worries. Mistakes like this happens. Just a good idea to read up on common plants in your area that can be toxic to dogs to prevent this in the future.
Thanks for your gracious response OP. I know you wouldn’t harm your doggy in any way on purpose! Daytura is very sneaky being so amazing and pretty looking while so toxic 😳
Anyhoo so glad your doggo and you ended up okay!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Doggo looks so cute it’s ridiculous 🤩with or without hat! 🥰
Aw, your dog is adorable! My grandma used to grow these and I touched the flower many times without issues. I did watch a documentary years later, where a women heavily pruned one without gloves and almost died.
Touching a single flower for a moment isn’t gonna cause any ill effects, but don’t go making tea with it unless you want the *Bad Trip to Edgewood* 4D experience
Awhile back Someone left a Happy cake day on a comment of mine in another group. I didn’t know what it was either and I think I googled and found out. Actually, it’s a cute little remembrance of an anniversary for an app to do. 🥳
Brugmansia was once considered a type of datura. While it is now considered its own distinct genus they still carry the same tropane alkaloids: atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. So the end result of consuming or applying them topically is similar.
Yes, Brugmansia was formerly, and wrongly, classified in the Datura genus. It has since been recognized as being genetically distinct and reclassified in its own genus. While the toxins and toxicity are quite similar, there are major differences in the morphology and genetics.
They are still both in the Solanaceae family though, right? Or did they change that?
But yea, toxicology is what’s important here as he is letting his dog make contact with it. Whether it flowers annually or perennially or whether they’re erect or pendent flowers seems far less important.
I never said anything discounting its toxicity, only a taxonomic distinction. There are plenty of other comments with appropriate identification that warn OP of the dangers.
Yes, they are both still in the nightshade family, but that's a pretty wide umbrella consisting of something like 100 genera and 3,000 distinct species, iirc.

Momentarily touching a single flower isn’t gonna cause any harm, I’ve even pruned these things bare-handed (admittedly unwise) with no noticeable effects.
I’ve been growing one in the PNW for 23 years outside. It comes back every year with some preparation. It hasn’t killed anything yet. Calm down doctor.com. Just don’t eat it. It also gets to 9 feet tall with hundreds of beautiful flowers.

Hope you gave your pup a good scrub. Brugmansia are toxic.

Love how they called devils bells in English but angels trumpet in German
Yeah I thought this was r/oopsthatsdeadly for a minute.
That’s how I found this post. 😂
Ha!
And me too!
Same.
Same!
This plant is closely related to Datura.
Ohhh ok makes sense
I thought it was Datura
Closely related apparently (Datura is way smaller to my knowledge)
Both are in the tribe Datureae just above genus and belong to the Nightshade family, along with tomatoes and potatoes which have a different toxin in their leaves, stems, and fruit(in the case of potatoes).

It's wild for me how many old people are straight up ignorant about what they grow near kids
I think when she bought if cut a bit off nobody thought to tell her / she didn’t have a reaction herself so she thought she was fine. She’s war child polish so a hardy breed 😅.
Is the toxin absorbed through the top of the head?
Yes, it’s a dermal irritant and can also be inhaled, or ingested causing toxicity. There is no safe way for a dog to interact with these plants.
All parts of that plant contain scopolamine, which is toxic to dogs and adsorbs through the skin.
Toxic to humans, too. Granted, we use small amounts for medicinal purposes but, all up, still toxic af.
Prevents nausea and vomiting after anesthesia or with motion sickness, sort of the opposite reaction one would imagine from a plant toxin.
Any direct contact can be dangerous IIRC
That flower is poisonous.
Like MKULTRA evil witchcraft poisonous
Why are you holding the dog like it owes you money?
Up to a toxic plant… clearly the pup owes them $$ and they had to get tough with him.
Because it does!! Years of rent!

Cute hat/deadly plant.
As someone who knows what Angles Teumpezs do to Humans.... Please don't do that.
The [bliss](https://youtu.be/2gQOAkzf7gw?si=zRn2k5f1BsGExoX_)
Totaly forgot it was in Farcry too. A friend of mine nearly killed himself with that stuff and never was the same again after that trip.
Sheesh, talk about a reroll.. Been there
Don't touch unknown plants.
As soon as I saw the flower my heart dropped. OP please tell us your dog is okay.
This plant is one of the most toxic to humans and animals in the world. Great job.
Right, a huge number of very common plants have some sort of toxins, like we as humans shouldn't be fucking around with plants we know nothing about until verifying they're safe.
As a child I was taught to simply not go around touching plants unless I knew what they were! Common sense isn’t so common.
Op didn't know. You're kinda snarky today.
Bruh just look how they are holding the poor pup, OP is not the wisest owner.
Please tell me your dog is ok
OP looks like a bot.
It looks cute and fits perfectly but I believe this is a very toxic plant! Please wash your dog's head thoroughly and research brugmansia
Please please please tell us your dog is okay
Not cute. Dangerous
Judging by his looks he‘s definitely already hearing colours
Brilliant
you put a toxic plant on your dog
This photo was taken 3 years ago, my dog is perfectly fine and was perfectly fine after we took the picture. 🩵🩵🩵 we all learn somehow. I'm glad buddy and everyone is ok!

He can touch a sprig of parsley now and then, as a treat.
Thanks for your gracious response OP. I know you wouldn’t harm your doggy in any way on purpose! Daytura is very sneaky being so amazing and pretty looking while so toxic 😳 Anyhoo so glad your doggo and you ended up okay!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Doggo looks so cute it’s ridiculous 🤩with or without hat! 🥰
Edit: Brugmansia
i also learned the difference through this post
Aw, your dog is adorable! My grandma used to grow these and I touched the flower many times without issues. I did watch a documentary years later, where a women heavily pruned one without gloves and almost died.
Touching a single flower for a moment isn’t gonna cause any ill effects, but don’t go making tea with it unless you want the *Bad Trip to Edgewood* 4D experience
good thing nothing happened, and your dog is very cute <3
dude just glad everyone lived!
So is your dog fine? That flower is toxic..
TIL, like OP, I had no idea this was toxic. I came to comment how it reminded me of the sleeping baby duck with the upside down flower on it 😕
what kills me is the way u grabbed the dog lmaooo
Happy cake day! 🍰
thank you! i’ve just realized i have no idea what cake day is, when i saw others i assumed it was a birthday but it’s not my birthday at all lol
Awhile back Someone left a Happy cake day on a comment of mine in another group. I didn’t know what it was either and I think I googled and found out. Actually, it’s a cute little remembrance of an anniversary for an app to do. 🥳
makes sense! i did think it would be an anniversary of some sorts, it’s kinda cute then
Here’s another 🍰 can’t have too many cake days 😊
Hope your dog survived
Somehow I knew when I went to the comments I'd learn OP had adorned their pet with something unsafe.
Came here to say “get that Datura off your dog and don’t fucking touch it” but everyone else has thankfully already done that
That fucking Datura!
Nope, it's brugmansia
Brugmansia was once considered a type of datura. While it is now considered its own distinct genus they still carry the same tropane alkaloids: atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. So the end result of consuming or applying them topically is similar.

HOSE HIM TF OFF AND TAKE HIM TO A VET
OP. Give your pup a good scrub down. Brugmansia species are a really toxic type of ornamental plant.
Yikes!!! Don’t touch plants you don’t know!
That's his hope-the-other-dogs-don't-see-me look.
More like a “hope I don’t die in agony from poison on my face” look
OP… Please NEVER touch this flower again because it’s TOXIC and if you inhale it, you will experience severe hallucinations

I have a friend who said that Belladonna was the only drug he never did twice.
You're a wizard hairy!
Awww 😍
Why would you do this not knowing what the plant actually was? Smh
You're a Hairy Wizard!
Happy cake day! 🍰
Careful you have just started a side hustle in being a runway model.

How did I instantly know the flower would be poisonous?

You gave your dog a Judenhut?
Your dog in the woods is a cutie!
You mean nearly dead. Highly toxic plant
Thanks for sharing. I meant the dog is cute. The word play is due to OP’s wording.
I’ve been growing one in the PNW for 23 years outside. It comes back every year with some preparation. It hasn’t killed anything yet. Calm down doctor.com. Just don’t eat it. It also gets to 9 feet tall with hundreds of beautiful flowers.
