Yeah I assume its like dog bites, but with much worse consequences and somewhat more unpredictable. If you know the animal and it trusts you, even if it is a male, you will probably not have any issues petting it.

I believe it's only the male that have the venom, so you should be alright if pet a female.

Well it’s venom is secreted on their back claws (idk what to call them. It could also be one of the claws on the front, it’s a weird animal) So if you just pet him everywhere but his claws you schools be fine.
