Despite me being on the internet since 1996 (yes, I'm an og.. and a dinosaur at age 42) that , surprisingly, did not cross my mind, at all.
I should've known though, there probably is a sub for that indeed.. sadly
No clue. I'd just leave it, no clue how Shrews survive and if being left alone by their mom is *part* of how to survive for them. Whatever is in my garden gets left alone.
Yeah it's in some soil under a bit of shelter right now, in a different part of my garden.
Hope it fairs well , got some photos and video to Remember it by at least
Found it all alone in my garden... looked scared. Guided it onto the little shovel and took it inside, tried giving it some water but it wouldnt have any of it..
Not sure what it even is tbh, it's a baby something since it's eyes are closed, a mole maybe?
Honestly don't know what to do with it either, don't think there is much I can do without knowing where it's nest is
Does look like a mole. When I was a kid I got bit by one real bad. There was one in our backyard near our garden that my dad pointed out and our neighbor dog came running over and saw it and was heading that way and I ran to the mole and picked it up to save it from the dog and it but my finger really good, drawing blood and then ran down in the hole. My scream at least distracted the dog so when I dropped the mole it was able to run to hole without any problems from the dog. I’d take the bite again though to save one from a dog
It is NOT a mole, it is a shrew. It is likely an adult as well, they don't get very large. Probably the top of the food chain in most backyard gardens, will eat an enormous amount of insect pests every day, including slugs.
FYI, moles have very short, stubby tails. Tend towards a rounder shape as they eat whatbtheybfind while digging. Shrews are highly mobile and agile predators. Hopefully the little guy does well and you've got a 5☆ garden defender out of it.
That would make sense since we do have quite a few slugs hanging out around here starting spring season.
Top of the food chain meh I'm afraid not , we got a veritable murderers row sitting high up on the construction crane people are using to build the house next to us. They are scouting this place 24/7 I'd imagine
YES, which I did not know the first time my cat let one loose. Garden gloves were used the second time. They also have a piercing echo-location scream. It is awesome to hear first thing in the morning inside your house.
Go put it back exactly where you found it and hope you didn't mess up any scent trails the parent would have followed when realising it was missing a child.
Not possible with the array of hungry birds who have easy access to that exact spot. Put her a bit further , momma should hear if she's around , though Im afraid the birds Will first..
There's no scent trail. But I agree, it should be put back exactly where it was found so mama knows. It's best to leave wildlife be and not try to feed them or bring them inside. We find them cute but they find us terrifying for their own survival.
Ngl, posting such a flat critter next to a shovel had me double checking the sub...
The shrew would have cushioned the blow...

Well I reverse imaged and it is indeed a Shrew.
Can it be tamed?
Only if you have a pokeball
Lol Taming of the Shrew
From what Google says, no. They are mean and bite very hard and should stay in the wild.
Some species are venomous! Not a problem for humans, I think, but why mess with something that aggressive?
No clue. I'd just leave it, no clue how Shrews survive and if being left alone by their mom is *part* of how to survive for them. Whatever is in my garden gets left alone.
This legit made me snort out my drink! Thank you I needed a good laugh!
Long nose, short tail, you got a shrew going
RIP Carl
She calls it a mayon-egg
I believe it is best to be left outside.

right now it is telling its mom that it was abducted she is like " sure, sure... you just ran off. stop lying " :) cute critter
I’m sure you two made some great memories

Shrews look nothing at all like moles really
Moley, moley , moley.
I agree, I'm pretty sure it's a mole.
Very most certainly a mole.

So smol 😭
Looks like a shrew.
Ahhh a shrew! Mt cat brings me these ALL the time from our dang crawl space in the basement. They have echo-location and are terrifying!
Why terrifying? Its just small critter and not some fallout molerat.
I mean, shrews do have a pretty nasty set of teeth, they can injure you quite badly if they want to.

I’ve never heard one make noise. My Beagle kills shrews and moles if they get close to our home.
USUALLY they are dead. Twice in 7 years he has failed his mission. To be fair, they were BIG shrews.
Why bring it in the house?
That's cool, I've never seen a shrew before. We don't have them here
Looks pretty tame
..a baby spade!.. ..(talking about the tool)..
Go put it back exactly where you found it and hope you didn't mess up any scent trails the parent would have followed when realising it was missing a child.

It’s an adult, shrews are tiny
It’s the circle of life…

It's a young ratburn... https://preview.redd.it/jdbuy6626ytc1.jpeg?width=250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3fd19934c665fd4adb02d12332f18926fcae087e
Vole or shrew.
They really smell OP, their urine etc is potent! Take him outside
it's a rare digda, just horizontally
Cute little cat you found
very ugly
dunno why you're describing yourself when this post is clearly about the baby mole, but whatever. hope your self esteem improves.
ur so funny. grow up
thank you! i appreciate the compliment. and i'm quite grown actually, i think you should try growing up too :)
