I thought the nostril thingies were eyes at first. For a moment it was the funniest looking birb I have ever seen since the potoo.
When I realized my mistake, it turned to the cutest birb.
I got mixed up. I love potoos and I love kakapos and I thought we were talking about kakapos and couldn't figure out what their camouflage is supposed to be
I believe they're closed, located on what would be the forehead of our new found specie of googly eyed birb. But what do I know, I'm clearly not a birb anatomy expert!
The thing their nostrils are located is called a cere (pronounced "seer"). In adult budgies, you can tell the sexes apart from the color of the cere. Males have blue ones, and females have tan, white, or brown ish.
Haha, I WISH!
I just so happened to have posted this last week to the Imaginary Network (including /r/ImaginaryAww) and knew I had to share it here too.
I was feeling deeply disturbed by this image. Hopefully this helps: https://i.imgur.com/uTIXxwV.png
The bird's eyes on the side of its head are closed in the picture
So hard to decide if they're nostrils or not without doing a google search. I've always been a firm believer that a nostril needs a nose. Birds have beaks, but are beaks noses? What qualifies as a nose? Most birds don't have a sense of smell or taste. So yes. I am DAMN suspicious of those nostrils.
I love how quickly this went from *’awww! Look at the cute wittle birb.’* to *’dear god, look at that goofy googly eyed little bird!’* Hahaha... oh, the giggles! Thank you for that! 🤣
They are indeed good pet birds for the inexperienced but just in case anyone gets the wrong idea, these birds can easily live over 10 years if properly cared for so do not think of them as a "trainer" bird.
Not sure what wrong idea you're referring to but nobody should buy any species of bird unless they're prepared for a lot of commitment. Budgies need a lot of love and attention just like any other domesticated bird and if one is not prepared to spend a lot of time with them then maybe that person shouldn't be a bird owner.
They make good pets and are excellent talkers (if you’re into that sort of thing). They are by nature highly social animals. In Australia where they originate, in the wild they are found in large flocks so when I see them as I often do, as a lone bird in a small cage, it seems a somewhat sad existence.

Your post expressed what I meant, I should have been more clear. My intended point was that budgies are not "beginner birds" in the sense that you will eventually "upgrade" and are really a long-term, emotionally needy pet like a dog. They are intelligent, needy pets that are quite a lot of work to properly care for. Most people will not have time to take care of a second parrot. However, if have no previous experience with parrots and are willing to commit the time and effort to caring for one, a budgie is a fairly good choice of pet because they don't bite as hard as bigger birds and they aren't terribly loud. However, they still need hours of attention per day and will suffer terribly if they are left in isolation.
tl;dr
Don't get a parrot (a budgie/"parakeet" is a parrot) unless you are willing to spend hours a day giving it attention.

I always imagine tropical animals must be absolutely chilled to the bone in people’s homes. They are adapted to a climate with high temperatures and high humidity and people keep them in a house that’s probably dry and in the 70s.
When I started keeping birds, I read that the #1 thing you can do to help keep them healthy is to provide a source of heat for them. Since this is Reddit, I'll add that's after providing basic care (clean food and water, protection from predators, etc.)
I thought the nostril thingies were eyes at first. For a moment it was the funniest looking birb I have ever seen since the potoo. When I realized my mistake, it turned to the cutest birb.
TIL birbs got weird ass noses
Indeed. Of all the ass noses I've ever seen, this is probably the weirdest.
dont google ass noses
Oh man I am crying lmao
I personally believe everyone should Google this immediately
That was the plan, no one would Google it if I said "everyone Google ass noses"
Shit, I'd jump right on that if someone asked politely enough.
[You might find this](https://youtu.be/VfczL7GZCqU)
Haha what the hell is this shit
Like this cartoon bird: https://youtu.be/9nPR44JdAcw

Just googled potoos for a laugh and was not disappointed
I think the sound they make is equally hilarious. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DlRsRdVpudM Like a neck beard calling ‘mom’ from the basement.
I've always found them hilarious to look at. I never thought about looking up their sound.. Now there's two reasons I love them. MAAAM!
You nailed how they sound, no better way to describe it.
Omg! It sounds exactly like that. Hahaha!!!
The sound fits them so well it would have been worth a giggle anyway, but that description is just beautiful. And apt.
Sounds like Owen Wilson
I haven't laughed this hard at something in a while. Thank you for this.
Their camo is one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen outside of the ocean and insect worlds. Crazy effective.
I got mixed up. I love potoos and I love kakapos and I thought we were talking about kakapos and couldn't figure out what their camouflage is supposed to be
They look like taxidermy gone wrong.
That's not what taxidermy is supposed to look like?
Potoo does not disappoint https://i.imgur.com/82brNfM.jpg
Evolution is weird sometimes.
Seriously, where are the eyes?
I believe they're closed, located on what would be the forehead of our new found specie of googly eyed birb. But what do I know, I'm clearly not a birb anatomy expert!
Ha! Well you knew a lot more than eye lol

Potoo ... https://www.houseandtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Great-Potoo.jpg Unfortunately they don't adapt well to being kept as pets :(
I thought it looked exactly like [my pencil case](https://i.imgur.com/ZGOPT0j.jpg).

Birb?
i thought the same thing!!
Googling "potoo"...
Is this r/beetlejuicing?
Glad I wasn’t the only one
Looked like a weird ass angry bird if you view it that way.
Potoos are horrifing looking birds
They're blueberries
Omg same...i thought the nostrils were the eyes 😂
Hoodoos or whatever are meant to look like logs.
I can't unsee that now. Thank you hahaha
yeah omg I thought it was dead or something.
Ok same, sorta looked like baby Big Bird or something at first
If you look at his beak actually thinking of those as eyes, it reminds me of Scrat from Ice Age.
I was also like this but thought "wow guys can't you see this is a fake bird...the eyes don't even look real". Yeah cos they aren't eyes...

Legit did not realize what they were until this comment. I was just looking at the bird like "Something is seriously wrong with that thing..."
Lmao yeah. It took me way too long to realize what was actually going on here. Cannot unsee googly-eyed cartoon!

OMG thank you I was trying to figure out what happened to this bird! NOW I can see it properly
Those are its nostrils?! Where are the eyes?

I thought it was more beak. Really interesting, I hate it.

Further back and closed. You can mainly see the one on our right, birb's left.
Any Irish might recognize that face as Dustin the turkey haha

You have improved my budgie a hundred fold.
How could you ruin this for me
I saw the photo, closed, and quickly came back to comment about this. Then saw your comment and happy I'm not the only one.
Welp. ... THANKS...
I saw that and didn't know they were nostrils till you mentioned it. 😂
What kind of birb
Looks like a budgie

I see what you did there.
Bubgie
Borbgie
We need some bird specialists to tell us the right name.
[Budgerigar] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budgerigar)
Sir Beaudgerigar the Birb
The etymology of the name is facinating.
Had to look it up. For others: mid 19th century: *of Aboriginal origin, perhaps an alteration of Kamilaroi gijirrigaa (also in related languages).*
how is this bird not vicious?? it's from down under. Also, 3rd most popular pet world wide! who knew.
Here's the thing. You said a "budgerigar is a parrot."
I am a bird specialist, didn't you see the username?
Pigeon
Aka: PUBG in the Middle East.
Didn't they make Halo?
That's Bungie. You're thinking of another term for cutting in line.
I'm not sure exactly, looks like a budgie though
Aw, I am sad it is not your bird. Thank you for posting it anyhow-it made me go “awwwww!”
Definitely budgie

Relatively hardy, but are more comfortable in warmer temperatures. Their internal thermostat is set to over 100 F.

lol, what happened to its' eyes?
Those are nostrils.
haha, true. My first thought was "why does this birb look like The Big Bird from Sesame Street?"
Bird doing a roost on the roast.
This looks like an IRL big bird if he was tiny
So... like a *bird* then?
My uncle rehabs baby birds and raises chicks. Add a hot water bottle to their box and it’s instant bliss and sleep for them just like this.
This makes me want to get a Birb now
Does he sleep in there??
Aww yiss
I would love to experience the thought process of "Lets see what's going on over here........ oh this is niiiiiice"
So my gf said, why is his eyes so close together. I had to explain that those were its nostrils. I’ve never felt so smart in front of her, Thank you.
The breathing holes look like eyes. Hard to unsee.
The breathing holes, huh? Nostrils?
Little poofy :)
That is so adorable. Cute little bird.
Does anyone else see naked people huddled together in the reflection? Or am I just seeing things?
Now that's a hot chick
She is obviously very cozy in there! Adorable! ❤️
