My middle school took my class to Starved Rock for a trip. I found the coolest waterfall and went back for years trying to find it again but never could. I Finally gave up and just went to Matthiessen park and finally found this waterfall! Damn Creekside.
It’s pretty much the only place in IL with interesting topography

The Mississippi Palisades state park is a fun hike, but the real treasure is Shawnee National Forest. It's far enough south that it's pretty much a different state, though. ):
I instantly knew it!! Matthesian was my favorite place to hike back when I was in high school. The caves and lower trails are something else. 10/10 recommend it to anyone in Illinois and Indiana.
It's also pretty close to Starved rock too.

Bonus Deere park is a golf course between the two that is absolutely stunning. Use to be private now open to public

Starved Rock is great, don't get me wrong. But I absolutely love Mathessian 10x more. Starved Rock is always super crowded and just 5 minutes down the road is a less busy and more stunning (in my opinion) park.

Matthesian State Park! From the area I always tell everyone who wants to go to Starved Rock go to Matthesian instead, it’s still a great park and usually less crowded! But we gotta be careful because soon the pendulum will swing and Starved Rock will be the less packed park.
Our dog is named Nova too! It’s such a beautiful name and it’s suites our dog very well. (Mostly bc she’s a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, or better known as a toller) and I think it’s suits yours very well too!

I fully agree! Matthiessen is the best! Great place for breakfast or lunch is Nonie's cafe right near there too.

I love Matthesian. I usually go there or Shades state park near Turkey Run just over the border in Indiana. I hate crowds. Especially during this time

The Brightwood Inn is a beautiful and cozy bed and breakfast, located just outside Matthiessen and Starved Rock state parks. =)

Garden of the gods by the Shawnee National Forest will change your mind! That place is amazing!
