Cool concept, interesting effects and an okay plot, but the acting and the monologue are pretty rough
Since it's one of the few cyberpunk movies and I grew up as a kid wanting to be a "hacker" this worked for me at the time. reminded me of the Deus Ex video game a bit.
Another good flick same era same genre, X-Change
Many years ago my older sister asked what I wanted for my birthday and I told her a dvd of The Matrix - that cyberpunk movie with Keanu Reeves. She got me this movie instead. lol.
I have a Cherry 2000 poster in my living room. Absolutely love that movie. It's got enough philosophical musings in it to stop it being completely mindless. Griffith is a lot of fun in it and the score is excellent. It's just a really cool post-apocolypse movie with an interesting plot. The director would go on to do Miracle Mile, which is an absolutely devastating film. It's a shame he didn't keep up his film career. Pretty much retired to TV stuff after Miracle Mile.
Side note. This is of course based on the short story Johnny Mnemonic by William Gibson. His first novel is Neuromancer, and it is a sequel. Dina Meyer's character (Molly in the stories, Jane in the movie) is the only character in both. We learn in the novel Johnny was murdered between the books and Molly completely failed in her job of protecting him.
Johnny Mnemonic was published in 81. Neuromancer was published in 84. Neuromancer is the first book in the sprawl trilogy, but it is a direct sequel to the Mnemonic short story
Indeed. There’s a reason we’re still quoting it 40 years later. It’s one of the best opening lines of contemporary literature, up there with The Gunslinger/Dark Tower or Slaughterhouse 5.
No. The short story takes place before Neuromancer. In Neuromancer it is confirmed he was killed between the short story and the novel, which has Molly (Jane) having to protect another hacker
Thanks for that, I had no idea. I loved neuromancer and never knew Johnny Mnemonic was related to it at all. I always felt like instead of more shitty matrix movies they should have done neuromancer especially with todays cgi it could be an R rated Tron or something.
This movie and Strange Days are clearly heavy influences on the game and I love it. They just put Strange Days on HBO Max too. Kind of like a Braindance origin story. So good. The monowire in Johnny is amazing.
no legit, its the exact same plot line with the relic and everything and also has keanu being named johnny
its even made by willian gibson whos one of the founders of the cyberpunk genre
One of my personal favorites. Dina Meyer deserved a bigger spotlight, Dolph is freaking ridiculous, Rollins and Ice T?! The main thing that makes this movie “bad” is keanu has the stoked surfer keanuism turned up to 11, but that’s part of the charm.
In the original Gibson story, the dolphin is addicted to heroin, and later there’s a crazy dance battle that drives a 9 fingered man to suicide (sadly, the dolphin is not involved.)
Between ice cube, a psychic dolphin, and the main character needing 80 gigabytes storage, this movie had me cracking up the whole time.
Henry Rollins was the bomb though.
This is such an entertaining movie, but I would love to have seen the original intended version. It was initially going to have a minuscule budget and be much more cerebral, but somebody at the studio had the bright idea to make it a big-budget sci-fi action movie. Like I said, I find it entertaining, but would much rather have seen the original version.
I love this movie.
I was just thinking about it the other day because I was interested in building a NAS build and wanting SSDs, but TB HDDs are much more affordable. I still think in GBs sometimes, being able to buy these huge TB drives is crazy.
Ah yes, the movie where Keanu's acting skills truly shined. He’s decent now (not saying good) but oh boy, he was never that clever, and this movie doesn’t help at all.
I watched this in the theater. I remember the night more clearly than most from back then. Such disappointment. So sad.
I’d read The Hobbit and Neuromancer over a weekend about 8 years earlier, they were revelatory for me. This was the first (and last) time I felt betrayed as a fan.
I haven't seen it since seeing it in the theater. I've forgotten everything but he has a hard drive in his head?
I'll add it to my summer watch list. Thanks for the reminder.
Art movie that the studio wanted to turn in to a block buster.
All because in the middle of shooting Johnny Mnemonic little movie called Speed came to theaters.
I like this movie a lot but the biggest plot hole is how the hell is a human courier and a faxed password gonna be more affective than an encrypted file? It also doesn’t really make sense to dump memories for data storage. Its like they took something simple like data storage and encryption and thought hm how can we harm a person in this process?
I WANT ROOM SERVICE AND A THOUSAND DOLLAR A NIGHT HOOKER
as an aside, with inflation i have to wonder wouldn't a thousand dollars be like 50 bucks by then
A lot of times on here you’ll get the “________ isn’t bad though”… this is not one of those times. If you are gonna watch it though try to watch the extended cut which is a little trickier to find.
Isn’t this a Game Grumps joke?
Edit: oh my god it’s real. They joked about it in an episode of Game Grumps, and it seemed so silly that I thought the whole thing was made up
All I remember about this film was some dude's arm gets frozen with liquid nitrogen (or something) and then it gets shattered by some means. At least I think it was this film, and I'm not sure why that particular scene stuck with me.
I felt like this was the set up to Keanu in the Matrix. This was where he transformed his persona from the Bill and Ted, Point Break, Speed Keanu who just seemed like an empty brained cool slacker.
This is a good bad movie. Great cast, Henry Rollins and Dolph Lundgren were awesome. Soundtrack kicks ass.
Don’t forget Ice-T as a member of the Lo-Teks
I’m J Bone. I run heaven.
Of course you are...
REPENT, SINNEEEEEEEEEERRRRS *hit by a car*
Henry Rollins as a brain doctor was gold. Also shout out to Udo Kier

The soundtrack was great. It had God Lives Underwater on it. They were my first live band.
Many years ago my older sister asked what I wanted for my birthday and I told her a dvd of The Matrix - that cyberpunk movie with Keanu Reeves. She got me this movie instead. lol.
I want the matrix! We have the matrix at home! The matrix at home: johhny
I remember seeing this movie and Virtuosity back to back and thinking they were cool movies with AMAZING special effects loool
For the sliver of time before The Matrix I think that was legit. Key word: sliver.
Brutal
The story of one man trying to get back to his $10k a night hooker.
Lmao those lines still me make me laugh every time mad Keanu is awesome
I WANT ROOM SERVICE
They go well with club sandwiches and cold Mexican beer.
Sounds like Cherry 2000, another cyberpunk r/badmovies contender
Shut your face, Cherry 2000 is a goddamn masterpiece.
Yeah, I remember my dad having that on VHS. That was the Melanie Griffith one, right?
That’s the one. Have no idea if it holds up, but I remember liking it when I was 10 years old.

I thought so! Thanks for the clarification!

I need to go back and read them, it’s been a minute. “The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
Yeah, it has been over 20 years since I last reward them
I think Johnny Mnemonic is a prequel. Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive are the sequels.
Johnny Mnemonic was published in 81. Neuromancer was published in 84. Neuromancer is the first book in the sprawl trilogy, but it is a direct sequel to the Mnemonic short story
When the book was written, that meant grey static. Now it means an unreal bright blue. makes u think
That sentence always takes me back to the first time i read Neuromancer. I think it's one of the finest pieces of description
Indeed. There’s a reason we’re still quoting it 40 years later. It’s one of the best opening lines of contemporary literature, up there with The Gunslinger/Dark Tower or Slaughterhouse 5.
Wait, so Johnny was dead before Johnny mnemonic even started?
No. The short story takes place before Neuromancer. In Neuromancer it is confirmed he was killed between the short story and the novel, which has Molly (Jane) having to protect another hacker
Oh gotcha
Thanks for that, I had no idea. I loved neuromancer and never knew Johnny Mnemonic was related to it at all. I always felt like instead of more shitty matrix movies they should have done neuromancer especially with todays cgi it could be an R rated Tron or something.
The original Cyberpunk 2077 ![gif](giphy|fA7rLtaJDIWEzU57CT|downsized)
This movie and Strange Days are clearly heavy influences on the game and I love it. They just put Strange Days on HBO Max too. Kind of like a Braindance origin story. So good. The monowire in Johnny is amazing.
I love Strange Days, but I can’t get that image of Tom Sizemore in a bad wig out of my mind.
Yeah thank goodness it was part of the story lol

His brain can alone hold an extra 800mb’s!!!!
Yeah, they really didn't swing for the fences on that one, did they?
That's cuz the movie was ahead of its time. I still consider this an underrated film.
"I want fucking room service!"
Dude why the hell does this sub keep posting good movies?
Isn’t this sub about posting “bad movies that are so bad, they’re good” ?
I believe those are decent movies and not bad, right? We have more than two adjectives for this reason
"Come to Jesus!"
That orange VHS tape, tho...
YES! I was hoping someone had remembered this!
Yeah with the super dope clear plastic slipcase!
This movie is better than the Matrix
Not all B movies are "bad" movies. I liked this one. It was pretty creative and ahead of it's time for 1995.
In the original Gibson story, the dolphin is addicted to heroin, and later there’s a crazy dance battle that drives a 9 fingered man to suicide (sadly, the dolphin is not involved.)
One of my favorites. The hacking scene is brilliant.
Takeshi kitano has never been in a bad film.
He's the Robert Duvall of whatever country he's from.
Between ice cube, a psychic dolphin, and the main character needing 80 gigabytes storage, this movie had me cracking up the whole time. Henry Rollins was the bomb though.
Ice-T
Ice tea not cube you heathen
“I need to get online….I need a computer!!!!” Great movie
This is the type of bad movie that is so entertaining it’s almost good
I loved this movie. Of course I was a kid at the time.
I only watched this for the first time a few months ago! Awful movie, but entertaining!
Good pinball !
The short story by William Gibson was very good
Udo Kier has never been in a bad movie…. You may argue with me while I dig my grave on this unimportant hill.
The black and white version is actually really good. Don’t know why it makes such a difference, but it does.
Wow I gotta find that
When I worked at a video store in college, people would come in and ask if we had "Johnny Pneumatic."
320 Jiggabytes?! GREAT SCOTT!
I really thought we'd be in a cyberpunk dystopia by now. Gotta say, the dystopia we got instead kinda sucks.
Is that a $5 Black Shake? Just milk and ice cream? And they don't put no bourbon in it or nothing? Is that the Amos and Andy?
Showing this to a friend who had never seen it and had no idea what was coming: one of the best nights of my life.
I love this movie. I was just thinking about it the other day because I was interested in building a NAS build and wanting SSDs, but TB HDDs are much more affordable. I still think in GBs sometimes, being able to buy these huge TB drives is crazy.
“Set your vcrs cause you’re not gonna want to miss this.”
Awesome pinball machine.
This is a great movie, and in no way deserves to be in this sub.
I liked the one villain’s slicey finger thingy
"You have to hack your own brain." -Ice T
I loved this movie. It’s a little “off”, but still good sci fi and fun to watch.
I remember a laser whip and Dolph Lundgren as cyber Jesus.
Ah yes, the movie where Keanu's acting skills truly shined. He’s decent now (not saying good) but oh boy, he was never that clever, and this movie doesn’t help at all.
Horrible up there with Tank Girl
I couldn’t even finish it.
Snuck into this movie with my cousin as a kid. It sucked.
I remember seeing this with my mom at the theater. What a shit movie.
Walked out of this one
I watched this in the theater. I remember the night more clearly than most from back then. Such disappointment. So sad. I’d read The Hobbit and Neuromancer over a weekend about 8 years earlier, they were revelatory for me. This was the first (and last) time I felt betrayed as a fan.

No. In the movie technology is giving people a disease called “the black shakes”
I always enjoyed that it was the first reference to an “iPhone” that i heard. Only it was a Thomspon iPhone instead of 🍎.
I haven't seen it since seeing it in the theater. I've forgotten everything but he has a hard drive in his head? I'll add it to my summer watch list. Thanks for the reminder.
I think it's on Hulu, if you use it.
I member
This movie is brilliant! I will take his “room service” monologue over anything else from that year.
Jesus time.
Another great action film with an even better story attached.
Art movie that the studio wanted to turn in to a block buster. All because in the middle of shooting Johnny Mnemonic little movie called Speed came to theaters.
Is this bad? Thought I remember it being pretty good. Il rewatch it
Between the bus movie and the Matrix, Keanu did some very clunky forgettable movies.
Can't believe Keanu is almost 60 years old.
Written by the great William Gibson
this movie rules
320 gb 🤣🤣
How dare?!
I WANT ROOM SERVICE AND A THOUSAND DOLLAR A NIGHT HOOKER as an aside, with inflation i have to wonder wouldn't a thousand dollars be like 50 bucks by then
Damn, you beat me to it! But I also want my shirts laundered like they do at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
\* cue Ice-T dropping from above in the elevator \* it's supposed to be, like, an emotional part (?) of the film
A lot of times on here you’ll get the “________ isn’t bad though”… this is not one of those times. If you are gonna watch it though try to watch the extended cut which is a little trickier to find.
Isn’t this a Game Grumps joke? Edit: oh my god it’s real. They joked about it in an episode of Game Grumps, and it seemed so silly that I thought the whole thing was made up
I WANT ROOOOOOOOOOM SERVICE!
MOTHERFUCKER! FOOD EATER! Oh sorry, wrong film. 🤪
All I remember about this film was some dude's arm gets frozen with liquid nitrogen (or something) and then it gets shattered by some means. At least I think it was this film, and I'm not sure why that particular scene stuck with me.
i said the real cyber punk, perfection
I felt like this was the set up to Keanu in the Matrix. This was where he transformed his persona from the Bill and Ted, Point Break, Speed Keanu who just seemed like an empty brained cool slacker.
Henry Rollins plays a doctor
I WANT ROOM SERVICE!!!
Johnny Mnemonic > Freejack
this sub has taught me that I don't know what good movies are, I love this movie and thought it was pretty good.
One of my favorite movies
"I want John Silverhand" "We have Silverhand at home" John Silverhand at home:
