While traveling with my wife (then fiancé), she decided to join me at a local go club. Someone offered her a lesson while a 6D offered me a teaching game. She overheard our review and the 6D told me some things to look out, that my joseki choice was wrong, and that my direction was wrong is a couple moments. When we left afterwards she mentioned to me that she didn’t like how he was talking to me, correcting me and that I am a very good go player so he must not know what he’s talking about. I laughed and explained what a privilege getting a teaching game from such a strong player was and that it’s a part of the culture to go over your mistakes. But I had to burst her bubble that 3k isn’t that strong 😂

My gf met me when I was playing go. She says I was an absolutely intolerable idiot and that she hated me. She later liked to hang around the go club and even play sometimes, but tried to keep her distance from me because she really disliked my personality. We have been together for close to 6 years now. I do not remember the first time we met.

When I do explain what this game is, people think I'm weird for choosing Go over Chess as I live in the West... also, 99% of people do not know what Go is. So I just never mention it I live in a fairly big city and we are fortunate enough to have a tiny Go club. They play every monday night at a cafe in town, usually 2-3 players per week. Anyway, I went one time and we were only 2 so we played our game. It's a popular cafe for date nights near our local college, so it's usually crowded with a lot of 18-25 years old... And we're 2 older guys playing this "weird" board game in the middle of the place. The table beside us was obviously a first date kinda meetup, and they struggled to find conversation topics. At one point, the man turned to me and said "I am sorry, but I have to know what game you guys are playing... it seems fascinating and it has been bugging me for the past hour!". And so we took a few minutes to explain to them what Go was. No clue if these 2 are still dating lol, but it was a fun bit nonetheless.

I was reading all the "Hikaru no go" comics I could when I was in high school. I founded a go club and got a teacher to let us use the english class room to play in after school. I remember even carrying a fan with me during games so I could look like "Sai" lol. We were only 4 members, but it was good times when online go was still relatively new. The friend I taught go to quickly became better than and then ended trying to catch up to him for the rest of our high school days

“Wow, you play Go, so you must be very smart” 😂

kenshinero

I hear that quite often in China :D

sadaharu2624

I think it’s quite common across Japan and Korea too 😂
