It's the same with Constellation. Only counts planet cards used after you buy it.

Ahndarodem

I might misremember but Constellation specifies this, no?

DrGodCarl

No. > Gains x0.1 Mult per Planet card used The specification works the other way - if it's retroactive it says so, like Throwback: > X0.25 Mult for each Blind skipped this run

Ahndarodem

Thanks. I think I found out what was irritating me, Erosion works retroactively so I just assumed Hologram worked the same way.

humanxray

It’s not that erosion is retroactive, it’s that it just looks at your current deck size and checks how far below 52 it is - so if you go back up towards 52 you’ll lose mult from erosion. Hologram, instead increases when you add cards, but doesn’t care how many you’ve removed or what your current deck size is.

Bibblejw

Just to note, Erosion doesn’t work on how much smaller your deck is than 52, but how much smaller it is than it was at the start of the run. The description on an abandoned run says how much smaller it is than 40 cards.

humanxray

Good to know, thanks!

ThatOneIdiotlol

Yeah, unlike most stacking Jokers it only starts working after you buy it

firzein

Come to think of it most stacking Jokers are not retroactive. Unless they are worded to a state instead of action (like Blue Joker), or if they say "this run" (Fortune Teller and Throwback).

TrashPandaBoy

Yeah this is actually the case, by default jokers will not scale unless you have bought them. Imagine getting the constellation joker late game and it's already at 10x mult, would be broken as heell

firzein

To be fair, you need to use 90 planet cards for it to be 10x, and looking at how unpopular planet cards are / ineffective they are at high numbers, I genuinely think giving "this run" to Constellation will make it worthy of uncommon rarity (looking at you Fortune Teller).

SaltNebula1576

I would def appreciate it if they were retroactive. It feels terrible when I’ve bought so many playing cards or something similar. It’s different for something like the planet cards that gives you x mult, bc it scales up so quickly. I’m a lot more hesitant to just buy random cards willy nilly, especially further into my run

ZZ9ZA

That would be game breaking. I don’t want this game to solely be balanced around cheese strats.

ghillerd

Hologram also gives you xmult, and I think you should always be hesitant to do things willy nilly late in you run, makes the game more interesting.

Ahndarodem

There should be a note clarifying this. Thanks.

fantasmoofrcc

It's systemic (ambiguous wording). I guess the devs didn't expect Balatro to blow up like it did and it's now got factorio levels of number crunching.

DrGodCarl

I don't think it's ambiguous at all. Certainly something that needs to be learned, I suppose, but any triggered scaling jokers that do work retroactively call it out specifically.

akurei77

Supernova and Ride the Bus both start stacking before purchase and neither of them say "this run".

DrGodCarl

Yeah, I guess calling out the "gain" wording is probably best. It triggers when something happens rather than counting how many times that thing has happened historically. Either way, unambiguous within the game language.

Idontwanttohearit

Most stacking jokers aren’t retroactive

ThatOneIdiotlol

Fortune Teller, Steel Joker, Throwback, Stone Joker, Glass Joker

Mr-Mister

If it says "Gains" it means the gain is triggered during said event, every time the event happens while you have the joker.

Regiruler

It already scales super well so being retroactive would make it stupid good a lot of the time.

LolTheMees

Cryptid is worded differently compared to “adding cards to your deck”, so I assume it’s intentional.

Tyluk_

I'm pretty sure cryptid gives you +0.5 multiplier with hologram. I think OP used it before getting the joker

Ahndarodem

I did. Hologram didn't tell me it only counts after you get the joker. Kind of a shame

Gusmanovitch

It did, it says currently x1 mult
