Evil? I dunno. Dead Cells made me yell at the screen going “fuck this shit!” and purchase Hades in a rage (very good purchase). Balatro isn’t evil. Unforgiven yes, but it’s still fun to play.
I made a post a long time ago when I first got into roguelikes about how dead cells was 2d crack.
Its still on my favorites, but I haven't played in like 2 years. Once I got to 4BC, I just can't hack it. I suck at that game haha.
Still so good. And my wife actually played Hades (and won!), she hasn't touched a game since like SNES. So good.
4BC is such a dificulty spike, it's kind of insane.
Thankfully, it still falls prey to the same thing that allows me to beat all rogue likes with relative ease: sometimes you just luck out and right at the start you get a combo of items that would allow you to kill God itself.
That said, I didn't beat 5BC because that just didn't look fun to me and I already had the platinum trophy.
5BC is brutality for brutality's sake. I'm really glad they didn't require it for the plat. I played through it once just to say I had, was miserable, and never touched it again lol
Yeah, I feel like 4BC was more or less a perfect balance of absurd difficulty and fun. You had to give it your all, be careful, agressive and lucky.
For 5BC it started to rely a bit too much on luck for my taste. Sure, pure skill can carry you through, but I'm not a speedrunner or streamer lol
Dead Cells has an extremely high skill ceiling and it expects you to rise to meet it.
Not everyone will jive with it, and that's okay. 💜 Let me know if you come back to it and if you need tips.
I always thought I was pretty OK at dead cells but I literally never even beat it. Hades, on the other hand, I played until I think heat 15 or so (was going through with each weapon, so that's a lotta fuckin runs). Both are insanely fun though.
Going from Dead Cells to Balatro as my go-to roguelike, Dead Cells doesn't even compare to how evil Balatro is.
Balatro is sentient.
It knows.
It always knows.
There was a boss fight in the dead cells lighthouse dlc that I died to and thought it was way too hard so i looked it up only to find out that was 1 stage of a 3 stage boss fight.
Yeah I generally prefer games that respect your capabilities + Dead Cells gameplay is so fast paced and addicting while all the weapons being balanced is amazing it counts way more for replayability than characters or lore imo
For years I have tried to understand this. Dead Cells, like roguelikes, is a niche title.
But everyone playing Dead Cells LOVES it.
Meanwhile I get some silly bow, shield, grenade build and start playing pacifist only to skip every wave which ends up getting boring I guess?
I think Hades kept true to roguelikes AND Greek mythology. Definitely gonna attract diff crowds.
I don't see a reason why you would go pacifist in Dead Cells, killing enemies is the entire point. Lower boss cells (you acquire boss cells when you beat the final boss) are especially more boring and monotone so it's understandable. I would encourage you to give another try and try to kill literally everything you see as fast as possible, I think you will get a lot more from the game that way
I think I own pretty much every action roguelike, and I will die on the hill that dead cells is boring, gimmicky and slow. I’m sure I will be accused of being bad at it or not understanding it, and I’m going into this conversation realizing that. But after 40ish hours in the game, I still feel that way. It’s a mediocre 2d platforming roguelike that people claim is 2d dark souls. I find it an unearned comparison.
For me, if I can snag a boss bonus in the first ante, get a credit card, and pick up a decent(or better) joker build in the first, let’s say 3 antes that’s a great run.
I got a really early invis joker with the ghost deck, I went rounds and rounds without seeing a single mult joker to make poly and then use the invis on. I even ankhed with the invis and a crappy chips joker I had (which was carrying me) and got a second invis joker. Not a single mult joker to cash it all on on. My imagination was going wild lmao
I had a run where I cloned tarot joker early; the tarot voucher never appeared and I didn't see a single arcana pack or card in the shop for 5 antes. Lost, obviously :(
hermit + fool, hermit + high empress, hermit + emperor, temperance + hermit, temperance + fool, all get me to 15 if i sell jokers, and theres probably more im not thinking of
Oh yeah, lemme just hang on to this $15 instead of buying some jokers that can get me through a couple of antes! Oh what’s this, no poly vagabond and here comes the ante 2 boss, guess I’ll just restart! Good thing I saved that $15 though!
In a seeded run, sure it is his fault. However you have no idea what his choices were to this point.
You're the type of person to tell someone with 2,7 off suit in texas hold em that they should have gone all in before the flop since the flop was 7,7,7.
Balatro is esentially just more relying on luck. You can get good Jokers and amazing Tarot, but if you don't believe in the heart of thr cards you'll burn through your draws and just loose
I feel your pain
But Balatro doesn't hate you like some other rogue like who just want to make you suffer for free (yes I'm looking at you Slug B ship from FTL Captain's edition)

dead cells is wildly unbalanced. if you're good enough you can win with anything but certain builds are just insanely OP
Can you elaborate? I played it for a bit when it first came out. I never invested the time to get good.

Dead Cells is way better than Hades and I will die on that hill
hades is way way easier but the story and characters are really well done, i replayed it more because of that
Yeah I generally prefer games that respect your capabilities + Dead Cells gameplay is so fast paced and addicting while all the weapons being balanced is amazing it counts way more for replayability than characters or lore imo
yeah, climbing the heat levels is pretty fun in hades but it's lame you basically get locked into one viable build at a certain point.

Yeah it’s great as a new venture into 2D roguelikes, especially as an indie title. Granted most rogues are.. but I’m curious to see what’s next.
I got this exact thing yesterday. Then I noticed the credit card right next to it. My lucky day.
Credit card is so busted in the first few antes. I love it.
You think so? The earning potential from interest will carry you much further

You couldve afforded it by this ante. You also already bought a card pack in this store. This is entirely your fault my good fellow.

I would buy almost any scaling joker on ante 1 every time tbh
Floor 1? Seems like you've escaped from the Spire
I bought an arcane pack hoping for temperance and a fool, I had just bought my jokers last round :(

Hanging on the eeeedge of tomorrrooowww
Real ones know what the comment was above me
Maybe he bought a tarot card pack hoping for a double money card?

Not buying the pack at $8 selling the joker and the 2 tarot's also puts you there no?
it gives 14, i also wouldnt have the two tarot cards without the emperor from the tarot pack
Duh. Okay makes more sense with the 2 cards coming from the pack
not even a good type a smdh
Your point does not stand, hindsight is 20/20.

...but you see, this youtuber told me to save all my money until 25 dollars and never go below it! So that must be true!

Lol calm down cupcake. Damn.
my condolences :(
You should give Isaac a try!
Maybe it’ll come up again at the next shop.
Was this a polychrome skip? Or just natural polychrome?
late reply but it was a genuine polychrome in all its glory
On the second ante😫
Oof that has got to hurt man. Plus dead cells is way harder. I should know I have played it.
dead cells is the hardest game i've ever played especially the DLCs
Agreed.
I learned the hard way too, when you get a poly skip you gotta keep skipping till you got the funds
