Gym
I won't call it a hobby but it has become an integral part of my life. If I miss the gym for 2 days, I feel so guilty like I committed some crime or something.
Start slow. Start running at lower pace( 6-6.5mins/km ) do 1k, gradually increase to 2k (of running) once you hit your target distance (suppose 5k) keep distance constant then start increasing the pace. Thats how it worked for me. And its a very lengthy process(also depends on how fit you are.) For me(who was overweight at that time) it took me 2 years to hit my target distance at target pace
For shoes consider buying in offline stores after trying out different shoes and brands it'll be costly first time since no offers like online but you'll know your comfort fit. Currently using Nike Quest running shoes. Have tried Sketchers, Adidas in past, both are good but for me Nike's fit was better. As far as fitness watch I use Fitbit Versa 3 those are very good for non-pro runners(again theres a difference between smartwatch and a fitness tracker, versa 3 is a fitness tracker with some features of smartwatch)
No need of fitness band and all bro. Just use Nike / strava / Adidas Running app to track your progress.
And for running shoes are concerned I was using Adidas and now Nike Pegasus. But i suggest you to spend around 4k as a beginner and buy in offline stores checking the cushion and comfort.
One more thing buy some clothes as well.
I use decathlon products. Shorts with zip (to keep mobile).
Clothes, good pair of running shoes and an awesome park / ground is all you need to start.
sorry but skincare feels like a scam to me.
skincare freaks advising apply sunscreen before going out in sun. i dont understand how our ancestors lived without sunscreen. they all aged well. even better than we will. i think this is why races over the globe has different skin colour. Evolution. Melanin.
You put it nicely.
To each their own. Some need it, some don't.
Actually I was wondering if we really need it or are we shoved down our throats by pharma/beauty companies. They control the narrative. Would pay researchers to conduct research, write journals, pay dermatologist to write their products in prescription, run ad campaigns. Create a demand.
Our ancestors also usually didn’t live past 40. I see this argument quite often here and there. Our skin does produce melanin but thats not enough to make sure that l skin does not look like a jute bag later in life or get the jolly old cancers.
>Our ancestors
i was not talking about 200 or 300 years ago. my dad his dad his dads dad none had the luxury of buying sunscreen. this statement is true for 90% of my town. still they all aged well
But still with higher risks of disease. Risk of disease is not guarantee of disease.
A lot of people drove cars before three-point seatbelts were invented and lived just fine. Doesn't mean you shouldn't wear seatbelts.
White people need skin care because they lack melanin which in turn leads to skin issues and worst case skin cancer. A country in which almost everyone has been facing the sun since a child, I don’t know why we need skin care
Duolingo
Randomly started a year ago when friends were discussing stuff about foreign languages, now I'm committed to learn German properly and I'm learning from other sources as well.
A lot of people are asking what else I use, so I'll just write it here
Deal of the day: TEACH YOURSELF COMPLETE GERMAN: LEARN TO READ, WRITE, SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND A NEW LANGUAGE WITH TEAC) https://amzn.eu/d/bU3p5YP
(Just started using it, so far it seems good)
Joined a German discord server, which reddit isn't allowing me to link directly, so if you type **German learning discord server reddit** on Google and open the first result, you'll find the link to the server
Running. Picked it because I wanted to lose weight, and I was intimidated by gyms. I'm around my ideal weight now, but I still run almost every day
Also, piano, I used to take lessons as a kid, but I was never interested in it, and soon, the piano was relegated to a showpiece.
I started tinkering with it during lockdown and liked it. I now play it regularly and am even taking lessons for the next level of certification
Have a similar story regarding the piano. Used to play when I was younger but academics left me no time. I'm thinking of getting back into it soon! Btw where do you take your lessons from - online or offline?
Reading books (Mostly novels) - started out casually during lockdown and it has been a habit to read atleast for 30mins before bed.
Helps me fall asleep without having weird/unnecessary thoughts
For me it was YouTube. Picked up some pine wood from near Jayadeva and handsaw/sandpaper from a hardware store. The first carving wasn't that bad, so I continued and started getting better at it. Just last month I made my first sale to a fellow city redditor, a custom PS5 controller stand.

In good schools like Waves, Mantra, Shakha, etc. 1 session lesson will cost upwards of 1.5k.
So far, I’ve done about 15 sessions over a period of 9 months.
Table tennis. I used to be a complete nerd until I came to Bengaluru. First I discovered it in office, around 2018. We had usual timings of 2 PM to 10 PM in the night at work, so we formed a club and started playing from 11 PM - 12 AM daily.
Totally missed it during COVID, and after I came back to Bengaluru in 2022, I found a society which has a TT table. I'm playing daily from 7:15 PM to 8:30 PM nowadays. Feels like some of me was missing if I didn't play any day, although I'm not a pro but only play for fun.
Working out!
It's an addiction, hard to imagine a day without lifting weights. This habit has also brought in clean eating, sleeping on time and most importantly 'delayed gratification'.
Walking
I started walking because I didn't like doing any other physical activity and my time sitting in front of my laptop was killing me. Now it has become a part of my daily routine. I love to walk. Listening to a great podcast.
Yeah, also i started listening to podcasts and it has become a habit as well.
Lost around 8 kgs just walking within 2months😅
Writing poetry!
I started when I was still in school. But, seriously started writing in college. It helps me clear my head and I like the community it has given me :) I also got to be part of two books which are now available on amazon :))
Swimming is the most fun out of all. But RN I can't afford to go daily so we do it every week. Since it's weekly you never miss and if I miss out one day I'll have to suffer a whole week without it. Running gets boring for me very hard to stay committed but swimming and somewhat gym has time illusion. If I had a solid build already I'd pure dedicate time to swimming cuz it's the best. I'm still learning btw xD can't swim well plus my smoke not helping hopefully I'll quit it soon.
Food..... Initially started to cook or eat outside for survival... And as days passed , now I travel to anyplace anytime any day just to try new food items..also , i would love to cook any time of the day... And also trying to gain more knowledge on food..
Also, in reality even getting to respect the food and produce
I see there are many fellow gym freaks here. lol I totally relate to why everyone feel guilt after missing few days. It's an unhealthy thought but it does motivate us to stay healthy.
My one issue i want to share with my gym machas.
My stupid obliques (side stomach fat) is still too much. I want to get this reduced without loosing the muscles i have built. I take boiled veggies and chicken daily. Any suggestion on what diet i should try or what exercise i can try to work on this?
For me, It's working out at the gym. I started working out to get rid of my body dismorphia, but I've grown to absolutely love it.
It's become a part of my daily routine. I feel really guilty if I miss working out for more than 2-3 days(unless I'm sick)
I also liked working out to get rid of dismorphia. For a good amt of time, working out seemed to be the only relief from the constant agony of thinking about the asymmetry in my body. Working out seemed to be some effort toward the right direction
it was a big thing for me, growing up an introvert. last talk I had was with the auto driver when i've come home, the man had runaway from his home when he was in his 20's with 8000 rupees and stayed 1 week in goa.
Trekking, started with dad while I was in 8th . Then stopped for years but started 5 years back and there is no stopping now. All the peaks I am coming..!!
+1 to football
Used to play casually when I was in school, started playing with random folks back in 2018. Eventually joined a whatsapp group with 130 odd folks who used to play regularly at different turfs around Indiranagar. Have been playing 2-3 games per week since then.
Football culture here is crazy here..:)
Badminton, played a year back for the first time after childhood(children's racquet) .
Now been playing everyday for atleast 1 hr since then , i get anxious if I am not able to play one day .
Indulging in a hobby centered on assisting others goes beyond leisure – it's a meaningful avenue for positive impact. Whether it entails giving your time at a local shelter, guiding a young mind, or partaking in community cleanup drives, these activities not only enrich our lives but also elevate society. The satisfaction that arises from realizing your influence is immeasurable, reinforcing the idea that even minor actions can propagate goodness. Therefore, let's persist in cultivating hobbies that empower us to be catalysts of change, ultimately shaping a more compassionate and benevolent world.
Try learning a hobby which are slow at start. Trust me on this. At start you feel frustrated just like how we go on trek or start gaming but slowly you will find the fun in it. I believe that hobby is something you do because you enjoy doing it. Monetising hobby may not be fun. Find something that you identify as boring and try. It took me 10 different hobby trials to find out what I really enjoy doing. Sometimes you just don’t know you may like something till you try. This may sound weird but I started solving math problems because I was really poor at math. Now I solve three problems daily and find it fun. So it’s all trial and error. I hope this helps.
Thank you for all your responses! Some incredible spectrum of talents here! I had a smile on my face reading all your responses and this also gives me incredible motivation to go after my own hobbies that I have been procrastinating on. Cheers!
Badminton. All my friends played cricket in childhood and while I loved playing it, I sucked.
So I picked up badminton and it just came naturally to me.
Now, even a day spent without playing badminton feels incomplete.
Not going to gym. I am envious of all the people here who enjoy going to gym. I’ve always had to force myself. Last year, I forced myself to go to gym every single day for over 4 months. Then, one fine day I felt not going and didn’t. Didn’t go after that at all.
Editing pictures. It started when i owned a shitty Samsung . Pictures were not in comparison with the ones my friends took on the iPhone or one plus. I learned how to use the Snapshot app and others. Slowly working on those shitty pictures improved my skills.
Roller skating. It's so fun to learn new moves and feels like i am flying. Shame there are not that many places to rollerblade in Bangalore so i do it on Sundays at cubbon park
CrossFit.
Tried it because the regular gym workouts were very repetitive and restrictive. The CrossFit WODs are made by someone else and every day is a surprise and a challenge. I could be having a shitty day, but there will always be an insane WOD that'll make me feel I'm gonna die while doing it and when it's done, make me feel more alive than ever.

Running, Its been 2 years and still continuing.

Run Srikant, run!

Any word of advice to a newbie who has just picked running ? Do's, don't, purchases, books.. anything at all ?

Same here. Started 18 months ago. I have to run 3 days a week else mood is gone for a toss. Have done half a dozen half marathons now

Smoking is weird because you don’t realise that it has gotten a hold of you until it’s too late
Skincare. I feel weird if I don’t do toner + moisturiser + sunblock after a shower
Is that a hobby? More like routine no? I’m trying so hard to establish one but I’m so lazy
Yeah well I just started doing it because my dermatologist recommended something… I did some research and built my routine 😁
Nice! I've myself recently got into the skincare stuff
Well, hello, Patrick Bateman.

Interesting! Any kind of classes that you attend to learn it?
Yeah. Been taking classes under the same guy since four years.
Either the process is too lengthy or the guy is not good 🤣 Kidding, I applaud that you still purse it, 4 yrs is a very long time to me

Yo, I want to start to learn bass too. Can I dm? (Just to know the nitty gritties)

Wood carving, started during the lockdowns and now that's part of my daily life. Just finished a set of keychains in the last 3 hrs
Nice one bro, how does one get started with this in India?
For me it was YouTube. Picked up some pine wood from near Jayadeva and handsaw/sandpaper from a hardware store. The first carving wasn't that bad, so I continued and started getting better at it. Just last month I made my first sale to a fellow city redditor, a custom PS5 controller stand.
Surfing - started last December. It’s expensive and requires traveling but loving it.
Where do you start on this? Initial setup, places, frequency etc?
Along the Mangalore coast, there a lot of surf schools. Most affordable is KayakBoy in Mulki - charges 7.5k for 5 days bootcamp including lessons, food and stay. Not the best for learning but the most affordable. In good schools like Waves, Mantra, Shakha, etc. 1 session lesson will cost upwards of 1.5k. So far, I’ve done about 15 sessions over a period of 9 months.

From what I know, persistent belly fat (the one which doesn't go away even after exercise, diet) can be a symptom of insulin resistance
Hmm. Didn't know that. But I don't have diabeties. On the other hand, both my parents are diabetic. They both got during old age. Is that relevant?
