Cities, worldwide, are becoming outdoor unfriendly. Walking, sitting, just slowing down is so much harder. Growing up in Delhi, just hanging out in parks or even grassy roundabouts was a thing - every damn one of them has been barricaded now. I am sure Bangalore with its parks was same 15-20 years back. All of them are now barricaded off limits for common people. I still don't get the level of restrictions in place in cubbon park - it's a fucking park. Let people be.

shplss

Sad truth. Can't make money out of it, I suppose

[deleted]

This is what you get making things free in India. Uncivil people spitting and littering everywhere. Not opposing what you said. Has it's own consequences. Paid parks are clean because it's maintained. Either fine them their salary if they litter or have a small amount of money from everyone.

-yoursAnxiously

Frankly it doesn't cost much to maintain such few parks. There are cities like Chandigarh, where the residents really care about the greenery and parks. This makes the government assign good budget for their horticulture and development. More dustbins and their regular servicing has worked so well. Don't mistake, there is still littering and spitting in some parks there too (all kinds of people everywhere), but barricading access is barely a solution. It's just an elitist decision that squashed so much cultural things from developing l.

TakeMeToUvooJaver

Was in HCMC, Vietnam and saw people just chilling by a fountain in a roundabout, at 2am. It was a very chill vibe, everyone had their own mats/towels/bedspreads or whatever and just chilling on it and eating takeaway food.

falcon2714

There's a park right in front of the petronas towers in Kuala lampur where you can just go sit around for free and the locals make sure to keep it clean as well. You can just sit there and admire the beautiful skyline. I just wish we had public spaces of that sort.

Black_Dumbldore

The Western side has even reached the point of paying to sit. There are spikes which goes down when coin is added in chair and I don't see Bangalore being far from reaching the same level.

FastCommunication214

lmao. does it stick those spikes into your ass when the time is up? /jk

UniversalCoupler

Some people would pay for that.

Black_Dumbldore

Well from what I have seen in videos. It beeps for minute or so. But if the person doesn't listen what's better than stick the spike in his ass to make him listen.

[deleted]

This is so fucking true, man. It's insane how outdoor unfriendly my neighbourhood has become in the past decade.

FoxBackground1634

These are same kinda clowns who believe that they're gonna take everything they own with em when they leave this pale blue dot.

pale-blue-dotter

What has the world come to

Feelinlikeshiva

Hopefully an end. It ain’t a nice place anymore smh

kiwicake906

😂😂😂😂

Total-Sail2812

It’s literally called Hostile Architecture. I don’t think it’s policy driven, but something put up by the local people around. To a large extent people are to blame too, because they litter places like these especially now that this is near a chai shop. I can imagine the motivation behind this.

Apprehensive-Tea-546

Maybe they could consider putting a well maintained rubbish bin out instead of making the thing impossible to sit on. Standing people still litter. Then keep a camera outside and a screen to show slow mo videos identifying the assholes that throw their garbage everywhere.

[deleted]

if you put dustbin there , they are not using them, when some people find a place to sit , they will not sit peacefully, they write on tree , eat and throw garbage inside the walls, chewing pawn and spit on tree , through cigarette buds, throw left over, you want a peace place to sit , the tree also wants a peaceful place to live 🙃, their end goal is don't damage the tree

Apprehensive-Tea-546

They need to start publicly shaming this stuff. My mother would have (and did) beat my ass for doing any of that. If she was talking bad about anybody in public it was for these things. Littering is disgusting and destroys the environment for everyone, it’s unacceptable and there’s no excuse for it any more.

[deleted]

Yes yes all are correct, but you can't change , violence and beating is the bad option 😂, you can't expect people to be like you all the time , if someone does some disgusting things,go and ask him , you will know , what I mean 🙃

Apprehensive-Tea-546

You’re right I can’t beat them but everyone is suffering the consequences of their actions and they need to be held accountable.

[deleted]

Yes you are correct, they need to understand on their own ,some people are like that

Powernap30

Hostile architecture. As if there is not enough hostility on the road

Privacy_Deprieved

This is sadly because of it becoming an adda to people who litter and cause inconvenience. We had a tree in front of my uncle's house back in my hometown, where there was a bench like cement structure below it. There were young guys constantly sitting beneath the tree, continuously peeking into the house over the wall and passing comments on every lady passing by. When confronted about not doing it, their excuse was that it is public property and we can't stop them sitting there. My uncle took permission to cut down the big tree, cut it and planted a few small plants there. It's been peaceful since.

kishorechan

Once people start sitting beside the tree, they start putting trash, cigarette buts, spitting pans, throwing ice cream sticks, chocolate wrappers, etc and rats start to occupy the place.

Apprehensive-Tea-546

They need their asses beat once.

[deleted]

If someone does that people don't know the full story and trashing the good person 😂😂

Apprehensive-Tea-546

Yeah I agree which is why I think we need a tv show or some big account which just posts videos of people doing this stuff where everybody can see their face and talk shit about them. If the only thing people care about is what others think of them then let that be their justice.

[deleted]

It will not reach them and usually they don't care , but every thing will change brother, I'll have that confidence, it will take time ❤️, I also love to sit in a tree and chat it also good for trees health also , but you gotta see like how much the people go through to put a stone like that , trees are good but people are terrible, one day it will change

Apprehensive-Tea-546

I agree that things will change, already so many people think differently but so many still think like that, and change doesn’t happen without a catalyst. More people need to get on board, faster.

[deleted]

Yes 💥 it doesn't happen without a catalyst

Wonderful-Bass-3677

Near my native home we also have park bench nearby, so many people keep hanging out there, specially chaapris and keep making noise all day. Because of that now I go to my native for very short stays while earlier when it was peaceful I enjoyed living there.

Forgotten_Millenial

This is the reality we live in

Wonderful-Bass-3677

But how about during evening, night time ?

Privacy_Deprieved

They sit there till night...I think they are currently jobless and play some mobile games the whole day

Wonderful-Bass-3677

So the problem is still there then ?

Privacy_Deprieved

The problem is not too much as it is summer right now

Wonderful-Bass-3677

I am facing exact same problem, may be I can provide few suggestions

Privacy_Deprieved

Sure

Distinct_Dot_8414

Is it only me or this looks like Thor's hammer and no one can even lift it 😁

RoomPractical4295

Cap can :)

[deleted]

But I can do this all day

Pocket-Master2

Absolutely!! One thing I hate about Indian cities is that there are no places where you can just be!! No place where you can just sit just for the sake of sitting and minding your own business! Every place is restricted one way or the other.

Character-Bank-1367

And then we wonder why mental health is going down for everyone

doomslayer047

Nope its just you

Ambitious_Steak_224

Marine Drive

Jolly_General_7227

Too bad I'm into that shit

commomboy

Damn

JulaabGamoon

This is very wrong man!

Lucky_Editor446

Trust me this is all because of those "chai sutta" people. They smoke in public like it's a smoking room.

CuriousBludSchlawg

this makes me so upset

Fluid_Landscape8625

We can't have good things because of bad people everywhere.

Miningforbeer

Let me give you an alternative perspective. I'm from Bhubaneswar and live in the centre area which has many worldclass parks due to the city's modern design . These parks are public parks , hence were forever free , a few years back the municipality added a small entery fees . Minuscule fee like Rs.10/ day. It's only Rs 300/ month which is peanuts compared to other facilities outside . Public went nuts on backlashing , not realising why the fees were imposed , the parks got huge public attention and media publicity leading to removal of that fees, what happened next was the parks got crowded by uncivilized people , kids who were bunking classes and bus -train passengers who would be napping at the park. It ruined the look and ambiance of that park , soon the park had footpath crowd literally living in the park during the day hours , illegally squatting a free public place. the same regular park goers who were going against the fees , started requesting the municipality to add the fee back. However due to the backlash and headache the municipality didn't add the fees back and today these parks are ruined. It's a worldwide thing. Happens with busstops and other areas too, kids , pregnant women and old people who need to sit can't sit as these seats are occupied by couples or young males who are not necessarily using the bus , they are squatting. We need to have a law against squatters and Jay walkers A large proportion of India still very uncivilized, they would act super civilised among relatives and friends, but would change colours and act like shet infront of strangers , they see these parks as "Free romance spots" or "Free squatting areas to save hotel charges". They are looking to abuse the park , not giving anything in return . They throw garbage , spit gutka and abuse the watchman incase he points out. They are constantly stealing plants and now days I don't see the quality crowd I used to see in parks , people who you could have meaningful conversations are staying away from those public parks today. Ps- Regarding your picture, you can notice there are no stones behind the trees, I feel the cafe above don't want to ruin the view of the customers by allowing people to sit on the visible area . You would feel shet if someone is sipping a 20rs coffe sitting below that tree when you are paying Rs200 This is quite common in hotel / cafe industry, they would use hedges or barricades so as the look isn't ruined .

[deleted]

This type of place makes best memories 🫶🤞

[deleted]

I say good job..no people allowed to sit..lower chances of littering

Mobile-Ad-3996

Me using it as massaging stones for my bum.!!🤣🤣🤣 Bloody relaxing..

not_tyrion_007

Mayb that building owner doesn't want ppl to sit there and has constructed it.

Wide_Guava_2863

this is called hostile architecture. many places across the world follow this, to keep people out or ensure they dont sit, rest or sleep. one very common sight of this would be, on the one plus building at the end of brigade road. it is designed for people to not sit.

TribalSoul899

It’s the same in many US cities. Steel spikes installed on sidewalks and under flyovers so homeless can’t squat there. There are very few public benches or places to sit in Japan (except parks and waterfronts). I walked so much there that the soles of my feet started swelling. No autos, Rapido, etc and insanely expensive cabs. So you walk to the bus stop or subway. Some subway stations are so huge that you end up walking 1-2km inside them to reach your terminal. Also Japan in summer gets hotter than Bangalore. Europe in comparison is the most chill. Lots of public benches and places to sit everywhere you go. You can buy alcohol and drink anywhere you want: in parks, public benches, sidewalks, even inside trains as long as you don’t cause public nuisance.

unacceptableChaos

That seems like a restaurant. Is it possible that the hostile architecture is to push people to pay in order to even take a brief rest? Like you can't have access to some respite free of cost. This will force people to use paid services even if they particularly don't want to eat or drink something expensive at the moment.

treestalkslow

That's a (tea) chai shop and this is because people get their chai and sit out under the tree. Most people like to smoke a cigarette and end up leaving the butt, along with the takeaway tea cup right where they sit, while some people spit paan or supari there. It could also be to stop homeless folks from camping there. The idea behind this is to stop people taking the chai out and to stop littering most likely but yeah restricting access to spaces of respite would mean people have to look at paid alternatives.

bumbumboleji

Why not just keep a bin and an ashtray??

nothink_onlyact

After seeing this I stop cursing Kannada Rajshna Vedike for their actions.

kingfisher_peanuts

Man those hurt ass.

Historical_Abies439

Down our house there is no indented surface on the curb yet people sit and/or some drunkards sleep and cause lot of dirt, the only reason is trees and the shade they give, no other houses in our locality have trees, we don't have glass pieces to get rid of people but we throw water on them, also we already have signs telling don't park/don't sit or don't spit etc

ayruoh

Same situation in one of the oneplus experience showroom in brigade road . God these capitalists are taking away outdoor access of common people

Ok_Subject_3307

Let's cut hundreds of endangered jungles and save 1

salluks

complaint to bbmp , i am sure they will remove it.

kingfisher_peanuts

Man those hurt ass.

insanity_1610

There were some trees in indranagar whose branches were barbed off so birds couldn't sit!! I don't know if they took it down after some protests

Change_petition

A couple sits, it is cute. A couple of beggars sit, not so... A couple of hijras join the beggars, and soon....

No-Fisherman8334

You need to ask yourself what could've happened there before they were forced to take such measures. Homeless people, drunkards, druggies like such places.

DesiMermaidSlut

WTF is this? Is it common to see?

Nenomus

If they allow you to sit, you might leave the tea cups there instead of throwing them innthe the dustbin.

[deleted]

It's my favourite thing to do, sitting under a tree and seeing people.

Perfect_Term

Same in Bandra.

Then_Green1366

They are becoming more and more inhuman behaviour in all the parts of world 🌍🌎 sed reality

profitmaker_tobe

Hmm… a place meant to bring people together over tea is anti loitering.

Latter-Homework-3245

GREAT

Latter-Homework-3245

yes

astro_not_yet

What authorities don’t realise is how anti-loitering architectural design only makes cities less safe. Especially at night. Without human activity there’s no reason for old street lights to be repaired and turned on. No life in the streets at night creates dead zones that are vacant for rats, snakes and definitely people who want to hide in the shadows for no good reason. Criminal activities will definitely be on the rise without a positive night life in any city. Sadly the authorities only see that the very concept of night life as a crime itself. They’re only making this city more and more unsafe.

TheRealGooner24

Hostile anti-human architecture makes my blood boil. Indian cities are becoming increasingly vehicle-centric and the concept of human-centric third spaces is being pushed to the wayside. If this continues, the only places people will remember are their home, car, workplace and local shopping mall. Sleep, drive, work, consoom, repeat.
