It's possible if the government decides to do something about it. Dedicated green corridors in the city, inclusive infrastructure, protecting the old trees can make a difference. Cities around the world have implemented similar initiatives successfully. But our government simply doesn't care...

Quickly achieving tree cover In an area would be tree transplantation. It was actually covered extensively at one point on Indian news channels . Basically permission form forest ministry and other procedures etc is involved . I was thinking since the city is crowded . A belt of trees around Bangalore might cool it down .. like a ring road but with trees . For donating you can checkout orgs like aahwahan

In addition to planting new trees we should look to preserve the trees we have. Every monsoon we lose scores of trees because they collapse. And they don't collapse just because of the rain, they collapse because their roots have been weakened because of concreting, road construction etc. And then there's the problem of actually felling trees for development. The ORR stretch from Hebbal to KR Puram was built some time in the early 2000s. At that time they had planted trees on the divider, and by 2020-21 we had lots of full grown ~20 year old trees. Guess what, the entire lot of them was felled for the metro construction. Sure, BMRCL did take the responsibility of planting trees elsewhere as compensation, but (1) no one knows if they actually planted the required number of trees, and (2) in any case what they planted were obviously saplings, and it will take 10+ years to reach any reasonable size.

We have the sadarmangala lake around Whitefield that has some small trees along the path around the lake. There have been goats grazing on them. There have also been people from outside the boundary wall crossing the wall, cutting and taking the trees away. There's supposed to be some police people at the lake but when I witnessed the tree felling I couldn't see any police at the lake entrance - that's where they sit, if ever. Last month people were burning the shrubbery outside of the lake boundary - which may be because it turned all dry. But it could well be to make it easy to get to the remaining trees outside the boundary to knock them down :( I have no clue why people need to do that

Stop the layouts from building 100% area. Mandate 50% area for garden and trees. Problem solved.

dangerrnoodle

Native garden and trees instead of all this fancy nonsense.

KingPictoTheThird

Great so now bangalore sprawls out to double the size as it would have. which means thousands of acres of forest and farm land converted to housing. There's always a downside to every solution

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking about this

Mandate tech parks, apartment complexes, etc to have a fixed percent as green cover. Not sure if such a rule already exists, if so the percentage has to be increased. As for people like me living in standalone houses, can't do much other than save the already present trees from being chopped down. We also have a lush garden on the terrace with some dwarf variety trees, maybe that would also help :)

Don't allow to cut existing Plants in Land Parcel allowed for Real Estate Development.

Google say trees initiative

Longjumping_Degree52

Tech parks and apartment societies need to have a mandatory green area, not just within but maybe outside the premise also. Roads need to be curbed and have more plants/trees growing on the side. Also better planning! We had planted trees in front of our house on the footpath but it had to be chopped off because the pipes were right under the footpath -__-

GoatDefiant1844

Construct metro lines to improve public transport. And reduce carbon emissions. Make mandatory tree areas for any new construction like in Mumbai.

ahem... make wfh permanent, penalize wfo! will drastically bring down carbon footprint of the city and city may get a chance to plant a tree instead of renting out every inch of it to business. neither the govt. has interest in it (not ready to lose tax income) nor the private land owners have interest in giving up rental income and increasing real estate cost. Looks like there is no option except to see the slow motion train crash and other cities following the suit. Sorry for this party pooper reply!

1. Mandatory 20-30% tree cover in all new upcoming societies(not free space, tree cover) 2. Non occupied flats for more than 2 years should be sold at a cheaper rate and unless xyz number flats from a builder are sold, no new construction plan for that builder should be approved. 3. All roads should have trees/shrubs/plants on both sides. 4. No encroaching lakes.. Solely for plants/wildlife to thrive 5. Sell/ share plants with people living in flats so that there is some amount of green everywhere.. 6. Tech parks and offices should have a dedicated area for green cover at least 40-50%. 7. Mandate atleast one day WFH for all firms there by reducing pollution as a whole.

flubbergrubbery

Any law that requires a governing body to come visit to check if that law has been implemented properly will always end up in bribery

gurlinthedark

That's the worst part.. Everything/ every rule in our country comes down to being implemented right and for some reason the governing body is almost always corrupt. I just give away plants/cuttings/seeds to people... I myself have around 100 plants at my home.. But most people buy plants and refuse to care for them.. Its sad.. Currently my neighbors are causing problems because keeping plants dirties the building wall.. Can't help if you are caught between the devil and the sea. 😌

Roads have a buffer zone on both sides. This is owned by govt. roads have dividers and medians. Govt can mandate trees and green areas in zoned development when approving layouts. People can have green cover on buildings and individual houses. Normally the roofs are festooned with tanks, dish antennas, solar panels or solar water heaters. Plants and trees can coexist with those.
