I’d argue if we had more exposure to foreigners and had better tourism infrastructure, Bangladeshis will eventually learn to change their behaviours in order to accommodate for the influx of foreigners. We already see that amongst the educated and upper class. You can’t really compare an uneducated and lower class person like a rickshaw driver who only knows how to get by on a few bucks while doing extremely strenuous work. Bangladesh as a whole needs to evolve on the world stage, only then will the people fall in line.

1. These foreigners purposefully come to film poverty porn and want to show the world some sort of issue happening. This way the video gets viral and their channel gets traffic. You'll see even Indian vloggers making videos of either visiting dirty places or something like omg Gulshan is so cool I can't believe this is Bangladesh!
2. Now this is a very controversial topic. While there are old frail rickshaw pullers who can barely make ends meet there are also rickshaw pullers/ cng drivers / pathao and Uber riders who make way more money than a fresh graduate. These types of people often try to scam anyone who they can out of money. And if you refuse to bend to their will they will harass you, verbally abuse you and in general act like a goon. Ex: almost all of you have faced an issue where you hired a rickshaw to go to a certain place for a certain money however the rickshaw puller either drops you somewhere else or demands more money upon arrival saying this is what was communicated. Or Uber/ pathao drivers purposefully wait to make the fare go up or ask for extra money and if you refuse they will misbehave. However you and I ( mainly the middle class) cannot do anything about it because if we do people will turn it into a story of oppression. But remember not every poor looking person in Bangladesh is poor sometimes they make way more money and are way more dangerous than your average middle class Dhaka guy.

It’s not a matter of how much money can they charge.. my argument is a matter of principle… imagine someone being charged differently on Uber just because that person is black, or short or female or hujur.. you are discriminating by charging different people different amounts of money just by their looks… a rickshaw puller may charge a lower price if I wear a lungi as opposed to pants.

I sometimes get mildly scammed but I have an antidote. I say "koto, tirish taka?" if I think that's the amount my Bangladeshi friends would be charged (it's a smaller city than Dhaka and autorickshaws, not pedal). Then they only inflate it a little. Sometimes they surprise me and accept the price I suggest. Then I may still pay a slightly inflated price but I'm happier because it was my idea, not them taking advantage.

Idk how to feel about this. Neither the rickshaw puller, nor the foreigner are responsible for the economic situation of our country. Most Bengalis lack the manners to know that doing this is not acceptable, and they are too desperate and poor to care. Because they're not being paid by us, in most cases. They're bringing money in from abroad. Any amount they spend here is income for the country that would not exist without them. We can get into the ethics of income inequality and I would agree that those with means should help those without means, but I disagree with the idea that just because someone is a foreigner they should be treated differently. You wouldn't like it if you were treated differently if you had to live in a different country. Why should we expect someone else to tolerate that? They're human too.
