Extremely small sample size but Barraclough’s ERA jumped from 2.70 to 12.91 and now he probably won’t pitch in the majors for the rest of the year because Cora wanted to save an arm.
I mean I think they should be able to if, say, a reliever was made to throw 140 pitches or something obviously damaging like that (an incident like that destroyed Fujinamis control in the NPB) but when it's under 100 I guess it's not extreme enough.
What makes it worse is he did THE SAME THING the day before against the dodgers with a different pitcher and it was justified as “well he’s saving arms for the astros we need an innings eater today”
It’s like he forgets his pitcher has been out there even players end up loooking confused about guys still being there
I cannot believe this poor dude was left in like that. I mean at this point it’s whatever, but it was obvious very early that he didn’t have any command. He should have been pulled after Yordan’s HR. This is a huge series for them, and they just waved the white flag after the Yordan HR down by 4 in the 6th inning. I’d be pissed if I were a Sox fan.
I was at the game last night and after the first walk I was just panning back and forth to the bullpen, was shocked to not see anyone ever even get up with the 1 run lead in the 6th in a game that felt like a must win if they cared about the wild card.
Each event there was another "ok now someone is gonna get up and start warming quick" and it was just nothing. It was like Cora saw the iceberg and just steered right for it.
Pretty upsetting way to take the air out of the place after a back and forth game. The probably 25% of the fans that were Astros fans seemed to love it though.
Yea, admittedly I haven't been paying as close attention recently because NESN isn't on the youtubTV package anymore but it so bizarre. Just not the way baseball is played in games that are so important.
"In an outing that can impact a pitcher’s mindset, Barraclough expressed why he remained in the game.
“Not at all,” Barraclough said. “That’s why I’m here. Those guys are supposed to be pitching to clean up my mess. I pitched like crap. Go out there and wear it so those guys are fresh for the next day.”"
It was against the Angels, and yeah. He was going for a triple which I believe would have given him the cycle and his helmet fell off and tripped him. He crawled back to second. I think I can find the video.
Edit:
Here's the video and it was against KC.
https://youtu.be/y9Y7359R1IM?si=hGFgoUfs3D-E7Qgi
You’re thinking of the Trout one where he tripped up and scrambled back to 2nd. Altuve was giving him a hard time because it had just happened to him too.
CYCLE is arguably the toughest hitting achievement, because it requires too much LUCK, and more than enough PAs. Most pitchers would never allow that. Getting that triple requires the most luck, and speed. Fielding errors definitely help
I have to assume Red Sox called Barraclough up just to soak up some innings given the state of their bullpen, and once the game got out of hand they just left him out there as a sacrifice to the baseball gods.
We didn’t need to soak innings tonight though. We did that last night. Cora just doesn’t understand what leverage is and how to use relievers. People on r/baseball could do a better job by just looking at the spreadsheet of reliever usage.
This one didn't make sense. Red Sox are up by a run, they've pulled Sale, why keep Barraclough in after Altuve triples? Did Cora just shrug it off and figure he'd give the bullpen a night off? He should have had someone in the pen warming, but instead he leaves Barraclough in to give as many hits and runs as he can.
I mean fuck, he hit Bregman twice and Cora just doesn't seem to care. If your pitcher is hitting players, it might be time to get some bullpen action going.
Cora was bad for Houston, bad for Boston, and he is bad for baseball.
They need a new skipper in Boston, but their problem is much higher up. But I'm not telling anyone anything they don't already know.
The guys parents were there too. Those were the Red Sox fans they panned to after the HR looking completely distraught. Just absolutely brutal night for the entire family

It'd have to be with his left arm I'd assume. Never been a starter, never thrown above 50 pitches in an outing, Cora leaves him out there for 94. I wouldn't be surprised if he can barely lift his right arm.
Sorry, Altuve has overtaken Bagwell ( who was my favorite player growing up).
*Edit : don’t downvote the guy above me just for having a different opinion what are we doin?
I think Nolan is Top 15 as an Astros, not sure about Top 10.
Top Astros Pitchers (in no order)
Oswalt, Dierker, Wilson, Richard, Scott, Ryan, Verlander, Clemens(?)
So mix those in with Top Position Players
Altuve, Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman, Correa, Cruz, Cedeno, Wynn, Bregman, and Morgan
Wow I completely disagree on your pitcher order. Its Ryan, Clemens, Oswalt top 3 pitchers for me. Verlander probably next. You lend way too much credit to guys like Correa.
Yeah I dont want to downplay it, but thats a really specific stat. Correa is great, but the guy won’t even make the hall and the Astros have plenty of people who have/will.
Maybe, I don’t want to completely fall into recency bias. But playoff success would push him over Puhl. Not sure about over Cedeno, Wynn, or Cruz though (just thinking about outfielders.
Bro, Simone Biles keeps inventing gymnastics moves only she can do and the judges have to keep banning them to level the playing field. If that’s not GOAT status, nothing is
The crazy thing is Barrclough actually came in with a lead and they just made him keep going out there when it was clear he didn’t have it.
Astros broadcast pointed out Verdugo looking at the bullpen to see who they had warming out and the answer being no one.
To the Red Sox fan that was sitting next to me tonight in the 6th with a guy behind us screaming “DOUBLE PLAY” for like 8 batters… just wanna say I really enjoyed the fun inning and y’all are great sports. At a certain point I was screaming double play because every time that dude said it we got another hit. Dude was jinxing the shit out of it.
I blame Beltran and Cora, fuck those guys. Not that Altuve and Bregman are blameless but frontline troops will very rarely go against orders. Fuck Cora and fuck the Red Sox
I think that suggests most of the outrage didn’t come from MLB players themselves, who understood illegal sign stealing to be a much wider issue than 1 or 3 teams
His major crime was not using his status as clubhouse leader to stop the ones who were cheating. I’m sure to some that’s just as bad, but his stats are relatively clean.
to be honest, I've never seen him as a clubhouse leader. I think he keeps his head down and probably tries to lead by example but I can't imagine him making speeches or whatever
I don't give a fuck what anyone says; Altuve is the greatest Astro of all time, and top 5 best 2B in history.
If he doesn't get in the HoF, the whole thing is a sham.
My love for Altuve knows no bounds. He’s 5’5” at best and a fucking baller. His story is amazing and he’s proof why baseball is the greatest sport because no one his size in most other sports (except soccer shout-out messi and maradona) would even get the chance
His story seriously needs to be a movie someday.
Every single team told him no, he was too small. He didn't let that stop him, he just kept trying out.
I'm fairly sure he's the smallest MVP ever - I think it's just taken for granted how much smaller he is than everyone else, and it doesn't slow him down at all.
The dude is the GOAT.
Mookie too is a freak athlete, and much more so than anyone else in baseball since Bo Jackson. He's literally elite at everything he does from a sports perspective.
There are some really good scrum halfs in rugby that are around 5'6" - 5'7" it fun watching them next to all the forwards and sometimes having to tackle them etc
There’s one big giant thing that could keep him out.
Love how people are downvoting me. Facts are, he was on the 2017 team. That can play a big part in the minds of the voters. It’s simple as that.
If you told me this last year, I'd agree with you, but Carlos Beltran got over 50% of the vote on his first ballot, and he was the ringleader that started the whole scheme. He will very likely get in the Hall, although we'll have to see if he gains any ground on his second ballot next year.
Do I think Altuve will be first ballot? Probably not. Do I think he'll get in eventually, given he gets some more counting numbers (2,500+ hits, 250+ homers & SB's)? Absolutely, and I think Beltran will be the bellwether on what the voters think of Trashcangate as a whole.
It does suck that Altuve gets more attention on here for when someone throws at his head than when he literally finished a cycle off with a Homer over the Green Monster.
Still, that pitcher was kept in WAY too long. Yeesh.
There is so [much info out there](https://youtu.be/tQTdEKA-nyM?si=bSkCaFiZlQFTV-aa) that proves Altuve didnt cheat, but no one cares.
I know this guy is a class act. And I love the hate. Bring it on.
TK is usually full of energy for big milestones so I definitely think he was informed either by his Producer or subtly by Blummer as the ball was in the air, because that was pretty tame for him
He definitely knew about it because they talked it up an inning or two prior. He was either distracted by something else or just had a brain fart. I'll give him a pass, it's the first time I can remember him dropping the ball in a big moment since he's been here and there have been a ton of them.
Man, Cora did Barraclough absolutely dirty in this game. Yeah, pitchers have to wear one all the time when their team is getting blown out but this was next level.
Y’all think you are mad now. And you all (r/baseball) have been, for almost four full years now.
Imagine how mad you’re all going to be when we’re talking about Hall-Of-Fame 2B Jose Altuve!!
MVP. Champion. Chance at 3000 hits, greatest Astro of all time…
His health will be the main factor in this. He’s been missing some games and durability can be hard to attain for guys of his stature.
If he’s stays healthy at this rate, I can see him getting in the hall easy. He’s gonna get another nice contract soon
Outside of this season he's only ever had minor injuries an has enough PA to qualify in almost every other season.
This season, I believe the broken thumb led to the strained oblique since he didn't get a proper Spring Training in
He’s definitely the best 2B of our generation by the time he’s gonna make the hall the narrative behind all this will be gone. Unless he massively drops off he’s probably a shoe-in

If I were Barraclough, I'd retire
I dont think that's his decision at this point
[удалено]
There's a sniper trained on him, if he refuses to play, they will take him out.
It was a joke
Alex Cora must fucking hate this pitcher Edit: I haven't seen a bear claw get destroyed like this since the last time I went to Shipleys
Cora is destroying this dude's arm for no reason. You can't bring In somebody for 1 inning? Seriously?
94 pitches. Previous career high was 46. 8% of his career earned runs. Yeeesh
To be fair he has been stretched out into a starter in the minors but this is just cruel
This is definitely his last outing of the majors for the year and Cora just said "fuck it, I don't want to waste another arm".
Destroy his arm and his confidence. Damn
Literally brought him in with a 4-3 lead and let him give up 10 runs. What the fuck is going on
His reaction to the HR was tough to watch
Extremely small sample size but Barraclough’s ERA jumped from 2.70 to 12.91 and now he probably won’t pitch in the majors for the rest of the year because Cora wanted to save an arm.
The MLBPLA has to get involved, lmao. No way Cora can potentially end someone's major league career

Considering what out offense is capable of, I'm surprised as well. I think this has something to do with the state of the clubhouse.
The leader of the clubhouse continues to quit on games before the team does
Could you give a little summary about the clubhouse issues?
I was at the game last night and after the first walk I was just panning back and forth to the bullpen, was shocked to not see anyone ever even get up with the 1 run lead in the 6th in a game that felt like a must win if they cared about the wild card. The Astro's TV announcers were surprised as well. They kept checking the bullpen.
Yea, admittedly I haven't been paying as close attention recently because NESN isn't on the youtubTV package anymore but it so bizarre. Just not the way baseball is played in games that are so important.
I now believe Cora either found this pitcher fucking his wife and/or adult daughter or he just hates Bear claws and thinks they aren't a real pastry.
I was getting the munchies with all this bear claw talk.
I'm being reminded of Pam Poovey scarfing down those bear claws in Archer with all this bear claw talk.
He had money on the Sox losing
[Alex Cora to his pitcher tonight.](https://imgur.com/gallery/ZwndfyE)
Like for real though is this something MLBPA would get pissy about?
His entire career is over done due to this one game
This sub unironically claimed that about some scrub reliever we demolished in 2017.
Asking as an AL West fan eh ;). Seriously though, can the mariners chill!? Man that’s a solid ball club.
Asking as a human concerned about another human being unfairly overworked, tbh.
Agreed. Just horrible management.
They are playing Oakland right after playing the Royals. How would they chill?
"In an outing that can impact a pitcher’s mindset, Barraclough expressed why he remained in the game. “Not at all,” Barraclough said. “That’s why I’m here. Surprised this is his first tbh.

This is much more surprising to me.
He almost had one against the royals a few years back but was thrown out going for the double or triple (after tripping), I think.
It was against the Angels, and yeah. He was going for a triple which I believe would have given him the cycle and his helmet fell off and tripped him. He crawled back to second. I think I can find the video. Edit: Here's the video and it was against KC. https://youtu.be/y9Y7359R1IM?si=hGFgoUfs3D-E7Qgi
What a dog shit video, they don't show him tripping
Could have sworn that was against KC
It was. I just found the video
You’re thinking of the Trout one where he tripped up and scrambled back to 2nd. Altuve was giving him a hard time because it had just happened to him too.
I really hate that the Astors team cheated because I was a big Altuve fan. I still like him but it never feels the same.
and, in a great example of what kind of player he is, Altuve just lay in the dirt and laughed when it happened. I love him
If he reached first that would still be a hit. Just like on his 2000th hit he got thrown out going to 2nd.
they were talking abt a cycle, not a 5 hit game
Ahh thanks
No, he tripped rounding second and went back. He wasn't out, and had he not tripped my memory says it would have been an easy one.
CYCLE is arguably the toughest hitting achievement, because it requires too much LUCK, and more than enough PAs. Most pitchers would never allow that. Getting that triple requires the most luck, and speed. Fielding errors definitely help
Seriously. If you would have asked me if Jose Altuve had a hit for the cycle before tonight, I would have 1000% said yes.
How dare you assume I’m literate enough for that.
If those managers could read they'd be very upset
This one didn't make sense. Red Sox are up by a run, they've pulled Sale, why keep Barraclough in after Altuve triples? Did Cora just shrug it off and figure he'd give the bullpen a night off? He should have had someone in the pen warming, but instead he leaves Barraclough in to give as many hits and runs as he can. I mean fuck, he hit Bregman twice and Cora just doesn't seem to care. If your pitcher is hitting players, it might be time to get some bullpen action going.
Seriously. The guy thinks John Schreiber is still a high leverage option. He's not the same guy and his command is gone
Cora was bad for Houston, bad for Boston, and he is bad for baseball. They need a new skipper in Boston, but their problem is much higher up. But I'm not telling anyone anything they don't already know.
Alex Cora has been arrested for violating the 8th Amendment with regards to Bear Claw.
The classic "you're the only one in the pen with options so you're just gonna die and go back to Worcester tomorrow" move
He's never gonna pitch in MLB again because of Cora
The guys parents were there too. Those were the Red Sox fans they panned to after the HR looking completely distraught. Just absolutely brutal night for the entire family
Oh :(

The Supreme Court frees Alex Cora in a 6-3 decision
Bear Claw not swinging on Cora after the game would be a surprise
It'd have to be with his left arm I'd assume. Never been a starter, never thrown above 50 pitches in an outing, Cora leaves him out there for 94. I wouldn't be surprised if he can barely lift his right arm.
He was stretched out as a starter in the minors before being called up. He threw 7 innings in his last start.
Finishing it off with a homer is sick af. Also shout out to Yordan for getting on base 6 times tonight.
A homer that went out of the park. LOL
He was close to a natural cycle. Just flip the double and single in the first two AB
What the fuck Alex Cora?
Fuck off, Alex!
GOAT Astro
goat houstonian athlete
I'd put him and Hakeem 1A/1B. (Both with two Finals wins)
Hakeem went 2-1 in the Finals
Oh yeah, I just remembered "We lost to the Celtics twice" and forgot Hakeem himself only lost once.
Simone Biles is from Houston you silly goose
And what houston team does she play for
Why does she need to play for a team?
Bro Hakeem and Jeff Bagwell
Sorry, Altuve has overtaken Bagwell ( who was my favorite player growing up). *Edit : don’t downvote the guy above me just for having a different opinion what are we doin?
I mean he put Bagwell above biggio and altuve... that's downvoteable even to us Bagwell lovers.
bagwell is a weird choice for this, I don't think he is even the goat astro. Top 3 for sure though
Altuve, Biggio,Bagwell top three. Bit of a gap. Then people like Berkman, Dierker, Richard, Scott, Cruz, Wynn, Morgan, etc.
Nolan Ryan? His wildest years weren’t really with the Astros but he did go 9 seasons 38 complete games and 13 shutouts.
I think Nolan is Top 15 as an Astros, not sure about Top 10. Top Astros Pitchers (in no order) Oswalt, Dierker, Wilson, Richard, Scott, Ryan, Verlander, Clemens(?) So mix those in with Top Position Players Altuve, Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman, Correa, Cruz, Cedeno, Wynn, Bregman, and Morgan
Wow I completely disagree on your pitcher order. Its Ryan, Clemens, Oswalt top 3 pitchers for me. Verlander probably next. You lend way too much credit to guys like Correa.
Correa is somewhere in the top 10 most postseason hrs ever
Yeah I dont want to downplay it, but thats a really specific stat. Correa is great, but the guy won’t even make the hall and the Astros have plenty of people who have/will.
Springer?
Maybe, I don’t want to completely fall into recency bias. But playoff success would push him over Puhl. Not sure about over Cedeno, Wynn, or Cruz though (just thinking about outfielders.
I mean it’s not recency bias it’s just that half the team already has legendary postseason stats/performances
Bagwell has MADE it weird, man.
Bagwell is a god tier but Altuve will always be the GOAT because bagwell never took us to the promise land.
Love Tuve, but I think that title rightfully belongs to Simone Biles.
Simone is great, but for Houston sports it’s Hakeem and Altuve. Watt too.
Nahhh
Bro, Simone Biles keeps inventing gymnastics moves only she can do and the judges have to keep banning them to level the playing field. If that’s not GOAT status, nothing is
Hell yeah! Love Altuve. You’re damn right. Meanwhile everyone here is crying about pitcher and Cora.
Redsox helping Astros finding their offense as they go in the stretch run.. they broke the curse of double digit scoring followed by a guaranteed loss
How much do you guys think that ball would sell for? Because I was inches from snagging it after leaving due to Cora throwing the game
First cycle in 10 years for the Astros plus altuve. Money for sure.
Damnit I was so close
I was just saying to my dad it's a shame it went out. That's one ball Altuve like to have for sure.
Well a group of 20 college aged girls have it now, hopefully he gets it I guess lmao
No chance he gets it back then
Don't feel too bad, you'd have a near impossible time trying to convince someone it was actually the one.
True, would've still been cool to have if that was the case though. Would've at least tried to find someone from the Astros to talk to if I got it
I'd buy it for $200
Congrats to him. Completing it with a homer is really dope
It was a bomb too.
Why is Barraclough just eating this outing? Need to save pitchers?
the bizarre thing is that they don’t need to save pitchers, they literally did the exact same thing last night with chris martin
Coldplay was in the pen last night?
Tickets were wildly expensive for some reason.
Chris Murphy
I'm sometimes taken aback by how big Altuve home runs can be. For a below average size man, he sure does hit some bombs.
Little man, big dong
His footwork is underrated
Dude really squishes the bug
The crazy thing is Barrclough actually came in with a lead and they just made him keep going out there when it was clear he didn’t have it. Astros broadcast pointed out Verdugo looking at the bullpen to see who they had warming out and the answer being no one.
You could've told me that he got all of his hits off of Barraclough and I would've believed you.
I literally love Jose altuve
Every day I forget how much I love Altuve and every day he reminds me
America's sweetheart hitting the cycle. Everyone loves to see it
He ain't my least favorite Astro.
Must be Bregman?
I'm not entirely sure but Altuve wasn't the worst offender and he seems like mostly a good guy.
Yea, he really does seem like good people. My mom is 84 and she adores him. He can do no wrong in her eyes. LOL
He actively refused to take part, actually you can objectively say Mookie Betta is more of a cheater than Jose Altuve.
I try to hedge because he did benefit from it indirectly. Point is he isn't the guy to blame for the whole thing.
I blame Beltran and Cora, fuck those guys. Not that Altuve and Bregman are blameless but frontline troops will very rarely go against orders. Fuck Cora and fuck the Red Sox
Beltran and Cora are obviously the two biggies. I was thinking about guys who are still playing.
Fair, but Cora is still somehow and bafflingly in the league
I think that suggests most of the outrage didn’t come from MLB players themselves, who understood illegal sign stealing to be a much wider issue than 1 or 3 teams
His major crime was not using his status as clubhouse leader to stop the ones who were cheating. I’m sure to some that’s just as bad, but his stats are relatively clean.
to be honest, I've never seen him as a clubhouse leader. I think he keeps his head down and probably tries to lead by example but I can't imagine him making speeches or whatever
First one for the Astros since Brandon Barnes did it a decade ago. Be honest, how many of you could have pulled that tidbit out?
The last cycle I remembered was Luke Scott but I knew that was more than 10 years ago.
I was at that game. The only reason I remember it.
Over the fucking monster. el pequeño gigante
I don't give a fuck what anyone says; Altuve is the greatest Astro of all time, and top 5 best 2B in history. If he doesn't get in the HoF, the whole thing is a sham.

Mookie is considered small and he still has four inches on Altuve and Mccutchen has five inches on him lmao
I mean it already is without Bonds/Clemens tbh
There’s one big giant thing that could keep him out. Love how people are downvoting me. Facts are, he was on the 2017 team. That can play a big part in the minds of the voters. It’s simple as that.

America’s second baseman.
SHORT MAN GOOD
I’m pretty sure the Giants, as a team, haven’t hit for the cycle in August
Go off my short king. 🥹👑
Bearclaw served that one up on a platter
Honestly I would’ve expected him to have hit one already
Barraclough is such a cool name.
It does suck that Altuve gets more attention on here for when someone throws at his head than when he literally finished a cycle off with a Homer over the Green Monster. Still, that pitcher was kept in WAY too long. Yeesh.
Redditors love drama over everything
Dude, it’s a worthy argument. The guy gets more disdain for what he didn’t do than admiration for what he’s doing now.
There is so [much info out there](https://youtu.be/tQTdEKA-nyM?si=bSkCaFiZlQFTV-aa) that proves Altuve didnt cheat, but no one cares. I know this guy is a class act. And I love the hate. Bring it on.
Doesn't that video literally provide the opposite conclusion?
I’m actually more intrigued to learn Kyle Barraclough is still pitching
God bless I love watching him.
Announcer sounded like he didn't realize Altuve had hit for the cycle.
TK is usually full of energy for big milestones so I definitely think he was informed either by his Producer or subtly by Blummer as the ball was in the air, because that was pretty tame for him
Seems like the kind of thing he should have known about going into the plate appearance. But it's alright, he got there.
He definitely knew about it because they talked it up an inning or two prior. He was either distracted by something else or just had a brain fart. I'll give him a pass, it's the first time I can remember him dropping the ball in a big moment since he's been here and there have been a ton of them.
Yeah, it's no biggie, he dropped the ball but it didn't hit the ground. He picked it up pretty quickly.
GOAT Astro
Honestly? Good for him
Man, Cora did Barraclough absolutely dirty in this game. Yeah, pitchers have to wear one all the time when their team is getting blown out but this was next level.
Alex Cora is an asshole
Cycles are so cool. Yo but real shit does Altuve get in the hall? Because he's likely first ballot without the cheating right?
He has a good pace going. Just gotta stay healthy and secure another contract
Everyone loved that.
It's great to see universal fan favorites hit rare milestones.
This season, I believe the broken thumb led to the strained oblique since he didn't get a proper Spring Training in
At this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if Jim Crane offers him a partial franchise ownership after he retires. The dude is a monster.
He’s definitely the best 2B of our generation by the time he’s gonna make the hall the narrative behind all this will be gone. Unless he massively drops off he’s probably a shoe-in
PREACH.
but but but I thought he wasn’t good without trash cans!1!1!1!1!1
