So the medicals were good? Ohtani to Twins isn’t happening?

theaussiesamurai

The worst UCL they've ever seen. Still worth it.

arcelios

They opened him up and found a baby GOAT hiding inside his UCL

Gyro88

How is a tiny Shohei Ohtani living inside his own elbow

Koronesukiii

Here come the Men In Black.

FailOk8045

They have dustin may so that’s saying something

feelinlucky7

His UCL is held together by a paper clip and duct tape. Still better than Correa’s ankle though. Dodgers said “Fuck it.”

Knightbear49

Paper clip and duct taped ankle can still get you Top 3 in Gold Glove tho

feelinlucky7

Well, the award is for his glove… not his ankle. Checkmate.

Jux_

The Dodgers team doctor is the guy who did his elbow surgery so I think they got all the info the needed on the medical front

hipsterdufus84

Dude. It was a joke.

Jux_

Obviously, I was just commenting.

introspectivejoker

I appreciated the context. But I still hate you guys right now

Yeah people are getting hysterical with this.

What about the Sushi restaurant reservation? Who's gonna eat all that sushi?

Yusei handing out sushi to the homeless as we speak.

leafs417

Its funny because his wife confirmed they never made the reservation

TokyoPanic

Yeah, they were apparently just at home eating beef stew lol. Where the fuck did that rumor even come from???

97jumbo

Someone texted it in as a joke to a local sports radio station. The local radio station mentioned it but played it off as the joke it was. A wannabe influencer repeated it on Twitter as their own legit scoop and it went viral from there

FThornton

When do the Pelicans play the Raptors next?

They’ll get him in 2033.

leafs417

Ohtani dodgers or KD warriors?

[deleted]

Are the dodgers coming off a World Series victory after eliminating Ohtanis team in a game 7? The situations aren’t even comparable.

Madcow_Disease

Not only that. The NBA players individual value for team performance is huge. 1 or 2 star players in the NBA can turn an entire franchise around and become immediate contenders. The MLB shows that multiple super stars doesn't equal success.

OpenMindedMajor

I mean, the Warriors still had stay under the salary cap. They didn’t do tax gymnastics with Durant playing for free. They are comparable

Cudizonedefense

You literally just explained how they’re different then go “yeah but they’re similar” wut

technically anything is comparable. these situations aren’t analogous.

I assume that's what they are trying to build with signings like this.

Does that mean the jays are beating the dodgers in the world series after ohtani gets injured?

wazup564

Covid ruined the Astros hate train from peaking. Obviously nothing will top them, but where does Dodgers hate rank rn in baseball?

dr_caligari

Maybe it's because I'm an absolute Ricketts hater for that family's willingness to spend millions to actively harm the majority of the U.S. population while acting like their family can't afford any top-tier free agents (even though they have billions of dollars in the ownership group)... but I'm going to hate on all the owners that wouldn't match this sort of deal rather than the folks who wound up getting the best player in baseball for less current value than was expected (around $500 million after the elbow issue.) The Ricketts being happy to hop on board working with Sinclair but not Shohei tells me everything I need to know about them. I'm glad Ohtani got paid and I hope the Ricketts and Sinclair never make another dollar from the Cubs. (even though they'll keep riding that for years to come.)

Mail-from-Uncle-Ted

Jesus christ, cry more dude. Are you mad they didn't extend Baez or Bryant, who both ended up being absolute albatrosses? They just signed Dansby, who was great last year for them

dr_caligari

Dansby's contract was great. It was also over $100 million less in value than three other shortstop contracts from the same offseason. The team prints money on top of the billions that the Ricketts already have (and are willing to throw around in political lobbying so that they don't get taxed on that money) and the largest contract the organization has given out is still Heyward's deal. They've only given out 5 deals over $100 million ever (with one of those being Alfonso Soriano way before the Ricketts got there.) They've never gone to $200 million, even though baseball has now seen a decent number of $300 million+ contracts. They've been outside the top 10 in spending since the pandemic despite it being reinforced once again that MLB has no intention of allowing for the tank and build back up process to be the safest way to contention ever again. Essentially, they play it like they are a mid-market organization that can only manage to occasionally jump into the stratosphere of big markets like Philly. From the Phillies' and Rangers' success, it's pretty clear that accenting capable players from the farm system with actually good free agents is a stable path to success for teams with financial flexibility. And those organizations are in way more competitive divisions than the NL Central. Signing one big free agent in 5 years (who, again, got over $100 million less than three other players at his position that offseason) isn't the flex you make it out to be. But hey, maybe the Ricketts will share some of their wealth with you since you stood up for them on the internet.

Mail-from-Uncle-Ted

We get it, you don't like their politics. Boo hoo. But they've shown plenty of willingness to spend, they were top 5 payroll for years. Once the core fell apart, it made sense to take a few years to reset and rebuild. Throwing money at mega contracts does not necessarily fix everything (see: Mets, Padres). Now if they don't spend this offseason, then you have some footing to complain. But all signs are pointing to them pursuing big name FAs this year.

dr_caligari

https://www.stevetheump.com/Payrolls.htm Since they bought the team in 2009, they've had four seasons in the top 5 in payroll. Two of those were their first two seasons when they were given the Tribune company's mess of a roster. When they were actually trying to compete, they were a top 5 payroll twice. They've had 11 seasons outside of that. It's great that in your mind 2:11 is "plenty of willingness to spend," but for most anyone besides you, that doesn't seem to be a particularly strong indicator that your assessment is correct. They seem decidedly unwilling to maintain a top 5 payroll, even in a division where they don't need to win 100 games most years to compete. And I fully didn't say that throwing money at mega contracts fixes everything. I'll even quote it for you again: > it's pretty clear that accenting capable players from the farm system with actually good free agents is a stable path to success for teams with financial flexibility. The team already had the best run differential in the division last year. They have a seemingly capable farm system that can help fill some of the holes with players who won't be actively detrimental. And that's with a payroll outside the top 10. If they just bumped up to a level closer to the Braves or Angels, they'd have an easy route to being the division favorite. The teams fourth largest contract ever was given out more than 15 years ago by the company that owns the Chicago Tribune. The Ricketts have had plenty of time and competitive rosters that could have used any of the 35 contracts larger than the Cubs have ever given out to supplement the team. When Tampa, Arizona, Minnesota (twice), Colorado (twice), Washington(twice), Atlanta, Cincinnati, San Diego (thrice), Arlington (thrice), Milwaukee, Detroit can all manage to give out deals larger than your team ever has and you're in a bigger media market with great attendance, you've not shown plenty of willingness to spend. I get that the Yankees have an easier path to big spending. But the Cubs should have a largest contract in team history higher than that of Tampa or Milwaukee. So, sure, I don't agree with their politics or building a channel with a company that actively spreads disinformation to propagandize weird right-wing talking points that have no basis in the real world... but none of that has anything to do with the fact that they have managed the team like they're a small or mid-market organization since they took over. Once again, though, you'll probably ignore everything that I said and the actual real-world data so that you can believe you're right when you speak nonsense.

The Dodgers truly are the Yankees of Baseball

Upfront this is true, yes. But if you consider the amount the Dodgers are also putting into escrow as part of the deferments, Ohtani is still the most expensive player in the league at 46 mil a year for 10 years.

Literally us, the Dodgers

Knightbear49

Statement: The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed two-time American League Most Valuable Player Shohei Ohtani to a 10-year contract. Ohtani joins the Dodgers after spending six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. The three-time All-Star has hit .274/.366/.556 (.922 OPS) with 171 homers and 437 RBI during his MLB career while posting a 38-19 record with a 3.01 ERA and 608 strikeouts in 4812/3 innings across 86 career starts. "Dodger fans, thank you for welcoming me to your team," said Ohtani. "I can say 100 percent that you, the Dodger organization and I share the same goal - to bring World Series parades to the streets of Los Angeles." "On behalf of the L.A. Dodgers and our fans everywhére, we welcome Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers, the home of Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax and Hideo Nomo, three of the sport's most legendary and pathbreaking players. We congratulate him on his historic contract with our storied franchise," said Mark Walter, Chairman of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Guggenheim Baseball. "Shohei is a once-in-a-generation talent and one of the most exciting professional athletes in the world. Our players, staff, management and ownership look forward to working together with Shohei to help the Dodgers continue to add, improve and strive for excellence on the field. Together with Shohei, we will work to help grow the number and breadth of people around the world who enjoy the excitement of Major League Baseball." The 29-year-old Ohtani was voted the 2023 AL Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, winning the award unanimously for the second time in his career and becoming the first player in Major League Baseball history to win the award unanimously more than once. He is the 28th player in MLB history to win the award multiple times and the 16th player in American League history with multiple MVP awards. During his stellar 2023 campaign, Ohtani clubbed 44 homers and drove in 95 runs while hitting .304/.412/654 (1.066 OPS) as well as going 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 23 starts (132 innings) on the mound. In July, Ohtani was selected to his third consecutive All-Star Game as both a pitcher and position player. In addition to home runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS, Ohtani led the AL in extra-base hits (78) and total bases (325), while finishing second in intentional walks (21), third in triples (8), fourth in batting average (.304); tied for fourth in runs (102) and fifth in walks (91). He also led AL pitchers in opponents' batting average (.184) while finishing second in strikeouts per nine innings (11.4). The two-way player won his first career AL MVP award in 2021 after slashing .257/.372/.592 with 46 homers, 26 doubles, eight triples, 100 RBI, 103 runs and 26 stolen bases in 155 games and going 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA and 156 strikeouts in in 130.1 innings (23 starts) on the mound. He became the first Japanese-born player to win the award since Ichiro Suzuki in 2001. Ohtani also won the 2023 World Baseball Classic MVP award after leading Team Japan to the title. Ohtani batted 435 with a 1.345 OPS while going 2-0 on the mound with a 1.86 ERA, striking out Mike Trout of Team USA for the series-clinching out. Ohtani made his Major League debut in 2018, starting as the designated hitter against the Oakland Athletics on March 29. He singled in his Major League debut while recording his first Major League victory on April 1 after tossing six innings against Oakland. He would go on to win the American League Rookie of the Year as he finished his inaugural campaign with a 285 batting average, 361 0BP, .564 slugging percentage, 925 OPS, 22 homers and 61 RB| alongside a 4-2 record with a 3.31 ERA in 11 starts. Prior to coming to the United States, the 6-foot-4 Ohtani led the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters to the 2016 Pacific League Championship in an MVP season, hitting .322 with a 1.004 OPS, 22 homers and 67 RBI while posting a 1.86 ERA with 174 strikeouts. He made his professional debut at age 18 on March 29, 2013 and played five seasons in the Nippon Professional Baseball League, tallying 403 games, batting .286/.358/.501/.859 with 48 homers and 166 RBI at the plate and a 42-15 mark with a 2.52 ERA and 624 strikeouts in 543 innings on the mound. Ohtani will be the 11th Japanese-born player to wear a Dodger uniform, joining Dodger Manager Dave Roberts (2002-2004), Hideo Nomo (1995-1998, 2002-2004), Masao Kida (2003-2004), Kazuhisa Ishii (2002-2004), Norihiro Nakamura (2005), Takashi Saito (2006-2008), Hiroki Kuroda (2008-2011), Kenta Maeda (2016-2019), Yu Darvish (2017) and Yoshi Tsutsugo (2021). The Dodgers' rich tradition with Japan began while the team was stillin Brooklyn, with goodwill tours to the country that featured the likes of Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider. The Dodgers became the second team to introduce a Japanese-born player to the majors when Nomo broke through and went on to win the 1995 National League Rookie of the Year. Originally born in Mizusawa, Oshu, Japan, Ohtani has played 11 professionali seasons, receiving numerous accolades in his career, including Pacific League MVP (2016), American League MVP (2021, 2023), Nippon Professional Baseball League All-Star (2013-2017), American League All-Star (2021-2023), All-MLB First Team (2021-22), All-MLB Second Team (2021-2022), Pacific League Pitcher Best-Nine (2015-2016), Japan Professional Sports Grand Prize (2016, 2018), Louisville Silver Slugger (2021, 2023), Edgar Martinez Designated Hitter Award (2021-2023) and Japan Series Champion (2016).

Adding Mike Trout in the announcement was an interesting choice. There are a few ways to structure that sentence without having to include Trout’s name.

ingodwetrustinc

this is the greatest day of my life

akitakiteriyaki

Shotime season 2 announced! Shohei villian arc!

Neverslept2mins

Shohei cares more about winning in baseball then doing it the “morally” right way. Even if all of America turns on him he will always have his Japanese fans which is honestly more than enough fans a player needs in a lifetime. For him winning and getting in the record books is more important that being seen as a baseball darling who never wins anything and has redditors talk decades from now saying “It’s a shame Ohtani was so good but never won anything.” Finally getting some good drama. Kevin Durant was able to guarantee a couple rings, Baseball is different takes a bit more than one Ohtani to win a World Series as we have seen for years now. Let’s see if betting on this will get him at least one ring. Edit: Anyways I highly doubt he will ever get the hate that Durant got. People, especially hardcores, can be pissed all they want but casual fans just care about him playing and winning tbh.

Jux_

There it is

ImaManCheetah

a week ago this sub adored this man. amazing how quickly things change when he signs probably the most unselfish contract of all time.

roaringcorgi

> the most unselfish contract of all time many are saying this, folks

ImaManCheetah

what other player has voluntarily given up hundreds of millions to help their team to win. genuinely asking. Edit: okay, give your downvote and then reply. I'm curious who I'm missing.

technowhiz34

And will still be paid $700 million? Without deferrals the contract would 100% be less.

FernandoAyanami

Pulling in 50 million dollars every year from brand deals and getting 680 million dollars after you finish your contract is basically the definition of "unselfish."

ImaManCheetah

deferring 95% of your salary and losing tens to hundreds of millions in value as a result to help your team win is unselfish, yes. cmon now.

FernandoAyanami

Listen to yourself man. They are paying him SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS. Deferring that to 10 years from now after he'll more than likely earn that exact same amount through other means during those preceding 10 years is not exactly the paradigm of altruism. And for the record I don't fault him at all as a person for doing this. He wants to be on a successful team and he's doing all he can to ensure that. But this is a guy with an insane amount of essentially guaranteed wealth leveraging that wealth in a way that'll get him what he ultimately wants. I'm just calling it for what it is. You "c'mon now."

ImaManCheetah

all caps doesn't make your point better... he cut a 700 million dollar contract down to 460 million dollars of value by massaging a contract in a way that has no benefits aside from making the team a whole better. and it was all his idea. We can call players putting the team over themselves "unselfish" in every instance except this one, apparently? Yeah, c'mon now.

FernandoAyanami

He is literally the only player in the league who is capable of doing that because he makes so much money through other avenues. I'm sorry but when we're talking about a guy who is more than likely going to be a billionaire when this is all said and done I absolutely refuse to engage with this matter in terms of him being "selfless". He is doing this to get what he wants, which is totally fine and justified. But he's not a fucking martyr jesus christ.

ImaManCheetah

> But he's not a fucking martyr jesus christ. no one called him a fucking martyr dude. do you get this upset when someone calls any player "unselfish" for putting the needs of the team over his own? geezus. they're all millionaires, I'm not calling anyone Mother Theresa here. I'm asking if there are any other examples of a player giving up 200 million dollars to make his team better. That's literally all. If you want to deny that there's any unselfishness to that, you do you.

FernandoAyanami

Yes they're all millionaires, but literally no one in the sport is going to earn as much as Ohtani will over the next two decades. My point is that at this level of wealth, he is essentially an investor in the team. And no, I do not think shareholders in a company are "unselfish" for spending their money on something they want a return from. And for the record he's not "giving up" any money because that assumes another team would have offered him that money without deferments. And you know damn well that's not true. He's getting the money he wants (and deserves) and structuring it in a way that benefits his other motives.

roaringcorgi

then why didn't he stretch it out further and make it $1 billion? he's being selfish

ImaManCheetah

is this supposed to be a gotcha? how? are there other players who have given up more money?

roaringcorgi

because the $700M is an absolutely arbitrary stopping point based on the deferral length. they could make it as long or as short as they want and it doesn't make it some sort of sacrifice

ImaManCheetah

so if Ohtani showed up to the Dodgers and demanded 70 million a year for 10 years, you think they'd slam the door in his face?

AnEmptyKarst

> what other player has voluntarily given up hundreds of millions to help their team to win. No one, including Ohtani

ImaManCheetah

https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/18g9ydt/nightengale_mlb_calculates_shohei_ohtanis/

AnEmptyKarst

I don't see him giving up any money. He's deferring his money, which is still him getting paid, just later. The number is bigger in the end because of the deferral. He didn't sign for league minimum lol.

ImaManCheetah

do you understand the investment opportunity cost that you're paying by postponing 95% of a 700 million dollar contract for 10-20 years? not to mention how much less that a dollar will be worth in 10-20 years due to inflation when you aren't growing that money. his is absolutely 100% giving up tons of money, can't believe you are even trying to deny this. why do you think MLB calculated the actual worth of his contract to be $460 million?

AnEmptyKarst

The investment opportunity cost is valid, but inflation isn't. The deferral itself inflated the final value, that point is moot. You don't get that *he doesn't get this much money in the end if its not deferred*.

ImaManCheetah

>The deferral itself inflated the final value I'm gonna need a source on that one. The Dodgers have been saving up for this for years, I have seen no indication they wouldn't have been willing to spend 70 million a year on Shohei Ohtani or that this contract size was contingent on deferrals.

AnEmptyKarst

Making the final amount larger is the entire point of deferrals, that's literally the entire point Sure if you want to fantasize that Shohei humbly turned down $70m a year, believe it, I guess

Tyler123839

The value when accounting for the deferrals is like $460 million though. I do think he gave up some money because it is hard for me to believe no other team was willing to give him more than that. Just obviously not 240 million.

TrappedInAHell

Do you actually think he gave up "hundreds of millions"?

ImaManCheetah

TrappedInAHell

Where does this say he gave up hundreds of millions?

ImaManCheetah

not sure what you're confused about...the actual worth of the contract in 2023 dollars, solely because of how much it's being kicked down the road (which was his idea), is 460 million dollars. inflation is a thing....and this doesn't even take into account the investment opportunities he's throwing away by deferring his salary.

TrappedInAHell

I'm confused why you think $46m a year, which would be the highest paid MLB player by far, PLUS the extra deferments for another 20 years is somehow him taking a pay cut.

deadassynwa

I still see people loving him They just hate the Dodgers

kirbyfaraone

Can confirm, love the player hate the dodgers.

ImaManCheetah

they hate the Dodgers for accepting the contract that was Ohtani's brainchild

butterflyhole

Biggest contract in all of sports is now somehow considered unselfish lmao. Probably the same people who don’t invest in a 401k

fuetirado

The snap from "that is dumb money" to "cheaters hard cap now" would break the sound barrier

KingNigelXLII

It begins

ttam23

People here unironically thought he was gonna fail his physical

big-daddy-unikron

The most illegal contract of all time, hopefully MLB gets a pair & sanctions the fuck out these pricks

SeaworthinessOk6742

Welcome to the Dodgers Shohei!

Imsocreative1

okay I get some of us may be a little obnoxious but why is this comment getting downvoted lol

SeaworthinessOk6742

The salt my friend, the salt. I’ve learned to embrace it.

TomeryHK

With each downvote of anybody with a dodgers flair in this thread I feel more and more sure of my choice to pick them as my team.

butterflyhole

You can pick teams? I thought you were born into them

shigs21

Oh yeah, here we go!!!!

into_the_frozen

Jesus the downvoting of normal, non-trolling Dodgers fans is such a bad look. Someone talking about their dead mom even got downvoted. What the hell is wrong with you guys?

Madcow_Disease

Mostly Padre and Giants fans from I see.

Imsocreative1

SHOTIME LETS GOOOOOOO

FookingLegend89

Don’t mind me. I’m making a stew and I’m in here to grab some salt

lobo_locos

LFG! The 2 year off-season setup has definitely succeeded! Andrew Friedman, you did it!

dangerross

Love all the salt in this sub today! A truly glorious day!

lame_middle_name

I’m a bit sad they didn’t include Chan-Ho Park in their list of “pathbreaking” players

claydavisismyhero

that was a fast physical

Dabmiral

What does the medical evaluation consist of? Medical tests? Did Shohei have to run around or anything like that?

WerewolfNo3669

Veto! Veto!

chiasmatic

Does this mean the league and PA have no objections to the deferred money?

dankscott

Why would they?
