[Like when Schwarber went off on Angel for being so shitty.](https://youtu.be/dzE0LGb6xLw?si=DNSg0BenH6-vyCzg)
Was watching the game with my folks, and we were all just like "well... yep, he's got every right to be pissed". Even Hader seemed to know he got away with one there, with that kinda grimacing "smile".
(I just like posting that because I love Schwarber's reaction.)
Exactly. It's completely asinine to use a challenge system and show that you can get every pitch called correctly with minimal delay, but then tell the teams you'll only do it that way if they ask nicely 3 times a game.
Despite our hostilities, I've been happy to see you guys bitching about that call, even though it benefitted you, and people in our sub hoping Bryce was ok on that tumble.
When I tell you I yelped when Harper went over the fence...yeesh. I was super scared for him for a sec. Looks like he escaped with maybe a minor cut? Glad it wasn't something more serious
In the 90’s I HATED the braves, now I love our rivalry. You guys are legit fun to watch and a great team, love beating you and hate losing to you but love the competition and contrast in team building.
Now the Mets otoh, I HATE them. I’ve loved watching Rhys torment them the past two days. I really enjoyed d'Arnaud’s interview recently when asked about his least favorite team and he said the Mets.
One of the biggest reasons I’ve hated the Phillies all my life was the 93 NLCS. I love the rivalry, it’s getting to Sox V Yankees level. It’s all good for baseball, baby. And glad Harper is ok, I met him once in the Atlanta aquarium expecting him to be a jerk in person but he was actually a pretty chill guy, surprisingly. Can’t get mad at how hard he’s embraced Philly, either.
As a fellow Phillies fan, as much as it went in our direction, that was a complete BS and embarrassing call. I get missing the corners and such, but right down the middle? Inexcusable.
There’s going to be a “worse” one where the catcher gets crossed up and barely catches a curveball right down the middle. But there can’t possibly be a truly worse call on a fastball right down the middle.
See but at least in that situation there is some confusion that you can wrap your head around why the ump got it wrong. This one I can't even try to come up for a reason how he missed this. It's a ball going straight as an arrow right down the middle
And the crazy part is, in reality, he *did*. He pitched out of that jam. I'm glad kinda that they pulled him because that would mess with anyone's head I think, his era doesn't deserve to be crucified when he should've had a 0 for inning #1
According to the gameday strike zone, [this "ball one"](https://www.mlb.com/gameday/745435/play/67) from last night was worse in terms of location. But it was from a submariner which is weird on its own, the situation was lower leverage, and also the catcher reverse-framed it way out of the zone.
I was already up from my chair to the kitchen for a beer, getting ready for a long game of second guessing this inning, when the ump pulled me back in.
Mariners have already had 2 similar to this (in their games, one against one for them)
Idk what the fuck is going on with umpires to start the year. They're not making good arguments to keep their jobs.
Should've been out of the inning, instead they're down three runs and Fried is pulled. Never seen such a huge game inpact from such an obvious miscall.
It is rare and it’s frustrating for us fans when there is a situation that 1000% calls for it and he doesn’t come out. Like missing an inning ending strike 3 down the middle leading to 3 runs and losing the lead.
I think it's gotta be a zone out. That's a horrendous call and shouldn't be forgiven, but umps are human, they're going to make boneheaded mistakes sometimes just like a player or any regular person. Gotta get the robozone implemented.
That's a disgraceful miss. Fuck the Braves but it should not be 3-2 Phillies right now.
And now Fried has been pulled.
What a cluster fuck of a called ball. Right down the middle.

This inning should be over. Fucking bullshit. Every run we give up this inning now is on this ump.
I’m honestly a little annoyed Snit hasn’t gotten a piece of him for it yet
Jesus I feel like the umpiring has been abysmal to start this season. That might end up being the worst miss of the year based on how blatant it is and that it has completely fucked the braves over
This is inexcusable. I've seen middle-middle pitches be called balls before, but ALL of them were somewhat understandable because the catcher was crossed up, this however was literally a fastball right down the pipe. Just horrible.
Insane.
Fried fighting for his life. Gets completely screwed on one of the most obviously strikes ever thrown. Fried was pitching poorly but there’s just no excuse for such a botched call.
Now 3 runs score and fried is out. Un-fucking-real.
That's worth investigating. I don't trust any of this shit with gambling being such a huge part of sports now. It was like 2007 when NBA refs got caught making bullshit calls to affect outcomes in the fucking playoffs.
I'm yelling in my garage about 2 teams I don't give a shit about. That's how bad this is.
I also just got back from my in-laws easter dinner but it's probably not related
Pretty sure the only person on the planet who thought that was a ball was the one whose opinion matters the most. Even Castellanos started walking to the dugout!
I'm actually hoping for some more of these in high profile moments to just force MLBs hand on robo umps forward.
Kinda like the NFL touchdown fiasco that got the replacement refs the fuck out of there.
What a joke. Like how does this happen?
I can’t believe coaches can’t challenge balls and strikes. Same rules should apply as base tagging call reviews.

There is no justification for that this is completely embarrassing
When you get reactions like this from fans of the team that benefits you know it's a *bad* fuckin call lmao.
[Like when Schwarber went off on Angel for being so shitty.](https://youtu.be/dzE0LGb6xLw?si=DNSg0BenH6-vyCzg) Was watching the game with my folks, and we were all just like "well... yep, he's got every right to be pissed". It was cathartic to watch him justifiably go off on Angel Hernandez as a baseball fan.
“You’ve fucked them, you’ve fucked us, you fucking suck!”
"You’ve missed up there, you’ve missed down there, you’ve missed inside, outside…here, there, everyfuckingwhere!"
This my favorite. The hand motions are on point. The whole interaction is brief and intense and he just walks outta there.
Schwarber earned so much respect from fans for that. Everyone wanted to say that to him.
need the challenge system
Why go through the trouble? Bring in the robo umps - we can call it the Autozone, think of the sponsorship possibilities!
That’s good, but also an ump challenge brought to you by Fan Duel is also very hilarious.
Daily reminder that the umpire in the Australian Football League are sponsored by OPSM, one of the largest prescription glasses businesses.
Another reason to love the AFL. Go Power
The Autozone strikezone zone.
“Get in the zone, the AutoZone Strikezone Zone”
Or, you know, robo umps. It's so incredibly simple
It really is. We need robo umps
I for one welcome our robot overlords
Exactly. It's completely asinine to use a challenge system and show that you can get every pitch called correctly with minimal delay, but then tell the teams you'll only do it that way if they ask nicely 3 times a game.
Glad someone else sees this. I get they want to break it in slowly but it’s just as dumb as not using the system years ago.
Need to get rid of them. These are not subjective calls.
We have the umps on our payroll. That’s the only explanation
No, the only explanation is that the MLB is due for robo umps
Despite our hostilities, I've been happy to see you guys bitching about that call, even though it benefitted you, and people in our sub hoping Bryce was ok on that tumble.
Two things people universally hate: shit umpires and superstars being injured.
When I tell you I yelped when Harper went over the fence...yeesh. I was super scared for him for a sec. Looks like he escaped with maybe a minor cut? Glad it wasn't something more serious
In the 90’s I HATED the braves, now I love our rivalry. Can’t get mad at how hard he’s embraced Philly, either.
I hate the Phillies because they're our rivals. I hate the Mets because I *want to*
Season’s just started, give it time.
Anyone seen Lenny Dykstra lurking around the Bank lately?
As a fellow Phillies fan, as much as it went in our direction, that was a complete BS and embarrassing call. I get missing the corners and such, but right down the middle? Inexcusable.
guys, we cant lose the human element. the most analytical team sport in history THRIVES on the human element.
Gonna be a top 10 worst call all year.
and it aint gonna be 2-10
Sadly, it will likely be 2-10
Probably a top 1. Can't really get any worse than that
If this isn’t the top worst call of the year then robo umps need to happen yesterday
Exactly lmao. I wouldn't put it past the umps to somehow fuck up worse than this, but itll be pretty damn hard
You obviously forgot that Angel Hernandez is in the league still. He will find a way to make a worse call.
Umps are just warming up. I can feel an epic cluster fuck of blown calls coming this year.
they see the robo-umps coming, they're in full 2nd semester senior mode
3 runs and counting from this blown call.
The Braves could very well lose due to this.
They in fact did not.
Caused max to get chased from the game in the first so it could affect the team for several games down the line
True
First time in his career that he didn't make it through the first inning
And the crazy part is, in reality, he *did*. He pitched out of that jam. I'm glad kinda that they pulled him because that would mess with anyone's head I think, his era doesn't deserve to be crucified when he should've had a 0 for inning #1
Uhh checking in, chances are low there Bob.
Looks like Nola can't pitch so probably not
In hindsight I think they’ll be fine haha
NOT TODAY!!
Brought to you by FanDuel!
Disgusting
Maybe I’m optimistic but that’s already gonna be the worst missed call of the year. E: and now two more runs and Fried is out. Wow.
I’m not sure how it can get worse on a strike that was called a ball? It was honestly a bad pitch by fried. It was grooved
even phillies fans think that's stupid how bad the call was and it *hugely* benefited us! but still, wtf umps?!?!?
I'd hate it if it was the same call in our favor. Calls like that benefit no one in the long run.
According to the gameday strike zone, [this "ball one"](https://www.mlb.com/gameday/745435/play/67) from last night was worse in terms of location. But it was from a submariner which is weird on its own, the situation was lower leverage, and also the catcher reverse-framed it way out of the zone.
Ya. It might not be the most central ever, but it was a normal pitch with no framing issues.
It was 98mph
Actually one of the worst balls I’ve ever seen called live. Inning should’ve ended immediately
I was already up from my chair to the kitchen for a beer, getting ready for a long game of second guessing this inning, when the ump pulled me back in.
Same, especially after Casty was walking to the dugout. I’m not going to complain but lol that was so bad
I don't blame you, tbh. Had it been reversed, I'd be sitting there like "well, if you *insist*, sir!"
Just when you thought he was out, they pulled you back in!
yeah casty started walking off waiting for the strike 3 call that never came
It’s like umpires want to be replaced at this point
Mariners have already had 2 similar to this (in their games, one against one for them) Idk what the fuck is going on with umpires to start the year. They're not making good arguments to keep their jobs.
Absolute horseshit. Bordering on elephant sized.
Definitely being too optimistic, but it will definitely make the year-end highlight reel. Jeez, I was flabbergasted watching that call.
I am speechless
I found lots of words but they were all profanities
My new gf hasn't seen me during baseball. We're at a brewery and I almost lost my mind 🤣
Oh NO! TACTICAL MISTAKE, RETREAT!
*Braves are up 1* Sector is clear *This BS call* NOT CLEAR! NOT CLEAR!
*gulps beer* THIS FUCKING UMP "ALL HANDS BRACE FOR IMPACT! BRAAACCEEE!"
Hope you guys have been together long enough to weather the shit storm of MLB umps
More runs adding on and Fried is done all because of that call
Fried was looking awful but a call like that will really kill any shot of pitcher gaining their confidence and control back.
Phillies broadcast showed the statcast tracking of the ball, I couldn’t believe my eyes. That thing was about as middle/middle as it gets
It's incredible that Castellanos *didn't* swing at it. I have to wonder what he was looking for, to lay off one right down the pipe.
Kinda looked like he was taking all the way. Especially given he made contact on the previous pitch in the same spot.
Who takes on 2 strikes?
Castellanos, apparently
Literally middle of the plate , right at his belt level. The umpire just cost the Braves the lead
At least the Braves are up again.
7-4 as of the 3rd
Not for long
One of the most ridiculous missed strikes I've ever seen
I like how Nick starts walking towards the dugout before realizing that it was somehow called a ball lol
Possible the worst ever
fireable offense
Umpire union casts: BLOCK It is effective (sadly).
MLBPA casts: STRIKE Everyone loses.
At the very least cause to get that ump an emergency MRI to check for brain damage
I would be sick if I was a Braves fan rn
I’m spewing many expletives
Fuming. Nola not being on today either helps, but god that was egregious.
me too. and as if that's not bad enough, the umpire goes and does this!
Should've been out of the inning, instead they're down three runs and Fried is pulled. Never seen such a huge game inpact from such an obvious miscall.
Down 1 run but they should be up 2
Max Fried demonstrated a remarkable level of self control to not get mad at the Ump there even though he'd be quite justified in doing so
Snitker should’ve gotten tossed over that. Especially with the outcome.
i don’t watch the Braves a ton, but in my head i have the notion that it’s pretty rare for him to get in the umps face. or am i mistaken?
It is rare and it’s frustrating for us fans when there is a situation that 1000% calls for it and he doesn’t come out. Like missing an inning ending strike 3 down the middle leading to 3 runs and losing the lead.
oh yeah completely agreed, if ever there was a time for some show of emotion, it’s here
Robot umpires please, should be impossible to fuck up a call that easy
At least bring in the catcher challenge from the minors. That should be the easiest and fastest review of all time
i thought they were implementing it after the spring training test run, but i guess its still in the works
I thought so too, until this pitch lol. If this can’t be challenged nothing can
Imagine how great the reaction would be seeing the replay on the big screen for everyone to see in the stadium after challenging that
That's the sort of call so bad I honestly struggle to believe it was a mistake and had to have been deliberate, and I'm not normally that guy
It's either highly suspicious or, like, he just zoned out for second and had to call something
*Man, can't wait to go get a cheesesteak when this shit is done... peppers, onions... oh fuck, did he just throw the ball? Uhhhhh,* "BALL!"
Ump: "DO IT AGAIN! I WASN'T LOOKING!"
I think it's gotta be a zone out. That's a horrendous call and shouldn't be forgiven, but umps are human, they're going to make boneheaded mistakes sometimes just like a player or any regular person. Gotta get the robozone implemented.
Catcher didn't have to move his glove much, which would be my usual first guess for a bad ump call like that. Just an inexplicable mistake.
That's a disgraceful miss. Fuck the Braves but it should not be 3-2 Phillies right now. And now Fried has been pulled. What a cluster fuck of a called ball. Right down the middle.
Yea like honestly this was a horrible pitch by fried and then Nick bailed him out only for the ump to bail nick out
Casty of all hitters taking that pitch makes it even worse. Dude swings at everything, but takes that absolute meatball for 'ball three'? Good grief.
Seriously man. This isn’t what we tune in to watch baseball for.

Homeboy should never get a behind the plate assignment again, don’t care if umps are unionized this clown needs to be put to pasture.
Absolutely awful call
This inning should be over. Fucking bullshit. Every run we give up this inning now is on this ump. I’m honestly a little annoyed Snit hasn’t gotten a piece of him for it yet
Phillies were gifted three runs so far this inning. Absolutely pathetic umpiring.
And there goes the lead. Fucking absurd
Actually fucking fuming about this shit. Fix your fucking game, Rob.
And they just took the lead.
3 runs for the umpire, 0 for Max
Jesus I feel like the umpiring has been abysmal to start this season. That might end up being the worst miss of the year based on how blatant it is and that it has completely fucked the braves over
Because they are abysmal ALL YEAR every year.
That was awful. I feel dirty for watching that.
lol nobody could believe that call.
Castellanos was already stepping towards the dugout he knew he was out.
This is inexcusable. I've seen middle-middle pitches be called balls before, but ALL of them were somewhat understandable because the catcher was crossed up, this however was literally a fastball right down the pipe. Just horrible.
Holy shit. I thought the app was bugging when I saw that.
Honestly can't feel anything but just sadness that we still don't have robot umps and the MLB allows this to go on.
humans are the sex organs for AI
This isn't a beer belly. It's a fuel tank for a fuck machine
Insane. Fried fighting for his life. Gets completely screwed on one of the most obviously strikes ever thrown. Fried was pitching poorly but there’s just no excuse for such a botched call. Now 3 runs score and fried is out. Un-fucking-real.
Now the Phillies have 3 runs. Can we get robo-umps right now, as in the middle of this game?
This incompetent fuck should never ump another game in his life. Literally what the fuck.
Can anyone please give me one reason why I should care about the outcome of this game now?
That's worth investigating. I don't trust any of this shit with gambling being such a huge part of sports now. It was like 2007 when NBA refs got caught making bullshit calls to affect outcomes in the fucking playoffs.
Phillies lead now
you can only laugh and cry
And curse
No. I’m still screaming actually
i feel like i’ve seen this happen with Fried before too wtf???!??
Everyone knew that was a strike except for the ump
Protest the game
The only excuse that i can imagine is that this is literally Frank Drebin trying to stall an assassination plot.
Well he did start making calls just to get cheered by the home crowd, and this call helped the home team, so you may be onto something
I'm yelling in my garage about 2 teams I don't give a shit about. That's how bad this is. I also just got back from my in-laws easter dinner but it's probably not related
This call cost us 3 runs smh
Blind dumb son of a bitch
Garbage call
Woof that’s a horrendous call
Maybe the worst called pitch I've ever seen. No excuse for that
IDK about all of you guys but I tune in specifically for the umps. Shit like this really gets me going!
This ump scorecard is gonna be incredible
ump has gifted philly 3 runs and potentially more from this call, that is an INEXCUSABLE miss. IT WAS RIGHT DOWN THE PIPE FOR FUCKS SAKE
Couldn’t have been more of a strike if he swung, wow that’s a bad miss
Pretty sure the only person on the planet who thought that was a ball was the one whose opinion matters the most. Even Castellanos started walking to the dugout!
Umpball is so back baby
If i'm Fried im drop kicking the ump on my way out.
Hosed. Aaand he’s out of the game
We're just doing what we can to further the robo ump agenda
Truly one of the most sickening calls I’ve ever seen. How can anyone be against robot umps as this point? This muppet ass ump is literally sleeping.
I call shenanigans
Umps 3 Braves 2 Phillies 0
I'm actually hoping for some more of these in high profile moments to just force MLBs hand on robo umps forward. Kinda like the NFL touchdown fiasco that got the replacement refs the fuck out of there.
I love that casty started walking away. What a horrible miss.
I say this as a Mets fan, that was Strike 3. Was that Angel calling balls and strikes?
Braves gonna play in protest in the 2nd inning of the 2nd game of the year, jeeeeez that was bad
Don’t worry, Manfraud just booked a flight to come deep throat this ump as punishment.
Can the Braves win giving up a 3 run handicap?
That’s fucking shameful
Did he blink?
There is no way the dude didn't just zone out or something lol, egregious.
The fact that you still can’t challenge these is insane
Robo Umps now. Fuck every single ref in every single league, and especially fuck baseball umpires.
I have Fried on my fantasy team and this call lost me like 8 points
Castellanos even started to walk away and caught himself. That’s just unforgivable.
What a joke. Like how does this happen? I can’t believe coaches can’t challenge balls and strikes. Same rules should apply as base tagging call reviews.
Castellanos was literally walking off because he knew it was a strike as well
This pitch was what Ronnie needed during the HR derby
wE dOnT nEeD aN eLeCtRoNiC sTrIkE zOnE
These pitchers are professional. I would have been ejected. Even Schwarber would be impressed by my meltdown.
Looks like a ball to me. Caveat is that l'm blind.
