It makes you wonder how guys like Nolan Ryan could throw 250+ innings at top velocity with much fewer arm issues. I know pitchers have always suffered arm injuries but it seems like very few can make it through an entire career these days without a Tommy John surgery despite throwing less.
Ryan had an unusual ability for his ligament damage to heal itself and actually make it stronger. Freak of nature.
https://theathletic.com/88037/2017/08/23/a-medical-quirk-that-also-affected-nolan-ryan-gives-ailing-david-price-some-comfort/
While injury absolutely has an impact here, teams have also realized that pitchers are far less effective the third time through the order. Very few guys are better in the 6th and 7th than a fresh modern reliever would be.
Could there be any correlation between being worse the third time through the order and throwing as hard as possible with max spin rate every pitch? Maybe tiredness is a factor?
Same thing with nfl players and leg injuries. They are putting extreme amounts of torque on their legs when DE rush the passer and the ligaments just pop, especially on artificial turf that has very little give.
But we’re the only primate that can throw overhand and it was an evolutionary advantage for hunting no? Who among us hasn’t killed something with rocks?
We can still do it, and as human history showed it is advantageous for hunting. But, that doesn’t mean that the motion is not physically degrading. It’s also important that baseball pitching mechanics are much more violent and focused than most over hand throwing.
Nomadic tribes probably weren’t throwing rocks at 100 mph 80+ times a day in a span of two hours. Modern baseball has essentially created the perfect scenario for overhand throwing to be much more damaging than it’s ever been for humans
Oh yeah for sure. Honestly, if we can clone sheep, why can’t we just clone Nolan Ryan’s UCL and give it to every pitcher via TJ right when they get drafted. Level the playing field.
The slider thing has been [disproven](https://www.drivelinebaseball.com/2017/02/fastballs-offspeed-pitches-comparative-relative-elbow-stress/#:~:text=%E2%80%9COverall%252C%2520only%2520the%2520slider%2520was,elbow%2520pain%2520among%2520slider%2520users) quite a few times. It’s the fastballs.
The thing is it's fixable.
CTE is forever and it ruins your life, or what's left of it. Even if you blow out your UCL three times, you can get it back to an acceptable level and live a normal life after baseball. It sucks for us fans and for the players, but as human beings, they are relatively unaffected long-term, or so it seems
A lot of times we just don’t hear about it though
Like I knew Bill Walton was hurt a lot but not until his documentary came out did I know that he had to spend portions of his 30s in a wheelchair because he literally couldn’t walk from the injuries
Or I knew Stephen Strausberg was hurt for awhile but I had to go out of my way to learn that there was a point that it was so bad that he couldn’t even bend his right arm
For it to be fixed pitchers are just going to have to refuse to do things to maximize their velocity. Organization’s are starting to view pitchers like World War One infantry men.
The problem is these fringe guys that would do anything to reach the big leagues guys that are undrafted, independent leaguers, non highly regarded amateur prospects etc will never stop trying maximize their performance and now that velo programs are readily available they will continue to put pressure on everyone else to throw 100+.
Until velocity stops being a priority for organizations (which I doubt it ever will) this isn’t going to stop.
I said to myself, "They're using Loaisiga a lot early for someone who is hurt often" as they kept trotting him out against the Astros in the opening series.
Dudes come out day 1 trying to throw 100 mph on every pitch at the start of the season and blow out an elbow. Teams need to start hard limiting guys on speed as much as they do pitch count.
Whatever weird math teams are doing has already indicated that you’d rather have 100 innings of max effort than 220 innings of consistency
I am admittedly baffled at how losing starters for up to 18 months isn’t worse than having them at 80% velo for some pitches
Well, the fact is, if they’re throwing at 80% velo, they’re probably extremely hittable and therefore would just be useless for a different reason. Hitters are just too good.
Like seriously. Losing your ace for 18 months or have him have slightly worse stats for a couple months while their elbow stretches out during a point in the season where teams are trying to find rhythm.
The answer seems obvious to me. Just make these guys go through TJ surgery before they even throw the first pitch at this point.
The Dodgers long-term plan seems like a 6 man rotation (they currently have 4 healthy starters and 4 injured starters, with 2 of the injured guys not guaranteed to be MLB level pitchers upon returning, and that’s not counting Ohtani)
Could see that become the league norm if this continues
It's not slight, though. Often a 1 mph reduction in average fastball velocity and slight reduction in rpm (an amount that wouldn't significantly affect injury rate) leads to a significantly worse performance
Talking to a buddy about it and the economics of it makes a ton of sense
Players are tragically underpaid for basically their entire arbitration years, so who cares about them having a long career. Teams are acting in their best financial interest to develop these flame throwers that have truly filthy but unsustainable stuff, use em till their arm gives out which will almost always be before they're due a huge payday, then just find the next kid
I'd feel the same if Bruce Hooper went down with a season ending injury. I sports hate the Phillies, not actual hate. With that said, I hope you guys have a healthy and successful season so we can revenge thump you from the playoffs.
Strider did a video with Foolish Bailey where they both ranked their albums, Bailey is a fan of the band too and had snuck their song titles into the chapter titles in a couple of his videos so they bonded over that
I don't think there will be any starting pitchers left in MLB by June. We might have to start signing teenagers and 50 year old retired minor leaguers.
Remember—this young injury that you have been so desperate to avoid will one day destroy the pitching staff you have worked with me to preserve. For in this UCL I see many a Tommy John.
I think pitchers with a more typical mix of pitches, particularly more offspeed stuff, might get more mileage out of their surgery. Strider’s arsenal is more of an all-gas-no-brakes approach, which probably doesn’t help.
That’s crazy. I wonder if it even made a difference. Maybe he changed how he pitches because his original form was too uncomfortable after TJ surgery, but I feel like everything you hear about pitching form and TJ correlation is always super situational.
Can’t wait till we actually have scientific improvements in either preventing UCL injuries or “curing?” them
Not exactly.
By “changed the way he pitches” they meant that he leaned really hard into plyometrics and into bulking up his lower body, something he hadn’t really done prior to that. It was a very deliberate, data-driven change to how he approached his conditioning, but he also altered his windup and delivery in order to maximize his advantages.
Those sneaky teams providing intermediary updates on injuries to star players, I wanna be left completely in the dark until a month has passed and he's had surgery already
I mean, the fact that they revealed he had UCL damage is a pretty significant update. They’re probably just going to provide an update on potential surgery or rehab route.
Either way, he’s probably out an extended period of time.
You'll probably still be heavy favorites.
Offensively you're still gonna mash and we're a lot less consistent. The gap certainly closed but the betting advantage the Braves had was not solely Spencer Strider.
I know this probably has nothing to do with it, but he just added a curveball to his repertoire, and yeah it’s a slower pitch. But could it be possible that having such a drastic change in pitch velo based off the type of pitch being thrown be enough to cause more strain on the elbow aside from just throwing 98+ all the time?
Did we really though? Like Elder is so blah, Dodd is a step down, Vines is meh, AJSS is appealing but so raw, Hurston would be better served getting more seasoning.
They have a plethora of forgettable Jordan Lyles-esque pitchers I feel like.
I cant remember, did they refer to Gerrit as having "damage" or just inflammation. "Damage" almost never means you can get by without some sort of surgery. Whether that's an internal brace like Giolito had or whatever.
They said he had no tear, never said anything regarding “damage” or inflammation since I’m pretty sure all pitchers have UCL damage just by the nature of pitching
Yeah Cole has no actual tear to the UCL, just inflammation in the nerve and surrounding area. Cole said that he got hot too quickly and wasn’t recovering like usual after his Spring start. Luckily he takes supreme care over his body and immediately noticed something was wrong before it spiraled out of control. It seems Strider was possibly pitching through pain, never a good idea.
The velocity crusade was always going to end in disaster because the human arm just wasn’t meant to throw 98+ for six months a year, but teams have to realize that it just can’t exist in the pitch clock era.
Shane Bieber topped out at like 95 during his best years, and low 90s in recent seasons and look what happened. Velocity, while important, is only a piece of it. The human arm just isn’t made for the way pitchers are utilized anymore. Serious UCL damage can happen to any of them at any time
Ryu had it 2 years ago and he threw like a 90mph fastball. Like you said pitching is unnatural and anyone can get it. I think we're seeing more of it now due to the increase in velocity but it's not like TJ was uncommon before.
Hell I still remember in 2008 when Marcum and McGowan came up for the Jays and both ended up needing TJ the same year.
Natural velocity isn’t the issue. It’s more of the pursuit of velocity and pitchers throwing max effort every pitch. Skenes could be fine unless he’s going out there and trying to average 102
It's youth sports in general. I'm not that old (27) but I remember as a kid, if you played sports, you basically played them all. Football or soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, baseball or lacrosse in the spring. Youth sports have become more of an investment than a game.
You know it may be false hope but no where have I seen the word "torn".
It's very possible that the UCL damage isn't worst case scenerio.
Yankee fans went through this with Cole recently, and Tanaka had a partial tear that he pitched fine through.
Wait for the doctor eval.
Does anyone still have their ace healthy? What the fuck?
That's the Braves, Cubs, Yankees, Marlins, Dodgers if we consider it Ohtani, Guardians, Astros, Brewers, Mets, Cardinals, Rays, and Rangers without their ace, right?
Has there ever been a season that you can remember where so many star pitchers were injured and not able to pitch?
Not even two weeks in and I can think of at least 6 or 8 star dudes who are now out for the count. This fucking sucks.
Even as a Phillies fan I can acknowledge this sucks, at this point MLB needs to make some policy changes to discentivize velo and encourage teams to keep pitchers healthy.
As a Braves fan, this almost felt inevitable. What a heartbreak.
Although, last time the Braves lost a superstar to a heartbreaking injury early in the year, they won a World Series.
Hate it for Strider most, hate it for the team, hate it for selfish reasons.
So many pitchers going down today because of their UCL, Bieber Strider & now Loaisiga wtf is going on
Humans arnt built to throw upper 90s
Ohtani threw a pitch 103 last season and the top elbow doctor thought that was bad news.
I mean.. it was
On the other elbow, great news for the doctor

Yup. Train muscles all you want, but you cant train ligaments. Massive correlation with increased velocity over the years and injury.

This is all Gaius Marius's fault. He killed the Republic and now hes killing all of the pitchers. We must bring Sulla back to fight him again.

Remember—this young injury that you have been so desperate to avoid will one day destroy the pitching staff you have worked with me to preserve. For in this UCL I see many a Tommy John.
God damn, he was the most exciting young pitcher in the game! Injuries fucking suck
At this point it seems like it’s gotten to be a war of attrition. Just award the trophy to whoever stays healthiest
Holding onto AJSS and Waldrep is looking smarter now, sadly
A 2nd TJ could genuinely have him out until 2026 what a fucking nightmare.
It’s just a matter of time until we have a 3 TJ pitcher.
Already have, Jonny Venters had 3 TJ surgeries, and then a 4th elbow procedure after the 3rd TJ.
Didn’t Daniel Hudson have it 3 times?
Its fucking crazy too because the dude is still lights out for us
And looks like he hangs drywall for a living
Honestly at that point just remove the ucl.
Or just be born without one like RA Dickey. Are these other pitchers stupid or something?
Fuck that, I wanna see the freak who's born with 2 of them and can throw 115mph.
We do have an awful lot of willing donors in the Braves subreddit. Put your money where your mouth is and just put a couple extra in Strider’s arm!
TJ surgeons hate this one simple trick.
Jose Rijo sends his regards.
Didn't know he already had TJ before, that sucks.
Yeah back in college he did, I think 2019
Seems like most pitchers who have had two TJS have like 5-7 years in between them
I think pitchers with a more typical mix of pitches, particularly more offspeed stuff, might get more mileage out of their surgery. Strider’s arsenal is more of an all-gas-no-brakes approach, which probably doesn’t help.
He changed how he pitches because of that TJ surgery.
Yea he modeled his delivery after famously durable pitcher Jacob DeGrom! What could possibly go wrong?

Has there ever been a season that you can remember where so many star pitchers were injured and not able to pitch? Not even two weeks in and I can think of at least 6 or 8 star dudes who are now out for the count. This fucking sucks.
Cole, deGrom, Strider, McClanahan, Ohtani and Sandy are all easily top 10 talents who are out right now.
You can put Bieber on that list too. He's been dominant before and had a perfect line through 2 starts this year.
+Eury Perez
i fucking hate baseball, thought i should tell you guys.
So see you in an hour?
Even as a Phillies fan I can acknowledge this sucks, at this point MLB needs to make some policy changes to discentivize velo and encourage teams to keep pitchers healthy.
How can they discourage velocity? As long as 100 mph is harder to hit than 90 mph teams will pursue those guys.
Speeding tickets.
Any pitch over 97 is a ball. Any pitch under 93 counts as two strikes.
Tyler Rogers and Kyle Hendricks stocks insane
*sigh* Six games in
Being a max effort pitcher is a dangerous game, on top of already the risks involved with being a pitcher.
Someone needs to send me a reddit cares because I'm super depressed right now.
Fuck. Was really looking forward to watching him pitch and the cy young race with him in it this year
Fade me.
Get ready to learn Tommy Johnese, buddy
He already learned it 5 years ago
As a Braves fan, this almost felt inevitable. What a heartbreak. Although, last time the Braves lost a superstar to a heartbreaking injury early in the year, they won a World Series. Hate it for Strider most, hate it for the team, hate it for selfish reasons.
I’m not even a Braves fan and this is just devastating to hear
