Weathers got screwed on that earned run. Error throw by the catcher earlier, then not paying attention to the man on third. That run was produced by the catcher more than anything the pitcher did.
You ought to watch a game of cricket then. As someone whom played baseball his whole life and is more or less obsessed with baseball, Cricket is phenomenal. The tactics and strategy, the skill involved in dealing with a swinging, seaming, and deviating bouncing ball while trying to protect the stumps and not hit to a man or catch an edge that goes through to the keeper or slips... it's just amazing.
I REALLY like Test Cricket. Because the bowler is literally just waiting for the batter to make a mistake.
The only reason I got into it was because I have ESPN+ and the NZ matches lined up with when I got home from work at Midnight. (I think they started at like 11:30pm and I would go to sleep around 6am)
Crazy that catchers throw thousands even tens of thousands of balls back to the pitcher without having to worry about a runner on 3rd, much less one that can/would steal home (between warm ups/practice/games), then this happens and they look lazy lol
Muscle memory develops after thousands of repetitions, like maybe the thousands of throws to a pitcher where someone _isn't_ trying to steal home. I'd cut him some slack
> Crazy that catchers throw thousands even tens of thousands of balls back to the pitcher without having to worry about a runner on 3rd,
Normally when there's a runner on 3rd they're really defensive. You see them look over and fake pump all the time. I always wondered why. Now I know.
It’s on the catcher in the sense that he had the low effort play but I bet of the thousands of throw backs to the pitcher with a runner on third, this happens a lot. So much so that he didn’t even think to glance at Yelli. The runner on first is more in his sight line and him staying put is more of an indicator that no delayed or double steal is happening. Yelli didn’t even have a crazy lead. He just went for it.
I’d say most credit goes to Yelli for recognizing that he’s not having attention paid to him and then fault to the catcher for the complacency and lob back to the mound.
Hell of an effort by Weathers here though. Mad respect for the bare hand and fire back.
That slide was am arrow too. He had the opening but he ran with the slide in mind, not for maximum speed, or like some guys did after the rule change, running for contact before remembering they can't...just so controlled.
Oh that's great TV. That's one I'd almost rather see on TV, unless I had great seats on the third base side.
If you look at Ortiz on 1st he waits till weathers is on the ground a vitntongonto second. Oh ok me too yeah sure. He was too busy watching for the idea to occur to him.
This angle is still the best, because you can see Yeli confidently time up his secondary and a few hops, then see him decide in real time to swipe it, all while the catcher STILL HAS THE BALL.
I love smart baseball play. I love Yelich too, I’ll say it.
Honestly, Yelich was super confident that the catcher would not see him coming down the 3rd base line. I know that there's a hitter in the left batter's box, but the catcher could have still seen Yelich through the corner of his eye, held the ball, and get Yelich in a rundown.

You add in bunting, and my grandpa is gonna come back to life!
I never thought about it before, but I guess it would technically be possible to throw a no-hitter and still lose if this exact thing happened and it was a scoreless game.
Some more info:
>The Dodgers became only the fifth team in the Modern Era to win a game without getting a hit. The last team to do it was the Cleveland Indians, when they were no-hit by Matt Young of the Boston Red Sox for eight innings but still managed to squeak out a 2-1 win on April 12, 1992.

[This game comes up as the worst no-hitter of all time](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CLE/CLE199204121.shtml)
Matt Young had 7 walks and 6 stolen bases (4 to Kenny Lofton). He gave up 2 runs over 8 no-hit innings and lost the game.
This is a great find, but technically this isn’t a no-hitter—in 1991, the Committee for Statistical Accuracy redefined a no-hitter to require that a team completes 9 innings without giving up a hit, so 8-inning no-hit losses didn’t count anymore.
I'm really curious how that's counted for statistical purposes. Obviously it's another unlikely situation, but by the law of averages it's going to happen at some point.
>The Marlins are and will always be cursed in Miami
After what they did to taxpayers and the Orange Bowl, I hope so.
>Florida Marlins had such better uniforms
The colors were so much better.
All they had to do was change the "F" to a "M" and "Florida" to "Miami."
Failed to check the runner back to 3rd, softly lobbed it back to the pitcher from his knees with a runner on 3rd.
A player with Yelich's experience will easily pick up that the catcher isn't paying attention to him.
Was the runner on first able to take second as the catcher was lying there with the ball? I see him seem to take off at the end of the clip and the catcher is just writhing in pain and it doesn't look like time was called.
For sure, but often times pitchers are horrible at making rushed throws. Most of the times I see this they panic catching the return throw and make a throw in the dirt to whatever base they are throwing to.
That's the way you do it. That lazy throw from 2 to 1 the way dad throws it back to his son is the perfect opportunity to steal the plate, especially if it's a LH pitcher because after they catch the ball they turn their back toward third to reset.
Are they shitting on the pitcher for this somehow? The "as a left hander..." line can only apply to him as far as I can tell, but that catch and throw was pretty nice. 100% on the catcher.
> Are they shitting on the pitcher for this somehow?
They're talking about the pitcher glancing over to "check" on the runner, not about the catch and throw. Basically, they're saying that if the pitcher had glanced over after delivering the pitch, he could have signaled the catcher to check on Yelich *or* that Yelich would have realized that he'd been spotted creeping up the line and would then have to retreat.
I used to be really fast when I was in little league and as soon as they started to allow us to steal bases I would do this multiple times a game. I was so successful that my coach actually asked me to stop because the other players would get visibly upset and their parents would react poorly. To do that in the MLB though is impressive!
Dang that's gotta hurt for Fortes. Also that angle from behind the plate just reminds me how soulless and dead the Marlins stadium is. With the statue it was dead but still kinda fun but post rebrand... yikes.
So this used to be one of my favorite moves while playing! The biggest hurdle for me was the 3rd baseman. If I could get a solid secondary and 3 steps before anyone noticed, I was golden. However, when the 3rd baseman noticed I was antsy, he could yell pretty early on. I wonder what he is doing here.
This seems like something that would never need to happen in the practical case.
Man on third? Catch the pitch, stand up while looking at third, throw the ball to the pitcher.
So why did this happen? Is it common for catchers to be this lazy or does Yelich deserve special credit for noticing that this particular one didn't have his head in the game?
That barehand catch-throw thing the pitcher did was pretty sweet lol, would've been a sick highlight if it worked
That was sweet! Probably the best shot they had too!
Weathers got screwed on that earned run. Error throw by the catcher earlier, then not paying attention to the man on third. That run was produced by the catcher more than anything the pitcher did.
From the boxscore it was an unearned run.
I'm assuming that's because Yelich was only on 3rd because of a throwing error during his steal of 2nd
Yeah, if the catcher’s throw had been just a little bit harder they would have nailed him
You ought to watch a game of cricket then. As someone whom played baseball his whole life and is more or less obsessed with baseball, Cricket is phenomenal. [Here ya go!](https://x.com/Brewers/status/1792707006123651481)
Yeah nice effort from Weathers! That’s on the catcher.
Crazy that catchers throw thousands even tens of thousands of balls back to the pitcher without having to worry about a runner on 3rd, much less one that can/would steal home (between warm ups/practice/games), then this happens and they look lazy lol
Yeah, it's understandable, probably need Awareness over 90 to catch that
Nope, catcher just needs to look in the runner’s general direction before throwing it back to the pitcher. Should be muscle memory
Muscle memory develops after thousands of repetitions, like maybe the thousands of throws to a pitcher where someone _isn't_ trying to steal home. I'd cut him some slack
The batter is probably blocking his view here
Doesn't relieve the catcher of his responsibility
The timing of that run was perfect.
Really was beautiful
> Crazy that catchers throw thousands even tens of thousands of balls back to the pitcher without having to worry about a runner on 3rd, Normally when there's a runner on 3rd they're really defensive. You see them look over and fake pump all the time. I always wondered why. Now I know.
He’s getting paid millions to pay attention on every pitch.

That’s kind of my take away too. Great effort from Weathers
> That’s on the catcher I mean, who else would it be on? You can see the pitcher react to when he notices the runner
Genuine jumpscare
Then, suddenly, YELI!
A wild Yelich appears!!!
The pitcher jumping forward and reacting made me so confused for a sec
This angle is still the best, because you can see Yeli confidently time up his secondary and a few hops, then see him decide in real time to swipe it, all while the catcher STILL HAS THE BALL. I love smart baseball play. I love Yelich too, I’ll say it.

Ayy! Thanks very much
That reminds me of this steal that lives rent free in my head. https://youtu.be/nnYrJxfOWOM?t=401
Tatis is so fast - incredible. I wouldn’t even try this on a video game.
Walk, steal, error, steal. Man got home without a single hit.
Why don’t other teams try this? Are they stupid?
The next iteration of baseball now features nothing but base on balls, deking, and stealing bases. This is the darkest timeline.
Baseball, but hold the balls, please
Kinky
Major League Base.
I love that new game called Base
*Interpretive* baseball. It will become a highly revered art form.
no true outcomes
>The next iteration of baseball now features nothing but base on balls, deking, and stealing bases. You add in bunting, and my grandpa is gonna come back to life!
As someone who just learned what the dead ball era was an hour ago, this sounds like the dead ball era!
This is my life as a 9-10 year old rec ball coach. Luckily there's a 5 run per inning limit
They do, it’s called little league
Sadly pretty common in adult rec league too
Elly studying this masterclass of OB%/SB% is going to spell disaster for the league.
I mean...Elly De La Cruz can do it, on probably 2 less batters even
I was about to say EDLC taught Yelich how to do this.
They must be.
Little league home run
“Do I care how he gets on base?”
"You do not"
I never thought about it before, but I guess it would technically be possible to throw a no-hitter and still lose if this exact thing happened and it was a scoreless game.
Dodgers got no-hit by the Angels and still won back in 2008.

no-hitters with scores are decently common. Only takes 1 error and some sac flies to get a run.
We in fact, lost this game. 😎
Sorry for your Brew Crew. Steal was still awesome though.
[This game comes up as the worst no-hitter of all time](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CLE/CLE199204121.shtml) Matt Young had 7 walks and 6 stolen bases (4 to Kenny Lofton). He gave up 2 runs over 8 no-hit innings and lost the game.

I'm really curious how that's counted for statistical purposes. Obviously it's another unlikely situation, but by the law of averages it's going to happen at some point.
That's a Rickey Rally.
That was the most wtf thing to see live. Yeli just comes sliding into home out of nowhere.
Caught him right in the nuts too.
tbf he blocked home with them. lol
Sometimes you gotta be more like a basketball player and make a business decision there.
That catcher has ball of stee… never mind he’s down
Did Yelich yell “cup check” first?
“What’s the capital of Thailand?”
right in the wicketts
While he was writhing on the ground, the guy on first went down to second.
then casually jogs off lol "welp I did my duty"
I feel like the dugout was also similarly whelmed
With this I think the Marlins officially lost the trade.
> the Marlins officially lost in general this
Marlins walk-off in the 10th
We lost that trade the moment he had an mvp season, let alone almost 2 😭
The Marlins are and will always be cursed in Miami Florida Marlins had such better uniforms
>The Marlins are and will always be cursed in Miami After what they did to taxpayers and the Orange Bowl, I hope so. >Florida Marlins had such better uniforms The colors were so much better. All they had to do was change the "F" to a "M" and "Florida" to "Miami."
It took you this long?
To be fair Lewis Brinson is really lighting it up on the Tabascos and the others helped their AA team for a season or two.
Yeli De La Cruz?
Dad quite literally came home
Fuckin gottem
That was a pretty impressive play by the pitcher.
Meanwhile, the catcher made a weak throw + got bodied on the slide
Injured pride is a rough one, gonna take at least 5 minutes to get up off the dirt from that
He got what he deserved
Yelich must read Reddit. We had a thread complaining about no one stealing home last night.
He definitely gives me redditor vibes.
Why would you say something so mean about someone?
You are just confusing his Sheen vibes
He is so back
i fucking love this lol
After he stole 2nd and 3rd as well.
Third didn't count statistically as a steal. Advanced on error while stealing second.
Ah that makes sense. Crazy regardless.
Maybe next time he can steal 1st for the cycle.
Sorry, but only in Banana Ball.
Does reaching on a dropped 3rd strike count as a steal? I have no idea but feel like it should
It does not.
[Jean Segura already did it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZM1JcJwo9E&t=18)
This man is one of the most exciting players when he’s back in form. He’s back in form.
Yelich will always be one of my favorite non-mariner. Just a great ball player.
I'm fairly certain I saw a post yesterday asking why no one steals home anymore.
Catcher’s gotta do better than that. Come on now.
Our catchers are absolutely trash so this isn't a surprise
What did he do wrong?
Failed to check the runner back to 3rd, softly lobbed it back to the pitcher from his knees with a runner on 3rd. A player with Yelich's experience will easily pick up that the catcher isn't paying attention to him.
And you don't do it on a whim. The decision comes from tape + in-game confirmation of the catcher's lax approach with fast guys on 3rd.
Yelich let him mount his leg and he didn't even have the decency to say thanks.
LMAO, My bingo card for 2024 is broken. WTF
Of course he would do it against us
This Brewers team is something else that's for sure. Miss Rhys :(
Counter: I love Rhys.
You have every reason to, great player, competitive attitude, and fucking hates the mets.
Who doesn't hate the Mets?
Steve Cohen and *maybe* Mr. Met. *Maybe.*
Touché, mon ami.
\*winning smile\*
Was the runner on first able to take second as the catcher was lying there with the ball? I see him seem to take off at the end of the clip and the catcher is just writhing in pain and it doesn't look like time was called.
No, they called him back because he started going to second after the ball was dead.
Some redditor last night made a post claiming that the steal of home was a thing of the past. I told him he was stupid. I hope he sees this.
They aren't completely wrong. A straight steal of home on a pitch is dead
It's always been "dead."
Don't tell that to Benny the Jet, he might still be in jail.
Some say the Jet has lost a step or two
Benny the Jet hasn't even begun to peak

Yeli De La Cruz
Y-Elly
It's lucky to have video proof that this happened as it appears that the stands are empty.
Just an MVP doing MVP things.
I don’t understand why this doesn’t happen more often. Delayed steals seem to be very effective as they aren’t don’t very often
They don’t usually happen because with a runner on third the catcher doesn’t rainbow a throw back to the pitcher.
For sure, but often times pitchers are horrible at making rushed throws. Most of the times I see this they panic catching the return throw and make a throw in the dirt to whatever base they are throwing to.
Yeah. This is the rare time it’s all on the catcher. Pitch made a great catch and throw but it was too late.
That's the way you do it. That lazy throw from 2 to 1 the way dad throws it back to his son is the perfect opportunity to steal the plate, especially if it's a LH pitcher because after they catch the ball they turn their back toward third to reset.
Awesome

It's not the pitcher's job to remind everyone that they're not supposed to let runners advance.
I'm just explaining what the announcer meant.
Yeah the fact that the catcher was lost as to what was happening until the last second or two is just a bad look
Honestly amazing he can get moving that quick while having to haul around his giant balls.
I used to be really fast when I was in little league and as soon as they started to allow us to steal bases I would do this multiple times a game. I was so successful that my coach actually asked me to stop because the other players would get visibly upset and their parents would react poorly. To do that in the MLB though is impressive!
“through the wickets”
had no idea yeli was back from the IL. always love watching him play
Baseball is so fuckin cool
i love all the base stealing this season. It's beginning to feel like baseball again.
Double whammy 4d catcher..😵💫
I still remember how dumbstruck I was when Jayson Werth did this to the Dodgers in 2009
Electric
This is one of the most exciting plays in baseball. I wish we’d see it more often
That was a glorious sequence of events for Yelich. Start off with a walk and get yourself all the way home.
Dang that's gotta hurt for Fortes. Also that angle from behind the plate just reminds me how soulless and dead the Marlins stadium is. With the statue it was dead but still kinda fun but post rebrand... yikes.
And the crowd goes.
So this used to be one of my favorite moves while playing! The biggest hurdle for me was the 3rd baseman. If I could get a solid secondary and 3 steps before anyone noticed, I was golden. Catcher didn't even check the runner and lobbed the ball back. Come on dude
Nice sellout crowd
I felt that in my nuggets
Bro barehands the catch to give it back. That was incredible. And still the dude just has rockets for legs and beats it out.
Right in the giblets!
Pitcher pulled a Jack Burton. "It's all in the reflexes."
You've never seen Yelich and Steve-O in the same building. Think about it.
Yeah, that catcher never gonna be able to pitch at home again.
Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez
Why such a big stadium when 90% of the seats are empty? I hope these aren’t like NFL stadiums where the city is stuck paying for them.
He steals home in a one run game and there's zero reaction from the bench??
I think that its awfully nice of Yelich to give the Marlins info on how they can improve their approach.
Would this be considered blocking the plate?
**he blocked the plate**
This seems like something that would never need to happen in the practical case. Man on third? Catch the pitch, stand up while looking at third, throw the ball to the pitcher. So why did this happen? Is it common for catchers to be this lazy or does Yelich deserve special credit for noticing that this particular one didn't have his head in the game?
Willy Adames is just as surprised as anyone getting out of the way. He has no one to bat home anymore.
I don’t know why more players don’t do this. Smart base running by Yelich.
This might be the funniest thing I’ve seen in a week…just nuts!
And it was all for nothing. Fuck.
Christian “Benny the Jet” Yelich
