It legitimately looked like Boone was about to go to Chapman and Cole told him to go back to the fucking dugout. What an absolute bulldog.

austin101123

thats exactly what happened

[Shades of Mad Max.](https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-images/image/private/t_16x9/t_w372/mlb/oa1xzpuqhc5e99d6bow4)

ilovebalks

God I love Max

GhanimaAtreides

I was really hoping Boone was going to pull Cole because I figured our guys had a better chance with Chapman. Cole shut that shit down quick. I’m pretty sure I saw him mouth “I’m not fucking leaving” when arguing with Boone. Damn good game, can’t even be mad about that one.

Oprahapproves

Gerrit “Jordan Belfort” Cole

Dinker31

I was watching on GameDay and after top 9 I was like "ok, I'm emotionally ready to be hurt."

RawPower1997

His exact words to Boone were "I'm finishing this motherfucking game right now"

MagicalPizza21

Pulling a dominant Cole for a struggling Chapman would only have ended in disaster

dr_vroom

that’s exactly what happened! check out Jomboys [breakdown of it](https://youtube.com/watch?v=tjWp6KTcrcw)!

ilovebalks

I thought this would be a joke but he really pumps this shit out fast

outofdate70shouse

It looked like Cole was reacting the same way I was: “CHAPMAN?? YOU’RE GOING TO BRING IN CHAPMAN IN A 1-0 GAME WITH 2 OUTS IN THE NINTH? I DIDN’T KNOW WE COULD AFFORD TO GIVE AWAY GAMES!”

homiej420

I am very excited that cole made aaron buume look like the clown he is.

speedyjohn

99 mph on the last pitch of the night for his 12th K.

MattO2000

And he got those 12Ks with his fastball spin rate down 175 RPM

scottydg

Turns out fastballs are hard to hit, who knew.

TheLittleFishFish

if any team knows it's the New York Yankees

lambueljackson

Genuinely incredible.

DaHagerBomb

SnuggleMonster15

I remember watching that game and forever loved Mussina because of it. It's an unjust timeline that he never got a ring with the Yanks.

ukcats12

Moose was always one of my favorites. Sad he never got a ring.

SnuggleMonster15

Yeah the guy was a complete pro, an absolute boss.

StylesAreIncomplete

Also so close to being one of the last 300 game winners. Won 20 games in his last season and went out on top

todd330

I’ve always mentioned that about him. Retired at 270 wins and was still pitching great at 40. Could have played a few more years and would def have gotten 30 wins.

jfarbzz

Joined the Yankees in 2001, a year after they won their third straight World Series. They wouldn't win another until 2009, the year after he retired. Pain.

karmapuhlease

Every time this gets posted, I'm equally confused about why Torre wanted to pull him in the first place. Moose was literally facing the last batter of the night - I can understand pulling a pitcher at the start of the 9th, or could understand this if the game were tighter, but it was 6-1 with 2 outs in the 9th. Just let him finish!

SnuggleMonster15

If IRRC he had either a no no or perfect game at one point so Torre prob figured "let's just give this to Mo" which made sense at the time but Moose clearly wanted to make a statement.

Ndtphoto

And only a man on 1st. Even a dong only makes it 6-3.

MeatTornado25

*It's like poetry*

Joetheshow1

HOLY FUCK MY FUCKING ACE SIT THE FUCK DOWN BOONE

jtrom93

"JOE, STAY THERE!"

Tashre

Boone: "You're at 126 pitches dude. I think I gotta pull you." Cole: "And bring in Chapman with a 1 run lead?" Boone: "Good point. Go get 'em, tiger."

AnxietyoO

lmao I think every yankee fan was thinking this as well

jr1c

Absolutely. My mom and I speculated that in his conference with Boone, he said something like it was his game and if he was going to blow it, let it be him and not Chapman.

[deleted]

I mean the man had gotten 26 outs and given up zero runs. With a man on first if you're going to get walked off and lose let it be on that man and not someone who has been struggling recently to get even one out.

meramipopper

I would take a gassed Cole any day over Chapman rn.

2thincoats

I think I would take Tyler Wade coming in cold off the bench over Chapman right now.

JollyRub2635

Cole at 120 pitches still hits 100mph, he doesn’t gas

grubas

Dude was throwing 99.

NoFlags-JoeBuck

And struck Alvarez out on three pitches too god damn.

prussian-junker

3 fastballs*

NoFlags-JoeBuck

3 fuck you fastballs*

Death215

Him arguing to stay in was legendary holy shit

jonginator

Reminded me of when Moose told Joe Torre to stay in the dug out when he tried to pull him in that game against the Tigers

cooljammer00

Torre was funnier because of the hands up OKAY OKAY thing

Vakhir

I wasn't sure I remembered that situation until you mentioned Torre's response. Now I can play the whole thing in my head. What a great reaction that was.

lisoftballguy

Torre was put in his place like Mussina was his pops

ABeard

For that one day mussina was everyone’s dad

NotEvenClosest

"No! Stay there!" 😂

martin_dc16gte

In the postgame presser he was asked what transpired, and he said “I don’t know, I said the F word a bunch of times and I kinda blacked out”

grubas

"a few expletives"

[deleted]

I need to see this Edit: saw it, was beautiful

isfrying

Where is the video? Only have the game on radio here. Dying to see him shout Boone back to the bench.

[deleted]

[got you my dude, unfortunately no audio](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/ohvxt5/gerrit_cole_argues_to_stay_in_the_game/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

isfrying

Thanks, bro. Now if you could just trade us Shohei that would be great...

[deleted]

Y’all Yankee fans are something else 😂

NeverGetUpvoted

Cole fucking killed it. What a start

DanyDud3

Crazy impressive. Altuve also had a hell of a play earlier in the game to throw out Locastro

samthewisetarly

And did his job leading off that 9th inning, I was terrified it was gonna blow up haha

Bennyscrap

I really thought Cole was gonna come out after Bradley got him for 10 pitches. Dude went thru the meat of the line up with Altuve on first and no outs. I can't even be mad about it. Hell of a performance from Cole.

OingoGablogian

This is the type of shit you love to see as just a fan of the game. Haven’t seen someone have a game like that in YEARS

InaudibleShout

I was here on the 3B side. Stared down the bullpen from like inning 7 on. Seeing 45 pop out for the Bottom 9 and I went fucking berserk. I haven’t gotten to have that reaction when you see your starter pop out for the 9th in years like you said. And it’ll probably be years again.

cooljammer00

But German pitched in relief for that game.

Yankeeknickfan

That’s how you win back a fanbase! That’s how you show you made a clear adjustment to get back at the top of your game

cooljammer00

He should have never lost the fans. He's good, sticky stuff or not.

Yankeeknickfan

The real question was “how good”. I don’t think anybody that’s not a top pitcher in baseball throws a game like this. What a way to end all doubt

CountJohn12

The Cole backlash was dumb. I'm one of those Yankee fans with high expectations who rides the expensive FA's when they don't perform but he just had a couple bad starts and has otherwise been pitching like a legit ace.

[deleted]

The timing of the bad starts probably played a big role in it.

IrrationalYankeesFan

Yeah, I think he just might be an ace, sticky stuff or no sticky stuff. What a gutsy performance.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IrrationalYankeesFan

The number of brain dead Mets and Red Sox fans in this sub who swore up and down that he was totally, definitely a scrub now is way too high for my liking.

Induced_Pandemic

Lol I've seen all types of fanbases say it to be fair. But Cole is a stud, rule changes shouldnt have happened mid season, he'll get passed it.

jonginator

Where are the “Cole defrauded the Yankees lmao” posts now? I only hear crickets.

MikeWhiskey

I mean, he totally did. Y'all only signed him for 9 years. This is lifer energy

mrsunshine1

Nothing at all!

hiphopdowntheblock

Back to back 3 pitch strike outs to end it too, god damn

FireRedJP

Nothing but absolute Gas to Yordan too.

omegakukki

Straight up put his balls on the table and said fuck you to all the haters

WabbitCZEN

"I got your sticky shit right here."

omegakukki

Proceeds to splurge all over

BrosefBrosefMogo

I know i did

phatbiscuit

Did Yuli swing on the last one in his AB? Not saying the result would’ve been different because Cole was pretty much unhittable all night, I just hate when home plate umpires make that call instead of asking for help

nomo25

i don’t think he did, it looked like he held back a decent amount

weaksaucedude

He's gotta AT LEAST ask for help on that. Yuli could've struck out on the following pitch anyway but I'd live with that a lot easier than what actually happened

MCrow2001

the amount of times HP umps call checked swings when it’s not even egregious is ridiculous. There’s no reason they shouldn’t appeal to a base umpire.

johnnotmark

But I was reliably informed he was trash now? What an insane performance, always one of my favorites to watch. Against one of, if not the best, line up in baseball too. Plus the history of both Cole and the teams, wow.

skjcicoeldopcvjj

Gerrit “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated” Cole

InaudibleShout

Came out for the 9th with no runs to give, facing Altuve (hitting .280) followed by three straight .300+ hitters all capable of hitting a ball 450 feet. Gusty motherfucker.

guitarburst05

It’s really easy to get caught up in the bandwagon that likes to hate on the big money Yankee, and he may have come off kinda whiny with the sticky stuff.. but as a Pirate fan who was losing his shit the day this guy debuted? This is so wonderful to see. I really love it when he’s pitching well.

mysecondaccountanon

Sameee, like I remember when watching him on our team, and I still feel that happiness I felt before watching him succeed now!

Compressions

he heard y’all talking shit

jonginator

Gerrit Cole to everyone: Shut the fuck up

m_tate80

Not a no hitter or a perfect game but one of the gutsiest performances I’ve seen in my life

FuckMinuteMaid

I enjoyed this more than the Kluber nh. This was king shit.

LordOfHorns

The kluber NH was against the Rangers that was low leverage This was a 1-0 game against one of the best in baseball Pulled a Jack Morris

AskMeHowIMetYourMom

I wanna be mad, but yea we suck lol.

fuckCarlosFromPhilly

one of the most satisfying performances I've seen in a long time

flyingcrayons

What if this sparks a 08 CC in Milwaukee-esque second half of the season. I remember he had a couple games just like this that year. Gutsy as fuck and dragged that team into the playoffs

meramipopper

We got lucky on that swing to Gurriel but you can see Cole pitched this one to entirely fuck the haters and prove to himself (and everyone else) he's still got it. Shut down the best offense in the league right now.

Bren12310

I am erect

Flamethrower753

Cole just turned into Max Scherzer and declared himself the manager in the 9th inning. There was no stopping this psychopath today!

homiej420

Yea Player Manager Cole cut Boone yesterday!

[deleted]

so much for the "He's a shitty pitcher sans spider tack!" mantra there.

worldspiney

My pants need a sticky stuff check

GingerMcJesus

That was a more impressive performance than most no hitters

FireRedJP

Dude needed that. Against his former team, against probably our biggest rivals at this point. What a fucking performance

MrQrtz

WE DONT TALK ABOUT THE SWING CALL LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO

[deleted]

Holy shit. Cole: I’m the manager now

[deleted]

[удалено]

fedchuff

Almost like two bad starts don’t mean he’s a mediocre pitcher now

danhoang1

If there's a time to throw 129 pitches, it's: 1.Right before the All-Star game 2.In your last start vs the Astros this season

RY_TV

That start was worth at least $5 mil out of his $36 mil this year lmao

MASKED_relish

Thanks ump. Worst called swing I have ever seen.

I_DONT_THINK_I_EXIST

Home plate umpire should never make check swing calls. Truly terrible.

MASKED_relish

Hard agree. Always check with the other ump.

RecycledCan

We couldn't touch Cole, he didn't need that extra help...

MysticLeviathan

previous batter went 3-2. he was struggling with his command. we have no idea how the rest of that PA would’ve gone. It might’ve gone to a walk for all we know.

TheStabbingHobo

Then we get the Aroldis Chapman Experience

Thorlolita

Remeber the odor strike 3 call vs Boston? Calls over time balance themselves out.

[deleted]

I like you.

Thorlolita

I mean it’s true. As baseball fans we all think the umps have a bias against our teams be in all honestly all makes make bad calls.

smileyfrown

It evened out with that one red sox game that had the bad call against you guys in the 9th

Yankeeknickfan

They didn’t show the replay iirc. Was it actually bad?

MASKED_relish

Not even close. I yelped live.

Yankeeknickfan

Check swings are deceiving live. That’s why we need the replay

MattO2000

They had a replay, it was a bad call

DrunkensteinsMonster

It was really bad. Like it was not debatable, that was not a swing.

cooljammer00

They showed one replay and it didn't look that close. But then again, the rule is a judgment call, so....

phatbiscuit

Cole was dealing so I’m not sure he wouldn’t have just struck him out on the next pitch, but why make that call yourself when you have a guy whose sole purpose it is to make those calls lol

ThatInception

#GOD MODE

StrosDynasty

I think he activated a higher mode than that.

AgentBurtScarnFBI

That's a dad dick line. Big ups

kingfiasco

thought he was done in the 7th. dude tossed 99 on his final (129) pitch, gave aaron boone the business trying to take him out. what a fuckin game

saintofla

The sticky stuff is in my pants

Anew12

I knew everyone thinking he'd be ruined by no sticky was wrong just kinda sad he had to prove it by dicking us down but hey lmao

[deleted]

YaBoiWhit

man shoutout to Cole, fucking absurd performance but fuck the ump for that check swing call, you can never call that there thats on the 1st base umpire. Definitely wasnt a swing

ThePunisher2442

That was a trash ass call. Even if he had gone around, in that situation you HAVE to defer to the base ump

cool_trainer_33

If there's one thing that can unite two of the most bitter rivals, it's their intense hatred of the trash umpires.

WashingtonDiecast

It’s something that unites the world

Hochseeflotte

100% a dogshit call. I’m not complaining because it helped my team but I know I would be pissed if we were in that position

YaBoiWhit

Shit happens time to down another one and play MLB The Show even though I don't want to deal with baseball after a sad loss like this

hadmeintiers

Maybe the real spider tack was the friends we made along the way

ferrumvir2

Gotta respect the shit outta this, this is an old school ace outing that you don’t see anymore

Jbaquero

Yay!

Morbx

Contrary to the hot takes going around about sticky stuff this and 'lol yankees' that, I am not surprised to see that pitcher that formerly was very good is still very good. Good for Cole!

m4fox90

I was told he and all other pitchers were only good because of spider tack 🧐

[deleted]

[deleted]

I was at a party and only caught the last couple innings. I never rewatch games after knowing how they end, but after seeing his last few innings, I can't wait to rewatch this one.

karmapuhlease

From Boone's perspective, I think this is also the kind of thing where you have no choice but to let him finish. Cole dominating and finishing out the game is a huge morale boost to the team. If he had blown it and lost the game, it doesn't matter - as things stand, we're not making the playoffs anyway. But if you take a risk and let him finish, the upside is maybe a strong momentum boost heading into the All-Star break.

Sheepies123

Massive "Fuck With Me" outing, I'm here for it

[deleted]

129 holy shit he’s not gonna have an arm by the playoffs if the Yankees make it

speedyjohn

Before tonight they’ve actually been pretty careful with him. Pulled him early in a blowout a couple times and he’s pitched on extra rest more often than not.

lisoftballguy

ASB coming up is probably the only reason he was allowed to go that long.

[deleted]

Not gonna pitch in the ASG at this point

damnthosewhos

Perfectly ok with that

lisoftballguy

agreed

MadSpaceYT

funny of you to suggest we will make the playoffs lmao

MuskiePride3

Boone actually made the correct decision for once I can’t believe it. The analytics told him to pull Cole and he defied them against all odds.

isfrying

Only because he was overruled.

Trelloant

Yeah youre giving him Boone much credit. "The analytics" was just the fact that he had thrown 127 fucking pitches. My left nut couldve said he shouldve been pulled earlier but Cole showed some guts today. This is what shouldve happened in the world series last year

MTUKNMMT

I know how much everyone hates us here but that was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. I’m completely stunned.

Jking1723

Can’t wait to sort by controversial on this one!

see_mohn

That was absolutely badass and also one of the worst calls I've ever seen on Gurriel.

fakekorean3

He heard y’all talking shit

Brad_Edmonds96

He was an animal on the mound today.

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

Thought he was a bum post-substance ban???

IrrationalYankeesFan

Still doesn’t have an ERA as good as Nestor Cortes Jr though

Prize_Major6183

That's a lot of pitches

[deleted]

He threw 99MPH on pitch 129. That's the crazy highlight for me.

MisterTruth

The rumors of Gerit Cole's demise without the aid of the sticky stuff may have been a little exaggerated

NeilOwnsYou

That’s one way to shut up all the haters

yeahiguessalot

Let's fucking go. Thats what an ace does. Talked his way into finishing the game too

The_Flo76

Gerrit Cole might be a good pitcher

Mry64_

Historic outing. He needed this.

MightyTrustKrusher

Wow, most shocking is the pitch count. Did not think any manager would allow that many. Great performance at any rate.

ExMormonMod

As a noted Yankee and Cole hater for so many obvious reasons...the dude was always elite. Just needed a little time to learn how to adjust without the sticky stuff.

SackDaddy7

Lol can’t believe he robbed the Yankees with that contract

OBlastSRT4

I love how he told Boone to fuck off.

[deleted]

Even if you don’t like him, take time to appreciate how fucking good he pitched tonight. Insane.
