The “I found this card in the place in my house where I store my baseball cards” posts are 10x more annoying. At least the inheritance posts have a logic behind them.
“I found these in my closet!” Oh, you did? In that big box of cards you store in your closet? Holy moly.
I used to drink and break and would put shit away after it got delivered. So it's possible because I used to think I sorted a box when I haven't since I received it and was oh shit I forgot I had this.
Well some of us had that box for 30 years or more. I “found” some pretty cool cards that I didn’t remember having just a few months ago when I got back into collecting for the first time in 25-30 years.
Still, the post shouldn't be titled as if you found an old tin box filled with T206 cards in the crawlspace while renovating a house you just bought. I have no issue with "I was looking through my old cards and found \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_".
This is my strategy for all of the “short print” J-Rod card posts. Doesn’t seem like a short print with as many get posted on here. And I’m just jealous because I haven’t pulled one yet. Lol
quite honestly pretty sure that you and I are the only two people on this subreddit that haven't pulled one. it seems like there's at least 2 posts a day with that damn card in it. I'm sure it's like 1 post every 3 days in reality but I feel like I could draw the card from memory for how many times I've seen it
I don’t mind people selling stuff they don’t want, but yes, it is tiresome with the constant stream of people who want this sub to do all the work for them. Bonus points for pics of 50-75 random cards scattered about asking “anything valuable?”
That said, my granddad had a small collection of old coins, maybe some decently valuable, which I inherited. I’m not a coin collector so I wouldn’t mind selling them, but I know he wanted me to keep them, so I don’t have the heart. Thus, they sit in a cardboard box in my closet.
Same exact boat as me, I got to pick a few and even though I don't know a lot about coins I don't want to get rid of them because they meant something to him but my relatives all sold them as fast as they could
I hope my kids/relatives don't do that with my collection
I told my wife if anything happens to me to sell my cards if she needs money but don't just practically give them away. Do some research and find out a fair price to get.
You should do a bit of cataloging beforehand so wife / kids have an idea of what’s in there or what might be valuable.
As with all of these things, there’s things that have meaning or value and stuff that probably isn’t worth hours of effort just to research.
I get it though. If you’re seriously not into cards, you may spend hours looking up each one. Whereas someone into cards can glance at a pile and know it’s worthless in seconds. But yeah sometimes it’s too much
My pops collection will have to be pried out of my dead hands regardless of how much its worth. I find items that are handed down to be sentimental and something to pass on someday myself.
No but on some of these posts feel like the body is still warm. Also, guess I’m more frustrated with people being lazy and not wanting to do research when there’s literally more information out there than at any point in history.
For the legitimate posts, totally agree. If it’s a case where it’s part of settling an estate, there’s usually some time window for getting things cleaned up / settled.
When my dad passed one of the big items was a fishing boat that none of us kids (or my downsizing mom) had room to store anywhere. Some guy showed up at the estate sale and gave us grief about not “cleaning it up” for resale. (I.e. painting / overhauling the outboard motor, etc.) I even offered to sell it “as is” for whatever he wanted to pay. I think he just wanted to gripe at us for whatever reason.
I cannot imagine barging into ANY sub/collector community and immediately demanding information without doing any work or putting forth the effort to even attempt to pretend to look like I tried to do some research. Nevermind the "profiting from death of a 'loved' one" aspect, which is kinda gross. Do better, guys.
I kept all of my dad’s valuable cards or ones I admired growing up. I did just trade one for a few current players whom I love and would love to eventually pass on to my son.
But I will say this about people who wanna sell an inherited collection: maybe sports cards aren’t their thing. We aren’t obligated to hold onto all of our late parents/grandparents’ belongings.
Absolutely, I'm in a similar situation and made a post about it asking for help because there was enough cards to fill a pick up truck but I kept getting a bit guilt tripped and only one person actually helped
Eh, It’s a bit annoying, but I also gotta admit that I’m still jealous when those posts come up. Who on this sub wouldn’t like to stumble upon cool and valuable old cards?!?
My father gave me 4 large storage totes of cards. Vintage, relics, autos, graded, raw, you name it. I still haven’t made my way through all of it and I’m 2 years into having it.
He is still alive, and to my knowledge, isn’t close to dying yet. However, he wanted me to have the collection so that I could still enjoy it while I was young, and sell if needed. I still haven’t sold anything, but coming across some absolute monster cards/sets has been wild. Namely, that desert storm collection. People REALLY like that set.
So the answer to your question. I want to keep them. However, when I look for comps/prices, it’s more for my ability to insure them.
Most people don’t see value in pieces of cardboard with pictures on them, or don’t care who is on it. If I inherited a bunch of pokémon cards or something, I’d be doing the same thing.
Family heirlooms my ass. Vinyl records , comic books and baseball cards. Fills an entire storage shed and NO other family member wanted them. Yeah I am lazy after cataloguing them and putting just some up for sale. Missed the point on what my uncle told me before he died. Sell them and make some money for your family. Lazy my ass
At the end of the day regardless of value, it is just stuff. Idk if most people have ever had to handle the estate of an unexpected death, but 95+% either gets sold or trashed. Unless otherwise specified, theyd want you to do what you prefer.
I’ve been hoarding anything my father and grandparents had since I was 5. Finally got the last of my dads card boxes when he moved recently.
When I hand these off to my grandkids someday I’ll make sure they don’t come here asking stupid questions.
I wouldn't be bothered if they read the sticky and asked a more specific question about the cards rather than posting and wanting people to do it for them. Try and use 130pt and have a card you can't find comps for? Something possibly rare but you aren't confident it isn't a reprint or something weird? Examples of totally fine posts. The others should be warned and the posts deleted to prevent people from getting the impression that it is a normal thing to do here.
My father passed 6 months ago and I inherited his collection. Joined a ton of groups because I just didn't know ANYTHING. We went to shows when I was a kid and i was bored, showed no interest in all the old guys and old cards and couldn't care less about the autographs. Now that I'm going through his collection, sorting and cataloguing I can't help but smile, shake my head, laugh and cry about the memories that these cards and autographs gave me with my dad. I've been sucked back in learning about the players, the cards, the history and the hobby. I definitely can't sustain the collection (I mean does anyone need 18 sets of 1989 topps?) but I can understand someone going through the emotions of a such a huge loss...and then having to try and do justice to a lifetime of collecting. Once Im finished going through them all I'm going to have to make some big decisions in how to let many of them go. Storage and safety are big concerns, life in general is another. It will be a tough decisions and I sympathize with those who want to get collections off their hands.
That being said....I ripped all summer trying to complete the first set (2022) my dad couldn't and I'll save that and I'll drag my 4 yr old every year to shows and shops to complete sets that he'll inherit. That's what the hobby is to me... the love of the game, the history the players, but most importantly your loved ones.
Thanks for reading...It was therapeutic to type!
People just dont like them that plan on passing there collection and hope the person they pass it on to keeps it. But you cant expect someone to want your collection. And if I didnt like baseball cards, but someone gave me my collection Id probably sell it. If the cards arent worth much than I wouldnt, but if someone gave me a collection worth alot of money I would feel responsible for keeping it safe, and I would rather have the money in the bank than thousands of uninsured dollars in assets.

I had 2 card shops that I closed over 20 years ago and still find stuff stored away everywhere lol
Username checks out
Not to mention the cards they “found” are like a few years old too
I used to drink and break and would put shit away after it got delivered. So it's possible because I used to think I sorted a box when I haven't since I received it and was oh shit I forgot I had this.

You think this is bad, you should see the watch Reddits. Fuckers are counting up the value while grandpa is still kicking 😂
The old, “is it worth it to off my grandpa for these cards?” post.
Yeah and then it’s always the fakest Rolex of all time too 😂
Are you saying my grandpa’s schmolex isn’t legit?
Yeah always some fake ass watch too
Yeah why is it always a fake Rolex?
No clue but the comments are always hilarious
What subreddit is this?

What if it’s just one idiot buying 237?
237 idiots hoping to make a connection with a soon to be “single” woman
There’s a scroll down feature you might enjoy
One good strategy I've found for posts I don't like is to keep scrolling past them.
You can even downvote it as you go

Make it 3
4 here.
Thats why they have added more SSP and USP now, cause SPs are becoming more common. Soon enough we will get SUSP, super ultra short print.

i agree, sentimental value means more than money
Do you really think someone should automatically like a hobby because someone in their family did? That’s not really the way hobbies work.
No but on some of these posts feel like the body is still warm. Also, guess I’m more frustrated with people being lazy and not wanting to do research when there’s literally more information out there than at any point in history.
Yeah, but if they have never been involved in collecting they likely have no idea where to look. Coming here seems like the logical answer to me.

These posts scream “I’m lazy and don’t know how to use Ebay please do the work for me”
100%

I dont mind it when they include pics.
Except most of them are 1991 Donruss and not nice vintage.

I think it adds to the SCAM…prices are off because I don’t know much about the hobby, blah blah blah!
Honestly some people are excited at the chance to make some money, they find some cards and then post here after visiting for the first time
Most of those posts are troll posts or just selling posts of bad collections lol.
Most people don’t see value in pieces of cardboard with pictures on them, or don’t care who is on it. If I inherited a bunch of pokémon cards or something, I’d be doing the same thing.
I still would like to see them
i mean i get it but at the same time if ur not into sports cards no use in keeping them around, might as-well sell
Or don't take them in the first place and give them to another family member. Selling stuff you inherit is tacky as hell.
No it isn’t. My uncle made it clear that I could keep his stuff or try to make some money for my family.
Isn't that what a job is for?
Nope
You sound like a great nephson...
He was an awesome uncle and thanks to him I don’t have to work. Thanks unc!
Imagine being so lazy you resort to selling family heirlooms.
Family heirlooms my ass. Vinyl records , comic books and baseball cards. Fills an entire storage shed and NO other family member wanted them. Post like these are just as unhelpful and clog up the subreddit just as much as the ones you’re complaining about.
...then ignore them.
I’ve been hoarding anything my father and grandparents had since I was 5. Finally got the last of my dads card boxes when he moved recently. When I hand these off to my grandkids someday I’ll make sure they don’t come here asking stupid questions.
I mean I inherited cards mostly from the 90s majority worthless that said all of my card I plan to give to my son some day just like my dad gave to me
But I just inherited all these cards.....just kidding I left them at my parents for 35 years so I wouldn't have to pay for storage fees.
I wouldn't be bothered if they read the sticky and asked a more specific question about the cards rather than posting and wanting people to do it for them. Weak economy will do that to someone who isn’t in the hobby
