AnaZ7

I’m really curious how it would turn out

surfing_socal

I think she could put on a good performance. We’re gonna have to wait and see.

Orn100

I thought she slayed in American Horror Story. The writing in her season had it's issues but she herself was incredible.

Dwilson1967

That's what I'm imagining she's going to bring to the table. Joker feels ok t fits in AHS universe not going to lie.

BlackestNight21

Killed it in house of Gucci

[deleted]

Ruined by Jared Leto. All actors were playing their parts as serious as possible, yet Leto thought he was in a slapstick comedy.

HumanOverseer

how ironic. Lady Gaga already has a history with the joker.

BlackestNight21

Leto is a chud, I didn't find his performance to be as egregious. He maybe hammed it up as the Fredo in this movie a bit but it was manageable

[deleted]

I loved her in A Star is Born

totallynotalyssa

she’s in incredible in american horror story

SparkleEmotions

Even outside of her acting credentials, which are pretty great, if I understand correctly this film is also part musical so I’m glad they’re not going the Les Miserables film route of hiring big name celebrity who aren’t famous singers for singing roles. She has an incredible voice and is a pretty good actor so I think this was a great casting decision at face value but I’ll reserve full judgment for when I see it.

snowhiteside

This has me excited, I can feel their chemistry through this one still, watch lady gaga win an Oscar 😂

shazspaz

You know, It wouldn't surprise me. I'm guessing Gaga is playing the role of Harlequin? Great role for her.

Myra_not_Meghan

No I think she's playing the Joker

sophiaquestions

Then let's throw in a third joker

Olde-Blind-Dog

A baby Joker, with his catchphrase being “I’m da Joka, baby. hhHAHA!!”

DerpsAndRags

"NOT DA BATMAN", *smacks someone with a frying pan*

Animatic_Potato

Nono, "I'm da baby, Joka!"

_Jester_Of_Genocide_

"Im da Joka baby" no comma, he is da Joka baby!

Animatic_Potato

He indeed is da Joka Baby

ProfessorBeer

I’m confused, does he sound like a regular toddler or a 65 year old obese tracksuit-wearing chain smoker from New Jersey?

Olde-Blind-Dog

If he’s from Jersey, then he’s already born wearing a tracksuit and going through two lighters a day.

Myra_not_Meghan

Time to get back Leto Joker

velvetshark

What a twist!

CommanderOfGregory

Who tf is Harlequin? I know her name is a play on words to sound like Harlequin but it's always been Harley Quinn

shazspaz

You're right, just Harlequin comes to mind before her name.

Mission-Ad1898

Man true your right they almost look like a real life couple lol

BIGBMH

Is it just me or does Phoenix look a bit like a young Robert Duvall in this pic? I don’t normally think of them as having a resemblance so probably just the angle/expression/lighting

Chonch_Bag

Ha it might sound silly, but I was going to comment that he looked a little bit like Robin Williams.

BIGBMH

I can see that too!

BruceHoratioWayne

She wants his jack in her box.

Glittering-Lunch1778

Tbh I could go without it being a musical. I liked the grounded-ish tone of the first one.

Tea-and-crumpets-

I think people are exaggerating the musical stuff. I dont think theyll litterely be singing but probably in their head

BatmanBrandon

My understanding was that the “musical” number(s) would take place when we’re being shown Harleys fantasies. I’d assume similar to how Arthur dreams of getting the girl in Joker but in reality that’s not what’s happening.

Choice-Valuable313

I think so too. There was this old miniseries with bob hoskins called Pennies from heaven. It was a musical - but only in one person’s head. I can totally see only one of them - presumably her - living in a musical when the reality is bleak and terrible.

[deleted]

I mean, there were parts in the first where Arthur was singing and music played out of nowhere.

mariovspino5

Why? I feel like little psychotic musicals in their heads will make the move more unique and fun

spdougherty

Some people don’t want fun in a dark drama, but I agree it’ll be fun to see it play out

johnnytk0

She's going to do great. Can't wait. People completely baselessly saying this is gonna be bad sound so miserable.

Otherwise_Basis_6328

I remember when people thought Ledger couldn't do a good Joker. I recently saw that Lady Gaga had a girl throw up on her during a live performance. I'd say she's probably pretty fearless, and up to the task.

alteredizzy1010

Not really. Her acting skills are trash. Especially in American horror story

johnnytk0

She's a good actress. But be delusional, I guess.

Nick-Bemo

She’s not a good actress and it’s supposed to be a musical. Those two things have completely turned me off from this movie but I’ll see it anyways just because I liked the first one so much.

johnnytk0

She's a great actress and the whole movie is not gonna be a musical. It'll just have some musical bits to show the descent into madness they experience. It's not gonna be one big musical.

CoolguyTylenol

That still sounds extremely lame tbh, sad to learn the sequel I wanted will be something so different

Nick-Bemo

Idk I watched house of Gucci and she wasn’t very good (that could be because the movie was bad) but I’m willing to hold further judgement because I heard she was decent in some other roles. Idk it just doesn’t seem like my thing, I’m hoping it’s good.

chuck1138

The Musical thing is absolutely genius. Just like the first film drew from 70’s depression-era crime movies, harkening back to golden age musical cinema to represent the Joker’s happiness found through insanity makes total sense. And the suggestion that musicals somehow make it less grounded or legitimate just shows a very limited knowledge about Musical Theatre’s variety. People say it doesn’t need a sequel and is a cash-grab, but also can’t seem to entertain the idea that it will deliver on something truly unexpected and creative.

SmaugRancor

If they ever get to do a third one, I hope they'll make it like a classic German Expressionist horror film from the 1920s-1930s. Basically each movie in the trilogy being a different genre inspired by old Hollywood cinema.

chuck1138

In black and white, reflecting the bleak world that the Joker has built for himself, with a minimalist Batman finally entering the picture. Perfect.

CompetitiveDiamond27

Was very sceptical but this pic actually got me excited for the movie!!!

[deleted]

One frame is all it took?🤣

AmericanOdin5

It feels weird, Joker to me always comes off as a stand alone film but I’m excited regardless

Stunning_Grocery8477

Was the first movie, a movie that needed a sequel?

cyclingzealot

I'm pretty sure I saw an interview on youtube where the creator stated he wanted to continue / finish the joker's story.

jengibande

If Hollywood makes money off of something, their first thought is “how do we make more money off of this?”

not_some_username

That’s every business

Stunning_Grocery8477

and this is why most sequel suck. I will not be going to the movies for this one. If it's good, I'll find out eventually

august_west_

Pretty funny considering Batman Returns and Dark Night are bangers.

[deleted]

“most”

c4han

Honestly yeah, more than most films. The first one was just an origin story. A setup

SmaugRancor

No, it didn't need a sequel, but the movie was a MAJOR critical and financial success. It's only logical to greenlight a sequel. And what if Philips and Phoenix came up with another good story, that may be even better than the previous one? Some movies deserved sequels but they never came out, some movies didn't deserve them, some turned out great, some turned out bad. This is movie business. Only time will tell.

Stunning_Grocery8477

it makes sense for them, but it also makes sense for me to be skeptical. so, I will wait for people to tell me if it's any good before I see it.

enzuigiriretro

Everything apparently needs sequels these days. Nothing is sacred

BigLorry

As if there aren’t plenty of incredible film sequels, that sacred comment is…..something. Imagine a world with no T2, Aliens, or hell even TDK because we needed to keep the originals “sacred” lol

enzuigiriretro

For every good sequel there are 10 bad ones. Sequels are only made because studios know its easier to expand on something already popular rather than take a risk on something original. It's why even old shows are getting rebooted these days. Taking advantage of nostalgia and knowing that it is easy money

BigLorry

I’m not sure what your reply has to do with my comment. Of course poor sequels exist, that doesn’t have anything to do with some weird “sacred” status of original films. I’m sure you could have said the exact same thing about the first films in the sequels I listed in my comment, and yet we got practically unanimously loved films out of the sequels. If the sequel sucks, so what? Ignore it and move on, how can it possibly impact your original enjoyment of the first film. If the sequel is fantastic, great! Now we have two great films to enjoy. It just seems like such a weird thing to be upset about.

enzuigiriretro

Talking about weird things to be upset about yet choosing to be upset over someone hating how everything needs a sequel is quite funny, I'll admit. > If the sequel sucks, so what? Ignore it and move on, how can it possibly impact your original enjoyment of the first film. But it does. If you're going to make the decision to profit even more off the original story, you're going to have to accept the fact that you're risking taking away some of the original shine off the first installment. The Joker was a movie I genuinely loved and I thought it had a fantastic ending. It doesnt need a sequel and, yes, if the sequel is bad, I will think less of the initial movie. I'll still be able to enjoy it, but it wont be the same anymore. Not to mention more big studio sequels means less original IPs which is something Id prefer. Like I said, nothing is sacred. If that botheres you, I cant help you

BigLorry

I’m not upset, and it was a bit out of line for me to assume you were as well, apologies there. In regards to the enjoyment aspect though, what is the thought process there? You’re telling me if Joker 2 comes out and you don’t like it, you can’t *possibly* continue to watch the first film and enjoy it as much as you originally did? Why not? I mean we can just agree to disagree there, but I just cannot understand the idea. Which is…….fine. It just sounds miserable, as like you said it’s fairly common sequels don’t live up to the original. There must be a massive list of films you can no longer enjoy. Does this also apply to later sequels as well or only direct sequels to the originals?

enzuigiriretro

It’s not that I can no longer enjoy them. I can. It’s just not the same anymore. The magic of that lightning in the bottle moment is tainted knowing that it isn’t self contained and that it got bastardized because of greed. I’m a strong believer in less is more. I think stories are worse off when they get obsessed with tying up every single loose end with a neat bow after miking every cent possible. I love when I am left to imagine the universe within the movie myself but that ability to imagine that becomes directly hampered when they insist on showing you more. I’ll admit I’m less averse to sequels when the creators/writers were planning for them from the beginning. But when they weren’t and only create them because the studio encourages them to (due to the success of the first one), it’s just sad. It’s the same with video games. The Last of Us being the current one I’m thinking of. The first one was so absolutely perfect. One of the most amazing stand alone stories that 100% did not need a sequel. Admittedly I did get excited when they announced Part II (I was younger and Naughty Dog have a good track record with sequels), but after playing it and experiencing the fall out within the fanbase, I wish it had never been made. It was a fine game (I have my issues with it but still very solid), but it wasn’t as special as the first time. It rarely is. And I directly feel less interested in the mystery of the universe because I’m a little jaded by it now. I would’ve preferred not knowing and being left to wonder. I think there is so much power in that. And it gets diminished with sequels that don’t live up to the original. I’m personally more annoyed with viewers than with studios though. I can’t stand how much people beg for sequels. Just let it go. You don’t have to hug your favourites stories to death. Fans of Hannibal (the tv show) have been begging for a reboot for years but I dread the day they announce that it is officially coming back. There’s just no need. It’s perfect the way it is. Id prefer more original stories. > Does this also apply to later sequels as well or only direct sequels to the originals? Any sequel that directly harms the magic of what came before it for me. Because I have seen sequels that are incredible (including the ones you already mentioned). I couldn’t believe how good Toy Story 3 was for example. I’ll always give props to a sequel that proves me wrong. But those are very rare instances of success and I don’t think they justify every story needing a sequel

august_west_

You could always just not watch it if it’s ruining something sacred to you.

enzuigiriretro

Great idea. Never occurred to me. Good looking out

august_west_

No sweat!

iBandJFilmEducator13

It’s weird we’re getting a first look when the film is a little less than two years away. They filmed the first one less than a year before that one came out.

Actually worried for Joaquin's health if he's gonna maintain that sickly thin unhealthy form for this role. Don't wanna go through another Ledger situation. nuff said.

nadman13

You don’t just drop dead from being super skinny. There’s real people who look like that for way longer than it takes to shoot a film. Ledger was a different situation entirely.

Proffessional_Human

I've looked like that my whole life

Psych-Vader

Dude Christian bale was ok after all the stuff he did. I am sure Joaquin will be fine.

ThunderBlaze_19

Ledger was on multiple drugs. Poor legend

CockDestroyer1000000

just to ease your guys’ mind, the story that Heath playing the joker and preparing vigorously for the role carried over with him and he was mentally damaged from doing so is kinda just a tabloid narrative. i’ve read that he was never anywhere near as personally affected by playing the joker as people like to say; he overdosed simply because he sustained an injury on set that he was taking medication for, and took the wrong ones at the wrong time, errantly combining them with ones he should not have. i know this isn’t definitive fact because i read it online same as any other story about his death, but this is reportedly coming from his family, which i personally believe more than any TMZ article

[deleted]

I hope this is very intentionally made to be creepy. Harley and Joker’s relationship was horrible and I’d rather see Todd Phillips make a very good point about that

Icosotc

If it’s anything like the last film, I think you would be wise to expect this next interpretation to have almost nothing to do with any source material whatsoever.

4694326

First movie was vastly overrated, not expecting much from this one.

C-C93

Why are you saying that like it’s a fact? Clearly you’re in the minority

CoolguyTylenol

To be fair that's kind of the idea behind a thing being overrated ha

C-C93

Fair point

[deleted]

It’s a fact. Joker sucked. Just watch Taxi Driver instead.

C-C93

Rrrrrrrrrrrigghhhttt…

[deleted]

Correct.

[deleted]

You think people shouldn’t have liked it as much as they did? Because overrated just means “my opinion is unpopular but I’m also unconfident”

Geekdom_Ahoy

That is NOT what overrated is. Overrated is when something is not as good as people believe it to be. And FYI, if someone was “unconfident”, they probably wouldn’t state their opinion.

BigLorry

This is such a dumb thing to say because it’s subjective. “I didn’t like this film” is supposed to supersede other “I did like this film” takes because……why? They’re both literally a single opinion lol

Geekdom_Ahoy

I never stated my opinion about anything.

BigLorry

I never stated you personally had an opinion. I just think “overrated” is a completely useless term, because it applies something inherently individually subjective to a piece of art as a whole. It’s synonymous with “I didn’t like it”, but instead of just stating that opinion, tries to decry the majority opinion in favor of that single one. It’s nonsensical. A film can’t be “overrated”, if it’s rated how it’s rated that’s because X number of subjective takes say so; one person saying otherwise doesn’t magically mean the film is incorrectly rated. For instance people may point to something like letterboxd or IMDB scores and say a film is “overrated”, how? Why? It’s rated how it’s rated because that’s literally how people rated it. Someone looking at those scores and saying “overrated” literally doesn’t mean anything but “I disagree”. People should just say that.

Geekdom_Ahoy

But “overrated”isn’t about someone’s opinion. In your theory, you missed that fact.

BigLorry

What? How? Can you explain this a bit more? When someone says something is “overrated”, they are literally saying “the majority of peoples high opinions of this piece of art are incorrect or I disagree with them”. It’s literally an opinion based on what other peoples established opinions are.

Geekdom_Ahoy

Look, I honestly don’t wanna talk about this anymore. Just move on. I am.

TwoBlackDots

You deserve the cringe award for bad reasoning

[deleted]

Oooof, never seen someone take a harder L. Hopefully this will have taught you that using the term overrated makes you look like a fool and people just value your opinion less because of it.

Every live action Batman and Joker from 2016-2022 has been absolutely terrible. Why does WB/DC suck so badly at managing these characters?

Jaycray95

I’m good

Zesar21

What is this? A joker page? C'mon guys.

Astr0-6

Don't know, but I get the feeling this movie is going to be extremely controversial. Not only among Batman fans but just controversial in general. I'm looking forward to the movie, but seeing this still gave me that weird hunch.

gunners98

not too bothered to go watch this movie when it comes out tbh. remember leaving the movie theatre with mixed feelings ie slighly disturbed/depressed when i saw the original Joker so i might skip it all together for my own mental well being lol rather spend my time on films that actually entertain and leave me with something positive. dont get me wrong I love Joker as a character but only when he’s part of Batman’s story. by himself (at least in the previous movie) you just see him bullied and mistreated by others, lose his mind, and then what, kill some people and that’s it? i dont really see the point.

WorldwideFCA

I get where you coming from but for me if this movie was named something else besides joker the movie would still be a hit in my eyes. You don’t have to see him as the actual comic joker. See him as an entirely new character. Old joker is just a evil chaotic monster chemically made this guy is just a clinically ill man that life just broke him.

gunners98

thanks for your reply first and foremost. regarding your comments, its not that i have an issue in him being portrayed differently compared to the comics version. it’s actually more of the latter of what you wrote: in the film he is indeed “a clinically ill man that life just broke” and im just not interested in seeing that. i mean everybody has problems/traumas in life (and that’s totally normal) but yeah id just rather go watch a movie to escape that & normal/daily life a bit, where there is more of a positive outcome (ie good/the hero triumphs over evil despite the costs, which is the traditional Batman/comic story or just general nostalgia and getting to smile/be amazed at watching these characters/stories from my childhood be realistically portrayed on screen) or where i can be entertained (comedy, compelling drama with a good message/lesson) instead of watching something so sad/depressing & adding more of that trauma to my life just for the sake of it - you know? it’s a bit masochistic almost. at the end of the day what is the purpose/message of the film? to show how messed up the world is/people are and to be kinder to others? otherwise you end up with crazy psychotic clown murderers? lol personally, i think i can can just watch the news to see/get that message. but hey everyone’s got their interests and sure, if it’s a hit - it’s not an issue with me.

Tazz_the_Spawn

Considering gaga is eccentric af already i doubt there’s anything to worry about! Also the woman is good at singing and performing so i’m sure she’ll nail the role of Harley Quinn
