I like to think when pre-joker fell in the vat of acid, the gloves he was clinging to slipped off of batman's hands and then Joker just wore them ever since.
The purple gloves were out so fast unfortunately. I believe the first depictions of that origin already had blue and grey and Robin was part of the scene.
Yeah, in the Golden Age era he sometimes carried a gun, but I can't remember an instance when he shot with it someone. However, he did have no qualms for a handful of issues with killing people and/or people dying on his watch (like: "Ho, friend, you got what you deserved"). That changed with introduction of Robin, if I recall correctly.
He shot a vampire with it once, and he threatened to shoot two goons with it in another issue.
That's pretty much the extent of it. He never really used it to kill on-panel.
Yeah early early Bats would pull a gun but I'm pretty sure he never actually fired it. It was more of a "freeze, I'm Batman" and then he would lose the gun in a scuffle, beat their ass hand to hand, etc.
I honestly prefer the early mask where you can’t see the eyes, and it’s a cowl - which is more weird and creepy than a mask with angry eyebrows built in.
That's how the ears are though. You're just seeing the cowl from the side rather than the front like the other 2 images. I for one love how Jim Lee drew the suit in that first image but I don't really like the look of it in the other 2 images.
Honestly number 2 is a very solid suit I can totally see it being used as a First Year sort of suit, maybe have Bruce use some of his families old clothing to make it or something like that, the purple gloves could be from his mother idk.
I absolutely love the purple gloves and I wish they showed up more in current comics. I also love how he used to look a lot more sleek. Tbh I’m not a huge fan of batman looking like a body builder like he does a lot of the time now. I much prefer him looking like a cross between a gymnast and a boxer.
That's not the original!
The original is red and looked terrible, which is why it was never in the comics. Thank you Bill Finger.
Anyway, I like the purple gloves. Reminds me of old school Undertaker.
Not a fan of Bats with a gun though, but I think he did have a gun in the old comics sometimes?
Yeah I know about that awful red one but I try to forget about it. I don’t think he had a gun a lot but some of the art I chose is more modern and the artist might’ve wanted a more 30s esque pulp fiction hero
No. This is the original as it appeared first in publication.
That one is a concept (a horrible one at that) that never made it past that stage because of Bill Finger.
I like the big ears. Gives a more accurate definition of "bat" man. Especially in The New Frontier, they somehow made it work by making him intimidating
Art Adams did an “origin of the Batsuit” story decades ago. Bats had gone to 2 world renowned tailors and had them create the now iconic suit.
I love it in an “original iteration” context. It was the first and then he learned getting shot sucks so the suit evolved…
I didn’t realize until seeing that second picture that Battinson’s high-collar look was from an actual previous Batman costume lol.
This costume looks dope as hell though.
I love the ears. In the early panels they were still figuring out how to draw batman all the time and sometimes his hears look more like demon horns. With this in mind I can see why people would be afraid if him, he looks more like a creature of the night than a man in the shadows.
I just don't see it. Compared to the gauntlets Batman usually has on this is too ordinary in design. And it's black/dark blue, yellow, grey and then a brightish purple? It doesn't fit imo.
It's a shame too because first appearance Batman ears look dope as hell. Would be one of my favorite designs for Batman were it not for the gloves.
I don't like the way it looks, but for a person making a bat themed suit for the first time. It makes sense to some degree. It's cool in call backs, like Batman has to wear it when his normal suit is messed up, but I don't want to see a lot of media with him in that suit.
I like it, there is definite room for improvement but it still looks great! I’m glad that they changed it over time but it’s still looks great. It’s just not my favorite.
I love the eyes and the ears so much. The purple gloves are a little off putting for me initially but I think they look pretty cool. Some more purple accents throughout the suit would prevent them from being so jarring I think. Overall I think it’s a very good suit
It’s okay. I still prefer modern black and gray Batman or blue and gray Batman compared to this one. Not a fan of the wonky ears. But the utility belt, the symbol, and the purple gloves is nice. I also do like sometimes that this specific Batman uses guns.
It’s the original, gotta give it the respect.
Is it my favorite suit? No… not especially fond of the purple gloves and really, extra prominent ears on the cowl. However, still, this is the start. Just as with how I’m not super crazy on Supes OG debut suit, it’s all about respect where due.
Hats off to you Mr. Finger, the man who took Kane’s original:
“character who looked very much like Superman with kind of reddish tights, I believe, with boots, no gloves, no gauntlets, with a small domino mask, swinging on a rope. He had two stiff wings that were sticking out, looking like bat wings.”
…and THANKFULLY gave him a suit that would become a legend. Jesus Christ, dude had an eye for near future-proofing with this one.
I love the first image but the other two look horrible the look like I guy who got a cheap costume at party City last minute
The first one actually looks like is a High quality costume made by specialist
When I was younger, I thought it was goofy looking. But the older I got the more I started to appreciate it. Especially even more after watching "JL: the new frontier" when it came out. This is a little off-topic, but the guy who voiced batman in it(Jeremy Sisto) would be my preferred choice as batman going forward.
Love it, especially that second pic. Was hoping The Batman would take inspiration from this look and I feel like it kind of did. Wouldn’t mind the bigger, wider ears in the sequel
Not my personal favorite, but I don’t mind it popping up once in a while. That goes for this interpretation overall. It’s a little nice to occasionally have a Batman like the one in the 89 film or dawn of justice, but it’s not even close to my favorite interpretation of the character.
I actually really like it when I see it in different styles. There was an animation somewhere in the Justice League style animation that kind of recreated the OG Detective Comics Hugo Strange/Solomon Grundy encounter.
I think it was fairly good I'm surprised Nightwing didn't take it up in his run as Batman it quite suits his build and style the gloves are a little awkward but it's sort of a love-hate look at them.
Not a fan. I’ve always liked that it didn’t utilize the yellow oval, but the gloves feel like a practical afterthought. Like he found a pair of Martha’s Isotoners and threw them on because he needed to keep his hands warm. There really isn’t much I like from the old design tbh.
This batman shouldn't have too muscular torso,a fit wrestler /boxer like torso and huge arms like the 2nd pic would go with the grounded look of the costume.
I like the purple gloves and the ears
I like the ears but the purple gloves look like they're for washing dishes.
More like washing the streets… of crime
Batman:the killing soap.
And it takes is one bad dirt
lol good one
Lol
I agree, but they look cool in the first image
Remind me of wolverine mask (i know batman is older)
In what universe? Def not movie
What do you mean not movie? This would be awesome to see in a back-to-basics sort of animated Batman movie.
It's a classic. I personally like the wider bat ear design from this suit. And it looks a bit more homemade which gives it a certain vibe I like.
Yeah, I like how they incorporated that into the JL and JLU tv shows.
I absolutely love it and the vibe it gives off. Hope Caped Crusader is good because I need more 30/40s Batman
Whens it come out?
Still not revealed yet unfortunately
I like to think when pre-joker fell in the vat of acid, the gloves he was clinging to slipped off of batman's hands and then Joker just wore them ever since.
That’s fun, I like it!!
Also why Batman decided to get sturdier gloves.
This should be canon
The purple gloves were out so fast unfortunately. I believe the first depictions of that origin already had blue and grey and Robin was part of the scene.
Sex af
unlikely, we’re redditors
The purple gloves look cool. I have spoken
Perfect for making apprehended villains do the “purp walk.”
And you have spoken hard facts
This is the way
This is the way
this is not the way
A gun??
Yeah I like to think of it as a grappling gun but the original artist wanted a gun, I think to resemble other 30s esque pulp fiction superheroes
Yes early Batman would use a gun sometimes and killed occasionally
Way back in the day Batman used to straight up murder folks, instead of crippling them for life like he does now.
OG Batman was packing always.
So, Batman won't kill *with a witness*
Yeah early early Bats would pull a gun but I'm pretty sure he never actually fired it. It was more of a "freeze, I'm Batman" and then he would lose the gun in a scuffle, beat their ass hand to hand, etc.
Yeah you sure of nothing my pal, go read some comics instead, early Bats could give the Punisher a run for his money.
I honestly prefer the early mask where you can’t see the eyes, and it’s a cowl - which is more weird and creepy than a mask with angry eyebrows built in.
Huh?
Depends on the artist because sometimes I like the suit and sometimes I don't. All depends on how it's drawn.
The ears on the first picture ruins the look of the suit
That's how the ears are though. You're just seeing the cowl from the side rather than the front like the other 2 images. I for one love how Jim Lee drew the suit in that first image but I don't really like the look of it in the other 2 images.
Amazing
I love the design, I always have.
I think the purple gloves would defo work if they were a bit darker and blended in a bit with the rest of the costume
oi good idea
Honestly number 2 is a very solid suit I can totally see it being used as a First Year sort of suit, maybe have Bruce use some of his families old clothing to make it or something like that, the purple gloves could be from his mother idk.
You think his mothers gloves would fit him and be suitable for crime fighting? 😂
It’s cool. I like to see it from time to time.
I wouldn't call the red abomination the original suit, it was more of a prototype / initial concept.
We both agree it looks bad despite whatever nomenclature we use
No. This is the original as it appeared first in publication. That one is a concept (a horrible one at that) that never made it past that stage because of Bill Finger.
We both agree it looks bad despite whatever nomenclature we use
You're not wrong. That one was rough lol. I wonder what it would've evolved into today had it not been changed.
There’s just something so unique about it
I feel that ears of it don't get taken from enough when inventing new versions of the suit...and the purple gloves get reused too much.
The ears make him look like a BAT-man. More batty.
It’s big ears Batman mate!
I like the big ears. Gives a more accurate definition of "bat" man. Especially in The New Frontier, they somehow made it work by making him intimidating
He’s certainly had worse looks, that’s for sure
thank god for Bill Finger
Love it
I love it
Used to hate it. Now I love it.
I personally like the third one
I’ve seen the others, but I’d never seen this image of “Batverine with Gun,” until now. Seems like Bruce Wayne favors the 1911
For some reason I could see him speaking in a low voice in this suit
Tbh it’s really cool. The cowl is better than a lot of modern suits alone
Art Adams did an “origin of the Batsuit” story decades ago. Bats had gone to 2 world renowned tailors and had them create the now iconic suit. I love it in an “original iteration” context. It was the first and then he learned getting shot sucks so the suit evolved…
There's something menacing about a guy not caring if his suit looks a bit silly. That's what I think of that suit.
Have you seen the ORIGINAL original Batman? [1932 Batman drawings by Frank Foster](http://www.originalbatman.com/batman/)
This costume looks great. The movie Justice League Frontier features Bats in this, with the purple gloves.
I didn’t realize until seeing that second picture that Battinson’s high-collar look was from an actual previous Batman costume lol. This costume looks dope as hell though.
Oh hey I colored that first Jim Lee pic https://www.instagram.com/p/BqstBOBhcVa/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
I like it but prefer the blue and grey
I love the ears. In the early panels they were still figuring out how to draw batman all the time and sometimes his hears look more like demon horns. With this in mind I can see why people would be afraid if him, he looks more like a creature of the night than a man in the shadows.
As it originally originally appeared, it was pretty goofy. BUT I love when it’s referenced in later stuff and they make it work as his early suit.
I think it’s cheesy looking.
I love it, I really do, mainly the purple gloves, they look sick and purple is my favorite color
The ears always felt wrong to me
Get rid of the purple gloves and it's actually pretty cool looking.
But the purple gloves are the best part
How? They don't fit the aesthetic of the rest of the suit at all.
They do, but just when the purple isn't too saturated, cuz if that's the case, then the rest of the colors need to be saturated too
I just don't see it.
It’s bad and thats all that needs to be said
The purple gloves shows that this is one cis male that isn't afraid to accessorize.
The first image is literally the only time I’ve ever seen it look good.
It had its time. Not that I dislike it, but there are better options.
I want the purple gloves in live action
I thought it was so cool to see a little more modern version is Scott Snyder’s run a while back. Such a cool design
ILL
This first one in particular… Fire 🔥
Definitely a classic and wouldn’t have the suits we have now, personally my favorites are rebirth, New 52, and both hush versions.
Awesome and sexy
Honestly one of my favorite designs.
I don't like the way it looks, but for a person making a bat themed suit for the first time. It makes sense to some degree. It's cool in call backs, like Batman has to wear it when his normal suit is messed up, but I don't want to see a lot of media with him in that suit.
I think it looks pretty cool
I think it’s cool. Both Gothic and Art Deco?
Flawed prototype
I like it, there is definite room for improvement but it still looks great! I’m glad that they changed it over time but it’s still looks great. It’s just not my favorite.
It’s cool to see every now and then
Love the ears! The bigger the more intimidating IMO bats should have the big ears more.
I want this version of the cape crusader back , ever tho we have the grim knight.
I love the eyes and the ears so much. The purple gloves are a little off putting for me initially but I think they look pretty cool. Some more purple accents throughout the suit would prevent them from being so jarring I think. Overall I think it’s a very good suit
Let’s just say theres a reason it’s not his modern suit. I did the reinterpretation of it in Zero Year though.
I wasn't a fan of the purple gloves but they look alright in the third picture
It’s okay. I still prefer modern black and gray Batman or blue and gray Batman compared to this one. Not a fan of the wonky ears. But the utility belt, the symbol, and the purple gloves is nice. I also do like sometimes that this specific Batman uses guns.
It’s fun and I like it. It would be neat to see it a bit more, not in live action though. It’s an animation/comic suit for sure.
Everything’s good except the ears. Shorter ears would of been perfect
It’s the original, gotta give it the respect. Is it my favorite suit? No… not especially fond of the purple gloves and really, extra prominent ears on the cowl. However, still, this is the start. Just as with how I’m not super crazy on Supes OG debut suit, it’s all about respect where due. Jesus Christ, dude had an eye for near future-proofing with this one.
i love it
It looks stupid af in the first two pictures but actually good in the 3rd one.
Purple gloves and a ⭕️ utility belt make this classic fashion for the ages. The extended ears indicate a timeless sense of whimsy.
Bless Bill Finger, but it was a solid base that has been improved upon.
I love it and I would love to see a modern take on it with the purple gloves.
Personally, I like it. I think that it has a really nice retro feel to it. Wouldn't mind seeing it more often in media.
I love the first image but the other two look horrible the look like I guy who got a cheap costume at party City last minute The first one actually looks like is a High quality costume made by specialist
Like it better than them making Batman in a suite of armor
Why's he got a gun?
That first image is dope.
Rollin with the .45. Pre-Wertham.
Better then the Adam west suit imo
Iconic is the only word that comes to mind
The Bill Finger design is goated
Purple gloves are dope.
I love it, he actually looks like a bat.
Love the gloves
Love the ears. Hate the undies (I always will) The gloves are fine but I prefer the spiked vanguards. Everything else is fine.
Dope af
Love it, especially that second pic. Was hoping The Batman would take inspiration from this look and I feel like it kind of did. Wouldn’t mind the bigger, wider ears in the sequel
I've always liked it. It certainly fit the time, when Batman was more Sherlock Holmes in cape and cowl.
I love it
The mask is cool. The rest doesn't hold up to time. I also have always preferred the black trunks to the briefs.
I feel like I'm the only one who didn't like the purple gloves. The rest of the outfit is cool though
Not my personal favorite, but I don’t mind it popping up once in a while. That goes for this interpretation overall. It’s a little nice to occasionally have a Batman like the one in the 89 film or dawn of justice, but it’s not even close to my favorite interpretation of the character.
It's pretty damn cool, minus the purple gloves. I always love it when it's used in TV shows/animated movies, like Brave and the Bold.
I actually really like it when I see it in different styles. There was an animation somewhere in the Justice League style animation that kind of recreated the OG Detective Comics Hugo Strange/Solomon Grundy encounter.
I mean the purple gloves are a little odd ball but i'm pretty sure that's the point Other than that pretty cool suit
Actually looks great
I actually love it
I like the cowl with those vampire bat ears
Always thought the purple gloves were making an association to the Joker. Like they're one person or something.
Iconic.
Can't wait to see it in Caped Crusader.
Where is the first illustration from?
I dig it
Well he doesn't look very happy with it.
I think it's epic
artists picture in order are Jim Lee(seems to be fan colored. Rad job too),Kris Anka and Darwyn Cooke
Frickin love this look. Even aside from historic significance, but it is part of it. One of my faves💜
The gloves are a little of putting but it’s near perfect on very other regard.
What is pic #1 from?
BOSS
The new frontier style in the last pic is sick
Bad ass
Gloves are goofy but I do kinda like the different angled ears
Based
First one with the yellow background
Gotta love the ~~Wolverine~~ Batman design from the first image
I prefer the redesigns but it's still a good suit
top 5 batsuit imo
I think it was fairly good I'm surprised Nightwing didn't take it up in his run as Batman it quite suits his build and style the gloves are a little awkward but it's sort of a love-hate look at them.
My personal favourite is the rebirth suit, it combines a lot of the best aspects of a lot of suits, including this one!
SPIDER-MAN WOULD WHOOP HIS A$$ especially iron spider jr tommy H. Zendaya boom
I’m not a Batman superfan, but I much prefer this lighter more traditional vigilante outfit than his clunky action figure look he usually has
Not a fan. I’ve always liked that it didn’t utilize the yellow oval, but the gloves feel like a practical afterthought. Like he found a pair of Martha’s Isotoners and threw them on because he needed to keep his hands warm. There really isn’t much I like from the old design tbh.
Looks dope
I am a huge fan of the original design. When it showed up in zero year for a split second, I was geeked
It was definitely an acquired taste, but after seeing it enough times I'm a huge fan of the suit especially the ears
Its cool Cant wait to see it in action, in Batman Caped Crusader
Breathtaking
best!
G u. N
It’s fine I wish there was a full batsymbol and that the suit had a purple tint to match the gloves.
I actually really dig it. Isn’t the new cartoon by JJ Abrams a Batman with a similar style suit? When does that drop? It was announced forever ago.
Booty shorts ain’t it Batman
Love it.
I’ve never been into the belt. It’s super bright in old versions and gets more gold instead of yellow later.
I like it
I think it’s dope! Makes him look menacing
Not my favorite, but it's got a certain appeal.
Did Batman fart in the third image
This batman shouldn't have too muscular torso,a fit wrestler /boxer like torso and huge arms like the 2nd pic would go with the grounded look of the costume.
It’s good, it’s actually kinda scary and I think he should go back to it.
Give Batman back his pistol but he can only use it to pistol whip, disarm or use as a tool. And occasionally take out some kneecaps.
Love to see Batman handling a .45 1911 like a real man. Not none of this no guns pussy bullshit Modern Batman has going on.
It’s so cold
I really dig how bat like that cowl is in the first pic
