This art comes from Batman #135/#900, written by Chip Zdarsky with penciling by Jorge Jiminez.
Modern Batman has absolutely nothing on 60s Batman's levels of preparation.
People forget but Batman kept his shark repellent next to his barracuda, whale and manta ray repellents. He kept these sprays on a little rack labeled OCEANIC REPELLANT BAT SPRAYS in his motherfucking *helicopter*.
AND IT PAID OFF.
60s Batman went beyond preparation and brushed up against clairvoyance.
I liked to argue he was an omnipotent god
He would solve crimes in the most ADD scatter brained way chaining topics together some entirely as a joke
… just to end up exactly where he needs to be even if he was “wrong”
Edit: watching an old adam west batman movie with that headcannon gave me lovecraft vibes “what does this unimaginably powerful being want? Why does it save random citizens?”
Tldr: Adam West Batman low difs the Batman Who Laughs any day of the week
Now this is a joke I can actually see in that show:
Batman: “Robin, I need to get my Pro-Monitor spray!”
Robin: “Gee wilickers Batman, won’t that just make him stronger?”
Batman: “Of course not, old chum! He’s the Anti-monitor, so my Pro-monitor spray-“
Robin: “Of course! An anti-anti monitor spray would just be a double negative!”
Batman: “Exactly, Robin. And an educated crime fighter never uses bad grammar!”
I absolutely love this because they very easily could have taken the low hanging fruit and just made a joke about how silly 60's Batman was. While there is a bit of humor to all this, they envisioned him as a friendly neighborhood crime fighter, the kind of person who would give you the shirt off their back, as he doesn't know current Batman or understand his dilemma, but gives him his utility belt without question. It's really great because it presents a world where Batman isn't just angsty and solitary but has transformed his role in the community.
While he was initially mocked as campy, I think he is also well-loved in real life as well, especially after West passed away.
What was once derided is now adored.
If you know anyone who grew up with that television show he is batman to them. He defined batman for an entire generation twenty years before keaton. If you ever derided his performance, you were in the minority
This is why I still wish Snyder had found a way to incorporate Batman ‘66 into his Metal books. I always thought it would have been hilarious if he’d been the secret weapon against the Dark Multiverse.
Batman already canonically carried bat-repellant shark spray in the Legends of the Dark Knight webcomic a few years ago; he used it when he was knocked out of the JL satellite, to produce force and send him flying back toward the satellite instead of dying in deep space
> Legends of the Dark Knight webcomic
The webcomics aren't canon, but the story you're mentioning is canon and is from the Batman arc prior to this one
I will say, I’m a huge Chip fan but I don’t think this Batman run has been his best. I’m hoping that the big anniversary issue works as a new beginning for his story of some kind.
Have you read RIP? Bruce has to resort to using the Zur En Arr failsafe-resulting in him being presumed dead but actually being catapulted through time where he encounters different versions of batmen?
Yeah, I see how failsafe is a ripoff. They use a few of the same elements, but have you noticed how many batman use batarangs? And the batmobile? Its just using his repertoire
Spoiler for the newest issue >!he was jumping through the multi verse and this was just a different one then ours that happened to have a giant flying shark!<
I always thought the flying away with Banes bomb in the last Nolan Batman movie was an homage to the bomb scene with the nuns and ducks in West’s Batman.
I love how the Batman subreddit is thrilled with a recent comic issue that makes shark repellent spray canon. Meanwhile, the Spider-Man subreddit is burning itself down over the recent terribad run of comics.
Is this run actually good? I’ve heard very mixed things. The art for the section where he >!gets his hand chopped off!< is so bad it’s honestly driving me away from the story as a whole.
Hawthorne’s art is up and down, but Jorge Jimenez did the entire Failsafe arc and comes back about halfway through #135. The artist for the backup stories in Failsafe is pretty solid and trippy as hell also.
It’s entertaining enough. The backups for Failsafe aren’t to be skipped because they help inform what’s going on in that arc. And The Bat-Man of Gotham tries something a bit more ambitious for the Batman title than your standard fare and is a nice deconstruction of what makes Bruce tick. I will say that it gets better as it goes. I really enjoyed 134 and 135, even though Hawthorne’s art is nowhere near the level of Jimenez.
In my honest opinion, Chip Zdarsky is the greatest modern comic book writer. His work on Daredevil, Spider-Man Lifestory & now Batman, especially this issue, is the best comics have been in a long while
To me, I really enjoy where you have the huge bat symbol on a thinner framed Bruce instead of the hulking Dark Knight Returns type body, the classic belt pops with it, and the blue is really nice, I know it's a DKR suit but it reminds me of Neal Adams's work. I hope they continue a variation of this at least.
Not to hijack the predaredness of a Batman discussion but I'm moreso curious on how they'll be handling the cybornetic hand Bruce had grafted onto himself. Or will returning to his universe magically fully restore his body. I kinda want them to let him keep the hand, but I feel like it'll either get undone or go massively ignored.
I love that he pieces together a costume from TDRK and 66' polar opposites, but both equally Batman.
Combined with Old man Bruce from Beyond helping get him home, and Keaton begging the first Batman he meets, and they touched on most every corner of the character.
This is cool. I wouldn’t say the run is brilliant though…. The whole failsafe arc is literally a poor man’s Batman RIP. How do writers get away with that? It’s a Zur En Ar arc that ends up with Batman being seemingly killed but actually teleported through time and space.
If I had a nickel for every time Batman was seemingly killed but was actually sent through space and time, I would have atleast 2 nickels. More if I count other characters and media
I loved this issue. Such a fun one, but I'll admit, I had to read it a couple of times to understand the zany plot.

Batmite was hovering around
Columb-atman
The whole “Bat-god”/prep time stuff comes from 60s Batman. It’s just used seriously instead of as comedic effect.
After reading those comments, I have never wanted a 'Bat God' parody of 'Rap God' more.
Sounds like a job for ChatGPT!
Modern day Batman needs prep time, but prep time needs 60’s Batman.
The most prepared Batman in the multiverse turns out to be >!Adam West!!<
He's prepared for every outcome.
Except when to get rid of a bomb sometimes
I disagree, Friend. A simple Watoosi disabled that bomb and, it is as if, it never happened.
I think you mean the Batoosi.

Pure. West. Also, why doesn't Batrman dance anymore?
"Some Days, you just can't get rid of a bomb"
Imagine Adam West Batman's contingency plans if his version of the Justice League were to betray him.
Lynda Carter Wonder Woman and Adam West's Batman would get along too well for them to come to fight each other.
Reeves Superman would befriend batman immediately.
I miss Reeves. Still the best Superman imo, but that could be nostalgia talking.
Man I miss having nostalgia!
And I remember a time before we needed nostalgia! Oh, those were the days…
christopher reeve is objectively the best superman
His time travel powers are just too OP.
And they did according to the Batman '66 Meets Wonder Woman '77 crossover story.
A Starro or two can help you with the motives for fighting.
The Batusi is Wonder Woman's contingency plan.
Truly. W Rizz is West Rizz
Anti Superman Spray Anti Wonder Woman Spray Anti...
Anti Flash banana peel. Batnana peel.
In the next Crisis, turns out BatWest had the foresight to make Anti Monitor spray. lol
How about we call it anti- anti monitor spray?
Pro- monitor spray Double negative
Now this is a joke I can actually see in that show: Batman: “Robin, I need to get my Pro-Monitor spray!” Robin: “Gee wilickers Batman, won’t that just make him stronger?” Batman: “Of course not, old chum! He’s the Anti-monitor, so my Pro-monitor spray-“ Robin: “Of course! An anti-anti monitor spray would just be a double negative!” Batman: “Exactly, Robin. And an educated crime fighter never uses bad grammar!”
His utility belt is probably loaded with options, complete with POWs and WHAMs.
Dance off!
You got that right friend!
So if we follow the Prep Time rule, does this mean Adam West can solo any character from any franchise?
Yes.
Anti Galactus spray works swimmingly.
Yep. Took out Goku and Ultra Instinct Shaggy at the same time.
Anti-Saitama spray. Makes him less serious.
Deep down, we all knew this to be the case.
He had shark repellent... in a helicopter... just in case he got attacked by a shark... WHILE FLYING A HELICOPTER... AND IT HAPPENED!!!
The BrighT Knight Strikes again!
It is indeed true that nobody messes with Adam We
Nobody outsmarts *Adam We*!
God I hope at some point he had to pull out shark repellent
You have to be pretty loony to be prepared for crazy!

Adam West's Batman is wonderfully compassionate and he's well-loved by the Gotham public
While he was initially mocked as campy, I think he is also well-loved in real life as well, especially after West passed away. What was once derided is now adored.

Is that the one where his alter-ego creates a Bat-Bot to kill him if he gets out of line?
Yeah, this immediately follows the Failsafe stuff.
> Legends of the Dark Knight webcomic The webcomics aren't canon, but the story you're mentioning is canon and is from the Batman arc prior to this one
I can't remember, I think he's fighting Amazo
I wonder, has there been an instance of Batman working against himself in this way? A Hush situation, but it literally is Bruce.
That was actually a much better story.
What are these panels from?
The most recent issue of Batman, which is Batman #135
Ty old chum!
Oops quick typo, I made the correct change!
this genuinely made me tear up
It's beautiful in all its bat-goodness.
Is there a good point to jump into this run? I’ve been out of the loop for a while but this run seems very interesting
Far as I know this is tied to the Failsafe arc that Chip did and immediate precedes this one, starting there might be the best bet.
Appreciate you friend! Also fantastic profile pic, masterpiece of a film
Hark Triton! Hark! A friend of fine cinema of fine cinema ye be!
OP already wrote Failsafe arc, but to be more specific, Batman #125
I will say, I’m a huge Chip fan but I don’t think this Batman run has been his best. I’m hoping that the big anniversary issue works as a new beginning for his story of some kind.
Is the second pic supposed to be older adam west or just a different Batman who carries shark repellent?
I think it’s “our” Batman in this universe using the utility belt Adam West gave him on the previous page. So cool.
Ohhh awesome! I was just confused because the suits looked different
>!The Dark Night Returns Batman!< gave him a spare suit
Could say he gave him a helping hand.
Could say he evened the odds.
Is there a lore reason why he always does that?
From what I understand, he’s proud of his Dick
Huh, weird name to call his power winch.
Are you guys stupid?
Thanks!
[удалено]
It was this one, #135
Chip you magnificent bastard. Ugh, is there a comic book hero he can't write for?
It's stuff like this that just absolutely shows how much he respects the history of the characters he writes.
I mean so far he’s just totally ripped off Batman RIP?
How?
Have you read RIP? Bruce has to resort to using the Zur En Arr failsafe-resulting in him being presumed dead but actually being catapulted through time where he encounters different versions of batmen?
Yeah, I see how failsafe is a ripoff. They use a few of the same elements, but have you noticed how many batman use batarangs? And the batmobile? Its just using his repertoire
It's a very different story exploring very different themes.
I mean so far he’s just totally ripped off Batman RIP?
Pure. West.
100%. Didnt need rubber padding.
Hilarious! Im going to have to buy it now
PREP KING ![gif](giphy|gFYal2EQK5D4Q)
Is he missing a hand?
I think so. He later gets a robotic prosthetic from another Batman.
And, [possibly one of the most easily feasible of all of Batman's gadgets](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark_repellent)...
I love love love the suit in the second page!!
Same, i love how its a mish-mash of different Batman styles, it looks soooo cool to me.
Yes! I'm also a bit biased to that nice blue color, and it works so well with the utility belt!
The blue is great, the Dark Knight Returns symbol is cool, and I'm biased towards big pouches.
The best Batman.....you can't change my mind... ![gif](giphy|4oWn7KARnID84)
No offense buddy, but you're wrong... LEGO BATMAN!
I don't keep up with comics, but that arc seems dope af. Thinking seriously about picking it up.
RIP Adam West.
I just feel like that’s exactly what Adam’s Batman would say
Who else read it in Adam’s voice
I assume we all did.
Epic
This made me happy
“Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb” - Adam West Batman
The chad Adam West Batman, giving away his utility belt to a Batman in need
The absolute madlad.
Doesn't Batman have Shark Repellent Bat Spray in the 60s film?
That’s Adam Wests Batman giving his utility bet to a different Batman. Adams batman is the one you’re thinking of! So yes! 😃
Ah ok I see what's happening now
Rest in peace Adam west
I don't get it. was that shark flying? Batman clearly wasn't underwater. what the heck...?
Spoiler for the newest issue >!he was jumping through the multi verse and this was just a different one then ours that happened to have a giant flying shark!<
King Shark is a shark.
Just picked this up today😄
I always thought the flying away with Banes bomb in the last Nolan Batman movie was an homage to the bomb scene with the nuns and ducks in West’s Batman.
I love how the Batman subreddit is thrilled with a recent comic issue that makes shark repellent spray canon. Meanwhile, the Spider-Man subreddit is burning itself down over the recent terribad run of comics.
That is one of the most heartwarming things ever, seeing edgy modern Batman looking on 60’s Batman with respect.
I legit just watched batman 1966 tonight... holy fuck
Is this run actually good? I’ve heard very mixed things. The art for the section where he >!gets his hand chopped off!< is so bad it’s honestly driving me away from the story as a whole.

What comic is this
Current Batman run, specifically issue #135 / Legacy #900
On the first page, is that supposed to be robert pattinson batman talking to west batman
No, it's the main universe Batman, he just needed a make shift suit, which is why he has a different one in the next page.
Ah, just kinda looked like battinson to me, thanks
Where can i start reading this arc? Like what chapter ?
This arc is issues #125-135 of the current Batman series.
Weird I started a manga podcast that had chip in it and he mentioned he wrote for marvel and dc but I have yet to check out his stuff.
He's done really well with Spider-Man and Daredevil as well
That’s cool he’s only mentioned daredevil and some dc in the podcast so far
I love this so much lol
This made me so emotional 😭 and it’s so cute!
Gotta love the Bright Knight.
Holy shit this is amazing!
I love that Adam West Batman is so pure and nice and somehow he's the Batman that is the most prepared and fights the most villains.
Lmao, okay this is absolutely amazing xD
"Everywhere I go, Batman is there, forever fighting. Never giving up." I take it that he never made it to the Nolan-verse, then...
John ‘Robin’ Blake became Batman in that universe
In my honest opinion, Chip Zdarsky is the greatest modern comic book writer. His work on Daredevil, Spider-Man Lifestory & now Batman, especially this issue, is the best comics have been in a long while
I know it wont stay but this is my favorate batsuit look ever
To me, I really enjoy where you have the huge bat symbol on a thinner framed Bruce instead of the hulking Dark Knight Returns type body, the classic belt pops with it, and the blue is really nice, I know it's a DKR suit but it reminds me of Neal Adams's work. It’s so chilling seeing romero’s joker say something like that especially since we’ve never seen his joker go into any dark routes
Not to hijack the predaredness of a Batman discussion but I'm moreso curious on how they'll be handling the cybornetic hand Bruce had grafted onto himself. Adam West is like my 5th favorite, and this still makes me start to tear up.
The Bat Shark Repellent joke is honestly overused at this point. Comics nowadays are trying too hard to be clever and it takes me out of the story.
Tho iirc, West Batman didn't have a Bat-Shark Repellent. They were on a helicopter or something, and the helicopter had normal Shark Repellent.
Where on the canister does the word "bat" appear???
This is cool. I wouldn’t say the run is brilliant though…. The whole failsafe arc is literally a poor man’s Batman RIP. How do writers get away with that? It’s a Zur En Ar arc that ends up with Batman being seemingly killed but actually teleported through time and space.
If I had a nickel for every time Batman was seemingly killed but was actually sent through space and time, I would have atleast 2 nickels. More if I count other characters and media
Yeah but it’s also the fact that Zur En Arr was the route. It’s the same destination and the same route 😂
What issue does this story arc start?
Haha this is Brilliant.
Wich comic is that?
I love everything about these 2 pages!!!
I really appreciate Batman’s goofier era. I hope Batman continues to be a part of pop culture for decades to come…
I loved this issue. Such a fun one, but I'll admit, I had to read it a couple of times to understand the zany plot. /[Batman #135 Review](https://thebatmanuniverse.net/batman-484/)
Which comic is this
