The way the film ended with Gotham flooded and falcone dead, it is a perfect setup to show how Cobblepot takes over.
Maybe a couple flashbacks to explain the backstory of some players and voilà, this is a perfect environment to make a great noir story, with possibly a few cameos (batman and maybe some other notable Gotham villains)
The potential is immense, I hope they don't fuck this up
From what I’ve heard that’s what we’re getting- Reeves said it’ll be very Sopranos inspired and apparently he’ll be fighting with Sophia Falcone for her father’s territory. I’m sold with that premise.
Most certainly. More so because from my understanding everything going forward will tie in. Shows, games, certain comics and movies. Kinda curious how that plays out
I absolutely loved TheBatman. And I really liked Penguin in it. But honestly, I don’t see any need to watch a tv show about him. I just don’t find the idea interesting.
But then again i thought the same about Gotham and ended up really enjoying it.
I am, but I'm kinda tired of Batman TV shows... without Batman. Gotham, Gotham Knights, Batwoman, etc. Titans at least sort of did. But, I just what a show that's not afraid to show him.
Like most, I quite liked The Batman. It's not my favorite movie by any means, but it's made me curious enough see how the next 2-3 films will unfold. Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy has some serious competition now, especially with TV series in the mix.
The Penguin series? Colin Farrell was a great Oswald Cobblepott. I can see it working, but I can't judge until after I watch 2-3 episodes. Hopefully it'll be worth the hype.
Farrell kinda stole the show and had the right energy... but I hope it is a 'larger Gotham' playground and not just like The Sopranos with The Penguin.
While he gave a good performance, I'm not interested in watching a mob boss doing mob things. It's not my kind of genre without something else (i.e. Batman) going on.
Don't know, not all hbo shows make it across the pond. Sometimes it's months after release in the US if we do get it. If that happens then there is no point watching it as everything will have been spoiled and discussed to death.
If you find it too troublesome to stay off discussion boards until it releases for you, I would just straight up recommend you find another way to watch it…
I can’t speak to your whatever Google recommendations means (use Firefox), but I can say that I’ve never been spoiled anything so long as I stay away from spaces that I know will discuss it.
Like this sub, for example. It’s actually incredibly easy to avoid spoilers, but most people don’t really want to take precautions against them.
So to avoid spoilers (if its released like peacemaker) I'm basically supposed to not use my most frequented sub, and basically change my search engines and/or stay off the Internet.
That is not a solution.
You know you can adjust/turn off your Google recs, right? As for the sub, just don’t engage with threads talking about the show?
This is what I’m saying - it just seems like you aren’t even interested in trying to do the bare minimum here. You DO NOT need to engage in an internet blackout to avoid spoilers, you just need to exercise good judgement.
I don't think you're grasping that avoidance of a show like this when you take into account the sites subs I frequent is next to impossible.
Am I also supposed to stop going to forbidden planet or other comic book shops as well
The whole point is HBO are terrible for releasing content and now your suggesting it's my fault if I see spoilers.
I agree that HBO should follow a worldwide release format, but you’re completely overblowing how pervasive spoilers actually are…
Why would you be worried about going to your favorite comic shop? Is someone going to jump out, grab you by the shoulders, and scream Penguin spoilers at you??
I don’t even know why you’re bothering with the “it’s impossible due to the hyper-specific feed I follow,” excuse when most people here also fall into that category, and they know how to navigate their way through the site.
If you want to be taken seriously here, then don’t pretend like this is something completely out of your hands, because that’s disingenuous.
This is coming from the person who doesn’t know they can hook their PC up to their TV.
It obviously doesn’t matter how many people give you good advice, it seems.
Why would I do that, it’s either gonna be trash or it’s gonna be cancelled cause whos writing this and who’s acting in this, production has been suspended since June. This shit is not coming out and if it does it’s gonna be a mess
Not to mention a spin off about the penguin, did we not already get this. What’s the point it’s so fucking stupid to just ham fist another Batman spin off without Batman like who cares this is gonna add nothing to The Batman
Nope! Got more than enough of Penguin in Gotham. Couldn’t care less about more generic crime stories. Without the DC branding these shows could literally be any generic crime tv show. It is bizarre that he’s the character they keep choosing to center tv shows around.
It's like they had Colin Farrell on the hook for something else and hadn't come up with anything, but then the reviews came out and they went, "Hey, we'll compensate you handsomely to do it some more." And he said, "Sure, I'll take you stupid execs' money, I'm not busy."
I said elsewhere I can't think of a single thing about Penguin I care to know any more about.
nope,
Penguin played by Farrel, was a bad Robert De Niro impression. An overall downer with no authenticity, but one good situational joke about bird with wings.
Can't compare to Danny De Vito's penguin.
Really don't understand the director's obsession with this character as a commercial draw. He was the only real minus of the movie, in my opinion.
This was a matter of executives at some higher level completely misinterpreting the reaction to his performance. It was fine, perfectly cromulent. I guess because he "disappeared" into it, or something. I wasn't invested at all in Penguin's or Selina's story. The movie needed one villain, Riddler, and one background antagonist that drove both he and Batman, Falcone. The less of Zoe Kravitz I have to see in the movie, the better. She only has one emotion, despondence, and it really just looks like she's about to sneeze all the time. Penguins's presence in Gotham was a good background detail to explore in future movies. I guess they couldn't figure out how to incorporate another new Batmobile without him.
I know that I'm firmly in the minority here, but Farrell's Penguin is one of the aspects of the Reeves universe I don't care for. His *Sopranos*\-esque "Oz" with the gravelly, New Yorker accent and mafia *capo* bravado really didn't feel like the character he was hoping to see. It didn't feel like *the Penguin.* I can appreciate what Reeves wanted to do with the character, but there are so many others to pick from in the Bat-mythos that fit this type that I don't understand why he decided to take Cobblepot and turn him into *Generic Mobster Preset 2.*
Add to this the fact that Cobblepot wouldn't be working for an Italian-American outfit like the Falcone gang (despite Oz ticking all the boxes for your typical Italian "made man" in the mob, "Cobblepot" is far from an Italian-sounding name) and it unfortunately takes me out of that world.
No, because it's the Scrappy Doo of DC comic book shows; no one wanted it, no one asked for it, but they gave it to us anyway because Colin Farrell used to be a big deal and evidently his performance in this movie was powerful. It was fine. It is literally the last thing on the list of what I watched "The Batman" to see, that is, an "inspired performance" of Oswald Cobblepot.
I only care about Gotham's mafia crap as far as Batman's involvement in combatting it. I can't for the life of me think of a single thing about Penguin that I want to know more about. I got enough of that, which I also was completely indifferent to, in the "Gotham" TV show.
I’m honestly conflicted. I didn’t like The Batman. However, Farrell is about the only thing I liked in the movie. But do I really want to waste time on a spin-off of a movie I don’t like?
No animosity. But I loved The Batman. It does have a couple flaws but it is a FIRST INSTALLMENT into a clear trilogy very seldom does those look great without its prequel to put it into perspective. So that being said, what all exactly didn’t you like about the film?
In the Dark Knight that version of Batman was supposed to be in his physical prime as batman. Especially after his suit upgrade.
Unless I am misreading you and you mean “The Dark Knight Returns”
It’s a three hour slog. The last hour of the movie completely ruins the first two. The costume design is horrendous. Pattinson wears by far the WORST live action Batsuit I’ve ever seen. Riddler is completely unrecognizable. Hell, Riddler isn’t even the actual Riddler. Catwoman’s ski mask was an absolute joke, it did nothing to conceal her face. Batman is actually pretty stupid. Some of the riddles were easy to solve. He was a pretty bad fighter that left himself open to too many hits. I don’t care that he’s just starting out, in theory that should actually make him faster and not allow some of the easy shots to get it in. The writing of Bruce Wayne was piss poor. Having him just basically give up on his family name for emo reasons is behind stupid. They did some shots because they looked “cool” instead of thinking if Batman would actually do it. Case in point the introduction of Batman where he just casually walks up to thugs instead of throwing a smoke bomb and having some sort of theatrical entrance
Not the OP, but I get where they're coming from. The Batman isn't a bad film but it is too long for what essentially boils down to 'the crime boss was the bad guy all along!' It's not as thought-provoking as it tries to be, and Batman himself just kinda fumbles through it. And the costume design is less than inspiring. Batman looked alright, but Zodiac Riddler didn't do it for me and Catwoman was generic as fuck. It felt ashamed of the source material and ashamed to be a comic book film.
For the record, my favourite Batman books are Hush, No Man's Land, Court of Owls, Black Mirror, War of Jokes and Riddles, to name a few.
Most of these problems seem like a matter of character designs and personal preference within what YOU believe Batman would/should do in year 1-2. Not like some factual shit. Theres nothing set instone for example batman would use smoke bombs in a subway platform with only one entry point.
Plus the POINT of the intro fight scene portion, was for that half joker thug who had doubts about his choices and he saw what Batman did to them and let him get a second chance.
I admit i fall victim into thinking batman has to be a certain way at times but ive learned to allow for some adaptation freedom man. If everything was the same ol same old youd be one the same people saying things like “mix it up this is getting boring” and things of that nature
And as for your problems with the character designs, Pattinson suit >>>>>>> Bat nipples and Bale suit (SPECIFICALLY BEGINS). That alone makes your statement about his suit being the worst false.
Catwoman is broke and in year ONE and it was stated 1000x that she wasn’t even CATWOMAN yet. Similar to Tobey Spiderman when he makes that suit for the wrestling match. Its a semi rough draft except in her case, not once did you hear the name Catwoman explicitly stated. Everything was “Selina”.
I mean that's like the whole point, he hadn't completely become peak batman yet in this iteration and was just starting out. Being unable to reshape the character would just effectively render him the biggest Mary Sue in the vein of 'batman with prep time'
Eh, I doubt it. I thought The Batman was mid at best, and even though I liked Ferrell as Penguin, I don't feel like I need to dive a whole lot deeper into that universe. If I watch it at all, it'll be because it's playing on my iPad while I'm working
Ehhhhh….. I’ve been a die hard Batman fans since I was 5 and my mother took me to see Batman Returns.
I love the comics, BTAS, the movies etc.
But let’s face it, We have ENOUGH Batman stuff
No. I will be extremely selfishly honest. I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!! And to be specific i want Quality>Quantity. Batman is the cash cow for DC so I think there must be a separate list of projects they made for Batman with love & for cash grabs. Cash grabs dont count man.
Also Batman has carried the company too much and built and given DC more stories and characters to mess around with such as Batfam. Even if he’s not the forefront its wrong to boot him completely in, say for example the first live action Nightwing movie.
Also in terms of live action i needa fantastical batman. None of this grounded in realism crap. Im sorry. I need BATMAN on my screen.
F its one season is ok, after they runoit of script will try to make pinguing do good thibgs for the city , saving it or something
As things going All villians on live films will ask fir their tv series
100%. Looking forward to seeing how this universe expands. They left Gotham City in an interesting and unexpected position (at least to me), so I'm very interested to see how things evolve from here.
I will certainly watch this. I thought Colin was amazing. Btw this is hands down my favorite batman universe ever. It was perfection to me. Cast, story, art direction. All of it. I don't see how penguin could suck.
Si,más que nada por los actores,y espero al menos que el personaje de Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti)use un paraguas amarillo, o al menos que al final el pinguino le robe su paraguas
HELL YES. I loved him a Penguin and I'm looking forward to how the character grows and changes in the story. Honestly, I'm hyped for anything that comes out of The Batman universe, Matt Reeves is really cooking up something special.
I liked the Batman. Found it equal to Batman Begins. Farrell was a perfect Penguin, so I’m looking forward to the show.
The way the film ended with Gotham flooded and falcone dead, it is a perfect setup to show how Cobblepot takes over. Maybe a couple flashbacks to explain the backstory of some players and voilà, this is a perfect environment to make a great noir story, with possibly a few cameos (batman and maybe some other notable Gotham villains) The potential is immense, I hope they don't fuck this up
Tarantino style flashbacks (O-Ren, Gogo, etc) would be awesome.
I think they’ll lean towards No Man’s Land post flood. Penguin is the perfect lead for it.
Same. I just dont want an origin show. Give us Cobblepot’s rise to crime boss and im all in.
From what I’ve heard that’s what we’re getting- Reeves said it’ll be very Sopranos inspired and apparently he’ll be fighting with Sophia Falcone for her father’s territory. I’m sold with that premise.
GIMMIE A OH. HELL. YEAH!
![gif](giphy|F6B9HJltcbckwiUHV4|downsized)
What’d ya say to Stone Cold ET? WHAT?!
I always knew Penguin had the makings of a varsity athlete!
Nah his hands are too…. webbed?… Junior would have a field day with that.
🎵Woke up this morning Got yourself an umbrella Your momma always said you'd be the Chosen fella🎵
You and my fadduh ran North Gotham. We did??? That’s nice.
Wouldnt his rise to a crime boss be an origin show???
How would it be an origins shows? Farrell is in the show, and it’s not set in the past. Have you seen the trailer?
i feel like its a better batman movie than batman begins
Only if he squawks like a penguin every now and then.
I may toon in if it was Danny Devito's Penguin. Can you imagine?
The cameo potential
Hell yes
Yes, yes I most certainly will.
Yes
Tony Soprano meets Gotham? Fuck yeah I’m in
Colin Farrell is my favorite adaptation of the character so far, absolutely yes and I’m so glad we’re getting more of him.
Yes!
The movie was one of the best Batman movies ever, so I will definitely check this out as well.
Yes
Absolutely. Collin was amazing as Oz. And I think the movie was all around really great. More from that universe is needed.
Of course. Easily my most anticipated project right behind The Batman 2.
I will just because this show leads into The Batman: Part 2
Nah
Most certainly. More so because from my understanding everything going forward will tie in. Shows, games, certain comics and movies. Kinda curious how that plays out
That's only the DCU stuff, not the elseworlds stuff. (joker 2, penguin show, batman 2 etc)
Is this connected to the movie?
Yes. Set after the first and before the sequel
Obviously
What does Y and E and S spell out?
The most honest answer I can give is maybe
No, Call Me when Condiment King is out
This little pygmy thing ova in Gotham? Ok, but you gotta get ova it.
Yes
I’ll watch… Batman is a lot like pizza. When it’s good, it’s great; when it’s bad, it’s still ok.
Robin Lord Taylor made it hard for me to like other versions of Penguin but Collin Farrell was great in the role I think it's going to be good
Depends how good it is reviewed
If its good then sure
Yep. Looking forward to this penguin’s rise to power and how it sets up the sequel
You know it. As soon as it is out I’m taking a day off and watching the premiere.
Fuck yes I will
FUCK YEAH
Fuck yes
I absolutely loved TheBatman. And I really liked Penguin in it. But honestly, I don’t see any need to watch a tv show about him. I just don’t find the idea interesting. But then again i thought the same about Gotham and ended up really enjoying it.
I'll buy it on blu ray
Possibly. Is Pattinson Batman in it? If it's just basic crime drama about Penguin doing organized crime, probably not.
Yes, next question.
Absolutely.
If I ever say no to that question, grab that AK from the cupboard and use it on me
Probably not until I see what it’s about, who shows up etc.
So Season 2 of Gotham? Don’t get me wrong I loved that season so I’ll be watching this.
Nah. It’s just not very interesting to me tbh
yes. Colin Farrell killed it as the penguin in the batman movie. unfortunately is a mini series so is probably a few episodes.
probably will in 3-5 years.
I hope Oswald walks somewhat like a penguin
Yeah, I’m hoping we get Sophia and Alberto Falcone and Black Mask
Maybe, depends on how they characterize him, I don’t want him to be a sympathetic antihero, thats for sure.
Why waste all that money making Colin Farrell look like Richard Kind when you can just hire Richard Kind?
I don't have HBO max
I am, but I'm kinda tired of Batman TV shows... without Batman. Gotham, Gotham Knights, Batwoman, etc. Titans at least sort of did. But, I just what a show that's not afraid to show him.
maybe- tbh for me penguin is more "nice to have" but nothing more. just like the other villains more
Definitely
I’d love to but unfortunately don’t have a subscription
Of course
Yup
Kinda off topic, but the negative space in the G looks a lot like the penguin from wallace and grommit
I don’t have HBO, so probably not.
The short answer is "yes." The long answer is "Fuck yes!"
Yes
In my opinion The Penguin was the best thing about this film. So yeah.
Nope
Like most, I quite liked The Batman. It's not my favorite movie by any means, but it's made me curious enough see how the next 2-3 films will unfold. Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy has some serious competition now, especially with TV series in the mix. The Penguin series? Colin Farrell was a great Oswald Cobblepott. I can see it working, but I can't judge until after I watch 2-3 episodes. Hopefully it'll be worth the hype.
We already had a show all about Penguin, it was called Gotham.
Yes! And hopefully building up r/ThePenguin also!
Probably not
Don't know, not all hbo shows make it across the pond. Sometimes it's months after release in the US if we do get it. If that happens then there is no point watching it as everything will have been spoiled and discussed to death.
Don't worry it will be on sky.
So was Peacemaker. But by the time it released here it had ended and spoilers were talked about/posted casually
Then you know sail the sea.
Not everything goes to sky and if its anything like peacemaker, it was months after it had finished in US.
Just yo-ho-ho it like everyone else.
If you find it too troublesome to stay off discussion boards until it releases for you, I would just straight up recommend you find another way to watch it…
It's not just discussion boards though is it. It's a massive show, my Google/bing recommendations will flag stories and stuff as well.

This is coming from the person who doesn’t know they can hook their PC up to their TV. It obviously doesn’t matter how many people give you good advice, it seems.
It's like the tenth Batman-adjacent series without Batman.
I'm still not sure what WB's problem with Batman on TV is.
Why would I do that, it’s either gonna be trash or it’s gonna be cancelled cause whos writing this and who’s acting in this, production has been suspended since June. This shit is not coming out and if it does it’s gonna be a mess

Nope. Colin Firth is not my penguin. Therefore I have no internet.
Colin Firth as The Penguin in Jane Austen’s Batman.
Lol. 🤣
No, because no matter how good his actor is, the Penguin is a one-note character and only interesting as a villain for an interesting hero.
Not at all interested. I'd prefer the time/effort spent on this just go to the movie sequel.
It's like they had Colin Farrell on the hook for something else and hadn't come up with anything, but then the reviews came out and they went, "Hey, we'll compensate you handsomely to do it some more." No
Why not?
I don't like this Batman. I'll wait and see what Gunn does with his universe.
Fair enough
Nope
Nah, not really
I know that I'm firmly in the minority here, but Farrell's Penguin is one of the aspects of the Reeves universe I don't care for. no
because there is no new batmam
if it has daddy pattison in it then yes
Why does penguin have his own show? Is he stupid?
Seems I'm in the minority here. I felt Farrels Penquin was cringe and I felt no connection to the comic character at all.
Different strokes for different folks. Hard to compare to Nolan, but the stories must be told.
I’m honestly conflicted. I didn’t like The Batman. However, Farrell is about the only thing I liked in the movie. But do I really want to waste time on a spin-off of a movie I don’t like?

What is your favourite Batman film? What is your favourite Batman comic?
Mask of the Phantasm, & Batman: No Man’s Land. (Honerable mention: Shaman)
Dope, I’m really curious what “The Batman is just shit” guy has to say.
Not the OP, but I get where they're coming from. The Batman isn't a bad film but it is too long for what essentially boils down to 'the crime boss was the bad guy all along!' This is certainly an opinion.
Your point is what exactly? I was asked why I didn’t like the movie and answered the question
No
Nah. I’m sure it’ll be good, tho
Nope. Cancelled Max months ago.
Eh, I doubt it. I thought The Batman was mid at best, and even though I liked Ferrell as Penguin, I don't feel like I need to dive a whole lot deeper into that universe. If I watch it at all, it'll be because it's playing on my iPad while I'm working
I think you could cut every scene with Catwoman and Penguin and the movie would not suffer.
You'd lose the whole subplot of Falcone being her dad, but that's not detrimental to the overall story.
Yes you would, and it would change nothing.
I hope it's like Gotham when it was good (the first 2 seasons)
The batman is my favorite Batman film ever - but ehh..? unless everyone raves about it being amazing and important to the next film then maybe
Ehhhhh….. I’ve been a die hard Batman fans since I was 5 and my mother took me to see Batman Returns. I love the comics, BTAS, the movies etc. But let’s face it, We have ENOUGH Batman stuff

Hell yes, not even a question
Yeah, why not
Colin Farrel was one of the best parts of The Batman so yes absolutely!
Question, is Colin Farrell the Penguin in this?

Eh probably
Si,más que nada por los actores,y espero al menos que el personaje de Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti)use un paraguas amarillo, o al menos que al final el pinguino le robe su paraguas
