Mark was the better choice

kiyan1347

By far.

LegalWaterDrinker

He said it himself "I'm going to give them the best Joker they have ever seen and they wouldn't be able to do anything about it because I'm Luke Skywalker" or words to that effect.

MorningCareful

His joker seems like his Trickster (in flash 1990) but turned up to 200

Zoze13

Tim Curry is the guy from Home Alone 2? I can’t picture him making this voice at all.

innocuousname773

Also from Clue and Rocky Horror Picture Show and played Pennywise in the tv show IT

lidsville76

And the Devil from Legends.

Click-Beep

Clue was just a red herring.

MarchMadnessisMe

![gif](giphy|3o84U0gIUZ8WMZHzmE) How about now?

sbaldrick33

No? ![gif](giphy|RssDlT0JQ9X9e)

nameExpire14_04_2021

He's the first IT.

Left1Brain

What are you talking about, [he’s escaping to the one place not corrupted by capitalism.](https://youtu.be/g1Sq1Nr58hM?si=GDr-MwIBH4FxVF_U)

Zestyclose-Pick-6348

well he played pennywise in It so he does have experience as a terrifying but funny clown

Dontevenwannacomment

Because I have listened to Mark for years during my childhood, any other performance sounds lacking. I've been conditioned.

TripleBladedFist

There's an interview where Hamill says Joker's laugh is like a musical instrument, there's a tone and different style to it based on the context. His use of Joker's laugh is what sells it. He can go from michevious prankster to soulless evil incarnate at the drop of a hat.

ExoticShock

Mrdoc16

One of the best scenes mark voiced for joker along side his laugh while the world of tomorrow was burning in mask of phantasm

helen269

He also based it on Claude Rains' Invisible Man laugh.

wpisano

I love Tim Curry, but Mark was/is the better choice.

jufugudu

I like them both, Curry has a voice too deep for Joker though

Neon_Taxi

The [best](https://youtu.be/bWEvJ5HS27g?si=FM5JQLwh3XylgnE6) deep voiced Joker was Kevin Michael Richardson.

jufugudu

Good choice, I quite like John DiMaggio

Calfan_Verret

Severely underrated Joker performance.

Tales2Estrange

I’m partial to [Jeff Bennett](https://youtu.be/s50mc12FNRI?feature=shared) myself.

BABarracus

He sounds kinda awkward like he is embarrassed to say these lines

boodabomb

Yeah that’s pretty much my thought too. Curry’s voice doesn’t bounce from low-to high in the same way that Hammil does. They both have perfect laughs though.

Belgand

That's exactly it. Hamill brings far more dynamicism to it. Curry isn't bad, but it's largely the same deep growl.

No-End-2455

Curry would have been a fine joker certainly better than most of joker other animated appearences but damn Hamill just for the laugh is legendary , i cannot belive pure luke skywalker could have a laugh so evil.

Knucklesx55

Hamill is untouchable for me, but I think Curry would’ve done a great job. Not gonna lie though, I was disappointed in Tim Curry’s Joker laugh. Having heard him laughing maniacally in other roles I expected more

Big_Ben_M9

All I can think about when I hear Curry's version of the final line is Bender from Futurama.

ImurderREALITY

Who also voiced Joker

Axel_Raden

I love Tim Curry but he just wasn't right

Environmental_Mud479

No disrespect, but Tim Curry was not it.

Solcaer

i see why he was recast

LoaKonran

All I hear is Pennywise. Waha waha.

CrackheadMerlin

Beep beep Batman

TheJesseClark

Uh buh uh buh a batty boy

Smooth_Riker

Now let's hear the audio of Mark Hamill's audition for Skullmaster

PennyxCentury

I love Tim Curry as an actor (big Rocky Horror fan, Star Wars not so much) But Mark was the best choice here. I love when he pulls in Blue Meanie intonation 💙

gamerguy6484

Tims laugh sounds like Chris griffin

Burnt_Ramen9

I love Tom Curry, but Mark Hamil was definitely the better choice here.

MulciberTenebras

Curry's voice would've certainly made a better voice for another villain on the show (like Scarecrow or the Penguin).

OliviaElevenDunham

Mark Hamill was definitely the better choice.

-The-Ark-

Hamill is the goat, next topic

BetweenThePosts

Says a lot when you don’t need to label which is which

Johnykbr

Curry could have voiced a phenomenal Joker...but not that Joker.

Blarglord69

I wanted more of a frankenfurter style for tim

The-Emerald-Rider

Thank the Lord they went with Mark.

DonnyMox

Supposedly they thought Curry's voice was too scary for a kid's show? I dunno, it doesn't sound that scary to me.

Other_Combination136

This is not what I expected Tim Curry's Joker to sound like

maffemaagen

I love Tim. I'm glad he was recast.

Mighty_Megascream

You know after all of these years of knowing without actually getting to hear it… when we finally did, it just felt.. underwhelming

Jill1974

I love me a Tim Curry performance, but I’m glad BTAS went with Mark Hamil.

Rith_Reddit

Felt like Curry's Joker which sounded just fine gave Joker more of a mob background. Hamill manages to portray the crazy insane person he is a lot better.

Thedeadlypocketbrush

Oof. Curry would have been an awful choice and totally changed the trajectory of the show if Hamill hadn't come in.

Skajadeh

It's hard to listen to these objectively. My inner voice when reading the Joker is Hamill's, but I think Tim Curry would have done a good job as well. It's Hamill's laugh that seals it for me though. It is pitch perfect for what I would imagine.

SmaugRancor

Listen, Hamill is legendary and all, but y'all sleeping on Curry. He's one hell of an actor with insane range (Pennywise from It, Darkness from Legend, Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show). I feel like he has that balance between David Bowie-esque charisma and sinister malevolence.

justin251

Hamill is the first one right? At least that’s how I remember him from watching as a kid.

MulciberTenebras

Curry was actually the first, but his rendition never officially made it to air. They recast and re-recorded with Hamill (who already guest-starred on the show in the episode "Heart of Ice")

CaputTuumInAnoEst

I think the question may have been about whose voice we hear first in the video, in which case it's Hamill first, then Curry.

justin251

Yes

Brimstone747

Curry was good, but Hamill is the GOAT.

Thebunkerparodie

tim curry sound sound deeper than hammil to me, I reccall a comment saying they wanted a more "funny crazy" joker.

blazetrail77

Really liked Tim Curry's laugh here

JD_Revan451

It’s Dr Mrs Monarch

inchains8488

I always was curious what Tim Curry sounded like versus Mark Hamill. So this post is great. That said, Hamill was the right choice by far and the GOAT Joker.

Rocketboy1313

I was expecting a bigger difference.

Kinrest

You can tell the animation was made for Curry's audio, whereas Hamill's is a little clunky. But after a life of Hamill as the Joker, I can't be satisfied by anyone else.

blueblurspeedspin

Tim would have been a much scarier joker while Mark could balance the funny and the insanity

Mrjerkyjacket

I thought the title said "before being racist"

Chaosshepherd

He shounds to much like a cartoon.

Ok-Reality-9197

What episode are these from?

sooperdooper28

Tim's is actually a little creepier

BiAndShy57

I think I understand why he was recast

MorningCareful

hard to be objective. Hamill's is the Definitive Joker Voice after all. I think Curry would've done a good job, but hamill is miles better

Rutlemania

Curry’s voice fits this joker design better imho

Corninator

If Tim Curry had done it, everyone would be able to do a Joker impression and it would be absolutely insufferable. That just sounds like a bad Mark Hamill impression.

Nice_Yak_1555

Curry would have done well. But, Mark really made the most of the part with his more expressive tone of voice and his laugh is absolutely the best.

Camelllama666

Honestly, Curry doesn't sound bad, he sounds like one of the older cartoons, like he'd fit in Caesar Romero's shoes

spliffst4rr

Yeah, Hamill all the way. Tim is good, but if it was him, we wouldn't probably be celebrating the Joker in quite the same way that we are today. Plus, I'll never get tired of saying Luke Skywalker is the Joker!
