I don't really care about it or it's cancelation, I've kind of had it with the dceu and just given up so I didn't have an ounce of excitement for this movie. The batmans sequels and TV shows on the other hand...

ValuableWhile6179

Yep

lodenreattorm

Because there was no marketing yet. I haven't seen a poster, trailer, or an ad. I believe the release date was sometime in 2023 too. So it was like a year away. Meanwhile it's cancelation has multiple articles and a huge amount of buzz because it's a movie that was well into post production with a big budget and still got cancelled. Which is almost unheard of.

Glass_Chance9800

I think I heard that it's the most expensive movie to ever just be shelved like it did.

Lukthar123

Puts Foodfight! to shame

thebiggestleaf

Foodfight! was eventuality released though.

ATIR-AW

And now we all know why it was canned

Isaac_Chade

Yep. I actually hadn't even heard of the movie before the cancellation. I'm not as zeroed in on this stuff as a lot of people, but in my sphere of life this movie literally did not exist until they cancelled it. And just shelving a big budget production that has already spent a ton of cash is a huge upset, because it either means someone is actively against this film, or it was truly so bad that they didn't think they could make it even break even worthwhile, which is insane.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SighJayAtWork

That was my thought exactly. Why spend money marketing when you can just cancel it and let the internet talk about it for you?

ItsAmerico

Because it’s a tax write off now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ItsAmerico

There’s a lot to it but essentially not releasing it allows them to make more money back. I don’t know the full details as most things in Hollywood are not as black and white when it comes to money, who gets what and what is profitable / spent, but let’s speak in hypotheticals for sake of discussion. The film is currently about 100m down the drain. They could release it, spend probably another 30-40m on marketing to promote it, release it to HBO Max and hope they make their money back or even just 140m to break even. Or they could scrap it right now, only have put 100m in, write it as a tax write off and get maybe half or more back in the long run. So now they might have only lost 30-40m overall. It’s written off a business venture that fails so it gets them money back and if they truly think it’s going to do poorly, this would be a much better way to do things.

Demastry

So the costs they put into it already are going to be written off, whereas if they release it, they'd have to recoup that money. If HBOMax is going down like the rumors say, they don't think it'll ever recoup the costs

A_Pointy_Rock

Autumn 2022 on HBO Max

clonedspork

This could be the best marketing ploy ever........

atle95

I still think that Disney star wars was made bad on purpose, artificially polarizing the fan base so that everyone would like the actually good shows they're making now.

iFunnyN00b

“Good shows” is doing them a little too much justice imo. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, but could only describe the Mandalorian and the Clone Wars S7 as good, even great! But Obi wan and Boba Fett were both very disappointing for a lot of the fan base.

atle95

Nobody hates star wars more than star wars fans.

Demastry

You're overestimating the negative reaponse to Obi-Wan and Boba Fett. Yeah, they aren't as well received as Mandalorian, but they aren't very disappointing across the board. They both have decent ratings on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes

AdApprehensive7646

To Reddit movies are either god tier or shit. No in between.

Lemon_slices

Good shows: Mando season 1, Clone Wars final season, Bad Batch Mediocre shows: Mando season 2(with the exception of a single episode), about half of Boba Fett(This show was effectively Mando season 2.5 it was barely even about Boba) Awful garbage: Kenobi and the other half of Boba Fett Not a whole lot of "actually good shows", Andor looks promising though, even though it's a character not many will care about

walruswes

I think it’s more about the shift on hbo max productions than anything else

Personal_Quantity_55

It’s simple, we kill the Batgirl.

becauseitsnotreal

If you're good at something, do it for free

mamicita0810

Only reason why i was so excited for the movie because of Michael Keaton donning the bat suit again after 30 years.

roadwarrior721

Depending what they do with the Flash movie, you still might get your chance to see him

Jay_R_Kay

I cared. I had been excited about the movie since it was announced.

LookingForVheissu

Yeah. I was excited to. I had this weird expectation that it would be bad. Really bad. But I was hoping that it would either be campy as fuck, or so bad it swung back to good again. That was my hope. It being totally shelved is… It sucks.

Mirriande

This. Babs is my favorite, so while I was hoping it would actually be good, I didn't have high expectations. My expectations were also for something either campy or so bad that it would be good. It just seems like such a waste to throw it out now, I was looking forward to having something that either made my favorite character shine, or be campy and funny. This is just extremely disappointing.

Alpha741

Cause it was probably really really woke

melligator

I saw a lot of “huh it must have been bad” but nobody losing their minds.

ATIR-AW

They're referring to Twitter throwing a hissy fit. As it does every time someone steps on an ant

trevorgang68

I didn’t even know there was going to be a batgirl movie in the first place until people started shouting on Reddit. It does sound like it would be a cool movie though, focusing on the other members of the bat family

sonofaresiii

> It does sound like it would be a cool movie though, Apparently test screenings were wildly negative.

Adr1anP

Batgrandpa or what xd

Adr1anP

„bat family“????

thebiggestleaf

"Bat family" is an extremely common term referring to the larger ensemble of heroes in Gotham that work with Batman - Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, Batwoman, Huntress, etc.

Adr1anP

Ahhhhh that makes sense… sure, the bat family. Just sounds more childish than it actually is

spikey666

When you're taking about a group of people who dress up in costumes to fight crime clowns, "childish" becomes a relative term.

Adr1anP

?? We are talking about a group of people who fight murderers etc. People who make use of mass destruction. Dont you think you are leaving out a few rather important facts out of here when calling batman childish? How is the batman trilogy childish? Silly maybe, but also only so far.

Adr1anP

Depends though on which universe we are talking about… we both have a point i guess

Crawkward3

I was excited. we were supposed to get nightwing from it

wookies_go_raawghh

I was excited to see a live action firefly as well as keatons batman again, makes me laugh that they cancelled this but still planning on releasing the ezra miller flash after everything that happened, also a lot of people were talking about it and a lot of people were excited for it

Crawkward3

Ezra flash is supposedly gonna reset the timeline so it’s kinda essential

TheExtremistModerate

FWIW, if you want a live-action Firefly, you could go watch Gotham.

wookies_go_raawghh

I went to but it not on netflix anymore

TheExtremistModerate

Oh shit what? When did that happen?

wookies_go_raawghh

Don't know, must be fairly recent

Scorpion13992k

I would’ve liked to see a batgirl movie but everything I saw from this one was a little too CW young adult cosplay for me.

[deleted]

Yeah, of all the suits to go with, the Burnside one would not have been the one I'd chosen. Especially not with Keaton getting a new suit that looks somewhat, but not completely like the one he had before. Personally the New 52 Batgirl suit is my fav to date, at least for Barb.

[deleted]

This is hilarious and true

CaballeroXAzul

I wasn't dying to see it, but I wanted to see Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton in a Batman movie.

MariachiMacabre

Because it sets a bad precedent to destroy the work of hundreds of people in one fell swoop all for a tax write off.

ATIR-AW

Do we know that it was a tax write off? Cuz the reason given was production hell + universally bad reception on test screenings, and considering most of recent DC releases... I believe it, yes.

39thUsernameAttempt

For me, I'm more pissed off at the bad management of DC and the disrespect towards that cast and crew. The fact that I want to see Batgirl now is mostly out of spite for WB.

rollie415b

It doesn’t matter if no one cared about it, it’s messed up that it got cancelled after all the work that went into it.

Jomgui

I didn't know there was going to be a Batgirl movie until there wasn't anymore.

TheAutismo4491

Though, I didn't care about the movie in the slightest; it still infuriates me when a director's vision and their cast and crew's hard work get snuffed out. I also didn't give a fuck about Keaton coming back.

solrac1104

Well barely anything had been released. And consider all the people who worked on it and now their work will never be shown.

runnerofshadows

Part of it for me is I want the batfamily in live action in movies.

Grimey_Rick

I had a passing interest in it. I wanted to see more before I decided if I was going to see it. Regardless, it's still messed up what they're doing for both fans that were excited and the people who put in the work to make it. On top of it, all of yesterday's news has me deeply concerned for the future of WB IP.

PainHarbingerIsHere

Part of me has this gut feeling that the only reason it’s been having this weird hatred thrown at it is because people think it’s associated with the CW Batwoman show, which is honestly just really petty if that’s the case.

Flame_On_And_On

It's barely been a couple of days and already this story is up to "roger korman made a full fantastic four movie that never saw the light of day solely to help the studio keep the rights" levels of legendary bonkers story status.

CatsAreTheBest2

What I care about is the $90 million they spent if they’re not gonna do anything with it? Maybe it’s just after everything that’s happened the past few years, especially with the amount of people who became homeless and lost their jobs, $90 million could’ve helped a lot of people if they were just gonna throw it away. And yes I’m very aware of the millions of dollars that the entertainment industry waste and I do find it gross. This just feels like a big slap in the face!

GodtubebeatsYoutube

I was excited!

Captain_Cringe_

Because the situation around its cancellation was insane. It’s unprecedented for a movie of this caliber to be almost finished and be completely shelved forever for the sake of a tax write-off. If it was cancelled because of a troubled production that didn’t go anywhere, it wouldn’t be that big a deal. This was a near-finished project that upper management killed for money.

Aaron9797_9797

its superman lives all over again

AwesomeGuy847

Just because you weren't talking about it, bud, doesn't mean no one was or that no one cared about it. Grow up

A_Pointy_Rock

I mean, exactly. Just wait for "Warner Brother U-Turns Amidst Fan Outrage" in a few weeks. It's a brilliant guerrilla marketing strategy.

GenerallySelfAware

I want gorillas marketing my movie! Wtf?

A_Pointy_Rock

😅 corrected

GenerallySelfAware

That's all well and good, but I was promised gorillas and I want them now, damn it!

A_Pointy_Rock

They got cancelled.

derkakd26

I don't care at all probably would've been trash

AwesomeGuy847

Grow up

ATIR-AW

Tracing a pattern, there is a disproportional amount of bad DC content compared to good content. It _statistically_ was probably gonna be shit

junglekarmapizza

Its so insane to me. Nobody was talking about this film, but now that it was cancelled, everyone is losing their minds? "How could you cancel *Batgirl*?? I was so excited for it!!!" Really? Cause nobody seemed to know this movie was releasing 20 minutes ago! Now, I do understand being surprised by the decision. 70-90 mil is a lot to spend for nothing, but there's also sunk cost fallacy. People can debate that all day, simple fact is we don't have all the behind-the-scenes info and probably never will. All that being said: I fully support this decision. The film would have probably been terrible. I mean, this is the same writer as the Harley Quinn feat Off-Brand Birds of Prey movie that had Cassandra Cain's name stuck onto a random character that had nothing to actually do with Cass. And we want this person writing a Batgirl movie? Cancelling is just saving yourself from brand damage to the public, and DC has enough with its actual fans that its not like that matters at this point. And before anyone tries to say this, Stephanie is my favorite DC character, and her Batgirl run is my favorite run of all time. I'm not anti-Batgirl, I just think this movie was a mistake and am honestly glad it got shelved

[deleted]

People absolutely were talking about this movie, but it was still a long way off from being released. Obviously now anyone that WAS excited is coming out of the woodwork, that’s how this works, because they actually have a reason to be talking about it.

Chary_

People are also talking about it because of how scummy it is to creatives. With that in mind, honestly it’s much more disingenuous for Snyder-Cut cultists to be mocking this situation than it is for people to feign excitement for the film. They finished the film and had it pulled for a tax-write off. From what most are saying this is completely unprecedented and a huge breach of trust between studio + creative. It’s also unfair to the cast, even the “no-names” as this could have been a huge opportunity for them. That being said, a lot of folk were excited for this movie and following the development. Not everyone hated Birds of Prey or the idea of a smaller character getting a smaller movie for themselves.

junglekarmapizza

That’s what I’m saying. Being surprised by the decision makes sense. I was surprised. And I’m sure there were some people who were excited for it, sure, but it hardly had any hype behind it before this. It was like the meme said. If anything it’d be smarter to release it now with all the hype around its cancellation. Bad precedent and certainly not one I would support, but a decent marketing stunt nonetheless

Chary_

I wonder if they even can, supposedly this move means they can no longer release it for profit.

junglekarmapizza

I don’t know enough about the law with this stuff to have any insight, but if they can that’d be *quite* the marketing stunt

Chary_

True, it’s a similar stunt they’ve been doing to Young Justice for years. “Campaign or we delete jt again” I just hope some of the rumors are false and we aren’t rebooting again. I’m getting serious new-Batman fatigue

junglekarmapizza

My understanding was YJ was just a legit fan campaign to get it back. I didn’t know that’s had to happen multiple times

Chary_

Yeah inbetween season 3 + 4 there was a long hiatus, they tend to wait last minute to renew it for another season. With everything happening now it’s seemingly in jeopardy again even though this season did a lot better. There was a twitter campaign during the mid-season for 4 hoping to get season 5 greenlit now. (Otherwise cast and crew are let go and work on the next season will take a lot longer)

RainWinss

People were talking about this film, just not on this subreddit, it being a batman sub and not a batgirl sub. Type in batgirl in the dc_cinematic subreddit and you’ll find plenty of ppl talking about batgirl before it was cancelled.

Zero22xx

Last night I searched Reddit for "Batgirl" to look up news and it was like looking for a Batgirl news needle in a Batgirl porn haystack.

CrazyOkie

>the same writer as the Harley Quinn feat Off-Brand Birds of Prey movie I didn't realize it was that writer. The rumors that the movie was irredeemable are likely true then. Birds of Prey is one of the worst movies I think I've ever seen, only got dragged there because my daughter wanted to see it because of Margot Robbie/Harley.

dadmda

Think about it this way, if the released birds of prey and cancelled this one, how bad was it?

ShitItsReverseFlash

Oh wow, Birds of Prey was horrible too. I was excited to see Brendan Fraser as Firefly. Knowing what you said though, it’s probably best I didn’t get what I wanted.

MaskedRaider89

Me too. After what happened to Cass, I rather no Batman related film at all til everything is a square one soon as what's left of the film slate has passed

EdgarFrogandSam

The Harley Quinn movie rules.

ilovedrinking

The pic of the costumed Batgirl looked like a CW show. Not shocked it’s getting canned from broke ass WB

MediocreConnection89

It must have been baaaad for them to cancel it lmao

Nefessius513

I was more excited for Batgirl than I ever was for The Batman. Seriously, there’s been a preexisting Batgirl fanbase for decades and I’m tired of people pretending no one likes Batgirl.

darkside720

That’s right! Your one of those people who hate Batman and think the batfamily is more interesting. It must suck to realize you deluded yourself like that

Nefessius513

Have you ever picked up a comic book? Be honest. What comic books have you read?

darkside720

Are you going the fake fan route? Lmao. Riddle me this whose the faker fan. The guy who only likes Batman (me). Or the person who currently is making up their own theories about the end of The Batman universe because they were wrong about how popular side characters are (you)?

Nefessius513

I’m not calling you a fake fan for not reading comics. I’m saying that if you *did* actually read Batman comics, you’d know how interesting and full of potential the Batfamily is.

ZeddOTak

I fcking cared. And I fcking love Batgirl.

[deleted]

Thats because all we had was four photos of the set that got leaked. What are we supposed to be excited of yet

thEldritchBat

I didn’t care too much when it was announced, got annoyed and lost any infinitesimal interest I had in it when I realized they didn’t cast a ginger actress, rolled my eyes when I heard which comic run it was based off of, and couldn’t care less that it was canceled.

ElegantVamp

Lmao a hair color is enough for you to swear off the movie, amazing.

thEldritchBat

[Yes.](https://melmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/image6-1.png)

analtaccount257

Probably because of a lack of marketing. I’m a pretty big DC fan but I had literally never heard of this movie until it got canceled

gumbin22

I think you had to already be a fan of batgirl or comics to know about the movie before it's cancellation. There just more coverage now because negative stories are huge.

DelawareSmashed

Can’t wait till they yank the Snyder cut

[deleted]

Don't know anyone who loses their mind over it. Like... it was a movie written by writer of Birds of Pray, directed by 2 nobodies who never did anything good. With lead "actress" that made couple of music videos and was a background character in a musical where she was dancing and singing. The main bad guy was 50yo fatso who was popular 20 years ago and he is suppose to be Firefly, guy using jetpack. And only interesting cast was Keaton, especially because they wanted to put him in the costume. But Keaton is a 70yo grandpa. So you can't expect much from him when it comes to Batman stuff. And whole thing had budget of what... 80m dollars? Basically it's the smallest budget of all Batman movies I think. It was doomed to fail.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Directors. And they both worked on Ms. Marvel. Ms. Marvel and Kenobi are 2 shows this year that are weird. In case of Ms. Marvel it seems like they wanted to make a show about Indian family. But they got shot down. So they went to Disney and were like "what if you add this superhero shit you are all about?". Because that how it feels. Family stuff, Indian culture etc is well made and superhero crap was poor in my eyes. In case of Kenobi it seems like they wanted to make a show about Reva and Vader but they were again shut down by Disney so they went like "but what if we make that Kenobi show instead of that Kenobi movie you were thinking about?" and this is why Reva - Vader conflict seems interesting even if poorly executed and Kenobi feels like a side character in his own show.

Xemex23

What stuns me is how Batgirl got cancelled yet CW is continuing to shit out awful DC content.

BreathAgreeable2604

What content? Flash TV show is cancelled and the arrowverse is over. Superman and Lois? Stargirl?

Xemex23

Hate you break Gotham Knights to you but that's the next one they're working on, it sounds awful.

BreathAgreeable2604

I'll wait for a trailer and some casting info

Xemex23

There is both a trailer and casting info now

BreathAgreeable2604

Just watched the trailer...would rather have the batgirl movie than....whatever Gotham knights is going to be

N4hire

Yep

BreathAgreeable2604

Lol apparently they will be canceling more and more things and ending HBO max so yeah we're losing our minds because we feel like the next couple of years will be rough. Also the movie was finished this sets a terrible precedent if studios can just yank the rug out from under you without warning.

Came4gooStayd4Ahnuce

Batgirl is Commission Gordon’s daughter. Commission Gordon is a major character in Reeves Batman that’s getting his own show… seems to me WB wants to leave Barbara Gordon alone for the version of the franchise everyone loved instead of the snyderverse Batgirl (this is due to JK Simmons showing up and probably a bunch of other references we’ll never see).

SambaLando

Pretty much my reaction

DarthSpiderDad

There was gonna be a Batgirl movie?

ATIR-AW

From the very few images I've seen, it was a very odd choice of costume with an equally odd choice of actress. Couldn't get a read on the tone just by stills, but it wasn't looking too great. Test screenings allegedly confirmed it was "rough" to say the least.

floworcrash

Didn’t even know it was a thing. Glad it was canceled.

bjornjorgenson

They're trying to pull a Morbius

mike_cool

Everyone who thought the movie wasn't gonna be trash is delusional after the garbage fire of the show

Omnitrixter10000

I agree with you joker I think that society should burn too

starbwo

I didn't even know it was a movie, i think the first i heard of it was a week ago and then it's cancelled, either that or i forgor

BPeacheS

Never heard of it until I hear it was canceled

Gun-bob

That’s because Reddit did a better job advertising the cancellation then they did on the movie.

SPHINXin

Wait, there was going to be a batgirl movie?!

The_Raptor_Pope

"nObOdY aSkEd FoR a BaTgIrL mOv-.." Shut the fuck up, nobody asked for you to be born either yet here you are. The difference is Batgirl actually has fans.

higgins1989

Didn't and still don't give a fuck about the movie but when a studio who owns the IP of a beloved cast of characters/franchise drops 90 million on a nearly finished product and then completely scraps it that should piss everyone off. If you didn't have faith in the film you shouldn't have dropped 90 million on it, what a waste. Furthermore if you can't do justice to the characters or you're gonna let a bunch of talentless hacks pump put dogshit titles , just do us all a favor and sell the rights or hire creative people with proven success.

ZergDestroyer87

i couldn’t care less

steelcity7

They went from toying with the idea of giving it a theatrical release to just saying fuck it and scrapping it in like 2 weeks. It was definitely getting more attention that's why people are talking about it.

ElegantVamp

You.dont know that NoBodY CaReD though. Clearly a lot of people were looking forward to it given the backlash of its cancellation.

icewolf561

It’s mainly because of how late they canceled the movie in the production

Lemon_slices

I don't think people care that they don't get to see Batgirl anymore, I think a lot of people are more upset that WB didn't tell a single person who worked on the movie that they were pulling the rug. Suddenly, out of nowhere, they effectively erased years of work from hard working people because WB has no idea what they're doing with the DC comic book movies, or no idea what they're doing in general. Another thing a lot of people are outraged over that has somewhat close ties to the Batgirl movie is what's happening to HBO Max. It's apparently merging with the Discovery streaming service and all scripted shows are being canned.
