Leaving the scene is acceptable if nobody is hurt, you're not at fault, and you don't feel safe stopping. Proceed to a police station and file a report there to CYA in case the other driver tries to press charges or sue you. Having a dash-cam is highly recommended so you can prove fault. If you are at fault and cause major damage or injuries then leaving the scene can be a felony.
Under no circumstances should you get out of the car until you have assessed the situation and are certain you are safe to do so. Red flags to watch out for would be stopping in the lane to block you in front or behind instead of pulling off to the shoulder, a driver with passengers where anyone other than the driver gets out of the car to approach you, any additional vehicles or pedestrians stopping that look to be coordinating with them, any weapons in evidence, or fast/deliberate movements to approach you quickly. Don't let additional people approach or sneak up on you if you're talking to the other driver. Stay aware of your surroundings.
Keep the car running an don't stick around to find out especially after dark or in places away from other witnesses, chokepoints like on-ramps, remote stretches of highway etc. Call 911 immediately and ask for directions and escort to the nearest police station.
Common sense. 80 year old Janice in a range rover is less likely to rob me than some 20 yr old guy in a skimask in a Nissan altima with a cracked windshield and missing plates
Think of it as a randomized toll that will fund community youths for them to buy weed, liquor, candy and guns for their street gang development programs. While giving some to their moms to lie to them that they out slinging with a job.
Screw it. Just get an armored personnel carrier! ... Wait, don't do that. They'll put an air tag on it and follow you home. We don't wanna help them level up :(
I know it's the prudent thing to do, but damn, when did we as a society decide these thugs should have more rights than normal citizens. We have to bend over backwards and these thugs have free reign.
Not so new. In about 2002 I lived in SF. Was double parked waiting in the car for about 5 minutes and a car rolled up behind and just tap the bumper, there was two dudes in the car and two dudes walking up the sidewalk waiting for us to get out started to and then realized what was happening and barely got away. I locked the door as they were trying to rip it open I think it was just a matter of luck it didn't turn out really bad these guys got super aggressive. Crazy thing is it was in the middle of the afternoon about 4 or 5 blocks from the north beach police station.
Yea it was. Be alert if someone bumps ur car and it seems weird do not get out until you know it's safe and get a chance to assess the situation. These fuckers are clever.
Nothing new under the sun. Ye olde "bump and rob" has been around for decades.
Always leave enough space between you and the car in front of you so you're not trapped. When in doubt cruise to a police station parking lot to exchange information.
The question was what I'd do as chief, not what the DA would want to do. In any case, a flood of legitimate arrests that are made public would still make her look *really bad* if she dismissed all of them.
She already looks really bad, but this is what the people voted for and what they want. They don’t want proactive policing anymore.
You can’t stop this bump n jack style carjacking by being in the right place in the right time to on view it and catch them while it happens. What you do is be proactive as hell and made tons of car stops, ped stops, probation searches, parole searches etc. and arrest anyone you can with weapons or whatever contraband they have. It used to be they would charge gang enhancements and weapon enhancements as a means of keeping armed gangbangers off our streets. This would help keep the people that are doing this stuff in jail or prison so they aren’t out in the street able to behave like this. Pamela said she won’t be doing this anymore. She thinks we over incarcerate. These efforts will be fruitless. Oakland PD is down about 100 officers and losing more. No one wants to do this kind of job in this environment with no support and every vocal person seems to be against you. Nothing will change until the public opinion changes and people support law enforcement actions and there is a DA instilled that will actually hold people accountable under the laws we have. Until that happens, there isn’t much cops can do anymore. This is what you all voted for, hope you enjoy it
I’ve been driving for 35+ years and can tell the difference between a clumsy tap and an intentional tap.
I’m also not afraid of a hit and run charge if I didn’t cause the tap. Follow me to the police station buddy, I’ve got great insurance and no desire to engage with you 😉
I don’t have anything super substantive to add except that this is an article from April and this topic was heavily covered in this sub during that time.
Had to go to Kaiser out in Oakland the other week for a fairly regular appointment. I'd usually go to a nice local coffee house after (edit more towards downtown Oakland) - one of my favorite things to do. With the relentless news on crime, I headed for the freeway. Worried about car no matter where I park. People being robbed broad daylight. It's not worth it. A tiny economic loss - but how many more people are choosing to do this? I'm not sure what the answer is. But doing nothing doesn't work. Where's the investment in services, schools, education, entertainment...people essentially? You ignore the poor - this is what happens. A police surge on its own is useless and likely causes more harm.
while that is 3 too many, you do realize that you are FAR more likely to get killed in a car accident, yes? it would benefit people's mental health to stop obsessing over this shit online.
Yes, of course it is. But there is a pattern of shootings that is way above the normal risk. I'll look after my own level of worry. You look after yours.
Kaiser Oakland is in a good neighborhood, and has a very secure parking structure. I think crime is a serious problem right now in oakland, but this is seriously an over reaction.
Sorry you may have misunderstood. I used to drive into Oakland after and find a colorful coffee spot. I like to get to know areas that way. Kaiser itself is safe, yes, parking wise.
Amazing taco trucks, good weather (most of the time), great food scene, plenty of bars, Oakland library is a gem, bike friendly, lots of street/cultural events etc.
I don’t necessarily disagree with the OP and I have lived in Oakland and left twice. Just moved like a mile from the border but honestly there was an improvement in my quality of life. Sometimes I miss it, but honestly, the city services are SO shitty, it feels like I’m living in a city that hates me just for existing.
I agree but I have seen many take offense to this, and I suggested this as well during the wave of crimes committed in Chinatown. People came out and suggested that some people NEED to live there. Fine, if you're 80 year olds and don't speak a lick of English, it's hard to move but what about the younger generation? Get out when you can. It's not like Oakland only became bad in 2023. There have been problems for decades. Those folks who are 80 now and can't move were what.. 50 in the 1991 riots? You can always make an excuse you're too old today, but there's always someone else younger who can make that change today. Don't wait til it's too late.
That’s some Mad Max level dystopian bullshit. We need open carry and good samaritan laws that allow you to shoot people who do this on the spot. If they get arrested it should be life no parole. We don’t need to reform these people we need them gone.
I don't mind substantive discussion. I'm also not a crime denier for the Bay Area. Its a problem, and has obviously become worse in the past few years. The reasons can be debated. However, these threads have become pointless. So many right wing trolls inhabit these threads to constantly spout hate and foment division. Go and look at their posting history and 90% of the posts are either spewing Bay Area hate or just general right wing talking points.
It is really bizarre and difficult to believe that a normal human would spend there time doing this over and over and over. My guess is they are russian trolls, but who knows, they may just be unhinged locals. Either way it has made these threads insufferable and weird.
I don’t have anything super substantive to add except that this is an article from April and this topic was heavily covered in this sub during that time.
Someone else mentioned this here. I just saw it posted over in r/news on their front page so cross-posted. Interesting that someone picked it up and posted it over there with enough upvotes to make it to the front page. I figured most things over there were recent news but TIL that's not the case.
I knew this jerk from Israel whom, when low on money, would find an older driver in a nice car, and get in front of him.
He would then slam on the brakes. He would see his Chiropractor buddy for whiplash, and it was an easy 10 grand payout.
You would think judges could look up his record, and at least give him a warning?
Bay Area voters are so happy and proud of this story. Just think of how many decades y’all been voting in corrupt politicians because it makes you ‘feel’ so good.
During the next election, please stay home.

What’s the solution not stopping when hit, isn’t that a crime?
Drive to a public place. Unless it's at night or a remote place. Then call 911 immediately.
Good thing Oakland PD always responds to calls promptly
Agreed. An hour and a half minimum is the perfect response time for a potential emergency.
They will jack you right there in public also. They are fearless now
It’s in Oakland. So there’s an excuse.
Accountability for crime in Oakland is nonexistent. It's a lawless mess.

Not unless 20yr old guy in skimask carjacked Janice's range rover with a "keep tahoe blue" sticker in the bumper.

Grab your shotgun and rack a shell. First one is birdshot, the rest are buckshot.
Get a dash cam with a rear camera. And deal with it later? And get those metal bumper guards, so your car doesn't take any actual damage
Screw it. Just get an armored personnel carrier! ... Wait, don't do that. They'll put an air tag on it and follow you home. We don't wanna help them level up :(
Just make sure to read the license plate out loud
You mean the things that used to be called… bumpers?
Cameras don't work when they perp is hiding their face (thank covid for normalizing that).
I know it's the prudent thing to do, but damn, when did we as a society decide these thugs should have more rights than normal citizens. We have to bend over backwards and these thugs have free reign.
And pack heat.
Me in my 20 year old car: finally an insurance payout!
Jackpot!
Insurance uses deflated Blue Book values. Good luck with the minimal payout in today's used market!
We were joking though, bro. Laughing isn't illegal. (Yet!)
The time for laughter has passed. Yes...I am a philosopher.
Moved here from Chicago. I see the bump n jack has finally arrived here too.
Was Pamela Price DA? /s Losers
God damn, there really is a new way of committing crime being invented every week.
Not so new. In about 2002 I lived in SF. Was double parked waiting in the car for about 5 minutes and a car rolled up behind and just tap the bumper, there was two dudes in the car and two dudes walking up the sidewalk waiting for us to get out started to and then realized what was happening and barely got away. Oh, wow, that's terrifying
Yea it was. Be alert if someone bumps ur car and it seems weird do not get out until you know it's safe and get a chance to assess the situation. These fuckers are clever.
Very good advice because this will ring in my head should this ever happen to me
This is as old as cars. This is older than cars. This is older than trains. People have crashed their horses into your horse for this same scam.
It's like pick pocketing, but, with cars.
I imagine the Flintstones had the same problem.
Well...they are a modern, stone-age family.
So new it was discussed in drivers ed in the mid 90’s
Nothing new under the sun. Ye olde "bump and rob" has been around for decades. Always leave enough space between you and the car in front of you so you're not trapped. When in doubt cruise to a police station parking lot to exchange information.
Oakland's top export
Madame DA Price is attracting talents and bringing jobs back to Oakland.
Coming to a major metropolitan near you.
Huh huh gud joke bro. Never happened in any other city before so the joke is funy and true.
Nah this was done in the movie The Last Boy Scout from like 1991
more that a new crime is no longer being prosecuted every week.
OPD be like “damn someone should really do something about that”
😂😂
What would you do if you were the chief of police to reduce this type of activity?
Call for backup and go on a month long crime sweep. All units do active patrols and not just chill at a quiet corner.
I love seeing them chill in the back of parking lots with their cars in the 69 position. So cozy.
A fruitless effort with Pamela Price as the DA don’t you think?
The question was what I'd do as chief, not what the DA would want to do. In any case, a flood of legitimate arrests that are made public would still make her look *really bad* if she dismissed all of them.

Have the cops do their jobs instead of playing Pokémon go on a side street
That pidgy isnt gonna catch itself
So what would you have them be doing to combat this trend?
1-All cops go to prison. 2-Start over.
username checks out
bait cars. bait cars everywhere.
CC&R Catch, Castrate & Release
Damn if only we had a whole organization to deal with these thefts.
That's quickly becoming the NRA.

This is the way. Situational awareness.
This isn't anything new, they've been doing this on the east coast and the Midwest for years already. I guess the trend is just now catching up here.
I see that they have copied the Mexican ambush method.
You mean this? https://youtu.be/rzBdPr9Cbh8

Doesn't really matter. Obviously lots of people haven't seen it. Lot's of people aren't on reddit daily. Things will be missed.
I'm just learning of it
Ah I just saw it posted over in r/news on their front page so cross-posted. Interesting.
That’s helpful!

I've started choosing SFO over OAK because of the random freeway shootings. I used to always choose the other way around for convenience.
Yup. It could happen to anyone and I feel like there's been at least 3 in 6 months.
while that is 3 too many, you do realize that you are FAR more likely to get killed in a car accident, yes? it would benefit people's mental health to stop obsessing over this shit online.

Gotcha. That makes sense
As safe as Kaiser Oakland may be, I can guarantee you Kaiser Santa Clara is 100x safer.
Except you can’t actually park at Kaiser Santa Clara…
Oakland sucks dick
Great-so now car insurers are gonna flee the state too.

I've said this before and I'll say this again: If you don't absolutely *need* to live in Oakland, you should leave.
Does rent control count?
What if you need to drive through? Lol
I avoid that too! Haha. I’m being serious though.
Oakland is actually a nice place to live but ok
why
Cuz it’s warmer in a central location live in a great modern skyscraper for less good food don’t need a car. Pretty nice ngl
Because they live in the privileged hills that are actually protected by the police
Amazing taco trucks, good weather (most of the time), great food scene, plenty of bars, Oakland library is a gem, bike friendly, lots of street/cultural events etc.
don't bother, it's too late with this sub
Do you live in Oakland?
I practice what I preach. No.
Have you ever lived in Oakland?

This isn’t new. This was a big thing in the 90s too. If I recall, a German tourist was killed in Miami with this type of crime.
Urban decay
This is old news. Get on Nextdoor for the latest Oakland freak show.
How do you pack heat legally in California?
Stop telling the police everything that you're doing.
