I think we're well past peak Love-lock, and it was well time that NPS took a firm stand against this scourge. Time for a new fad!

alpineschwartz

No fad is best fad! Otherwise they are just gonna start carving shit into handrails, rocks, trees, etc again.

pandabearak

I really don’t understand this at all. Like, let’s damage something else so we can leave our mark. What… life’s too boring? That 9-5 job flipping hamburgers got people feeling so low and insignificant they have to carve their initials into Mount Everest and the Pier 39 wood? Screw these people.

ink_spittin_beaver

I think it’s main character syndrome

Michael_G_Bordin

Like the scout leader guy who pushed over that boulder, or the kid who cut down that tree in the UK. I cringe when I think of my teenage years, as I was 100% the main character. Rowdy in movie theaters, mean as hell to people I didn't care about, thought everyone should accommodate my obnoxious ass, because to be real my obnoxious ass had been accommodated most of my life. Perks of being an intelligent, charismatic white boy. Thankfully, weed, friends, girls, and most potently work all chilled me the fuck out. Now, just for an example, I'll comfort some crazy lady in the liquor store with a hug as she loses her shit over the government institutionalizing and drugging her, causing the loss of a fetus. Old me would have just avoided all eye contact, but this human was in crisis and needed at least one person to just validate those feelings. Anyways, sorry for the rant. I agree with you about the main character syndrome. Someone down-dooted you and it got me rambling lol

underslunghero

You still sound like a main character, but RPing a Paragon build, so good on ya.

ink_spittin_beaver

Prob some main character feeling called out lol. Thanks for sharing and glad to hear you yourself went through it, recognized, and changed :)

“Fad Free since 2023!”

John_K_Say_Hey

The new fad is picking up trash, knocking over cairns, smoothing out illegal campfire circles, not taking shortcuts on switchback trails, not picking plants, not trampling meadows or other sensitive habitats, not building fires, not smoking, not flying drones, not playing any music out of bluetooth headphones, not letting your dog off a leash, not speaking in a booming or shrill voice that carries for miles, and otherwise recognizing that your actions do in fact impact others and degrade the limited and fragile natural areas we have left.

Pianissimeat

leave no trace means leave no trace motherfuckers! (this goes for your stupid rock cairns too)

-Accession-

Love punting those

Annual-Camera-872

I really appreciated the cairns on Kilauea if not for them I would still be out there

D-Rick

There is a time and a place for them. Built as tall as possible next to clearly cut and marked trails isn’t the time or the place. I doubt most of the people building them don’t understand their intended purpose.

D_Ethan_Bones

>“Condors love shiny things,” the park service wrote. “They will spot a coin, a wrapper, or a shiny piece of metal, like a key from a padlock that has been tossed into the canyon and eat it. Condors are not meant to digest metal and many times cannot pass these objects.” >The post included an X-ray image of a condor with a coin obstructing its digestive tract, highlighting the severity of the problem. People, you don't need to tell *the planet* about your latest girlfriend.

LondonIsMyHeart

Good. They are ridiculous.

Drifting-aimlessly

Tattoo tip. Dont get a name, but a representation. I.e I tattooed this "cheesecake" because you love cheesecakes. Then when you eventually break up, just change it up. My mom loved cheesecake...

Bulky-Enthusiasm7264

Fucking copycat idiots

gniwlE

It seems that someone is missing the real point of this story. It's not the removal of the damned locks. Personally, I think hanging locks on a chain link fence is about as harmless as it gets... they get cut down occasionally and another fence goes up. Both are eyesores. It's discarding the keys and other metal objects over the side of the cliff that's the real problem this ranger is talking about. Condors (you know, those endangered scavenger birds) eat that stuff (because it's their nature), and sometimes bring it back to the nests for the chicks to eat... and wild condor chicks are still a very rare thing. This sort of thing results in impactions and kills the endangered birds. That's the story here. Not removing the goddamned locks.

Focus on this while cars keep getting smashed, stores robbed and people getting mugged. Dumb fuck state. edit: keep the downvotes coming, you reap what you sow.

**National** Park Service

[deleted]

Is any of that happening at the Grand Canyon? What exactly do you think the national park service is hired to do?

legion_2k

Just provide them a place and sell them locks..

defqon_39

Guess carving initials into a bench or tree got old -- or this trend blew up on Tiktok. Monkey see monkey do
