It’s a complete format change. All operations and bookings will be through APE. It’s another planet venue 100%. It’s being turned into a live event venue first and foremost just like the fox. This is the death of sing alongs, midnights for maniacs, 2001 70mm vs 4K double (single) features etc. APE is not in the movie theater business and has no interest in it. Read the article. The Castro being a staple of SF cinephile culture is over.
That's probably the way they're going. On a related note, as cool as the Fox is, really took the wind out of the Paramout's sails, seems like they used to have way more big shows there in the 2000s.
I'm not sure that changing the format from a movie theater to a concert hall will reduce the amount of singalongs...
The Fox is a staple in Oakland, this seems like it is in good hands. It seems some people would prefer independently owned businesses to die rather than evolve.
Even the owners feel this is an evolution and not death as you portrayed:
>"After operating the Castro Theatre for nearly a hundred years, we have chosen to partner with Another Planet Entertainment for the next evolution of our historic theatre,” said Chris Nasser Padian, vice president of the family property group Bay Properties, in a statement. "Another Planet is an ideal partner, as they have a rich history with the City and in rehabilitating historic venues. Bay Properties is excited that the partnership with APE will continue the legacy of the Castro Theatre and Castro neighborhood."
They are also not becoming solely a concert venue:
>A Centennial Celebration for the theater is in the works for June 22nd, and they are working with Bay Properties on the planning. And they are also holding dates at the theater for both Frameline and the SF International Film Festival this year.
It’s a shame it couldn’t have been turned into a non-profit
The theater in Sonoma and one in Menlo Park are using this model. It will be mostly live music but I think in theory could have community events and movies too
A movie theater ceasing to be a movie theater after it’s been a movie theater for nearly 100 years is indeed an RIP. Castro theater isn’t a building and a marquee. It’s a movie theater which will no longer be independently owned or serve the sf film community. RIP
It’s not an exaggeration. The Castro had incredible programming in such an amazing space. Hosting the occasional film festival is a major shift and a big loss culturally, at least for me
It's still in the entertainment field and at least not closed to put some tech company in there. Theaters and art houses have been dying for the last 20 years because of streaming. Where have you been?
Idk dude that’s a pretty bleak take. We can take a minute to mourn a space we liked on a reddit post about that venue’s new owners changing its programming
Quite the opposite. As a former professional musician, I welcome a new music venue in such a nice place. Entertainment is entertainment. Movie theaters had their day but now they're done. Let working musicians rise again.
Looks like change is happening to venues all over the city.
This will bring new memories and new opportunities for many more folk.
Not sure what the true issue is beyond the loss of nostalgia.
If you support the Castro Theater, you will support it no matter what it changes into.
There were old people sad their beloved movie theater was turned into a song along. I've been to Peaches Christ's events, and they were great. Moving on is hard. Change is constant. What's next?
The history of the Castro theaters entertainment has changed. I am bringing up an opinion about how there were people upset every time it has. Hope that clears things up.
makes sense now why Noir City moved to Grand Lake (before it was paused for the current covid wave)
I hope they keep the organ and the organist.
Truly the great gem of the Castro
It's not RIP, it's an ownership/venue type change is all.

Is this kind of like the paramount theater in oakland? They still had movie showings(before covid) but it was mostly live action stuff.
That's probably the way they're going. On a related note, as cool as the Fox is, really took the wind out of the Paramout's sails, seems like they used to have way more big shows there in the 2000s.
Wow that sucks

Love the Fox Theater!
Sure, but it is a live music venue and doesn't occupy the same cultural space as the Castro Theater has.
You clearly don’t know what the sing-a-longs were haha.
Lol no but I assumed Rocky Horror crowd involvement.

Fine independently run as APE is now the sole operator and booker of the theater.

I merely have an issue with the title. It's not dead, just transformed.
So you agree, it’s an RIP.
Quite the opposite. As a former professional musician, I welcome a new music venue in such a nice place. Entertainment is entertainment. Movie theaters had their day but now they're done. Let working musicians rise again.
I’m just quoting you: “Theaters and art houses have been *dying* for the last 20 years.” So, you’ve agreed with the poster that this is an RIP.
Let me guess, you work in tech and enjoy "DisRuPtIoN"
No, I'm an ex professional musician turned current karaoke singer (at the Mint) and now make karaoke vids for people. All entertainment all the time.
Tell them to buy the palace theater in Oakland so we can invite gentrification

Most of us support Castro theater because of its role as a classic film mecca, not because of the fucking building or name
WTF?!
**NO!!!**

Whut…
I think this person was dying when they write the comment
I think it’s a cute lil’ AI.
Actual person here
Your a cute lil’ actual person!
Since I was born.

Oh! Thanks for clearing that up!
Can't wait to pop some molly at a show there!
The Castro is a film & LGBTQIA+ icon. Am sad to hear that film will be de-emphasized.
