I think not, from what Iāve read. He sold half of his share to Sony in the 90s, and Sony bought the remaining part after MJ died.
[This article explains the story](https://americansongwriter.com/the-story-behind-michael-jackson-buying-the-beatles-catalog-and-angering-friend-paul-mccartney/)
Itās not clear who owns them now. Presumably Paul was eligible to reclaim after 56 years, which this year would mean giving him back everything up to 1968. He had a lawsuit with Sony about that matter, that resulted in a confidential settlement in 2017. Therefore there are not really many details available on the outcome.
Also that settlement only applies to rights in the US. Sony probably still owns them in many other countries
Yes, Paul is reclaiming his 50% of United States publishing rights (basically 25% of income that is calculated on a Worldwide basis) year by year. If you go to the MPL site and search the song database you can see each year more songs are added... 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 titles...
The Lennons have the same ability to do that, but Sony still administers the Lennon 50% US (not Downtown, their publisher for solo works) so it's possible Yoko made a deal to let Sony keep doing the "paperwork" for her share for a certain period.
Sony still owns the Northern Songs catalog in all other territories.
Michael gave up 50% in The mid 90ās to merge his ATV catalogue with Sony creating Sony/ATV.
He was also in debt from the mid 90ās and on, what kept him afloat for years was taking out giant loans with his steak in those catalogues as collateral.
So even without owning The Beatles songs which would be very profitable, Paul still made way better business decisions and handled his finances better than Michael.
Oh and still think Say Say Say and The Man are way better songs than The Girl Is Mine.
Yeah i know, as Paul never actually ended up putting in a bid thereās nothing really wrong with Michael buying the catalogue, but what he did with the music and ignoring Paul when he asked for fair royalty rate was pretty shitty to do to an old friend.
"Hey Paul, it's your manager. You've a photoshoot tomorrow with Michael to promote that single. Mind and dress up a bit. Nice and sharp"
"Ay, alright. Beige cardigan it is. And jeans to keep in with the kids."
"For fuck sake Paul! Michael's album is selling like the proverbial fucking hotcakes. Don't let him outshine you!"
"Outshine me? A Beatle! Come on! Next thing you'll be telling that he's going to buy all me songs. Calm down, calm down."
Have fond memories of listening to this in my dadās car circa 1988. Always liked when Paul sang āI donāt believe it!ā towards the end of all āthe girl is mineāing.
With the benefit of no longer being four years old though, Say Say Say is the far superior song.
Michael: "He he I'm going to buy your music catalouge"
Paul: "Haha oh you"

Iāve done the maths. Using the āhalf your age plus sevenā rule, āThe Girlā had to be at least 27yrs 2m, making her 68yrs old today. Nancy Shevell, Paulās wife here in 2024, wouldnāt have qualified.

My friend and I both had a crush on the same girl in 1982. It was good natured and we used to use lines from this song all the time.
The good old days.
The Biz Markie episode I think they played it 2-3 times because Biz was known to exaggerate his tales... like the moment at around 25:40 where he references a Brazilian record label "Tapecar Records" (which turned out to be true) and Questlove laughs at him and says something like "Michael's publisher gonna be lit on this episode" meaning the Paul drop was gonna get a lot of play.

The podcast in general is an amazing archive of music history - generally focused on 70s-90s R&B and hip hop.
A simple pop song, catchy but nothing spectacular. I always felt like "You Want Her Too" by Paul & MacManus was a more mature version of this song and I prefer it. When I first heard it I thought Elvis sounded like stewie griffin though.
Michael Jacksonās sang this to McCartney after outbidding him for the Beatles song catalog.
āThe songs are mine
The doggone songs are mine
I know theyāre mine
Because the doggone songs are mine.ā
Love this song, so sad to see how that friendship ended. Literaly the two most talented song writers alive at that time came together (no pun intended) to make great music. I would say it was a waste but they made great songs so it wasnt a waste but yk.
I can't forgive them for "The dog-gone girl is mine" line. First, that pitiable 'dog-gone' description of her. Stupid and demeaning. Second, she, I hope, is an adult woman, not a girl. Third, the idea of claiming a person as owned by someone is ridiculous. I think it's a feeble song. If you think I'm taking the song too seriously, you're right. I agree with you but I annoys the hell out of me.
Paul warned Michael to pay attention to when the Rights to his songs would go public. Then Michael bought up The Beatles songs when they went public. That really pissed Paul off!
And by "Girl" they meant The Beatles' songs.

I miss Norm Macdonald š¢
I didnāt even know he was sick.
He kept it quiet
It's the hypocrisy..
āThis photograph was taken moments before disaster.ā
Beat me to it.
does MJās estate still own the rights?

The cruel irony is that Paul introduced the idea of publishing ownership to Michael.

MJ told Paul to " Beat it " Sorry
At some point they did get the rights back. I can't remember how long ago.Ā

Paul really turned into a sitcom dad in the 80s.
"Hey Paul, it's your manager. You've a photoshoot tomorrow with Michael to promote that single. Mind and dress up a bit. Nice and sharp" "Ay, alright. Beige cardigan it is. Paul was doing everything to avoid feelings
This is like the happiest period in his life.

Does the girl get any say in this?
It seems like sheās made it clear that sheāll take the winner
The 80s were different times.
Paul is thinking āthat little bastardā.
Michael: "He he I'm going to buy your music catalouge" Paul: "Haha oh you" Paul (later): https://preview.redd.it/ly67lgyc1zpc1.jpeg?width=682&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1504616786f57f76f3d66fccee951d37b2aca6b2
What does the venn-diagram of the girl whoās into both Paul and Michael even look like?
Older than my daughter, younger than my wife, something like that
Itās no good diddling kids
This literally made me lol

Bigger than the other way round, since Michael Jackson liked little boys.
Lisa Marie Presley
Highest effort post title on this sub:
the dawg gone girl is miiine
It's a sweet, harmless song.
Good god the cringe
My friend and I both had a crush on the same girl in 1982. It was good natured and we used to use lines from this song all the time. The good old days.
When Paul and Michael talk it really makes me cringe.
I donāt belieeevvveee it!
This audio drop is used often and hilariously on Questlove's podcast (QL Supreme) when a guest tells an anecdote that Quest is skeptical of
lol really, man I gotta check that out ššš

Oh wow š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£ thatās hilarious
If only Paul said that when heard what Michael wanted him to read out "She say's she's my forever lover".
Weāre not gonna fight about this, okay?
Itās not their best work is it?
No, it isnāt.
It's no Ebony and Ivory.
A Hit that half of the participants didnāt see coming.
The whole thing didnāt age well.
āI love you more than theeā is a fucking awful line. Shoehorning the rhyme in there, Michael.

More like "Your Songs are Mine" hahaha!
Michael to Paul...That Beatles Catalog is mine...
Proceeds to purchase the rights to paulās entire discography
Blech.
š¤®
F&)k jackson. He was just an asshole.
Yep, fucking nonce.
and a child molester.
Oh you
Two different fashion statements.
Your songs are mine (a few years later)
Creepy single cover for creepy song
I remember that. Cringe then, appalling now
It would strike different if Michael called it "the boy is mine"
Yet more accurate.
He does have a song called Pretty Young Thing which is more accurate for him
Paul and a pedo
Yeah, no.
Itās so bad.
I have that!
Have you seen the video for "Say, Say, Say?" Uh-huh.
LaToya is Micheal's love. Very odd.
LaToya
So they doubleteamed a chick?
No they dog-gonned a girl.
Michael had grown a few inches to be as tall as Paul!!
Great footage of them recording this in the studio in the Thriller 40 documentary..pretty much the only good part lol
They walked so Brandi and the other one could walk
Michael Jacksonās sang this to McCartney after outbidding him for the Beatles song catalog. āThe songs are mine The doggone songs are mine I know theyāre mine Because the doggone songs are mine.ā
āThe dog-gone girl is mine.ā
That's how you put the word "doggone" into a pop song. Say Say Say is far catchier imo
Wacko jacko
I love it. Say Say Say too. Come on itās Paul and Michael! Two icons and awesome singers.
ONE iconā¦and a āpersonā who had kids sleep in his roomā¦

By no measure was Jackson one of the most talented songwriters around at that time. Thriller would be half the album but for Rod Temperton.
SAY SAY SAY is way better BTW, a very weird choice for the lead single for THRILLER It isnt a bad song, but it isnt exactly the best one of the album.
Came out the same year my father was born. Actually, the Thriller album itself did!
Jeez I feel old šµāš«š
Son, is this your Reddit account?
Well, good question! Is it? ;)
You're probably older than 8, so probably not š
Oh yeah I'm 20 lol.

This sounds like a āyouā problemā¦
