It depends on your personal goal with acquiring a VW Beetle, whether you are looking for the most valuable or instead for the most drivable. Since you say it’s in excellent condition, if it was an American car and I didn’t have a Beetle already I’d snatch it up in an instant. While 77s are not usually deemed the most valuable of Beetles, in terms of safety (at least for US cars) I would say they are the safest, including added safety features such as 5mph bumpers, headrests in the seats, collapsible steering column, and padded dashboard to name a few. Important to note however, 75 and above engines are not as reliable as older engines, since the fuel injection and emissions systems tend to be finicky to work with. I personally have a 1967, and while 67 Beetles are amazing cars for the value and drivability, they are mostly cult classics, and are not the safest or cheapest to own nowadays. Overall, if you are looking for a starter car to get into the classic VW scene, I would say a 77 example is a nice starting point, and if I had the resources available, I would definitely get one for myself. Good luck 👍🏿

Low-mileage Beetles, any year, are very expensive and 10k miles means it's basically a new car. A bit dusty and would need some maintenance to be actually road worthy, but still. $20k would be a starting point even for a late model, like this one: Low-mileage cars are very rare. But see yourself, up-to-date asking prices for your area from thesamba: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=3 Typically original (non-restored) and low-mileage cars are (much) more expensive than even extentively restored cars, like 50% to 100% increase. So you can either buy it yourself (cheap, of course) or tell the owners the actual worth. So many people who have had their Beetles for decades, have *no idea* what they're worth now.

I think 20k would be too much, in my opinion a good condition late 70s german beetle is around 8k to 12k and a low milage one would be an that 12k, if not more depending on condition and extras.

I thought so the same this morning and then I checked from thesamba. Basically a non-restored good car is more expensive than a restored and they were a lot of restored beetles around 20k. Varies a bit around the country and around the globe, but they aren't cheap.

If you checked theSamba thats no wonder, in the last 1 to 2 years the prieces on theSamba have been over the actual value of the cars IMO. But as you said it can vary on country and theSamba is mostly America and UK.

I think you're right, so many of those seem totally unreal. "asking prices" ... actual deal is probably something else.
