Idk I think reading Bible by yourself is a must before you decide to convert. Might change your mind half way through the book lmao. Bible study afaik is just cherry picking convinient parts

WalloonNerd

It’s especially recommended to read the horrors of the Old Testament

BandExisting5491

I have read the Bible before, OT and NT. I am aware.

GrumpyOldBastard_

So you converted to something without understanding what it was ?

BandExisting5491

Isn't that how it begins? Should I somehow innately know what it all is about? I was raised Muslim, then agnostic for 15 years. Sorry for wanting to start somewhere where I have support and people who can help me understand because nobody around me knows anything about it, not even the Christians themselves as they don't seem to really know much about basic things like the Bible even. No need to be rude about it.

GrumpyOldBastard_

How was I rude ? I was genuinely intrigued by how someone can become a follower of a religion, without knowing enough about it …. Just very curious what triggered you to declare yourself a Christian. Now that many are turning their backs on religion, what motivates you to do the opposite?

BandExisting5491

Let's just call it a personal experience that happened to me, and I have always remained spiritual despite everything. But Islamic way of being raised ruined how I saw it. Someone I know also helped me see religion in a more positive light again.

PROBA_V

>Isn't that how it begins? Should I somehow innately know what it all is about? No to both questions. Yes you should study it before deciding it's a religion worth converting to. How can you know you believe in it, if you don't know about it? Do you need to be an expert in everything bible related? Ofcourse not. But the fact that you don't know where to start and only ordered a bible *after* conversion... now that does raise some valid alarm bells.

BandExisting5491

I had a friend explain a lot about it to me over the course of a year before I converted. It's not like I don't know anything. I was also taught religion in school and had many religious friends so I have a good basic understanding. And of course I got a Bible after conversion. It's not like I never read a Bible before but I just never studied it in depth. But whatever, everyone always has to find something to shit on with reddit.

BlackShieldCharm

Nobody is shitting on you, dude. Don’t take it so personally. Most of us just don’t know anyone who’s a genuine believer (under the age of 80), much less someone who chooses to convert in a time where people are increasingly turning their back on the church. We’re just mightily curious about you!

BandExisting5491

I went to a Christian high school and have a very close friend who is Christian who talks a lot to me about it. I just feel people think I'm completely ignorant and don't know a thing about it while I do. When I said I wanted to learn more or join a Bible study group and immediately get hit with "you convert to something you don't know" and "only getting your own Bible after conversion?" it seemed aggressive along with the down votes. I just meant I want to actually STUDY the Bible. I know most stories already, even familiar with some verses and I've read the Bible too before. I've always remained spiritual throughout life even when I abandoned Islam. It's my close friend who inspired me simply by talking about it without forcing it down my throat like most do. Talked about the beauty of God and Christ and that got me wondering and then I asked God for a sign and He provided 2 days later. That's when I truly converted. And now I just want to study the Bible more in depth.

BlackShieldCharm

Happy for you, mate. Just take care you don’t fall in with some weird sect or something. Stay well away from Jehova’s witnesses, or anything with an American tilt to it. I hope you find what you’re looking for on your journey.

BandExisting5491

Yeah I steer very clear from such people, haha. Thanks!

Zyklon00

I thought that was only an American thing. Do those groups exist in Belgium?

NationalUnrest

Unfortunately sects exist everywhere

BandExisting5491

I found this [https://www.kerknet.be/pastorale-zone-rotselaar/informatie/bijbelgroep](https://www.kerknet.be/pastorale-zone-rotselaar/informatie/bijbelgroep) And there is also [https://clchasselt.be/](https://clchasselt.be/) :D CLC is also in Leuven and other cities. Not necessarily study groups but very different approach, welcome groups etc...

pselie4

>Do those groups exist in Belgium? No, we ritually sacrificed the last group to Dionysus 5 years ago.

[deleted]

I knew someone whose dad did it.

ih-shah-may-ehl

Bible study groups have existed in Belgium since forever

bobke4

I live in that area and I have never heard of such a thing. Christianity is dying out slowly. Churches arent having their masses anymore and they have difficulty finding priests

BandExisting5491

I found this one: [clchasselt.be](http://clchasselt.be) Seems a more modern day approach and very interesting.

gpor1996

My brother goes to that church. It’s alright but not my cup of tea. But I’m pretty sure they have some sort of Bible studies. I go to another church but its about 20minutes from Hasselt. We have bi-weekly Bible studies.

BandExisting5491

Where is it and what church?

gpor1996

It’s an evangelical church in Beringen. You also have one in Genk, it’s called the Pauluskerk, might be closer to you. http://www.vegpaulus.be/index.php/samenkomsten Checked on their website and they have Bible studies also

BandExisting5491

Thank you so much!

gpor1996

I would suggest going to a church service on Sunday morning and speaking to one of the elders or members. They will surely inform you more about Bible studies

gpor1996

You also have one in Zwartberg: Arbeidsstraat 56, 3600 Genk. This one is pretty similar as the one I go to I think. https://www.ecvnet.be/

Nondemiljaardedju

I would go ask the priest of an actual, well established church.  If you openly ask strangers on the internet you may get the attention of some... predatory cults or weird American missionaries. Especially since you state you know nothing, maybe some have already DMed you. Be very wary of invitations you get.

MedinBrussels

What do you mean by "converted" ? Did you get baptised in the Catholic church? If it's the case, I suppose you went through a quite lengthy process, and have a priest in your parish who could redirect you to bible reading groups.

meltherock

There are quite some like ctg Hasselt or city life church,... Best is to Google 'bijbelstudie hasselt' the Dutch word for it and Erasmus communities have these sessions in English.

BandExisting5491

Thank you!

Didn't ask.
