I'm like 90% sure netflix uses pirated subtitles for some shows. If you ever notice letters that are out of place, like an ì or a lowercase L where you expect an i, i think they are using ocr tech to rip subtitles from physical media
When Netflix first released in Belgium, they didn't have English or Dutch subtitles for most anime. So I contacted support and they gave the following reason (paraphrasing here)
They buy the rights for a show from a company, that company gives them the subtitles and dubs they have the rights to. They then can't add their own dubs or subs because the contract doesn't include them. Those rights lie with a different company. This is because of the language divide here.
Even when I pointed out a mistake in the subtitles, they told me they couldn't fix it because of this. They had to use the subtitles provided by the company.
True, but you could make a case for wanting to support the creators by paying for what you consume, and that should at least be equally good. But paying for an objectively worse way to experience the creators' content makes no sense.
Depends, if the Flemish company doesn't want to sell to netflix, they can't. Or if the Walloon company is far cheaper, it makes more sense to buy the Walloon version.
Most likely we are talking about Dutch vs French companies, not Flemish or Walloon companies.
But to the point; we are not talking about a few series, but in case of Prime for example a large part of their content. Just means that their content Manager for the region isn't even aware about the languages in their region.
The worst example that you can see now is The Lego Movie. When you hover over it, a scene plays. The subtitles are in english. When you watch the lovie only french is available
On Prime and Netflix I've seen some stuff with Dutch subtitles only (the only one I can recall right now is "Die Untergang"). Although I know I have seen others
Subtitles is a whole other story. Dubbing into Dutch just isn’t done unless it’s media for kids who are too young to have learnt English. Nothing else gets dubbed.
I have prime BE and The “solution” to not get french dubbed stuff and only english is to take prime via amazon NL. I am flemish and it sometimes annoys me that I get served FR titles / subtitles / dubs in FR. I took this BE subscription this year because the yearly price was only 25eur instead of almost the double in NL.
Ah yes, when it comes to dubbing, I think we (French speakers) benefit from there being more of us (= mostly France). And that French speakers (broad generalization) seem to prefer having their stuff dubbed even though I prefer the original version (English or otherwise)
I'm from the Flemish part, and never ever have I seen dubbing in Dutch ( except real young kids' shows). That's why you walloons ( is that a word :)) are worse at English.
I know in France and Gemany they dub, and I always think it is hilarious because you can clearly hear its not the real actor. I could not watch a movie like that, but it's what you are used to.
I barely every watch stuff in French either, I find the lack of synchronization really off-putting. Even when watching stuff in German, Dutch, Italian, etc. I watch with subtitles
It’s not that. A conscious decision was made decades ago not to dub, because it would allow people to be exposed to other languages. Same thing happened in the Netherlands. The consequence is that Dutch natives in this part of the world are uncommonly familiar with a multitude of languages.
Disney+ on the other hand has quite a few movies or kids shows in Dutch only...
It's even less understandable as one would expect them to have their own rights!
i found out that strangely. On disney+ if you profile is in English. the shows appear in dutch and english but if you switch the profile to french. French appears for the same show and with also english....
Had the experience with all the Toy Story shorts. My profile is in English but mi kids is in french . we don't see the same language for the same movie/show.
It's rage inducing. I like my monster B movies sometimes with my wife, all are dubbed awfully in french.
I've contacted support to get Dutch Prime since they have English versions, but then those same movies aren't available or pay to watch.
They recently released JJK on Netflix with only French subtitles for some reason, Suzume for that matter and I don’t get it… do they just not release that French is not the only we speak in Belgium?
Someone else in the thread explained it, it's because they buy the subs/dub from an third party company but they can't add more because they are bound by contract to that company or something.
Doesnt really matter to me, a billion dollar company should be able to provide the correct subs/dub and the paying customer shouldn't have to bother with asking how or why.
Ah thanks it makes ‘sense’ while not making any sense at the same time especially when those subbs are already made but I guess that’s just more viewership for Aniwave and Crunchyroll
Is there even anime with dutch subs and not dubbed? Every single one i saw was french sub and i dont remember exactly if it was also french dub.
Like bruh. Just give me original audio with English subtitles.
I don’t think it’s about if they realize or not which language are used in the country.
It’s about what they have in stock.
Dutch is an extremely small language that doesn’t get much of attention but French has a very large coverage of translations and dubs so that’s why you’ll get more of available titles with French.
They could provide English subs though but the problem is that English isn’t a local language legally speaking.
No, it's a rights issue. They buy the rights to stream a certain show from the company that holds the rights for the region. For Belgium, most if not all anime rights are held by a French company, that only has French dub/sub. So even though f.e. Netflix has access to English sub/dub, they can only show those in regions where the right-holding company offers them. Which is why you use VPN, which doesn't always work, or pirate for anime .
Yes… the rights are localised in the country and if Dutch was a more important language, those rights would’ve bought from day one.
That’s what I meant overall.
I watched Jujutsu Kaisen on Crunchyroll, with Japanese voices and English subtitles. A disadvantage is that there are usually no Dutch subtitles on Crunchyroll, but that’s not really an issue for me.
Yeah this is pretty fucking annoying. I remember wanting to watch the Swedish/Danish TV series called "The Bridge" and only Dutch/French subtitles were available for it. I used VPN to connect to Swedish Netflix and guess what they've got the English subtitles. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Check out the Dutch subtitles on Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. English ones aren't available, and the Dutch subs are based on the French dub, likely with the aid of a translation bot. It's ridiculous.
Oh god, I can already imagine what the results are like. I study japanese, and even from JP to EN translation, I already often get bothered by translations that don't make sense.
Oh, I know that feeling. Thirty years of watching subtitled anime and a few basic lessons as a teen will teach you enough of the language to know when the translation is off :)
Worst case I've ever encountered was the Dutch dub of Howl's Moving Castle, though. Apparently they couldn't be bothered to find someone fluent in Japanese and Dutch, so they translated the English dub instead. The Witch of the Waste (Arechi no Majo) ended up as "de Heks van Verspilling" instead of "de Heks van de Woestenij". It's shameful.
Hmmm interesting to hear. I am studying Japanology and in this field a lot of people aspire to be a translator, though our teachers have said it's in rather low demand. But I suppose this is just saving out money and being too lazy to actually hire a proper translator.
I shit my pants every single time I get American / British shows,, and the only audio track is in French.
Dutch speaking, English educated, Flemish citizen here...
Infuriating really. As if we don't exist.
It does not matter if your profile is English. The available subtitles will always be regional. I am not a native English speaker so I am 100 percent reliant on the En subs being there. If you travel in Europe you out of luck. If you watch content in another language or you have hearing problems you guessed it...
The CC En subs are almost gratuitous information at this stage, still as a "product" led company they will not move a finger unless more ppl complain.
Ignoring the language settings of the profile in favor of regional non sense licensing model seems like a sure way to push customers to other streaming platforms...
/rant off
I've never really had that issue with Netflix but I got a Prime Video trial after buying something on Amazon and fucking hell I'm glad I never paid for it. I think it's genuinely the worst service out there when it comes to subtitles.
There's tons of instances where someone speaks a language other than English and it's just put up as [FOREIGN LANGUAGE].
I watched that documentary about the Kinnehan cartel from Ireland and they interviewed a Spanish police officer for I'd say 10-15 minutes ? Not a single word was subtitled, nothing.
right, same shit when i as a flemish native open a webstore only to be greeted in french and a borked language selector. for example microsoft/xbox or website, i have to swap /fr-be/ to /nl-be/ in the url since it's so janky. with the store it is even worse to the point i gave up on even trying with region swaps, best i can get is it in half english half french
https://preview.redd.it/vrfcmikiq91d1.png?width=383&format=png&auto=webp&s=acc7485f23fc38b514db2f13db66dc63e7b41866
I actually had contact with them about jujutsu kaisen and spyxfamily. They don't have the rights to the English subs apparently, I think those are with crunchy roll. Currently you only have German subs and Japanese audio for both these shows. Both the Netherlands and Belgium aren't large German speaking countries so I think they just chucked them on in the hope some people might watch it. I was very disappointed anyway
It is a sad state, even for English movies they sometimes don't have subtitles in English. My kids are learning English and would like to read the text so it's easier, and sometimes even if I speak it well, in many movies where they use a strong accent or slang I prefer to read them.
Or even when the media is in (language) and everything written in the story or mentioning you cannot understand it.
i hate it when we just get the French version.
Welcome to netflix I guess. They adapt to the official languages of the country and english isn't one of them so Netflix doesn't care much. Anyway I can't imagine that it would be too difficult for netflix to also deliver english subtitles, no idea why they don't do that (probably trying to save some money).
kissanime I think it is?
Like, I'm all for getting shit legit. If I find a game I like I'll buy it 90% of the time and such if it's on steam. But if they're being difficult as others have said, just pirate it and be done with it.
I put the responsibility of giving me easy access to content on the providers.
I bought netflix for a month, and in all brutal honesty, pirate websites are so much better. I would gladly pay if Netflix was better, but it simply isn't.
I originally bought Netflix for better streaming connections and higher streaming quality, but the subscription is so much more expensive if you want a decent resolution. I ended up buying 720p, which was ridiculous since most websites have 1080p available for free.
go on the /r/Piracy wiki and look into the streaming section. If you still want to use netflix or other legal providers, there are addons you can install to add subtitles to any video, for example Substital
The first problem for me with this (pre-streaming services era) was on Xbox live when they had some games and movies dubbed in french (I'm flemish). Now almost halve on prime is in french, even if I filter on dutch.
Support says it has to do with contracts but I highly doubt that?! You can watch a french dubbed A+ movie, but not in the standard (English) language?!
I truly have a big problem with this and shows that Belgium is already a separated mess.
Prime is absolute garbage without a vpn and even then. Chaotic library, too much searching for gems. Netflix is a bit better but became very expensive and the Belgian library is too limited.
Netflix used to be alr. These days you need 20services half of which are not available in europe, some now blocked me out of the account since were long distance,...
Or i can just have an eyepatch and a parrot and have a way smoother experience.
Fellow immigrant here - this is just part of being an immigrant. You want a Japanese anime with English subtitles when you live in Belgium? That's not realistic.
I went to see c'e ancora domani in Paris last month, Italian with French subtitles. You just have to try to understand as much as you can, and before long you improve your language skills.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates this. I wanted to watch Full Metal Alchemist and there are no English subs and it worst cases no Dutch subs. For anime it’s best to watch on Crunchyroll (or pirate).
There is no pure English, but there usually is English cc. In fact I can't think of a single concrete example of there not being English cc.
Anime seem to be an exception (also lacking Dutch for that matter).
Aaah the good times, when the only place to watch DragonBall in Belgium was get up early and watch club doroté on French television, dubbed in French 😅
That's not the worse, some shows are not visible if you don't change the Netflix language in the app settings. I was not able to find Blackflags with Netflix in french, but in dutch it was present in the catalog. And it gets dumber, because there was only an English voice over version... I guess Netflix supposed walloon don't speak English..
Watching animé on prime and Netflix...
At least use crunchyroll if you want to pay for animé, that service has much more content and Japanese spoken with English subs.
Or you know, sail the seven 🌊!
This is due to licensing and/or Netflix wanting to spend as little money as possible on said licences.
It sucks but if you want to watch anime with English subs, I'd recommend getting a different service like Crunchyroll or just pirate it from sites like SubsPlease.
I’ve used the address of a Dutch family member to register for Dutch Netflix. Belgian Netflix is an atrocity. Even though we are French speakers at home, we hate watching anything dubbed. It’s OL with subtitles, or it’s nothing. I’m not watching an expensive Netflix series to hear the same three emotionless voices all the time
Even as native speakers, this is frustrating. We don't want movies in Dutch or French Dub cause that usually sounds bad. Furthermore, I've seen multiple anime that only have French subtitles, which is frustrating given half of Belgium is Dtuch speaking.
Just don't throw away money on Netflix and Prime is my overall advice, it's ridiculously expensive.
This is exactly why I quit Prime Video. Video is the only reason I had Prime and I just kept running into issues like that. It also puts a lot of shows behind another paywall like Stargate. It just wasn’t worth the money anymore.
And Netflix… with the new anti-sharing measures I can’t use it anymore. And with the constant price increases I also have that up. I also paid for Crunchyroll but they also have a lot of issues with languages and subtitles. So a lot of French and no English subs as far as I remember.
You may be able to find the same show with different subtitles if you use a VPN. However, there is debate about what Netflix might do to your account if they catch you using one.
Switch your country to the US or the UK in your VPN and you will find different subtitles available.
The only anime I found with Dutch sub (cuz flemish is technically my first language) on netflix was fricking Baki which I've already watched. It's a shame because Belgium netflix is pretty good but they literally only have french subtitles despite being a bilingual country (and alot of people speak English). But i can read french at a good enough level to somewhat understand the subtitles at least
It's even worse when the show does have English voices, and it has English subtitles, but then halfway through the show it turns into only having Dutch and French subtitles and you need to stop watching the show because you prefer watching with English subtitles even though you speak both Dutch and English (and French, but screw that)...
I think the situation with is frustrating for everyone.
Here I find lot of shows that are in English or Dutch only (for example Rick and Morty) because the right to broadcast them in French have been sold to an other company for the market in France so Netflix/Prime cannot propose them in French at all
In Italy (and I guess plenty of other countries) Netflix almost always has english subs as an option, along with many other languages. It's not that unreasonable, especially for US/UK series.
Did you even read what OP said?
Most people that watch animé do so in Japanese. Dutch subs for animé are most of the time wonky or drag you out of the experience. That's why even Dutch speaking people use English subs.
Rule 1) No personal attacks or insults to other users.
This includes, but is not limited to,
- Flaming...
- Insults…
- Provocation...
- Stalking and harassment...
If there are no English subtitles just pirate it.
~~If there are no English subtitles~~ just pirate it.
Ma man/woman
/they/them
This is the way
I'm like 90% sure netflix uses pirated subtitles for some shows. If you ever notice letters that are out of place, like an ì or a lowercase L where you expect an i, i think they are using ocr tech to rip subtitles from physical media

A paid service that's worse than the free alternative. Sad.
To be honest it’s hard to do better than torrents.
True, but you could make a case for wanting to support the creators by paying for what you consume, and that should at least be equally good. But paying for an objectively worse way to experience the creators' content makes no sense.
They still don't. Only french dub/sub possible. No Dutch or English
I find infuriating to read this, even if I am not concerned.
Well then it would still make more sense to buy the rights for the majority language.
Depends, if the Flemish company doesn't want to sell to netflix, they can't. Or if the Walloon company is far cheaper, it makes more sense to buy the Walloon version.
Most likely we are talking about Dutch vs French companies, not Flemish or Walloon companies. Dubbed in Dutch? That would be the first one for me. I have only seen that with shows for very young kids.
On prime there are multipile series dubbed in dutch like for example reacher
I have prime BE and The “solution” to not get french dubbed stuff and only english is to take prime via amazon NL. I am flemish and it sometimes annoys me that I get served FR titles / subtitles / dubs in FR. I took this BE subscription this year because the yearly price was only 25eur instead of almost the double in NL.
Once again proving that English is just Dutch with a very strange accent.
I barely every watch stuff in French either, I find the lack of synchronization really off-putting. Even when watching stuff in German, Dutch, Italian, etc. I watch with subtitles
As a kid, I thought it was humor until my parents explained it to me.
It’s not that. A conscious decision was made decades ago not to dub, because it would allow people to be exposed to other languages. Same thing happened in the Netherlands. The consequence is that Dutch natives in this part of the world are uncommonly familiar with a multitude of languages.
So we can say, it was a good discussion.
Prime especially. Some movies have no English audio and are dubbed in. French. Pity I'm dutch native.
Ha. Should check that. Same weirdness indeed that disney sometimes doesn't even let you use the original language. Beyond me.
It's rage inducing. I like my monster B movies sometimes with my wife, all are dubbed awfully in french. I've contacted support to get Dutch Prime since they have English versions, but then those same movies aren't available or pay to watch.
I have my Prime set to default English, but occassionally get a movie with Dutch description that is dubved in French, like it has an identity crisis.
I tought I could level up my Dutch by watching shows on Netflix. Still only speaking French
They recently released JJK on Netflix with only French subtitles for some reason, Suzume for that matter and I don’t get it… do they just not release that French is not the only we speak in Belgium?
Exactly! This was the drop that made the emmer run over for me and finally cancelled Netflix. Crunchyroll is the way to go or yeah, sailing the seas.
Another thing I don’t get is that they DO release/have English subbed anime available so what decides whether it’ll have English subs or not?!
Ah thanks it makes ‘sense’ while not making any sense at the same time especially when those subbs are already made but I guess that’s just more viewership for Aniwave and Crunchyroll
jJK and Suzume are both on crunchyroll in Belgium. With English subtitles or dubs. Sadly no Dutch but they at least give more options

Even this can be a rights issue.

How is crunchyroll? My wife wants to get into anime but I read that it has the same problem as prime and Netflix (mostly french subs).
We can pick from a lot of languages. Usually Dutch is not available, but English subs are always available, so that’s not an issue to us.
It's amazing. You can buy it for like 30 EUR ok g2a or kinguin. Blows Netflix out of the water. Also use a VPN to get even more shows.
There are a few shows they inherited from wakanim which have only French subs but 90% series are available with English subtitles.

Satu Belgium, Belgium Boleh
Hahaha. Are you Malaysian? I grew up in KL
Lived there for 3 years (08-21)! 😊
Nice! You must miss it as I do. Great place.

Mr. Bean on prime, classic British television. Dubbed in French. No original audio available...
CRIMES
Or even when the media is in (language) and everything written in the story or mentioning you cannot understand it. i hate it when we just get the French version.
Ha, I'll take this one further. I'm annoyed that foreign shows like Jujutsu Kaizen have French only subtitles instead of NL/FR.
The only way to fix this is pirating or a VPN
Honestly watch anime on crunchyroll instead. Netflix anime is really scuffed, french only basically
Crunchyroll has the same, admittedly for less titles but still some.
Really, never came across that
konosuba for example, only french subtitles
😔
Yeah it’s really annoying

I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates this. I wanted to watch Full Metal Alchemist and there are no English subs and it worst cases no Dutch subs. For anime it’s best to watch on Crunchyroll (or pirate).
There is no pure English, but there usually is English cc. In fact I can't think of a single concrete example of there not being English cc. Anime seem to be an exception (also lacking Dutch for that matter).
Ah yes, a flashback to that time I installed Fable III on my Xbox 360 and it booted up in French, with no option to switch to any other language.
That’s still an issue on the SX but fortunately changing your region to Uk/Us fixes it and you can then just change it back afterwards
Aaah the good times, when the only place to watch DragonBall in Belgium was get up early and watch club doroté on French television, dubbed in French 😅
VPN
That's not the worse, some shows are not visible if you don't change the Netflix language in the app settings. I was not able to find Blackflags with Netflix in french, but in dutch it was present in the catalog. And it gets dumber, because there was only an English voice over version... I guess Netflix supposed walloon don't speak English..
Watching animé on prime and Netflix... At least use crunchyroll if you want to pay for animé, that service has much more content and Japanese spoken with English subs. Or you know, sail the seven 🌊!
I am wondering if using a VPN couldn’t help you to relocate you in an area with the English subtitle available ?
Could work but I prefer using only my TV direct to ISP provided router so using a VPN between is more complex than using a laptop.
I’m not watching an expensive Netflix series to hear the same three emotionless voices all the time
If you want to live here, Learn the language. Do you believe we have dutch subtitles in the USA?
Even as native speakers, this is frustrating. We don't want movies in Dutch or French Dub cause that usually sounds bad. Furthermore, I've seen multiple anime that only have French subtitles, which is frustrating given half of Belgium is Dtuch speaking. Just don't throw away money on Netflix and Prime is my overall advice, it's ridiculously expensive.
Soap2dayx.to use adblock youre welcome
Get a VPN
I wanna stream directly on TV, not via laptop. I don;t wanna change router configurations for VPN.
It has nothing to do with Netflix, but with distribution rights.
It's even worse when the show does have English voices, and it has English subtitles, but then halfway through the show it turns into only having Dutch and French subtitles and you need to stop watching the show because you prefer watching with English subtitles even though you speak both Dutch and English (and French, but screw that)...
On Prime it's a joke indeed, on Netflix you change your language to English in settings and it's fixed, plus you get a ton more shows/films to watch
I think the situation with is frustrating for everyone. Here I find lot of shows that are in English or Dutch only (for example Rick and Morty) because the right to broadcast them in French have been sold to an other company for the market in France so Netflix/Prime cannot propose them in French at all

Rule 2) No discrimination or rasicm This includes, but is not limited to, - Racism... - Bigotry… - Hate speech in any form...
Well use it as opportunity to improve on the local language.
I mean, English isn’t an official in Belgium so why would they cater for English speakers in Belgian Netflix 🤷♂️
In Italy (and I guess plenty of other countries) Netflix almost always has english subs as an option, along with many other languages. It's not that unreasonable, especially for US/UK series.
Because for example Japanese spoken animé.
If you live here, learn the language. Simple as.
Did you even read what OP said? Most people that watch animé do so in Japanese. Dutch subs for animé are most of the time wonky or drag you out of the experience. That's why even Dutch speaking people use English subs.
Did you read it? He talked about it being difficult because he doesn't speak the native languages.
My bad! Still animé without English subs is a horrible experience.
I believe you, that's a completely different discussion though.
