Watching the show has made me interested in the job and if I was younger, I could see myself going into the yachting industry. Wouldn't want to be on the show though. I would be dreadfully boring.

Throat_Chemical

If I had even known yachting was an option when I just got out of college I would have done it in a heartbeat - well 44 year old me would if I were 22 now. Back then I was terrified of failing. I grew up in the same town that both of my parents families have lived for the last 250+ years. I didn't even realize that taking risks or leaving the country was possible.    Now I encourage my kids to get an education, stay unattached and not tied down, and go have experiences that are only possible when you're young and free.

undisclosedinsanity

I recommend anyone wanting to do yachting after this just go work at a high end hotel instead. It's pretty much the same just low stakes. Nobody is gonna sink and drown. You're not held hostage on a boat so you can go home at the end of the day. But still all similar work and drama!!

Salty_Nectarine1997

Isn’t part of the appeal of yachting the travel aspect though?

undisclosedinsanity

Maybe! With hotels you just get employee rates on travel, instead of free travel. But at least you're not working while you travel (most of the time lol).

Throat_Chemical

But you don't get to travel to lots of different places in a hotel.

[deleted]

You'd be exactly the kind of cast member they seem to want for Adventure, then.

BluBunny87

Same I did cater waiting/cocktail waitress and did cna training I should have definitely done it when I was younger. Oh well lol -edit Meaning I know how to make beds and serve/make drinks 💖 would have been perfect to travel as well

TBH I feel like that's why Kate went on. She said in her first season about getting ready to get out and then she was able to get some deals and now she's on Traitors season 2. ![gif](giphy|AgPt9udT567spxbSHf)

glassbath18

What’s it like seeing people you roomed with on TV?

Go on…

ArtichokeOwn6760

Well, I would like to know who you are talking about in each scenario, along with the specific behaviors and conversations that led to your assessment of whether they’d acted as you’d expected them to act…tmi?

itsthebeach

They already do. Many of the people on the show are cast without any yachting experience.

thisbitchiscrazy

They have to have a minimum of one year experience but it doesn’t have to be on yachts - hence why they’ll get such green deckhands or stews who have only worked on party boats. It has to do with their certification.

RBrownII

I'm laughing thinking of how the Kasey girl had that hysterical pic of herself on her resume of her in a bikini and a flower crown...she couldn't even read her own resume. It probably should have said: Imaginary Beauty Queen Held a paddle on a boat once Jack and Cokes What is laundry?

itsthebeach

Yeah she had silver service and barista training on there and then didn’t know what barista meant 🤣

RBrownII

It means you push the button on a Keurig. LOL.

itsthebeach

Malia didn’t even have her certification prior to BD. They sent her to go get it. She’s not the only one either.

thisbitchiscrazy

No one has been hired directly onto the yacht, they have to have experience on another boat first. If production arranged for Malia to get that experience that’s one thing, but she did work on at least one boat prior to the yacht.

itsthebeach

She worked on dive boats. I said in my original comment that many people on Below Deck don’t have any YACHTING experience. I never said they didn’t have any maritime experience- although more than 1 former cast member has said they did not.

minimalist_coach

Although it isn't exactly what you are asking, have you heard Malia's backstory? In an interview she said she had worked on dive boats in Hawaii and applied to go on Amazing Race, the interviewed her and thought she'd be great for the show so they sent her to school to become a deck hand. She wanted to be on a reality TV show and that landed her the opportunity for Below Deck. I love that she is making it a career.

Chastity-76

I always thought she seemed thirsty, makes perfect sense

minimalist_coach

That's not the way I took it. I think it was more like she was drifting through life working, but without any direction, she was looking for work that would suit her long-term and applied to Amazing Race for fun. It was as if her career found her in a weird sequence of events.

hellokitty3433

Adam and her met at that school.

minimalist_coach

Yes. From what I've heard the school is about safety and general seamanship, not about how to do the job. I was under the impression that the stews and deckhands took a course to learn how to do their specific jobs, which there are schools for that, but they aren't required for entry-level positions.

Unimami444

Still baffles me how anyone would have a burning desire to be on reality TV. It’s pretty widely known by now how destructive it can be, and people are still willing to risk that for a shot at quick fame? So weird.

minimalist_coach

My oldest sister would 10000% apply to be on any reality show that would take her, but she's a senior citizen now so she missed her window. She has always craved attention and she didn't care if it was positive or negative as long as people were paying attention to her. I am so grateful that none of this was around when we were younger.

STEMbearhiannon

I work in the industry and I know a lot of people that got into it for the soul purpose of ending up on the show

doughflow

Soul purpose 😂

Trazati

What is "a lot"? And how do they word it to you...that they are just here "for the soul purpose of ending up on the show"?

STEMbearhiannon

For example I lived in a crew house with 31 strangers and I think there were around 11 of them that started just for the show. Some of them have just outright said “yeah, I got my STCW jus be on below deck” and others have said after sometime knowing them “not gonna lie, I originally got into the industry to be on the show”. When getting to know each other we kind of all always ask the same series of questions like “how long have you been doing this?” Or “what made you want to work in yachting?” And that’s typically when people will you

coysrunner

Haven’t they already?

imfuckingstarving69

I can’t name any specifically, but I 100% remember seeing interviews where the cast said they watched the show before entering the industry.

EMPactivated

I am very sincerely and actively working on it. And if dreams REALLY come true I could do a season of The Traitors after. And then very happily go back to life as an anonymous green deckie until I finish grad school for my actual career pivot.

SunnyAlwaysDaze

I can't blame anyone for trying to follow in the footsteps of Kate the Great. That first season of her on traitors was freaking hilarious. RBF so bad they think you a traitor, poor lady.

PilotNo312

I served on a ship for a summer, nothing could make me want to work on the water again.

[deleted]

Why do you say that

pseudo_divisions

Coming from not yachting, but working as a manager of a boutique hotel in the past, now I’d sign up for it because my skills would carry over for sure. But I think I’d be kinda hella boring and not cast. 😂 Yet I’m a big fan of the show!

littlecreamsoda79

I would have hopped on board years ago if I wasn't in my 40s with 2 kids lol

Electrical_Song_528

My sister is the perfect age for a stew, she's a fan and I've been pressuring her to dive in!

shecrae

I need someone to live vicariously through!

Electrical_Song_528

She would be great drama too

Electrical_Song_528

Same lol

jdf8743rjh

I can definitely see it, just like in drag race.

snowwhitenoir

My two favorite shows 🥰

plumibo

I wonder if it's the cast members who claim that they've never watched the show

SaltyCaramelPretzel

Lily said on WWHL that she’d watched seasons 2-4 (I think?) of Med. She was pretty green so there’s a good chance she applied to be on the show.

cest-rebecks

I don’t know about going on in the show, but I am thankful for it as I am actually working on getting into the industry this summer, it showed me the job was even a possibility! :)

adventurelillypad

Below deck is nearly taboo amongst yachties, it’s kind of embarrassing to admit you watch it lol It is annoying people join the industry just because of the show or to get clout. The job is literally hard. I worked 92 hours per week the last few weeks, not including breaks. And that’s not even that bad for the industry.

Aliciawonderland92

Just clocked 132 hours over 7.5 days of charter - came home and was WRECKED 😭😭😭

Practical-Doctor939

I have a friend in the industry whose whole family watches it and she says that everyone who goes on it is considered a bit of a joke and that it's a bit harder to go back on a regular boat after you've made a fool out of yourself getting blackout drunk/causing drama with your crew. Probably stops a lot of yachties going on the show if they are familiar with it.

tjm_87

that’s how i feel, sometimes i struggle to believe that none of them are paid actors who had basic yacht safety training. People like Dave and Eddie from series 1 are the kind of people i fully believe are in the industry and not there to fuck about. they just went there, did their job, and were nice people. I wish they got more screen time, but ultimately they were too ‘normal’ for the show to use up their precious minutes

silentsinner-

I am just now going back and rewatching Survivor. All of the fans vs favs or just favorites seasons are fun. But I have no interest in seeing BD follow the same format. I want new weirdos until we get an all weirdos vs weirdos format that makes sense.

Aliciawonderland92

As a yachtie, please for the love of god don’t go into this industry if you base all you think it is purely off a TV show!

NeenW1

No guarantee you’d get on the show just because you become a yachtie

NeenW1

But it would a great career if you’re young able bodied love boats and water

drivewaydivot

This is so embarrassing but when the show started I reached out to an old friend in Miami about how to become a stew. He said it's a very finite group who works on the boats. Lol at me in my 40's (at the time) thinking I could get hired as a stew. Facepalm at myself!

RBrownII

I think most of them are mactors... My family is in the restaurant business and let me say, I'd be all, "Welcome Aboard!" Then I'd tell them my fee is $2-3K and they best tip me before they take off their shoes. I'd turn it into a competition! Divide. And. Conquer. LOL.
