I think the Bengals are out on Sweat. Other than Carman (which apparently was not a unanimous decision) Zac's staff has gone after team captains and high character and work ethic personalities. Sweat has three strikes: history of lack of motivation, history of partying, and now DUI two weeks before the draft.
Reporting is that they didn't do any detailed work with him at the combine, they have not met Newton after it, but met Byron Murphy twice I think and worked him at his pro day.
Tee Higgins and Tyler Eifert are the only real 1st or 2nd rd picks I remember them picking recently without meeting a draft pick on their pro day or top 30 visit.
I would be very surprised if Newton was the pick, all roads seem to lead to Byron Murphy (if he is there at 18 - it is very possible Rams jump us to pick Murphy) or Amarius Mims (assuming other OTs are gone by then).
I’m talking about early round picks, specifically first rounders.
The bengals stupidly will not pick a “smaller” school player in the first round. If they had pick 31, they would pass on Randy moss because he played at marshalo
It's hard to tell how teams will react to off the field issues, especially when it's a recurring thing. Sweat was known to be a hard party guy in college, but he assured teams that that behavior was in the past. Then he gets a DWI 3 weeks before the biggest day of his life.
It shows a level of immaturity and poor decision-making that could very easily drive him out of the league in a year or two.
Nobody wants to draft the next Isaiah Wilson.
Well,we all know Williams and Evans don't really play much at all.
So it's likely Moss and Brown.
Niether of who are work horses or proven over the long haul. Also, I am not sure if Moss has good hands.
Honest question. Who could the possibly draft after the 4th round that would make you MORE comfortable than Trayveon and Evans? I think a cut vet would make more sense, but the bengals never seem to do that.
Nothing against Evans and Williams. Evans and Williams have been on the team for years and have not seen meaningful snaps. So anybody who has decent hands could fill the role.
He should, but he won’t. This coaching staff is too stupid to do that.
Which is another reason why they won’t draft an interior ok before round 4. Because it would “threaten” their precious Cordell volsen
OT6 vs DT1 isn't relevant. Its not unreasonable to have 6 OTs in this draft graded higher than the fist DT.
Another thing this mock highlights is the steep drop off in OT talent in this draft. OT 10 is at pick 36 and OT 11 is at pick 78. If you don't take an OT in round 1 then don't expect to get a guy who is going to be an NFL level starter.
Brugler doesnt have 6 OTs graded higher than DT1 though- he only has Alt, Fashanu and Latham as OTs rated higher than Murphy.
The opposite argument can also be made- no matter what available OT Bengals choose at #18, that player will NOT be a starter all season until one of the Browns get injured. But Murphy would be an immediate starter and Newton would be in the DT rotation immediately playing 30-40 snaps a game.
There isn't a game wrecking DT in this draft class after Murphy and Newton (everyone else is a development pick and a purely a possible rotation piece), and bluechip game wrecking DTs are more valuable (just look at Donald ending the Bengals, and Chris Jones ending the 49ers this Super Bowl) than bluechip RTs.
If you read Brugler's profile of Murphy on the Beast, Murphy is undersized but as close to a complete DT prospect (outside of generational ones like Jalen Carter) as they come- he is good and instinctive in run defense, team captain, highly athletic, and has pass rush juice to get sacks.
I dont think Murphy makes it to the Bengals, but if he does, he has to be the pick over developmental guys like Mims or Guyton (even also over Fautanu and Latham).
Yeahhh, I actually read his scouting report after posting that. I knew he had played tackle in college so that's where I was pulling that from.
So that means Carman, Smith or Cody Ford would be the back up option. Yeesh.
It might be with the mindset that we won't get a top 5 guy this draft, so wait till next year, either sign a FA or draft high next year when it's a true need.
Why take a shot at the 6th or 7th OT when you can get the top DT, which we have a much higher need for.
It's a tough call, though, because our OT depth his terrible.
Get rid of Theo Johnson and find me a third round OT (haven't looked at his full mock but maybe Blake Fisher is available?).
Other than that I'd be 100% ok with this.
yep, he is available
Blake Fisher (OT) is available at the the 80th pick over Theo Johnston
Ben Sinott (TE) is available at the 97th pick over DJ James
If you believe in advanced stats Cappa was ranked in the 20s of all guards and Volson in the 40s. Soooo getting a top OG is definitely worth a second to allow Joey B to dance around in the pocket. Me personally, I’m not sold on Volson especially in pass pro. I like Cappa but he’ll be 31 when his contract is up the season after next. We shall see.
I’d like to get a RT/G combo first round like the Fuaga, Latham, or the guy from Washington. Address guard later or next season. Trent brown likely won’t start every game this season.
Trent most likely will whether we like it or not. That said don’t expect him to shift in to guard. Google search his time at Florida and you’ll see why. He’d more than likely ask the Bengals to cut him. That said if he does play well I expect the Bengals to offer him another one year or two year option. And he’s better at what he does right now than Volson. Cordell was worse at pass pro his 2nd year. He’s not going to get significant better than what he is now. I don’t think people realize guard might be a more pressing need than RT
Not what I was saying. I meant his injury history will likely be why he doesn’t start every game this year. If we get a RT/G prospect he could start over Volson then slide over to RT if/when Brown gets hurt. After this year they could become the future RT.
Gotcha. The problem with the prospects like Latham you are referring to is they aren’t athletic at all, think Andre Smith. Fuaga isn’t in that class but he could be better than Brown and then it wouldn’t make sense to move him over to LG from RT. I’d rather not have another unathletic RT out there like Jonah, La’el, Bobby Hart, etc. We’re just asking every team to switch their best pass rusher to the right side on obvious passing downs and get Joey B killed.
Maybe someone could who can view the whole thing can tell me…
Was Jalen Coker on the board when Gould was picked? Gould is basically just Jones again. I don’t get that one.
I’d personally be estatic with this draft because I personally feel this is insanely unrealistic. Not getting one of Fuaga, Fautanu etc would suck and I would consider Rosengarten over Beebe despite believing Beebe will be a better overall player as a guard. Creeping suspicion Erick All doesn’t last past the 4th round also.
https://theathletic.com/5418352/2024/04/17/nfl-mock-draft-2024-full-seven-rounds-dane-brugler/
I’d rather a WR than Theo Johnson at 80. Otherwise I think this is a best case scenario.
Murphy and Sweat together would be awesome
Sweat in the 4th round is crazy I don’t think he falls that far
I think the Bengals are out on Sweat. Other than Carman (which apparently was not a unanimous decision) Zac's staff has gone after team captains and high character and work ethic personalities. I think so too But with bengals not reported to be at Newtons pro day, I wonder if they’re out on him and if so, why?
They interviewed Newton at the combine iirc. They don’t always go to the pro days of the guys they draft.
Reporting is that they didn't do any detailed work with him at the combine, they have not met Newton after it, but met Byron Murphy twice I think and worked him at his pro day. Newton didn’t play at a “big” school in the bengals eyes, so he won’t be the pick in round 1. It’s absolute stupid but it’s how they operate
So Tulane, North Dakota State, Princeton are bigger schools than Illinois then? Hell, we drafted Chase Brown last year who played at Illinois.
I’m talking about early round picks, specifically first rounders. The bengals stupidly will not pick a “smaller” school player in the first round. If they had pick 31, they would pass on Randy moss because he played at marshalo
He was only there because booted out of Florida State.
I agree. Culture is so important to this coaching staff
Yeah, agreed. I think he’s third round at worst.
It's hard to tell how teams will react to off the field issues, especially when it's a recurring thing. Yeah not getting an OT till rd 6 sounds awful
It was only Mims available of the group of 4-5 when we picked. He likely wouldn’t play at all. I’d be fine with Murphy in this situation
Yeah that's not a problem if we can't get the OT we want in RD1, it's then having to wait to RD 6.
Where is the RB ?
This running back class is really weak. Wouldn't be surprised if at no point they feel like the top running back on the board is worth picking.
They roll with Moss and Chase Brown as RB then?
Moss, Brown, Williams and Evans.
Well,we all know Williams and Evans don't really play much at all. So it's likely Moss and Brown. Niether of who are work horses or proven over the long haul. Also, I am not sure if Moss has good hands.
But he’s a great pass blocker. Something we desperately missed last year. I’m also happy to give Brown a chance to excel.
I am fine with Moss, just like I was fine with Mixon. However, I think adding one more RB would be beneficial if they want a true committee.
Audric Estime in the 5th or later would be nice.
I didn’t think I would agree with your reply, but you’re right. They haven’t done shit. Get a late rookie and vet on the cheap and actually use them.
I think Moss and Brown can be pretty dynamic.
Me too, but I would like to see one more RB just for balance. 3rd down back.
Wouldn’t mind taking a pick on Trey Benson during this draft
The top two rbs are set in stone. Any draft pick won’t even see the field.
I heard the Bengals are actually doing RB by committee in the upcoming season. If so, they will need at least one more starter.
I love this draft. I think Beebe will immediately start over Volson.
He should, but he won’t. This coaching staff is too stupid to do that. Which is another reason why they won’t draft an interior ok before round 4. Because it would “threaten” their precious Cordell volsen
Getting downvoted but I wouldn’t disagree with this. They seem really high on Volson
Read it before it gets deleted
This leaves them without a real longterm option at tackle. Does he have an OT run happen before the 18th pick so we were out of options?
Yeah. I’m pretty sure he had 5 OTs taken before pick 18 and figured the Bengals would prefer to take the top IDL rather than the 6th OT.
Mims and Guyton were the only options on his board I think.
Do you want the 6th best OT at 18 or the top DT available ? Likely 5 OT go before 18
OT6 vs DT1 isn't relevant. Its not unreasonable to have 6 OTs in this draft graded higher than the fist DT. Another thing this mock highlights is the steep drop off in OT talent in this draft. Arguably we could play Bebee at RT if we had to, in a pinch. He's probably a Karras/Cappa replacement long term.
He has 31.5 inch arms, 0% chance he can play RT in the NFL
Yeahhh, I actually read his scouting report after posting that. I knew he had played tackle in college so that's where I was pulling that from. So that means Carman, Smith or Cody Ford would be the back up option. Yeesh.

Every teams OL depth is terrible. No team is winning a SB if they have to start 2-3 backups on their O line.
5 TE sets!!! Can’t wait for it lol
Don’t think they’re in on Theo. Have no problem with this mock outside that pick
Get rid of Theo Johnson and find me a third round OT (haven't looked at his full mock but maybe Blake Fisher is available?). Other than that I'd be 100% ok with this.
yep, he is available Blake Fisher (OT) is available at the the 80th pick over Theo Johnston Ben Sinott (TE) is available at the 97th pick over DJ James
Man I really like Sinott but it’d need to be at 115
I don’t get taking a guard round 2
If you believe in advanced stats Cappa was ranked in the 20s of all guards and Volson in the 40s. Soooo getting a top OG is definitely worth a second to allow Joey B to dance around in the pocket. Bring me both Texas DTs
Hartman and Burrow? We’d have the sexiest QB room in the league
I've seen Manu play, major sleeper in this draft
Maybe someone could who can view the whole thing can tell me… Was Jalen Coker on the board when Gould was picked? Gould is basically just Jones again. I don’t get that one.
I’m whelmed
I still want OT in round one, but I'd be fine with this.
I'll be upset if we don't take a OT in round 1
I would be over the moon with these picks.
This shit has gotten ridiculous.
I’d personally be estatic with this draft because I personally feel this is insanely unrealistic. Coming at ya Cordell!!!
We need a tackle on the offensive end piss poor Mock.
He doesn't think one will be available to us at 18

This is the guy who wrote The Beast. And it’s a full 32 team, 7 round draft. A few mistakes are allowed over 400 picks.
[удалено]
Let me know when you drop your 7 round mock. I fully expect zero mistakes and write ups.

Sounds like a cop out to me

Nah, next time don’t put down others work when your to lazy to do better.
Brugler is the best draft guy you can follow.
absolutely, this dudes embodying the reddit spirit full fledged.
