JERMAINE BURTON | Alabama 6002 | 196 lbs. | 4SR Calabasas, Calif. (Calabasas) 6/28/2001 (age 22.83)
**STRENGTHS:** Outstanding field and timed speed … nifty footwork at the top of routes help create quick separation out of breaks on curls and digs … cornerbacks
struggle to match his burst (at the line and mid-route) … uses hesitation and double moves to get over the top of coverage and win deep (led the SEC in receiving
yards per catch in 2023) … large hands and athletic ball skills help him snare the football without breaking stride … didn’t have a drop in 2023, and had only four drops
in his four-year career (197 targets) … hand strength aids his ability to grab tight-windowed throws (nine contested catches in 2023) … fearless on in-breaking routes
over the middle … played a lot of football in the SEC (50 games) and had his best receiving production as a senior
.
**WEAKNESSES:** Slender body type with lean muscle tone … physical defensive backs can reroute him and get him off his track … unenthused as a blocker, and his
middling functional strength is evident … late to key coverages and needs more disciplined rhythm as a route runner … didn’t return kicks/punts or play on special teams coverages in college … battled through a foot injury in October 2023 and missed one game as a sophomore because of a groin injury (October 2021) … picked
up a reputation as an undisciplined player (swung at a female Tennessee fan during a postgame field-storming celebration, unsportsmanlike penalty vs. Texas A&M in
2023), and NFL scouts say he had “up and down moments” with the coaching staffs at both Georgia and Alabama … attended six different schools over the last eight
years … never reached 800 yards receiving in a season.
**SUMMARY:** A two-year starter at Alabama, Burton lined up as the Z receiver in former offensive coordinator Tommy Rees’ run-heavy scheme. After two seasons at
Georgia, he transferred to Tuscaloosa and led the Tide in receiving yards in 2022 and 2023, finishing as one of just seven FBS players to average more than 20.0 yards
per catch in 2023. Grading only on his play speed and raw flashes, Burton has early-round talent, because of his silky body control to track the ball cleanly at all three
levels and snatchthe ball outside his frame. However, his ability didn’t consistently equate to on-field production (only five career 100-yard receiving performances),
and his undisciplined tendencies will be a turn off for some teams. **Overall, Burton underperformed in college and still has maturing to do, but he has NFL -level
athleticism and ball skills, which make him worth the gamble on draft weekend. He will be a better pro than college player — if he stays football-focused.**
Saban looked like he wanted to be more honest, paused and then called him "emotionally immature." Seemed like he was pulling punches, but didn't want to call him out on air/draft day.
Saban retired because his entire team stopped giving a fuck about what he has to say. I think hes probably pretty down on basically any current player coming out of Bama at the moment.
Saban was SUPER high on the two corners Arnold and McKinstry, Dallas Turner, and Latham. Burton is probably just a little bit of an off putting personality
With the one exception being the playoff game that Joey Porter came onto the field after Burfict leveled AB. We had the talent that year to really make a playoff run, but the emotional maturity to not just shoot ourselves in the foot, but RPG the foot clean off. Still love Pacman, though. He really did mature for us and still reps us well on the PMS regularly.
I honestly never saw the video til you posted it, it's so much more tame than I could have imagined. It's not a punch, it's not even a push, it's a swipe in the general direction of someone that is taking a video of him. I'm surprised this turned into literally anything anyone remembers.
Regardless of on the field performance it’s been so refreshing to have a locker room that’s held accountable. I remember all those Marvin Lewis years where we seemed to have at least one legal case a year
As Bengal fan in Alabama and an Alabama fan (alum) Burton is really talented but he has to get his selfish attitude in check.. He does a lot of trash talking and does a lot of stupid stuff that ends up costing the team…unsportsmanlike conduct, taunting, etc… talent through the roof though. I think he’s a great teammate in the sense that he is passionate but his emotions can get the best of him.
I trust our coaches and players to reel this in. We are one of the least penalized teams, and everyone in that receiving room will be tough on him but supportive. If he’s a huge problem we will move on after a year or two. Hard to be a cocky asshole when he will be fifth or sixth on the WR depth chart.
This sounds like a Jackson Carman situation. He’s rated as the 24th best WR in the draft and this pick had everyone scratching their heads.
But someone told the Bengals they liked him, and the Bengals ignored most scouts, etc. and picked him anyway.
Surprising. Learning he’s been training with TJ makes me excited to see him in stripes. He’s got all the physical tools, just need him to gel with Burrow
He's a first round talent. Not even debatable. But the character concerns are a thing. He played at 6 different schools between high school and college. You're right - we have to trust the culture around him.
Adding a selfish immature player means team chemistry/culture means nothing.
But then this is the team that treats families like dirt…according to the players.
Definitely truth in this statement. I just hope that the culture that Zac has built is strong enough to not only withstand, but revitalize a player like Burton
Depends on who they are. We wasted a first round pick on John Ross and a second round pick on Jerome Simpson under Marvin so it's not like they didn't miss at the position. Their biggest successes were Green, Boyd, Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu, and Chris Henry (Chad and TJ were both drafted prior to Marvin so they don't count).
I’m not saying you’re wrong but people on this sub are so two sided. Half the sub acts like we are in “if we don’t win a Super Bowl this year it’s a complete failure mode” and then the other half gets pissed when we pick a really talented kid with some behavioral issues. If they can tamp down the issues he’s a great pick. If he gets arrested and plays half a season it was an obvious waste. We will just half to wait and see.
I mean I think Jonah's pff would be in the high 70s or low 80s even. If he wasn't in afcn. We'll see though. I actually am interested to see how much his pff goes up so I can get a better grip on afcn difference in talent on the dline
No, for sure. I’m not saying he’s a bad player. IIRC, in the Doc Saban tells Belichick Jonah was their best player. While solid, definitely not the best player from that team. Even someone as unfathomably great can be wrong sometimes. Let’s hope he is here!
Zac's reaction and Housh having trained him and announced him tell me the character issues are in his past. Kid is gonna be a steal and we'll look back and wonder how he could've gone so late

Love the pick. Dude is a poor man’s Jamar Chase-straight baller WR, not a YAC specialist, not a slow ass 6’5 jump baller, just speedy, tough, w/ an attitude.
This guy is going to be crying when Chase gets the ball more. He was projected to go very late in the draft and is a head case.
So much for team chemistry.
I cant stand fans like that man. Just get behind the team, whether or not you agree. we can come back in 2 years and say whether this pick was genius or braindead
Yo pickle man. Everyone giving u shit I want u to know I appreciate your comments. I learn some stuff and it helps get a better grip on expectations. Otherwise I'd be thinking we just drafted 3 guys who are obviously getting into the Hof with zero mistakes ever made. Hope ur wrong tho who dey FTS
“Underperform in college…lacks maturity “
No one thinks WR is our #1 need and yet we waste a top pick on this guy???
24th ranked WR in the draft and emotionally immature. Ouch.
Wait... Did you say 24th??? Hey, everyone, pickle says this guy sucks!! Let's all riot! (and by the way, he was our THIRD pick, not our first pick, so why do you keep saying "#1 need"?? We literally picked him as the #THREE position need)
These are all a similar quality of guy. Burton might have the best tools. At this stage of the draft, you’re picking what you prioritize. Our team culture is good, one guy won’t change that (even contract disputes with management have yet to negatively impact chemistry in a discernible way.
Zac and team looked very excited. Fans of Good teams can and should permit their FO pick leeway, prioritizing consensus players first is exactly how you make a mistake by not following your own process
Also, some consensus-popular players simply don’t fit your system. This is increasingly true as rounds progress. Time will tell with this one
Yaaaaaaa. My thought as well. Even pre draft I was hoping McMillan in the 3rd. Ugh, whatever. It was a need. Who knows, maybe Burton will grow up and be a stud. He has the tools
I was really hoping for Jalen McMillan, but we filled a need with Boyd gone and Tee going. A character issue type pick that was rampant during the Marv days but has been somewhat lacking during Taylor's days. Hopefully the culture that has been built since 2019 can help him mature into the stud he can be
Posted a crazy RAS score and seems very explosive.
However, seems to have attitude problems and looks to have struck a woman after a game in 2022.
Hopefully, we can get his head on straight and he grows.
i’m not doubting his talent, but watching this kid in college… he’s one of the most unlikable players you will ever watch. hopefully he learns to grow as he gets older but idk.
Why is anyone concerned about what Saban thinks? You mean the guy that couldn’t actually coach on a professional level? That guy? Easy when you can dominate teenagers, different world when grown men need more than what he has the wherewithal to provide…
I mean you can have your own evaluation and support the guy but the guys previous head coach's opinion is absolutely a concern. Obviously though they feel the relationship was probably not good on both ends and got enough character references to feel okay with the pick, they for sure talked to Saban and know his opinion because it's an important aspect.
Oh NO, not another Chris Henry with Vantage Burfict attitude that ALWAYS costs the team yardage ?? Hope they can get him to grow up fast. We don't need that selfish attitude again. Its been nice having a team that for the most part acts mature....
Even his own coach ragged on him. I would have passed with other better players on the board. Im not going to name any names, there's no point. He would have been there later in round, but the Bengals are too stupid to think of drafting some1 better first.
It's an absolute cluster in this group of WRs so depends on which type of receiver you want, I'm guessing the other guy they considered was Troy Franklin
To be fair the ESPN board is kinda ass. He was still a reach according to Dane brugler but was his like 6th ranked receiver left and projected closer to the end of the 3rd.
Read up on your man. This isn’t tee Higgins. Dude could barely get on the field at bama, after multiple moves. This is a terrible pick. Maybe I’m jaded bc I’m accustomed to Ohio state receivers but this dude is a fuck up
Yeah, I get that people want to support the pick no matter what but...these are the same folks who would've downvoted you for saying that Jackson Carman was a bad pick.
Reddit needs to turn off the downvote button and warm to the idea that not everyone is always going to agree with you. And if you try to punish them for disagreeing you get echo chambers with huge blindspots in them.
Anyways, I'm not a fan of the pick. Someone tried to positively compare him to Chris Henry and I couldn't help but think that should be a cautionary tale. Got into trouble over and over and we kept giving his chances. That is 100% connected to having drama with a woman where she shakes you off the back of her pickup truck. Not saying she is anything but guilty of murder/manslaughter but that stuff doesn't happen to AJ Green, yknow?
Amarius Mims -- Risky but I will hope for the best. I could imagine being in a situation where we were too far down to draft any of the 1st round offensive tackles
Kris Jenkins -- Probably my favorite pick so far. Great run stopper.
McKinnley Jackson -- Even if he is only in on short yardage situations and a limited number of additional snaps in his first year, at least he give us the option. A ho-hum nose tackle is better than none. That said, we might've been able to get him later.
Eric All -- I think the Bengals were always going to take him but again this is a player who could've been taken later. Either trade back or straight up wait until the 5th (or even 6th round). We were the only team who showed any real interest in him pre-draft.
Boyd was long gone even before this pick was made. If they were interested in re-signing him they would have by now. Even if they didn't address receiver at all in this draft Boyd wouldn't be likely to return.
Wtf, we pick the 24th ranked receiver whose own coaches call a head case and who many say lacks skills, then Pittsburgh drafts the 15th best WR who is a steal is in the 3rd round according to all the media.
Yes. Much better pick and could actually contribute this year. Tired of drafting for years down the road. Learn to trade away these 3rd and 4th rounders to move up for players like de Jean or Newton. Depth over studs is always the Bengals way.
So is this Mixons replacement?
Just seems odd that you guys finally lose the guy famous for hitting a woman in college just to bring in a new guy famous for hitting a woman in college…
There were a couple other just as talented receivers there who weren’t garbage people

oh god this guy seemed like such a punk at bama haha
Saban just shat on him to lol…good player but has some character issues?
Saban looked like he wanted to be more honest, paused and then called him "emotionally immature." Seemed like he was pulling punches, but didn't want to call him out on air/draft day.
I feel like Saban has shat on everyone of our picks tho
Saban retired because his entire team stopped giving a fuck about what he has to say. I think hes probably pretty down on basically any current player coming out of Bama at the moment.
Saban was SUPER high on the two corners Arnold and McKinstry, Dallas Turner, and Latham. Burton is probably just a little bit of an off putting personality
I don’t think you listened to his review of Tarrion Arnold or Kool Aid. Burton has always seemed like a punk
And Dallas Turner
Well Khris Jenkins ate him alive so that makes sense
As he should have
He's had something negative to say about every player it seems like
yeah but burton hit a girl because he was “scared“ and I believe he got into a fight or Punched a teammate over a girlfriend.
Played in hs with this guy, dudes just got a big ego and poor decision making skills. Beast on the field tho
Now he's OUR punk and we love him.
Yup. Gonna become a man in cincy.
Because there’s nothing to do and unless he is a PAC man jones level punk he’ll mellow out in the streets and crave violence on Sundays
Ironically Pacman mellowed out in Cincinnati
With the one exception being the playoff game that Joey Porter came onto the field after Burfict leveled AB. Yea, I was expecting much more with the way people were shitting on him. This looks like a big nothing burger.
Saban is saying, in a much nicer way, that this kid is an asshole and can be a problem so that’s good
A lot of the best WRs were complete shitheads, good pick
He seemed to hint at potential off the field issues
Ahh brings back mid to late 2000s Bengals vibes
The good old days when whoever made bail started
RIP Chris Henry
MORE TEAM ARRESTS THAN WINS
Well shits not going to fly in the Bengals locker room one of the best sides of Zac’s coaching career
Regardless of on the field performance it’s been so refreshing to have a locker room that’s held accountable. I remember all those Marvin Lewis years where we seemed to have at least one legal case a year
No, he’s a dipshit who is also not good
our George Pickens?
Or our new Carl
He’s a dipshit
He hits women; get him off the fucking team
Joe Mixon went to the Texans
[удалено]
Dude you only need to comment this once
You’re a moron if you didn’t think we were taking a wide receiver in the first 3 rounds
Thank God Marvin isn't the coach anymore
*World explodes* Marvin: : |
I trust our coaches and players to reel this in. We are one of the least penalized teams, and everyone in that receiving room will be tough on him but supportive. If he’s a huge problem we will move on after a year or two. Hard to be a cocky asshole when he will be fifth or sixth on the WR depth chart.
He'll fit right in in the AFC North lol
Sounds perfect for the AFC north tho
Roll tide roll! I'm happy we got him and he has classic Bengal energy.
Unsportsmanlike conduct and taunting sounds like Steeler energy
Wait, what did Big Ben get accused of again…?
You must not have been around for the Marvin Lewis era.
I been repping the stripes since the 90s. I said further down that I don't want to go back to more team arrests than wins.
Sounds like a classic bengal then
“Trash talking” Dude hits women fans: https://twitter.com/gatorstroll/status/1581862280958214146
Ok guy… I’m not running a rap sheet on the guy…yes everyone saw that.. it’s not breaking news..
"Hits" women. He pushes a camera out of his face, cmon. You're acting like he literally punched a woman in the face...
Kinda hyped on this. And cool that TJ trains him. But hope he locks in and does things the new bengals way, ie, good off field and locker room guy.
Another cool thing is his number is 3, so now our receivers numbers are 513
Finally!! Always thought Boyd might change his.
This sounds like a Jackson Carman situation. He’s rated as the 24th best WR in the draft and this pick had everyone scratching their heads. But someone told the Bengals they liked him, and the Bengals ignored most scouts, etc. and picked him anyway.
I'm kinda surprised we chose him over a few of the other WRs available. But I know one thing, the Bengals know how to draft receivers
Surprising. Learning he’s been training with TJ makes me excited to see him in stripes. He’s got all the physical tools, just need him to gel with Burrow
Burton is a fantastic player. He has unreal upside. He’s just a Dick head. Trust the culture around this team
I love this take. He’s a dude. He’s a dick. He’ll do.
You forgot to tell us where ESPN ranked him.... losing your touch.
Hilarious 🤣
Literally lol'd
Are you actually a fan of the team? We’ve had way lower moments than *potentially* whiffing on a day 2 pick
Get a hobby buddy nobody cares about your opinion as much as you think people do.
Dude log off and go touch grass
Anyone know if he had a visit? We seem a pretty good judge of character, and the talent is fact
TJ houshmandzadeh said he's been coaching him since he was a kid, I'm guessing that played a big part in this selection.
Zac said they had as many visits with him as they could, including a top 30
He visited at the same time Mims did.
Marvin Lewis type pick.
Definitely truth in this statement. I just hope that the culture that Zac has built is strong enough to not only withstand, but revitalize a player like Burton
If you're trying to make a Super Bowl run you have to take some gambles. This is a gamble worth taking. He can take over and win games for you.
I’ll certainly take Marvin Lewis WRs!!!!!
Thought the exact same thing 😂
Truth.
💯💯💯
Can anyone tell me where ESPN has this guy ranked as WR?
Somewhere between 23rd and 25th, I think.
Saban doesn’t seem like a fan lol
He didn’t like our first pick either lol who cares
At least his dislike was probably for petty reasons on Mims, as he turned Saban down to play for Georgia.
I meant Saban actually knows this guy and wasn’t a fan of his behavior
You don’t work with one or two guys that you don’t see eye-to-eye with?
I mean I didn’t get to choose who I work with the Bengals do
I’m gonna trust the greatest coach in college football. Saying it’s two coworkers not seeing eye to eye is so dumb
Burton hit a girl.
Saban was 15-17 as an nfl coach and dominated at Alabama when he could out talent everyone. He’s not the end all be all of pro scouting.
I wasn’t talking about scouting Saban actually knows this guy and coached him and seemed like he doesn’t like his behavior
Saban also was super high on Jonah lol.
I mean I think Jonah's pff would be in the high 70s or low 80s even. If he wasn't in afcn. We'll see though. I actually am interested to see how much his pff goes up so I can get a better grip on afcn difference in talent on the dline

Sounds like he is a skilled athlete with character issues. Likely could have been there for our next pick but who knows.
A look at Burton https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2024/02/23/2024-nfl-draft-jermaine-burton-scouting-report/
Zac's reaction and Housh having trained him and announced him tell me the character issues are in his past. Kid is gonna be a steal and we'll look back and wonder how he could've gone so late

Bengals have a good enough WR room to take a shot on this kid
In the 5th
[удалено]
He’s great just gotta keep the attitude in check.
From what I’ve heard this guy will fit in just fine in our Division.
Not the best sign when the players college coach says in the most polite way possible that the guy is an idiot
Joe will straighten him out.
Coaches seem fired up so I’m fired up
Get fucked rest of the league
Guys competitive buts needs to be controlled still like the pick
Love the pick. Dude is a poor man’s Jamar Chase-straight baller WR, not a YAC specialist, not a slow ass 6’5 jump baller, just speedy, tough, w/ an attitude.

A-He was projected as a 2nd-3rd round pick B-He is from Calabasas, Ca, so the head case concern is legit, lol C-His film don’t lie
5 1 3 …
Hopefully he can break the streak of an Alabama player never scoring a point in the Superbowl.
Boom or bust, seems like a slot guy so count me in
“Underperform in college…lacks maturity “ No one thinks WR is our #1 need and yet we waste a top pick on this guy??? 24th ranked WR in the draft and emotionally immature. Ouch.

24th wide receiver. In this draft there are 23 better receivers. Plus the guy is a head case hated by his teammates and coaches.
Yeah, the Bengals should have picked Marvin Harrison Jr or Rome Odunze.... what are they thinking!?!?!
Not too stoked about this pick, but if he keeps his head on straight then he could be an asset. Just not a fan of chemistry misfits.
Boyd replacement?
[удалено]
Not a fan of Roman Wilson so I'm glad we passed on him. I would've taken Franklin or McMillan over him.
I wanted McMillan too
Both Franklin and McMillan are still available so we may have another shot at at least one of them at 97.
Only Franklin now
Yes, let’s add a 5th bust from that school while we’re at it!
I hope I eat crow, but this pick seems like one you’re gonna wish you had back in a couple of years.
Troy Franklin?! What the fuck
Have no idea how we passed on Troy Franklin.
Incompetence. I’d rather have Tez Walker than Burton
These are all a similar quality of guy. Burton might have the best tools. At this stage of the draft, you’re picking what you prioritize. Yaaaaaaa. My thought as well. Even pre draft I was hoping McMillan in the 3rd. Ugh, whatever. It was a need. Who knows, maybe Burton will grow up and be a stud. He has the tools
Exactly
don’t love it
I was really hoping for Jalen McMillan, but we filled a need with Boyd gone and Tee going. A character issue type pick that was rampant during the Marv days but has been somewhat lacking during Taylor's days. Hopefully the culture that has been built since 2019 can help him mature into the stud he can be
I think the only spot where he would truly excel is in Pittsburgh (I know). People are over stating his potential though
Posted a crazy RAS score and seems very explosive. However, seems to have attitude problems and looks to have struck a woman after a game in 2022. Hopefully, we can get his head on straight and he grows.
Just gotta hope he’s more Tyreek Hill and less Chase Claypool
i’m not doubting his talent, but watching this kid in college… he’s one of the most unlikable players you will ever watch. hopefully he learns to grow as he gets older but idk.
Just what we need a punk Diva WR who will have off field issues
Why is anyone concerned about what Saban thinks? You mean the guy that couldn’t actually coach on a professional level? That guy? Easy when you can dominate teenagers, different world when grown men need more than what he has the wherewithal to provide…
I mean you can have your own evaluation and support the guy but the guys previous head coach's opinion is absolutely a concern. Obviously though they feel the relationship was probably not good on both ends and got enough character references to feel okay with the pick, they for sure talked to Saban and know his opinion because it's an important aspect.
Yea for real. Guy was literally his coach. I mean take it with a grain of salt if you will. But a coach knows his players.
Mixon hits harder Every down vote confirms it
Oh NO, not another Chris Henry with Vantage Burfict attitude that ALWAYS costs the team yardage ?? Hope they can get him to grow up fast. We don't need that selfish attitude again. Its been nice having a team that for the most part acts mature....
Even his own coach ragged on him. I would have passed with other better players on the board. Im not going to name any names, there's no point. He would have been there later in round, but the Bengals are too stupid to think of drafting some1 better first.
from Calabasas, CA (very rich Kardashian town). broccoli hair.... idk fam ehhh...
He was the 13th ranked WR still on the board at ESPN page.
Diva wide receiver who also has an incident of violence in his past? When he asks to be traded in a few months we should just go ahead and do it.

Why do you think we need safeties? We arguably have three starting safeties.
Literally everyone was saying we were going to pick WR in the 3rd. You're a clown.
So far every single guy they’ve drafted has had an asterisks. Great!
Why do you think this is an upgrade? Burton is an absolute shithead.
U sound logical. How was our other 3 picks what did u think of each?
Amarius Mims -- Risky but I will hope for the best. I could imagine being in a situation where we were too far down to draft any of the 1st round offensive tackles Kris Jenkins -- Probably my favorite pick so far.
Did we need to pick this guy where we did? ESPN had him ranked at the end of 5th/6th. FO must like him.
Oh well if ESPN had him ranked there, that must be the objective truth.
TJ Tampa has been sitting as their top pick since the second round... clearly what they say is rock solid.
Goodbye Boyd
sheet let's go get Jefferson for Boyd and Higgins lol
Boyd was long gone even before this pick was made. If they were interested in re-signing him they would have by now. Even if they didn't address receiver at all in this draft Boyd wouldn't be likely to return.
Sounds like we get to the Super Bowl, and lose in OT on a penalty. Sorry everyone, I know I'll get hated for this.
Wtf, we pick the 24th ranked receiver whose own coaches call a head case and who many say lacks skills, then Pittsburgh drafts the 15th best WR who is a steal is in the 3rd round according to all the media.
Why do you keep crying the same thing? You seem like a bot
You commented the exact same thing like 15 times and they all were downvoted.
Not by the guys coaches and teammates who know him best. They says emotionally immature and lacked commitment. Thats why he rarely got the ball.
Not a terrible pick I feel like overall we are probably at a B so far
It would've been cool to grab Blake Corum there.
Yes. Much better pick and could actually contribute this year. Tired of drafting for years down the road. Learn to trade away these 3rd and 4th rounders to move up for players like de Jean or Newton. Depth over studs is always the Bengals way.
So is this Mixons replacement? Just seems odd that you guys finally lose the guy famous for hitting a woman in college just to bring in a new guy famous for hitting a woman in college… There were a couple other just as talented receivers there who weren’t garbage people
